The project was conceived by Kamloops-based artist and visual art professor Donald Lawrence and was funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). The group of artists, scholars and art students came together for summer solstice, 2015, in Dawson City, Yukon where they used the exceptionally long days and stunning landscape to produce a variety of art works. 2

Welcome

to Arts Days in Lethbridge!

On behalf of the Allied Arts Council (AAC) of Lethbridge, welcome to the largest annual celebration of the ARTS in our city. In its sixth year, Arts Days has become an explosion of artistic creativity, a showcase of the talent and professionalism in our arts community and a moment of city-wide community engagement in all artistic disciplines. This year’s programming is diverse, eclectic and a ton of fun with lots of opportunities to participate. Love to read or have always secretly wanted to write a book? Attend The Word On The Street Lethbridge Book & Magazine Festival and celebrate reading, writing and literacy with the Lethbridge Public Library. Interested in Canadiana comedy and theatre? Be sure to purchase tickets for Cowboy: A Cowboy Story with New West Theatre. Help the Southern Alberta Art Gallery celebrate 40 years by kicking off ArtWalk with a cupcake! (Who doesn’t love cupcakes?) Learn about the history of Lethbridge’s theatres by participating in a walking tour of our downtown core. Foster a little creativity of your own by participating in the AAC’s daily Creativity Prompts. Bring the whole family to Family Affair on the Square at Casa to make art, listen to live music and watch dance performances. There really is no shortage of things to do! While Arts Days happens just one week a year, the Lethbridge arts community works throughout the year hosting theatre performances, art openings, dance shows, concerts, readings, and film nights. In 2015, 320 arts events were posted to the artslethbridge.org on-line calendar. Our arts community is vibrant and welcoming. We hope that Arts Days encourages you to engage with the arts all year long.

Jenn Schmidt-Rempel

ARTS DAYS at SAAG Our fall season kicks into high gear with Lethbridge Arts Days, which coincides with our provincial and national Culture Days at the end of September, bringing a flurry of activity to our city as the arts take center stage. With new exhibitions, workshops, public programming and other exciting events, we will be enthusiastically celebrating our 40th anniversary! Join us at the gallery, won’t you? ARTS DAYS AT SAAG PRESENTED BY NORTH & COMPANY LLP For the second year in a row, we are pleased to be partnering with North & Company LLP to offer a variety of great programs and activities for Arts Days. North & Co. has a strong history of community involvement and we are proud to be joining forces with their staff.

Friday, September 30 10am to 5pm Kick off your Art Walk at SAAG! We will be celebrating our 40th anniversary with cupcakes all day long. Local cartoonist Eric Dyck will be signing his new comic book, The Saga of SAAG: a ‘wee’ history of the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, which celebrates SAAG’s 40 years of contemporary art and community programming in Lethbridge.

Saturday, October 1 9 to 11am What better way to start your Art Walk Saturday than with a complimentary pancake breakfast! Presented by North & Co., hot coffee and delicious pancakes will fuel you for all of the excitement of Arts Days. Stick around for the remainder of the day for free admission to our exhibitions and family fun with The Guide. 6:30pm Immerse yourself in Lisa Lipton’s THE IMPOSSIBLE BLUE ROSE. The culmination of a three year project exploring nostalgia, pop culture and self discovery. The performance encompasses a seemingly absurd collection of events including a basketball grudge match, an orchestra, marathon runners, food vendors and more. Attend a host of performances at either the basketball game at Fritz Sick Memorial Gym (420 11 St S) or the theatre at the Genevieve E. Yates Memorial Centre (1002 4 Ave S) for this immersive performance that blurs the boundaries between art and life. 8 to 10pm Join us for the opening of Janet Cardiff & George Bures Miller’s OPERA FOR A SMALL ROOM and Lisa Lipton’s THE IMPOSSIBLE BLUE ROSE. We’ll also launch our latest feature artist in The Shop at SAAG: Eric Dyck.
