This edition’s cover features the sculpture TOGETHER created by Julia Jamrozik and Cor yn Kempster in 2019. TOGETHER fosters community by providing seating elements that may be occupied by passers-by, sparking small conversations and social interactions at this gateway to the Lethbridge downtown. Jamrozik and Kempster are Toronto-based designers, artists and educators who have collaborated since 2003. They create spaces and objects that interr upt ever yday situations in critically engaging and playful ways. Together, they have exhibited in galleries, produced temporar y outdoor installations, and realized permanent public artworks in Canada, USA, Germany, France, Italy, and South Korea. • about 87% agree that arts and culture activities make their community a better place to live
When the arts thrive, Alberta is a better place to live, invest, and do business.” Government of Alberta website.
• about 83% of Albertans feel that arts activities make an important contribution to their quality of life
September in Lethbridge sees an explosion of arts and culture each year as the weather cools, students return to the city, and artists share the work they have been creating all year. Be sure to visit galleries, experience shows and explore the many artistic and cultural activities that abound in September.

By Katie Bruce, Public Art Coordinator
In the past few years, a concerted effort has been made to invite Indigenous voices to the realm of public art in Lethbridge. Looking around downtown, one will notice vinyl wraps on utility boxes around Galt Gardens adding cultural symbols and traditional Blackfoot language into the public sphere. Oki signs wrapped with artwork by local Indigenous artists will begin popping up at prominent locations later this fall – a reminder that all are welcome on traditional Blackfoot and Siksikaitsitapi land. These projects, along with the larger scale projects have been brought from conception into reality by individuals and groups like Perry Stein of Reconciliation Lethbridge, the Public Art Committee, and the Culture and Recreation department with the City of Lethbridge, working with Blackfoot artists who have created the artworks. By being intentional about inclusion, these various entities are asking that both Indigenous and non-Indigenous individuals consider how we make community and who is present for those conversations. While this is certainly only part of a larger discussion taking place in Lethbridge, public art pieces – which by nature are accessible to all – offer a starting point in informing the public and creating a strong sense of community
“…public ar t pieces – which by nature are accessible to all –strong sense of community.”

At the new Fire Station No.5 – located at 10 Great Bear Boulevard W –the artist Hali Heavy Shield has painted a striking red, white and black mural spanning nearly 35 feet long. The text “Iiyikítapiiyi,” pronounced towards the stars in mid-sprint. “Be Brave” is written under the Blackfoot demonstrated by those protecting the growing west side community. By invoking imagery that would be traditionally found on a lodge or tipi, Heavy Shield extends feelings of home, humanity and strength to the new Iiyikítapiiyi is a welcome scene visible from the southern end of Metis Trail, as well as from the edges of neighbouring communities spilling into the surrounding area.

In addition to this stationary piece, be on the lookout for Kainai artist and blue painted horses gallop along the vehicle’s sides as an homage to balanced in elemental relationship with one another. The painted horses also hold special meaning as a symbol of good fortune and protection, a symbolic protection that references back to Heavy Shield’s mural. Black Plume’s design was originally intended to wrap one of the Oki signs set engine after a request from now-retired Fire Chief Marc Rathwell was received by Indigenous Relations and the Public Art Committee. This mobile piece of public art is also stationed at 10 Great Bear Boulevard, making this location a concentrated space of Indigenous voices. A garden, incorporating Indigenous plants, has also been planted with plans for descriptive educational panels to be installed alongside the living, growing work. These panels, created by Marjie Crop Eared Wolf with the assistance of Bryan Singer, will be highlighted in a future Arts Guide YQL publication.

Lethbridge is a community not solely because of the individuals here, but also by the way we relate to the environment around us. When friends and family visit, we speak about the coulees, and our wind, as much as we boast about the amazing local businesses. These public art pieces help to further secure our relationship to the environment around us, while simultaneously giving voice to an underrepresented demographic of artists who are stewards to the land we reside on.

Barvinok is produced by Pyretic Productions, a Canadian independent theatre company dedicated to pushing the boundaries and raising awareness about political and social issues affecting Canadians.
By Jana Mackenzie, AAC Editorial Assistant
Renowned for their entertaining and energetic musical revues, New West Theatre also presents contemporary Canadian plays that bring unique, and sometimes challenging stories to local audiences. This year, one of those productions is Barvinok, a play inspired by true stories and personal accounts

The artistic director of New West Theatre, Kelly Reay, explained that though this play is very topical, much of the writing, production, and The original material came from stories told to the playwright by her interviews, conducted in Ukraine throughout 2017 and 2018, of people context of the world has changed drastically since they started… it means something different and has a different impact.” For New West Theatre it is always about the storytelling. “This is a beautiful story with incredible heart and music and that is where it starts with us.”

Barvinok is a memory play, where the main character, Hania, speaks directly to the audience, telling the story through her memory of it. Her grandmother in long-term care, is haunted by her past and is holding a secret she had hoped to never reveal. As she ages, her agitation increases and she convinces Hania to return to their Ukrainian homeland to seek out a missing piece of family history. Hania’s search for answers places her directly has impacted the Ukrainian people and their communities.
Though the content and subject matter is dark, this story is about family and connections. Music is also a key component of this production, with hauntingly beautiful songs throughout the play. As Reay notes, Lethbridge audiences love music and programming live music is always a draw.

This is a story of war and trauma, and how the impacts of such spans generations. It exposes the struggles that existed in war-torn Ukraine in 1944, the atrocities caused by Stalin and Hitler, and draws parallels to the current regime in Russia. It is a look to the past, as well as a light shining on people and displaced millions. As stated by the artistic director of the Blyth Festival, Gil Garratt, this script was built through “grassroots, immersive story building… These artists have tried to hold the heart of Ukraine in their hands and share it. We are all richer for it.”
Barvinok runs from October 13 to 22 at the Sterndale Bennett Theatre, which provides a more intimate setting - ideal for a studio show such as this.

Another fabulous vendor-run event is the Hawk + Harvest Holiday Market + Online Market which will be held on November 30. Most vendors are local, though they also host creators from afar. This event is more than just handmade products, art, and fresh produce. It is about gathering and socializing, as well as giving back to the community, with a portion of admission proceeds donated to a local charity or cause.
On November 18 and 19 there are two artisan markets running Holiday Market at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery MAANSIKSIKSITSITAPIITSINIKSSIN (SAAG), showcasing local and regional artists that create unique, quality, handmade goods. Down the road from SAAG, the 10th annual Christmas at Casa will be in full swing with an annual market that includes over 100 artisan vendors, as well as food vendors, and live entertainment throughout the building. The hours of operation for both markets are 5pm to 9pm on Friday and 10am to 5pm on TheSaturday.
Oldman River Potters Guild annual holiday sale runs November 24 to 26 and is held at the guild-ran storefront and studio space (#2, 4416 – 1 Avenue South). Hours of operation are 12 to 8pm on Thursday and Friday, and 10am to 6pm on Saturday. The store is also open year-round from 10am to 2pm every Saturday, excluding long weekends.

Nikka Yuko Japanese Gardens (NYJG) is one of our city’s most treasured cultural assets. Constructed as part of Canada’s Centennial in 1967, this space pays tribute to the contributions that Japanese individuals and families have made to southern Alberta. This four acre garden has provided an opportunity for residents and visitors to experience the peace and serenity of the natural environment as expressed through Japanese garden architecture and culture.

SPIRITS BRIGHT MAKING
Until 2016 the garden was a seasonal attraction, open May through October. Extending the season and accessibility of the space became a priority for the organization, and so a look to winter programming became a focus. After years of discussion and planning, the Winter Lights Festival was born, bringing illumination to the darkest months of the year.

The gardeners at NYJG begin to set up the lights in October and work for two months to create the magic and wonder of this festival. Running from early December through to the end of January, this event continues to set new attendance records every year. In 2019, the festival of lights brought in over 16,000 attendees and just two years later that number rose to 23,000. During 2020, a time when the initial impacts of COVID-19 the gardens. However, by December, families and friends were eager to gather, and the outdoor experience provided a perfect venue, making up for the loss of attendance felt by the organization over that summer.

A 60-foot dome, built by Wesbridge Constr uction, will provide guests with a stunning visual experience where they can walk through a 360-deg ree animation projected across the walls of the space.
Also increasing in scale over the years are the number of lights on display In 2019 there were 150,000 light bulbs, but with the addition of a second light tunnel and other features, this number has risen to 170,000 light bulbs. Ice sculptures are also a feature of this winter wonderland, with two sculptures created in December and then, weather dependent, more ice sculptures to be created in January.

36 experience. A 60-foot dome, built by Wesbridge Construction, will provide guests with a stunning visual experience where they can walk through a 360-degree animation projected across the walls of the space. This project is a result of the partnership between NYJG and the Centre for Teaching, Learning, and Innovation at Lethbridge College, which originally began with the creation of a virtual koi pond in the newly constructed Bunka Centre. There are two animation sequences created at the College for the northern lights experience.
