Those of you familiar with YouTube and social media have probably seen his medical parody videos. Dr. Damania also has serious accomplishments in medicine and has a critical message for us. Dr. Joseph Lex, Jr., will also provide a keynote talk as he reflects on 49 years in emergency medicine. This promises to be a “can’t miss” talk. Educational Needs

In order to maintain their medical practice at the highest possible level, emergency physicians need up to date information on a variety of topics in emergency medicine, including both clinical and workplace issues. This conference will meet those needs by providing cutting edge information in several relevant areas. AAEM frequently polls its members for potential topics to be covered. A majority of the topics for 2016 were selected specifically on recommendation of a member. When planning activities, the AAEM Education Committee uses the 2013 Model of the Clinical Practice of Emergency Medicine to determine the education needs of the emergency physicians attending Scientific Assembly. The Model of the Clinical Practice of Emergency Medicine details the core content of emergency medicine and undergoes an on-going review.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for providers engaged in the practice of emergency medicine who are seeking the most current information in the field, presented at a skill level appropriate to the education needs of the emergency physician.

Learning Objective

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to apply new principles to improve their everyday practice of emergency medicine and to increase their understanding of the emergency medicine workplace.

Pre-Conference So You Think You Can Interpret an EKG? Session P01

Wednesday, February 17, 2016 1:00-5:00pm The Advanced EKG Interpretation course is designed for emergency physicians seeking more experience in critical EKG analysis for acute care settings. The course will encourage systematic review of EKGs with emphasis of important differentials, including prolonged QRS, ST-segment elevation, and T-wave inversion. The course will present an approach to difficult and challenging EKG assessment. Topics to be covered include a review of basic interpretation, ischemia and infarction, as well as various important EKG diagnoses. A series of challenging EKGs will be provided for discussion.

Learning Objectives At the conclusion of this presentation, each participant should be able to: 1. Describe a systematic review of an EKG, including axis, intervals, ST-segment, and T-wave abnormalities. 2. List a differential diagnosis for prolonged QRS complexes, and compare criteria that identify each. 3. Identify four STEMI equivalents that require urgent intervention after presentation.

Pre-Conference Public Enemy No. 1 — Obesity Challenges in the Management of the Morbidly Obese in the Emergency Department Session P04

Wednesday, February 17, 2016 8:00am-3:45pm Jointly Provided by CAL/AAEM According to the American Heart Association, currently, one in three U.S. adults is obese, and another third of Americans are overweight. In numbers, nearly 13 million children and 78 million adults in the United States are affected by the health and emotional effects of obesity on a daily basis. Not only is there a physical and psychological toll for the obese, there is also a fiscal toll in that the disease costs $190 billion a year in weight-related medical bills. A Gallup poll based on telephone interviews conducted November 7-10, 2013, with a random sample of 1,039 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia revealed that among actual health ailments, obesity ranks first at 13%.1 Are emergency physicians positioned to face this challenge? This course is designed to enlighten the emergency physician to the health care issues directly related to the epidemic of obesity in children and adults and to provide an avenue in which to manage these challenges in the emergency department (ED). The World Health Organization began sounding the alarm on obesity in the 1990s!2 Key Facts3 1. Worldwide obesity has more than doubled since 1980. 2. In 2014, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, were overweight. Of these over 600 million were obese. 3. 39% of adults aged 18 years and over were overweight in 2014, and 13% were obese. 4. Most of the world’s population live in countries where overweight and obesity kills more people than underweight. 5. 42 million children under the age of five were overweight or obese in 2013. 6. Obesity is preventable.

Simulation – Obstetrics Session P08a

Wednesday, February 17, 2016 12:30-4:45pm This simulation course is designed for emergency physicians seeking a practical, hands-on course in the management of critical obstetric scenarios including the performance of invasive procedures. Training is available for emergency physicians of all levels to teach skills not received during emergency medicine training, or to refresh delivery skills and procedures that are rarely used but “high-risk” when encountered in the emergency department setting. It will include didactic and intensive simulation training in four high-risk deliveries scenarios: breech, shoulder dystocia, nuchal cord delivery requiring resuscitation of both mother and fetus, and crash caesarean section. Junior physicians will have a hand at directing the management of simulated high risk obstetric scenarios. Senior physicians will be able to refresh their skills particularly in procedures and events that are infrequent in practice but high stakes when they are needed. Faculty will guide participants through the stations and provide not only core instruction in indication, performance and management of complications, but also share their “tricks of the trade.” Participants will receive hands-on instruction by experienced emergency medicine and obstetrics faculty. Task trainers and simulators will be used to recreate clinical vignettes. Critical actions will be reviewed and each participant will perform these simulated high-risk deliveries. A post-training summary will ensure understanding of steps necessary for successful high-risk deliveries.

Pediatric Emergency Immersive Simulation based course is designed for emergency physicians seeking to enhance their decision making and procedural skills in caring for critically sick children. The cases selected for this conference are not frequently encountered but carry a very high risk and emergency physicians from all levels will greatly benefit from them. Thursday, February 18, 2016 8:00am-12:00pm Jointly Provided by USAAEM The Uniformed Services Chapter Division (USAAEM) is offering a course detailing the process of disaster preparation, response, and management. We will rely on both the experience and wisdom of military medicine experts as well as numerous hands-on sessions to attempt to lessen the impact of a major disaster and assist in shortening the recovery period. Throughout the course the goal will be to allow the emergency medicine community to not only react to a devastating event, but also to minimize the impact by developing a strong foundation of knowledge and preparedness.

Accreditation Statement This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM) and the Uniformed Services Chapter Division of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (USAAEM). Learning Objectives 1. Explore the process of disaster preparation for both a prehospital system as well as an emergency medicine network. 2. Enhance the development of a mobile response unit in order to both triage and treat patients. 4. From 7:45am to 5:35pm on Friday, February 19, 2016, Assembly attendees have an opportunity to present a 25-minute lecture (20 minutes for presentation, 5 minutes for questions) on any topic of their choosing, allowing 16 “new voices” to be heard and evaluated by education committee members and conference attendees. The top two speakers will be invited to give a formal presentation at the 23rd Annual AAEM Scientific Assembly in Orlando, FL. Ten of the time slots will be filled in advance by email. Conference Cancellation Policy Refund requests must be submitted in writing at least one month prior to the event. A $50 processing fee will be charged for cancellations. Refunds are processed after the meeting. No refunds are granted if cancellation is received less than one month prior to the event. Special considerations will be given for health or family emergencies if requested in writing no later than 15 days after the last day of the meeting.
