Design Problem: Design a Tiny House of no more than 400 square feet using modular construction for a family of four that is responsive to local climate, economic factors, culture and a pandemic. The solution must exhibit how the design (interior & exterior) of a house this small can maintain/restore a sense of self, and social and cultural identity during a pandemic.

Goals: • Gain knowledge of Pandemics • Gain knowledge of the Tiny House movement
DS 220
• Gain knowledge of Modular Building Construction • Gain knowledge of global communities’ needs in time of a Pandemic. • Demonstrate how the design and placement of a house this small can maintain/restore a sense of self and social and cultural identity.
Spring 2020
• Demonstrate how the design addresses the specific needs of a family dealing with a pandemic.
Concept Statment: The concept of this design is to create a successful and functionl tiny home highrise space that meets the needs of a family of four in Shanghai during a pandemic. Sanitary precautions that need to be taken are facilitated by a sanitary entrance zone completewith a sink, UV disinfection light, and closet to keep coats and shoes that have been exposed to the outside. Aspects of multifuction are incorperated through the use of two murphy youth beds that can be folded up to create play space, a curtain to divide the parents bedroom into sleep and computer/work space, and the ability to move the dining table into the kitchen to create a meditation space in front of a Buddhist ritual wall.
