WHY NIF? The National Initiative Fund (NIF) was created to strategically advance recognition of ABPS Member Boards. NIF enables staff to work continually to create awareness and solidify recognition of all ABPS Board Certifications with influential stakeholders, including U.S. Congress, state legislators, state medical boards, hospital systems and health plans.

A Letter from the President Dear Fellow Diplomates & Members: I am proud to have served as President of the American Association of Physician Specialists. Our organization has continued its efforts to empower change within the health care community and has emerged even stronger over the past year. The involvement of Diplomate volunteers along with the very focused efforts of our headquarters’ leadership and staff, have made it possible for healthcare industry leaders to better understand the role the American Board of Physician Specialties plays in meeting today’s increasing Mark DeSantis, DO, MS, FAAR, AOBNM

needs of patient care.

ABPS’s pragmatic approach to certification enables today’s physicians to gain personal and professional advancement, while maintaining the highest of ethical and clinical standards. While not always a requirement, hospitals and other healthcare organizations are increasingly giving preference to board-certified physicians over those without equivalent credentials. Over the past year, we have gained greater understanding and recognition of the ABPS as a choice in board certification for both allopathic and osteopathic physicians. Our recognition achievements have been the result of our strong leadership efforts in unifying and maintaining consistent communications with key stakeholders and decision makers.

ABPS has established on-going dialogue and relationships with leading physician and healthcare organizations, public policy makers along with state and federal legislators. This has made a difference in strengthening the role of our Member Boards within the health care community. Your continued support and engagement make our mission possible. Please join me and the AAPS Board of Directors in celebrating the advancement of ABPS. With sincere thanks,

Mark DeSantis, DO, MS, FAAR, AOBNMÂ Â

Federal Regulatory and Legislative Activities For the first time in our organization’s history, our work has evolved to the highest level of interest and action. Over the past year, the efforts of Jeff Morris JD and Monique Tapie, our External Affairs consultant, have successfully shifted perception of physician board certification and the important role the ABPS plays in increasing the quality of patient safety and care. Key federal legislative offices and committees are now aware of the real dangers the on-going monopoly in physician board certification poses to patient safety and care. From physician care to the current opioid crisis, congressional members directly seek guidance and information from our team.

From a regulatory standpoint, and as the result of our team’s outreach efforts, multiple offices of Attorneys General have begun to proactively work with us to identify the monopolistic issues the ABPS faces on a regular basis. In addition, Mr. Morris and Ms. Tapie have begun to work with the FTC’s public policy and anti-trust litigation teams to break down physician practice barriers based on board certification. Our dedicated team is very excited about the pathway we are now forging – one that is driving greater awareness and action for your board certification.

Discussion on ABPS Recognition At last years’ annual meeting in Nashville, TN, NIF hosted its 2nd annual Panel Discussion on ABPS Recognition. Attendees heard first-hand from our experienced public affairs specialists how strategic Diplomate participation advances our recognition and government affairs efforts. The speakers included Jerry Allision, MD, Scott Barnes, DO, FAAIM, Linda Gray Murphy and Monique Tapie. The 3rd annual Panel Discussion will be held at this year’s meeting in Orlando, FL, Sunday, June 23rd at 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm. Please join your colleagues and become empowered to find your voice in advocating for recognition of your board certification.

ABPS On Doximity Member Boards of ABPS are in the process of being added to Doximity, the largest professional medical network for U.S. healthcare professionals. More than 70% of US doctors and 45% of all NPs and physician assistants are Doximity members. Clinicians can use Doximity on their iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Android device or computer to securely connect and collaborate with other healthcare professionals about patient treatment, identify appropriate experts for patient referrals, and manage their careers. ABPS has been communicating directly to potential physician board certification candidates over the past year on Doximity.

Completion of an AAEP recognized fellowship is one of the ways for physicians to become eligible to apply for Board of Certification in Emergency Medicine (BCEM) exam.

Physician Thriving Feature The ABPS newsletter introduced a new feature this past year, “Physician Thriving”, dedicated to the topic of physician wellness and resilience. Written by Hilary McClafferty, MD, FAAP, a nationally recognized leader in physician wellness, the column highlights current research, practical approaches, and useful resources. It also provides an avenue of connection for physicians interested in this critical topic. The goal of the newsletter column is to contribute to help readers cultivate a state of thriving in their chosen specialties.

New Enhanced Financial Reporting/Outsourced Controller Building on our strategic plan, AAPS has selected the Fontana CPA group as an outsourced controller. Working with AAPS staff, Eric Fontana and his team have added an additional level of transparency and continued GAAP compliance. Through a robust reporting process, budget analysis, KPI reports and detailed income and expense reporting AAPS can now better evaluate the success of each individual certification program. AAPS continues to evaluate and improve the current programs, software and databases enhancements, which are designed to help improve and enhance our members on-line experience while moving toward systems that will grow with the organization into the next decade.
