Dr. Zaia is an assistant clinical professor at the University of California at San Francisco and director of emergency ultrasound at Kaiser Permanente, San Francisco Medical Center. She works as an emergency medicine physician in San Francisco, with a special interest in point-of-care ultrasound education. She is a graduate of Stanford’s Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship and has directed and instructed ultrasound courses for four years.

This session will consist of a presentation to orientate Diplomates to the item writing process. The presentation will provide a brief overview of content development/ validity, standard setting, the purpose of item writing, and item development. The main focus will be on item development including: requirements for item writing, acceptable item formats, style guidelines, item classifications, and item review and approval process. An introduction to the online system for item writing will immediately follow the presentation. Open to all Diplomates.

Based on the current need for each specialty, activities performed during these workshops will include written exam item writing, item review and approval by board/ committee members, review of candidate comments made during the previous test administration, writing and review of oral cases, item referencing, and written exam review. Open to all Diplomates. For the security of exam content during the annual meeting, most item and exam development has moved to an electronic format. Bringing reference materials and laptops are strongly encouraged for exam development and would be productive in helping to facilitate your involvement with this CME activity.

His presentation will provide an overview of medical software applications that can help provide safer medical care and decrease the risk of adverse outcomes.

Improving Patient Safety. Dr. Amernath is chairman and medical director of Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare in Utica, NY, and clinical assistant professor at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. He has practiced emergency medicine for 20 years. His presentation will give an overview of the use of electronic medical records and ultrasound guided procedures to increase patient safety.

will present Preventing Transmission of Hepatitis B and C in Healthcare Providers. Dr. Berman practices gastroenterology at Florida Digestive Health Specialists in Largo, FL. He is an adjunct clinical professor at NOVA Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicine and an assistant clinical professor at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has practiced gastroenterology for 27 years. Dr. Berman will outline ways for healthcare providers to prevent transmission of hepatitis B and C, as well as signs, symptoms, and treatment options.

He will discuss healthcare facility policies and procedures related to infant abduction and abandonment.

present Preserving the Ocular Surface’s Role as a Barrier to Infection. Dr. Greiner is a clinical associate scientist at Schepens Eye Research Institute, director of the Boston Ocular Surface Center, and director of Clinical Eye Research of Boston. He has academic affiliations with Harvard Medical, Tufts University School of Medicine, and the New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has 25 years of experience in ophthalmology. Dr. Greiner’s presentation will cover the identification, treatment, and prevention of dry eye diseases that can cause irreversible damage to the ocular surface.

Dr. Kad is medical director of Louisville Metro Department of Corrections, part-time hospitalist at Baptist Hospital Northeast and professor at St. Catharine College. He has been in practice for over 38 years. His specialties include internal medicine, nephrology, and geriatrics. Dr. Kad will discuss the history of anti-obesity drugs, the link between Fen-Phen and pulmonary hypertension, and treatment modalities for pulmonary hypertension.

presentations. Dr. Mukau is chief of staff and attending emergency physician at El Centro Regional Medical Center in El Centro, CA. He has been practicing emergency medicine for 25 years. In Applying Lean Methodology and Current Best Practices to Emergency Department Operations: An Efficient Way to Improved Quality, Outcomes and Patient Safety, Dr. Mukau will explain how the application of Lean Methodology to healthcare can dramatically improve ED and hospital operations while boosting patient satisfaction scores. In Reducing Risk of Radiation Exposure from Computed Tomography: New Perspectives in Improving Patient Safety, he will discuss the rise in the use of diagnostic imaging procedures, cancer risks associated with these procedures, and strategies to reduce radiation exposure.

Dr. Pastin is president of the Health Ethics Trust in Alexandria, VA. He has served as an ethics advisor worldwide since 1973. This presentation will help physicians define their specific roles in reducing risks to patients and advancing patient safety. This presentation includes samples of risk reduction strategies along with metrics that can be used to test the effectiveness of these strategies.

will present Teach-Back Method: Preventing Readmissions and Medication Errors. Dr. Ringswald is medical director of hospital medicine at Baptist Hospital Northeast in La Grange, KY. Her specialties include internal medicine and hospital medicine. She has been practicing for 27 years. Dr. Ringswald’s presentation will give physicians a tool they can use to improve communication with patients, decrease medication errors, and reduce hospital readmissions.

Dr. Rodney will discuss improvements in office anesthesia, regulations, ASA risk classification, and reimbursement.

Investigate If Being Sued? Dr. Wang is a full-time emergency physician at Mee Memorial Hospital in King City, CA, and a part-time emergency physician at Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital in Hollister, CA. He is also an expert reviewer for the Medical Board of California. He has been practicing emergency medicine for eight years. Dr. Wang’s presentation will provide an overview of the role of state medical boards in lawsuits brought against physicians.

Join us on Monday, June 24, for an exciting ½ day walking tour (7:45 am to 1 pm) of the El Yunque Rainforest. This activity is free for all current Auxiliary members and their immediate family members (children and grandchildren 18 year of age and younger and spouse/ significant other). R egistration I nformation All attendees MUST REGISTER for the 2013 House of Delegates and Annual Scientific Meeting in order to attend any sessions including business meetings, continuing medical education activities, and/or certification examination development workshops.
