> > welcome Dear Fellow Diplomates & Members, Thank you for joining us at this year’s annual meeting and for your continued support of ABPS. It is only through our Diplomates’ and Members’ support and participation that we can continue to grow and succeed. This year has brought with it much change and along with it great advancement under the new leadership. These very advancements are strengthening our recognition and streamlining the processes for our Diplomates and new applicants. Under the new leadership, there has been a re-energized team with a true focus on strategic priorities that have advanced ABPS Boards of Certification. On the government affairs, communications and recognition front, they have achieved new heights of success including: · Overturning the Georgia legislation where we lost recognition last Spring, now our Diplomates can successfully practice and advertise their certifications; · Growth of ABPS recognition and continued defeat of the ABMS push within multiple states including a recent defeat of their monopolistic legislation in the state of Hawaii, as well as on-going defeat of the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact in numerous states, most recently in Texas; · On the Federal Level: high-level discussions with the FTC with new possibilities of presentation to the Commission on the potential anti-trust violations of ABMS;

Moving Forward 2016-2017 | 1

· Growth of Congressional discussions on ceasing the on-going monopoly with relationship growth before Members with oversight on HHS, FTC, VA, DOL and OPM; · Organized partnerships with leading entities creating deeper conversations with decision makers at State and Federal levels, including discussions with the House Physicians Caucus; · Increased efforts before hospital and managed care organizations resulting in greater recognition by hospital groups of all sizes in states such as New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Texas; · Proposed legislation in leading states such as New York with language inclusive of ABPS; · Expanded outreach through our marketing and conference efforts, doubling our attendance and exposure before key stakeholders.

We are very excited about the positive changes and continued growth within our organization...

In addition to great advancements in our recognition efforts, the ABPS Tampa leadership has placed great focus on listening to our Diplomates and applicants and have streamlined financial processes that impact the organization both internally and externally, some of which include but are not limited to: · Retention of a new, local, high ranking CPA firm: Thomas Howell Ferguson P.A.; · Restructured pricing for certification and recertification, providing greater options to both Diplomates and new applicants;

Moving Forward 2016-2017 | 2

· Restructured pricing for the Annual Scientific Meeting with reduced fees; · Auto Pay – allowing Diplomates to break up CMF payments; · Soon to be introduced, Aperture CVO will improve primary source verification, managed care recognition efforts as well as streamline the ABPS online application process. We are very excited about the positive changes and continued growth within our organization, a feat that can only be achieved when we are working together to build a stronger and more focused ABPS. The recent exponential growth of our Board of Integrative Medicine is proof of what true teamwork can do. We hope you join us in celebrating the collective accomplishments of our organization and its leadership and that this year’s annual meeting leads to further laying down the groundwork for success and drive of our organization. Kind Regards,

Craig S. Smith M.D. President

State Legislative Activities

ABPS is making great strides on multiple fronts. Here are some items of particular interest.

In an effort to advance ABPS recognition, the ABPS government affairs and communications team mobilized activities in 17 states during the past legislative sessions. The team successfully defeated the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact in 6 states including Texas, Arkansas, and Georgia. The team additionally defeated negative advertising bills in Oklahoma and Hawaii, while achieving a major victory in the state of Georgia by successfully repealing the negative advertising statute that was passed in 2016. Lastly, ABPS has been included in proposed positive legislation regarding a variety of issues outside of advertising, including the CME bill in New York, for which we continue to work with the bill sponsors on both the Senate and Assembly sides.

ABPS Hospital Recognition Panel Discussion Over the past year, we have worked with many Diplomates individually to help them obtain recognition in their locations. ABPS wanted to find a way to bring their stories to others. At this year’s annual meeting we will have our first panel discussion (Sunday, July 9th 1:30pm-3:00pm) at which Diplomates will describe their successes in obtaining recognition of their boards in hospitals, health systems, and by insurance providers. This will be an excellent opportunity to talk colleague-to-colleague about how each diplomate can be empowered to go home and advocate for recognition of their own boards. Moving Forward 2016-2017 | 4

Hospital Acceptance From working with our Diplomates to gain recognition in their own hospitals to increasing our awareness with key industry stakeholders, we have accomplished a lot over the past year in terms of hospital recognition. Throughout the year, the ABPS team has increased its presence at key industry conferences and summits, making physician and credentialing leaders aware of our growing recognition and positioning us as a true choice in today’s board certification marketplace. Participation at the Greely Company and HCPro meetings has led these key influencers to open a greater dialogue, further requesting information on ABPS boards. This dialogue has led to hospital acceptance of ABPS in NJ, PA and TX. Additional conversations are ongoing and should be finalized over the upcoming year. We are excited for the continued growth of our hospital recognition efforts.

Federal Regulatory and Legislative Activities There has been increased focus at the Federal level by our government affairs and communications teams. New relationships have been forged with congressional leaders that maintain oversight on HHS and OPM to begin efforts of language inclusion into labor handbooks. Together they are working to better define board certification to be inclusive of ABPS, as it is in CMS and DOL handbooks. In addition, relationships have been developed with congressional members with FTC oversight as well as directly with the FTC policy attorneys – all of whom have begun to review ABMS monopolistic activities and its negative impact on overall healthcare issues. Proactive alliances have been formed with other leading organizations facing the very same barriers created by current monopolistic practices giving us greater strength in numbers, as we take the lead. Relations continue to grow with the VA and direct collaboration with the Chair of the House VA committee. The team is also building strong alliances within the House Physicians Caucus.

Emergency Medicine CME Track Expanded Following the positive response to last year’s half-day emergency medicine CME breakout session, this year’s track has been expanded to a full-day program including ten emergency medicine presentations on topics related to New Developments In Today’s Medical World. Providing continuing education geared towards EM physicians helps to better meet the needs of a majority of the ABPS Diplomate audience.

Partnering With Aperture

Building Industry Leaders Through ABAM The first administration of the American Board of Administrative Medicine (ABAM) exam was held in October of 2016. As the healthcare industry continues to evolve, there is an increasing need for physicians experienced in business leadership and management. ABAM was developed to help identify and credential physician leaders throughout the industry, focusing on the core competencies required to manage the business side of medicine.

ABPS is partnering with Aperture Credentialing, Inc. to advance the credentialing of its Diplomate members. Aperture is the nation’s largest and most experienced provider of healthcare credentialing services, managing more providers than any CVO in the nation. “Aperture knows credentialing and will extend our ability to have ABPS Diplomates credentialed through its vast network,” said AAPS Executive Director Jeff Morris, JD. “We’re delighted to partner with Aperture because of its relationships among providers, payers and government,” he added.

New Competitive Pricing ABPS has introduced a competitive pricing model for initial and recertification applications and exams. The new pricing is competitively set in relation to market needs and trends while enabling applicants to select a timeframe that works best for them. Along with this option, retake fees have been reduced to $800.00, allowing the candidate to economically retake their written exam. Moving Forward 2016-2017 | 8

Volunteer SMEs Are Critical ABPS examination development relies on physician volunteers. These subject matter experts are an integral part of the entire exam development process from writing a new written item or oral case, to participating in item and exam reviews. Participation in these activities helps ensure a board certification that is both relevant and represents true everyday practice. The knowledge and expertise of ABPS volunteers are a valuable asset that strengthens the validity of the Member Board examinations.
