WHY NIF? The National Initiative Fund (NIF) was created to strategically advance recognition of ABPS Member Boards. NIF enables staff to work continually to create awareness and solidify recognition of all ABPS Board Certifications with influential stakeholders, including U.S. Congress, state legislators, state medical boards, hospital systems and health plans.

from the president’s desk Dear Fellow Diplomates and Members, Thank you for your continued support of the organization. It is only through our Diplomates’ and Members’ involvement and participation that we can continue to grow and make an impact by strengthening the role of ABPS in the healthcare community. Last year we discussed the concept of moving forward, which lead to strategic changes and advancements under the direction of new leadership. These adjustments have brought us successful developments. Awareness of the ABPS brand continues to grow through expanded event marketing and targeted advertising. These efforts have continued to help attract new visitors to our website. Our team has made great strides with Member Board recognition in several states. We are seeing more hospitals and industry-leading organizations update their definitions of board certification to include ABPS. We continue to improve efficiency of our certification processes, and have engaged a new certification verification organization (CVO) and new testing administration company. A vital component of this system is the active participation of physician

subject matter experts (SMEs). They are critical to maintaining our testing standards which is the basis of our credibility. Additionally, AAPS office technology improvements have increased the productivity of our operations to the benefit of Member Diplomates over the past year. The Board of Directors is pleased about the positive advancements of the organization and its growth in membership. I hope you will join us in celebrating these achievements. Together with your support and involvement, we will continue to grow and make a positive difference in the industry. With sincere thanks,

ABPS SMEs are Critical A central component to becoming board certified or recertified by the ABPS is the successful completion of a standardized, written examination. AAEP EM Fellowship Recognition Growing Over the past two years, participation in the Emergency Medicine Fellowship Recognition program has increased by 243%. Today, the American Academy of Emergency Physicians (AAEP) recognizes 14 programs and anticipates finishing the year with 17+ recognized programs. forward movement continued

Strategic Direction In order to set priorities, focus energy and resources, and strengthen operations, AAPS has undertaken a formal strategic planning process during the past year. The overall plan will help ensure that staff and other stakeholders are working diligently toward common goals, and establish agreement on intended outcomes for ABPS. This will also help AAPS management and physician leaders efficiently assess and adjust the organization’s direction in response to changes in the healthcare industry.

Panel Discussion on ABPS Recognition ABPS works with Diplomates to help them obtain recognition in their locations. This year’s annual meeting features our second annual panel discussion (Sunday, June 24, 1pm- 2:30pm) at which Diplomates and ABPS consultants/ lobbyists will share successes in obtaining recognition within states, health and federal systems. This will be an excellent opportunity to learn from your colleagues and ABPS team members how Diplomates can be empowered to advocate for recognition of their own boards.

State Medical Board Update ABPS achieved recognition by the Texas Medical Board for the Board of Certification in Emergency Medicine (BCEM) for advertising purposes. This recognition is good until 2023 at which time ABPS will seek renewal. Additionally, ABPS was successful in retaining the recognition of the Board of Certification in Dermatology by the Florida Board of Medicine during its third triennial review. The triennial renewal is a law in the state of Florida which requires all Dermatology certification boards be reviewed and reapproved by the medical board every three years.

forward movement continued State Legislative Activities ABPS lobbied on 60 bills in 29 states during the past year, including legislation in five states that dealt directly with advertising of board certification. Our national lobbyist defeated advertising bills in Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, and New Jersey. We worked to have ABPS included in such bills or kill them completely. We successfully stopped the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact bill from passing in eight states this year because it excluded ABPS board-certified physicians. Finally, ABPS was included in legislation in Oklahoma. At the time of writing this report sessions in some states were still ongoing.

Federal Regulatory and Legislative Activities Our efforts at the Federal level have vastly increased in 2017/2018 and have provided excellent results under the new ABPS leadership. In working with key congressional committees as well as senior legal experts in anti-trust, awareness of the monopolistic practices by the competing multispecialty board is now being viewed as negatively impacting healthcare and perhaps as an actual threat to patient safety and care along with rising healthcare costs. The work of our external affairs team along with our communications experts, have garnered us collaboration with the FTC, overseeing state legal entities, the Office or Personnel Management and congressional leadership. With greater awareness of the ABPS, congressional leadership has begun to seek insight and input from our organization on such issues as the opioid epidemic, physician shortages, military and veteran care, along with other priority healthcare issues.
