Andres Abreu, DO, will present Screening Mammography and Associated Medicare Costs in the Elderly. Dr. Abreu is Staff Radiologist and Medical Director, Dimensional Imaging, Inc., Sarasota, FL. He has practiced diagnostic radiology for four years, having completed his medical education at Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic radiology at the University of Michigan. His topic will cover mammogram screening guidelines and costs as well as types of breast cancers. An article by Dr. Abreu appears in the winter issue of the American Journal of Clinical Medicine®. Joseph M. Damiani, MD, FAAPRS, will present Breast Augmentation – The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. Dr. Damiani has practiced as a plastic surgeon for 30 years. According to Dr. Damiani, breast augmentation is a part of women’s health. This topic will clarify indications, procedure, post-op care, expected good results, complications, and need for future surgeries and revisions. Previously Dr. Damiani served as chairman of the ABPS plastic surgery board. Charles Patrick Davis, MD, PhD, will present Emergency Department Visits: Health Information Is A Female Burden. Dr. Davis, Staff Physician, South Texas Spine and Surgical Hospital in San Antonio, and board certified in emergency medicine, has practiced medicine for 23 years. According to Dr. Davis, most people are poorly prepared for a visit to an emergency room. When medical information is needed during emergency room visits, women are the individuals upon whom this burden falls in almost every case. His topic will show data that support this conclusion and discuss methods to lessen this burden. Franklin O. De La Cruz, MD, will present Hypertension in Pregnancy. Dr. De La Cruz has been a solo practitioner in a rural area for more than 18 years and is currently president of the Bardstown Women’s Center in Kentucky. Hypertension is one of the most common chronic medical problems seen in pregnancy. If physicians are better able to identify hypertensive disease in this population, it will greatly improve treatment and will result in positive outcomes.
Ken Flowe, MD, MBA, FAAEP, will present HIV and the Oppression of Women in East Africa. Dr. Flowe, Chief Medical Officer and Emergency Physician, Person Memorial Hospital, Roxboro, NC, has practiced emergency medicine for 17 years. According to Dr. Flowe, women are integral to many African cultures in ways Westerners do not understand. In many traditional societies, women are valued much more than they are in the West, while, at the same time, they often enjoy less autonomy or privilege. HIV has upset this delicate balance.
Surinder (Sam) K. Kad, MD, FACP, MPH, MBA, FAAIM, will present Amenorrhea: Diagnostic Evaluation and Treatment Options. Dr. Kad, currently Medical Director, Corrections Medical Services, Louisville, KY, and Hospitalist, Baptist Northeast Hospital in LaGrange, KY, has more than 30 years of experience in internal medicine, nephrology, public health, and preventive medicine. His presentation will focus on the algorithmic approach in which not every test is ordered to establish the etiology, but rather a review of presenting symptomatology is completed so that the need for very specific tests for diagnosis can be followed by appropriate treatment. David M. Lemonick, MD, FAAEP, FACEP, will make two presentations: Orthopedic Issues in Women and Recognizing and Treating Postpartum Emergencies. Dr. Lemonick, in practice for 26 years, is Attending Emergency Physician, Armstrong County Hospital, in Kittanning, PA. This is his ninth year as a Scientific Meeting presenter. In Orthopedic Issues, Dr. Lemonick will discuss the unique injuries that women suffer as well as new concepts in women’s orthopedics that should be of interest to most physicians. The risk for pregnancy-related illness and death do not end with delivery. Postpartum Emergencies will deal with what might happen to mother once the baby is delivered. Douglas L. Marciniak, DO, FAAIM, will present Heart Disease in Pregnancy. Dr. Marciniak is a cardiologist with Mercy Health System in Rogers, AR. He has practiced as a general and interventional cardiologist for 27 years. Numerous cardiovascular diseases can affect young women and can have potential serious consequences during the stresses of pregnancy. Dr. Marciniak will discuss hemodynamic changes during pregnancy, labor, and delivery. In addition, he will discuss drugs that are frequently required during pregnancy, specifically warfarin for valvular heart disease. David R. Meece, MD, FAAEP, will present Female Athletic Triad – Ramifications for Health. Dr. Meece is an Emergency Physician with Southeast Health Emergency Department, Cape Girardeau, MO. The number of girls and young women that participate in competitive sports and regular exercise has dramatically increased in the last 30 years, resulting in many proven health benefits; however, there is a small cohort that has developed a condition known as the Female Athletic Triad. Education and prevention, early detection, and treatment of this disorder are important to prevent potentially long-term, deleterious, and irreversible health problems. As in most conditions, prevention is superior to intervention. Leslie Mukau, MD, FAAEP, FACEP, will present Johns Hopkins and the Feminist Legacy: How a Group of Baltimore Women Shaped American Graduate Medical Education. Dr. Mukau, currently Emergency Department Chairman, El Centro Regional Medical Center, El Centro, CA, has practiced emergency medicine for 23 years. According to Dr. Mukau, a group of disenfranchised but determined women from Baltimore forced Johns Hopkins University to admit women on an equal basis with men to the soon-to-be started medical school. This group further stipulated admission criteria and medical school pre-requisites. Mark Pastin, PhD, will present Ethical Issues in Women’s Health. Dr. Pastin, President and CEO of Health Ethics Trust, has served as an ethics advisor worldwide since 1973. His regular feature in the American Journal of Clinical Medicine®, “Medical Ethics Without the Rhetoric”, has elicited many thought-provoking comments from the AAPS readership. Dr. Pastin has received outstanding reviews for his medical ethics course that is offered to ABPS Diplomates. According to Dr. Pastin, women’s health is critically affected by many “hot button” ethics issues relating to access.
Thomas G. Pelz, DO, FAAIM, will present Evaluation of the Woman with CAD. Dr. Pelz is a hospitalist at Boscobel Hospital in Wisconsin. He has practiced hospital medicine and internal medicine since 1983 in rural communities. He will discuss coronary artery disease in women, which, according to Dr. Pelz, is greatly underappreciated. John R. MacMillan Rodney, MD, will present Electronic Fetal Monitoring Update 2012: Family Medicine Obstetrics and Using iPhone and iPad Technology to Improve Obstetrical Ultrasound Skills in Rural Family & Emergency Medicine. Dr. Rodney is currently a Fellow in Maternal Child Health at John Peter Smith Hospital, Fort Worth, TX. According to Dr. Rodney, electronic fetal monitoring and obstetrical ultrasound are the basis for risk stratification and management during pregnancy. Wm. MacMillan Rodney, MD, FACEP, will present IUD Complications: Diagnosis, Management, and Reduction of Risk Using Bedside Ultrasound. Dr. Rodney is President and CEO of Medicos para la Familia, Memphis and Nashville. His 35 years of practice include surgical family medicine obstetrics, emergency medicine, and medical mission hospitals. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Clinical Medicine®. Medicos has developed risk management protocols for IUD management preconception, postpartum, and postmiscarriage. Lessons learned in mission hospitals are valuable stateside for the lowering of maternal and fetal mortality. Unplanned hyperfertility is a major women’s health issue. Betsy Brown Schenck, DO, FAAEP, will present The High Risk Woman: Age 18-24. Dr. Schenck, Staff Physician, University of North Texas Student Health and Wellness Center in Denton, has practiced medicine for 32 years including 21 years in emergency medicine. According to Dr. Schenck, this age group is not viewed as being especially high risk; however, many high-risk behaviors are most evident during these years. This age group feels many stressors brought about by college, searching for a job, and relationships. Some psychiatric conditions become apparent during this time. Eduardo C. Scholcoff, MD, will present Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO): Essential Emergency Skills in OB. Dr. Scholcoff has been a family medicine physician for 16 years and is currently a physician at the Norwegian American Hospital. According to Dr. Scholcoff, since the early 1990s the ALSO course grew as the cornerstone for training for obstetrical emergencies. Today, it is also a reference for non-emergency but critical obstetrical situations.

Gary L. Shultz, DO, FAAR, will present Locally Regional Advanced Breast Carcinoma Treatment with IMRT Corresponding Reduction in Organ at Risk. Dr. Shultz is currently employed by the Christie Clinic, University of Illinois Urbana/Champaign. He has practiced radiation oncology for 31 years. Dr. Shultz’s presentation will discuss the latest radiation effects on the breast and optimal radiation treatment.

CLIMATE AND CLOTHING
The summer months typically vary from a high of 73° to a low of 56°, and it can be overcast - “June gloom.” Check local listings to determine weather conditions. Casual clothing is recommended with the exception of Saturday evening when a jacket and tie for men (black tie is optional) and corresponding attire for women is requested. You may want to bring “layers” of clothing to accommodate all meeting room temperatures. As you know, meeting rooms can sometimes get chilly!

IMPORTANT REGISTRATION INFORMATION Attendance Policy: You must register for the 2012 House of Delegates and Annual Scientific Meeting in order to attend any sessions including business meetings, continuing medical education activities, and/ or examination development workshops. All persons attending must pay the appropriate registration fee in advance regardless of the purpose or the number of meetings you plan to attend. To complete registration for the 2012 Annual Meeting, all fees must be paid in full in advance. See Registration Form for specific information. Confirmation of Registration: A confirmation packet will be mailed within two (2) weeks of receipt of your registration form and PAID IN FULL registration fees. Please retain copies of your registration information. If you do not receive a confirmation packet within two weeks, please contact the AAPS Meetings Department immediately. Schedule changes beyond AAPS control may occur. AAPS is not responsible for notifying registrants of program changes prior to the meeting.
Cancellation Policy: Written cancellations must be received by the AAPS Meetings Department prior to April 15, 2012, in order to receive a refund of Meeting Registration Fees, less a $150 processing fee. Cancellations received after this date will not be accepted. 1. Commercial Interest: The ACCME defines a “commercial interest” as any proprietary entity producing health care goods or services, used on, or consumed by, patients, with the exemption of non-profit or government organizations and non-health care related companies. Financial relationships: Financial relationships are those relationships in which the individual benefits by receiving a salary, royalty, intellectual property rights, consulting fee, honoraria, ownership interest (e.g., stocks, stock options or other ownership interest, excluding diversified mutual funds), or other financial benefit. Financial benefits are usually associated with roles such as employment, management position, independent contractor (including contracted research), consulting, speaking and teaching, membership on advisory committees or review panels, board membership, and other activities from which remuneration is received, or expected. ACCME considers relationships of the person involved in the CME activity to include financial relationships of a spouse or partner.
Relevant financial relationships: ACCME focuses on financial relationships with commercial interests in the 12-month period preceding the time that the individual is being asked to assume a role controlling content of the CME activity.
