Moss Sanctuary Improving a park’s public appeal through wayfinding + physical intervention.

1990 Aerial Photo

Various site visits to Moss Sanctuary confirmed its unfortunate underutilization by the Mansfield + UConn communities. The various entrances were hidden from public view, preventing the natural resource from realizing its potential as a local respite and recreation hub. The main entrance in particular limited public access, especially for people with disabilities, due to its location at the bottom of a long staircase through an apartment complex.

Livable Lanes Learning from precedent to make the transition to autonomous vehicle networks safe, beneficial, and equitable for all stakeholders. The current dialogue pits one side, which believes autonomous vehicles will save lives and make us more productive, against the other, which warns about the societal consequences of widespread AV usage. To understand the potential impacts of the technological shift we are about to endure, let us consider the last major transportation disruption in American cities: the rapid deployment of the automobile in the early 20th century. American urban streetscapes were ill-prepared for cars; many pedestrians were killed by drivers navigating streets without markings or signals. To get ahead of the rising opposition to automobiles, the manufacturers got together and drafted the 1927 Model Municipal Traffic Ordinance, which created road laws and layouts to limit pedestrian-vehicle interactions. The legislation saved lives, but it also proved to be good business for carmakers, as vehicles received more road space and rights of way than pedestrians, who were relegated to sidewalks. The resulting car dependency throughout the U.S. has had negative social and public health consequences since. Livable Lanes is a proposal for New Haven’s designation as a testing location for autonomous vehicles (CT SB No. 220). It demonstrates today’s opportunity to design infrastructure that focuses on fulfilling the wants and needs of all of the city’s residents in addtion to saving lives.

Tripoli Go Developing a transit system to facilitate diversifying Libya’s economy.

Oil products make up 97% of Libya’s exports, making the nation the most dependent on oil production in the world. Libya also has the world’s highest rate of road fatalities per capita by a factor of two. As global oil demand is expected to decline, seismic change is necessary for Libya’s people to realize a brighter future. User Experience

Train Mode

- High speed travel between different parts of the city - Vehicles combine propulsion systems to save energy - Power transfered between cars to boost electric range - Passengers can transfer cars while moving to create more efficient routes

Roam Mode

- Low speed maneuvering through city streets - Vehicles monitor pedestrian activity to locate potential users - Pedestrians maintain right of way, vehicles navigate among foot traffic - Users hail cars with simple hand or body gestures

Singapore 2025 What is the role of an automobile in a car-free city? Cities around the world are taking steps toward banning cars in their urban cores in order to improve air quality and promote biking + walking. This interior design project examines the challenges cities will face in this ambitious endeavour.

Limited land availability

Socioeconomic diversity

Transitblocking hazards

Strong government support for the development of technology + infrastructure

High-density cityscape w/ few nonurban areas

Transit malfunctions

Extreme weather

Natural Disasters

Inebriated Transit users

Acts of Terror

Public chaos from these or other scenarios

Obstacles to a 100% car-free city:

Infrequent service late at night

Mission

Supplementary transportation to account for any deficeits in Singapore’s public transit system as the city dramatically reduces car usage.

Extremely high cost of personal vehicle ownership

extensive public transit coverage

A city with the perfect combination of qualities to go carless
