Message from your Lieutenant Governor Hi Division 11, Welcome to the summer! I hope that you have had a great school year and will have an even greater summer. It is my mission to bring service opportunities to you no matter what the season. Key Club operates 365 days a year, and so will I. I encourage all members to attend Key Club events during the summer. It is a great way to get involved and spend your time. Through service projects, you will be able to obtain various skills and experiences that will help you grow as a person. I challenge each and every one of you to complete at least 30 hours of service over the summer. It does not have to be in Key Club, but it should relate to our core values and/or objects. Continue the great work! Yours in Caring and Service, Aaron Cheung Division 11, New York District Key Club 2014-2015 Lieutenant Governor 2013-2014 Divisional Executive Assistant

International Convention By Aaron Cheung, Lieutenant Governor, Bronx HS of Science International Convention is the largest event in the service year. About 1,600 members gathered in sunny Anaheim, California to celebrate our accomplishments, learn about service projects and discover new ways to improve our home, school and communities. My experience at ICON was amazing. I connected with other members from our home district, such as Logan Graham and Fallon Blacharski and members from other districts, such as Dylan Colby from the Capital District and Pak Chau from the New Jersey District. There are over 32 countries part of our amazing organization with members all committed to the same core values. I am also honored that the Bronx HS of Science was recognized as a Distinguished Diamond Level Club during International Convention. Job well done! It is my greatest honor to represent Division 11, its members and mission, at the International Convention. I am so proud to represent one of the strongest divisions in Key Club International.

Major Amendments 

Honorary members cannot be enrolled in a high school and are no longer entitled to any privilege of a Key Club member.



International Dues has been increased by US$.50 to US$7.00. Our combined district and international dues is now $13.00.

BEST WEEK OF MY LIFE By Kalvin Chi, Historian, Stuyvesant HS I thought the Leadership Training Conference (LTC) was the most incredible and lifechanging experiences of my life. That is, until I attended the International Convention (ICON). This year, ICON was held in Anaheim, California from July 2-July 6. Before ICON, the New York District went on a district tour in which we explored places such as San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Yosemite National Park. After the district tour, we headed to Anaheim. When we arrived, we walked around and met many Key Clubbers from other districts and countries. It was great meeting so many new people who shared the same passion as I did—to serve. The meet and greet provided me with another opportunity to meet Key Clubbers from all over the country and even outside of the country, as well as to trade pins and get pins from places outside of New York. I attended several workshops such as the “Tools for Team Building” workshop, the “Nickelodeon Worldwide Day of Play” workshop (Run by our lieutenant governor Aaron Cheung and our immediate past lieutenant governor Lillian Xie), the “You'd Better Recognize!” workshop, and several other workshops which were all incredibly enlightening. I even got the opportunity to go to Downtown Disney several times over the course of ICON! Overall, ICON was one of the most incredible and life-changing experiences of my life. I was able to meet new people, not only from our district, but from districts all over the world as well and attend workshops which will really help me later on in Key Club. I will definitely be attending ICON next year in Indianapolis, where all branches of the K-Family will be present and I hope to see many of you there!

ICON Hype! By Kiyoon “Bryan” Ko, Lieutenant Governor, Capital District Hi New York District Division 11 Pandas! It is a great honor to be writing an article for you guys! I met Aaron and Kalvin at ICON and I gotta say, it was a great time! Imagine your DCON (LTC), where all key clubbers from New York were spirited and excited. And now imagine ICON, where key clubbers from AROUND THE WORLD were willing to serve and shared the passion that they have for Key Club. My experience in Key Club is indescribable; I definitely recommend that everyone attend ICON, I mean, TRICON 2015 in Indianapolis, Indiana! It will definitely be worth the trip and hopefully I will be able to meet you all! I want to leave you all with these words: It doesn't matter if you're a club president, lieutenant governor, district governor, international trustee, or an international president. Each and every one of you is a leader and each of you has the power to influence those around you!

ICON in Review By Michelle Peterson, Immediate Past Key Club International Trustee I’m Michelle- one of the luckiest teenagers out there because I was able to serve as one of Key Club’s International Trustees this past year. As an International Trustee, I served on two of the International Board’s committees as well as functioned as a liaison and a representative for the New York, Capital, Ohio, and Rocky Mountain Districts of our organization. Just as your District Board leaders organize your annual Leadership Training Conference (LTC), the International Board runs the yearly International Convention (ICON). This year’s ICON was a four day event in the beautiful city of Anaheim, California, right outside of Disneyland. The Anaheim Marriott served as the home of over 1,600 Key Clubbers from all over the world during the convention and, as one of those attendees, I can truly say it was the highlight of my summer. The members who attended ICON were able to see firsthand how the event packed business, fun, and inspiration into every day of the convention. On the business side of things, there were 56

informational workshops for members to choose from, and two House of Delegates sessions were held, which led to five different amendments to our international bylaws being passed. These amendments included the raise of international dues to US $7.00 and the ability of high school students of any grade level to be able to be members of our organization. The attendees were also able to elect the new thirteen members of the 2014-2015 International Board- one president, one vice president, and eleven trustees- and retire trustees- and retire myself and my fellow 2013-2014 International Board members from office. However, ICON wasn’t four days of simply elections and meetingsthe event also had two dances, a meet-and -greet session with live music, a Key Club talent show, three inspirational and captivating speakers, and countless opportunities for everyone to make new friends and create memories in sunny California. In addition to all of that, past

Congratulations to the 2014-2015 International Board International President Maria Palazzolo district board members, clubs, and advisors from around the globe were recognized for their achievements throughout this year and over the course of the convention. More than $900 was raised for The Eliminate Project during ICON Although the 2014 Key Club International Convention marked the end of my term as your International Trustee, as well as a member in the organization that has forever changed my life, it isn’t possible for me to remember it with any negative feelings, as it was another opportunity for me to connect with the incredible Key Clubbers that have come to be my second family. If you’re interested in seeing some footage from this year’s ICON, check out Key Club International’s YouTube channel. Better yet, if you’d fancy the chance to experience an International Convention for yourself, look for information on the 2015 ICON in Indianapolis, Indiana at your next Leadership Training Conference!

Egg Rolls and Egg Cream Festival I spent the first two hours guarding the instruments that the musicians would play at the festival. The festival included The Egg Rolls and Egg Cream festival took talented, senior Chinese musicians and place on Sunday, June 8, 2014. It other musicians, who lightened up the celebrated both the Chinese and Jewish festival by inviting the volunteers and the culture. There were many activities that crowd to join together in dancing to took place during the festival; these some nice music. Afterwards, I was free to activities included making paper fans, take a look around the festival. I spent decorating your own kippahs, and the most of the day around the gift shop, selling of egg rolls and egg cream. It was introducing, and advertising products to my first time tasting an egg cream and the customers. This was rather fun making it involved the process of because advertising the items included squeezing chocolate syrup into a cup, playing with them or showing how they adding milk, stirring, and then adding worked, which caught the customers’ seltzer water to the mixture. It sort of interests. I also ventured to the paper fan tasted like carbonated chocolate milk— table later on to join other volunteers in different and weird, but surprisingly, not making paper fans and helping kids with bad. I also tried the egg roll which tasted it as well. Later on, after we all cleaned okay. I was grateful for the free food you up, we all headed into the synagogue, get for volunteering because I did not which hosted the festival, to take a group bring anything else to eat and had only picture. It was a nice event; I got to meet brought five dollars with me (I had spent new people and make new friends. one dollar on a metal kazoo bought from the festival’s gift shop).

Division 11 BBQ

Yingchao He, Bronx HS of Science

$530.00

Division 11 held its 4th annual barbecue in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park on Saturday July 12, 2014. Admission was twelve dollars per person and it included food, various games, prizes, and officer auctions. The July Divisonal was also held during the barbecue. While everyone was enjoying their hotdogs and hamburgers, there were many complimentary events occurring as well. During the three-legged race, I teamed up with Jenifer Zheng, and the two of us competed with a number of other teams. Another game that we played was called Ninja, where we would only be able to make one move to avoid or attack another player's hand. Lastly, there was the infamous officer auction. Some people who were auctioned off included Lieutenant Governor of Division 11, Aaron Cheung, Immediate Past District Governor, Paul DeSantis, Lieutenant Governor of Division 8, Henry Wang, Lieutenant Governor of Division 9, Clifford Young, Lieutenant Governor of Division 10, Ryan Coffey, Circle-K Trustee of Subregion F, Kelly Chan, Distinguished Senior Member, Terrell Merritt, Immediate Past Distinguished District Treasurer, Alex Mok, Immediate Past District Webmaster, Jimmy Lin, and Divisional Historian Kalvin Chi. Each person who won the auction was enabled to use two bottles of silly string and a bag of water balloons on their "prize". All in all, while raising a lot of money, everyone had a great time during the barbecue.

Anik Golder HSMSE High School 2010-2013 Key Club Member 2013-2014 Club Kiwanis Relations Head 2013-2014 Club Project Coordinator 2013-2014 Divisional Events Committee It seems just like yesterday that I had joined Key Club. Trying to get the 200 hours requirement for my school seemed impossible and Key Club seemed like the best option. All that mattered was getting as many hours as possible. When I look at myself now and think of that time that I was trying to collect hours as if they were Easter Eggs on Easter seems like a fantasy story that would be in a category with Cinderella or Snow White. Key Club isn’t a club— it’s a life style, a family, and a gateway to a brighter future. I will never forget all the friends I have made and it has been a blast. There’s also the family I made at the 5th Ave. Presbyterian church. Through Key Club, I first volunteered at Meals on Heels at the church. Through the years I have spent almost every Saturday at the church volunteering. They have not only accepted me as a volunteer, but as one of their own. On April 27th, I was a chef at the church. Key Club has truly been quite the experience and the people who I’ve met along the way have their own section in the cabinets in my brain that I store all my memories in. It’s a good thing that I’m going to Stony Brook next year; I will be joining their Circle K and I’m also close enough to the city that I can easily come back to a divisional or event and see all my friends. Keep doing what you do Key Club because each and every single one of you is a stepping stone to a brighter future. Never forget Key Club and never forget what it has taught you and the people you have befriended because of it.

Terrell F. Merritt Bronx HS of Science 2011-2013 Key Club Member 2013-2014 Distinguished Senior Key Club Member My time in Key Club is coming to an end, but for many of you it is just beginning. I cannot describe how jealous of many of you I am. This especially goes to the freshmen members, whom I wish I could have been. I wish that I would have spent the time that I do now, in Key Club, when I was your age, but I made the most of my Junior and Senior years in Key Club, and I wish I could show that in more ways than this farewell. I thank many of you for believing in my ability to serve as I have. But it would have been very difficult for me to reach the levels that I have without the inspiration of a strong division like our Division 11 and a strong club like Bronx Science Key Club. I love being a Key Club member; we volunteered simply because it was our way of life. Coordinators and organizations would be shocked when they only saw a few people request service letters or realized that we felt good (oh we felt so good!), because it was never about what was convenient for us, but about what was convenient for them. Many people ask me why I am so dedicated to this club, and the answer very simply lies in my never forgetting the stories behind the groups I volunteer my time for -- whether they are eliminating Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus or helping disabled athletes to continue in their sports. Even though I am leaving, I am glad to be leaving Key Club in the hands of some truly amazing people. Never stop caring!

Donna Youn LaGuardia High School 2012-2013 Vice President 2013-2014 President If I must be completely honest, I have been selfish with Key Club. I received more from this organization than I gave. I learned about numerous actions and unspoken kindness through extraordinary events. Key Club evolved me and helped me grow throughout my high school years and I have yet to properly thank the people who made up my time in Key Club. It's strange yet remarkable how much the slightest social interaction can change and lead a community. I regret that I could not have given more to the community that filled me up with unforgettable experiences, passion, and love. Key Club makes me unbelievably proud and full of content; it's more than exciting to even think about how it will continually evolve more and the people involved.

Leaving the people and memories that I’ve come to cherish over the years will make it all worth it the next time I visit and see new faces, new chances and new leaders. You may not believe it, but if you continue to commit to this organization, you will be amazed by what a large, strong, and spirited community you are a part of. I wish you all luck, and to keep striving for your passion!

Morad Hassan NEST+m High School 2013 Key Club Member 2013-2014 Divisional Events Committee 2013-2014 Divisional Historian We all have our reasons for joining Key Club. However, when we stay, meet other people, and become more open to those around us, we begin building memories that stay with us longer and that are more powerful than we could ever imagine. Those memories, along with defeating those fears of being open, is what builds leadership and that's why Key Club is so incredible. As small as my role or involvement was, it still effected me. So, thank you for giving me memories I won't forget, and thank you for helping to give me meaning to who I am. See ya, Key Club.

DAROM

Alexander Mok Sunnyside Key Club 2010-2011 Club Member 2012-2013 Club Treasurer 2013-2014 Distinguished District Treasurer 2013-2014 Honorary D11 Panda I've been told repeatedly that the Key Club year never ends, but sadly, that is not the case for me. As my Key Club journey comes to a close and I reflect on the times that Key Club has shaped my life for the better, there are certain moments that I must mention to keep up with the sappy tone. Some of you know that I do not like to specify and, sometimes, I do not even know what Division I am a part of, but most of you know that the answer is not Division 11. At every divisional meeting and divisional event, however, I have been treated with kindness and respect. Throughout this service year as your District Treasurer, I have felt like a member in Division 11 thanks to you all. Many of you also know that I am pursuing my education outside New York at, whether you choose to believe it or not, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. You might be wondering if MIT has a Circle K, and, as a followup question, if I will be a part of it. The answer is no to both, but I do not say that with sadness because Key Club has prepared me so well to deal with the lack of a Circle K. Though, on the surface, Key Club encourages us to join Circle K to continue serving, its message to me has so much more substance. Key Club has made serving a part of my life in the sense that it is not necessary for me to join Circle K to have motivation to serve. So with that, I encourage you all to continue making memories and serving as Key Clubbers, as Circle K members, and as Kiwanis members, but I ask that you look at your long term goals. What do you really want to accomplish as a Kiwanis family member? Think about it, and let me know when we see each other again.

Herman Li Bronx HS of Science 2010-2011 Key Club Member 2011-2012 Executive Assistant 2012-2013 Lieutenant Governor 2013-2014 Key Club Member I don’t like to make goodbye letters in general since it is never really a goodbye, it’s more like an “I’ll be back” as the Terminator would phrase it. But the past four years have flown by in Key Club and the people I have met have really become my second family. The times I would spend volunteering were not only making a difference in the world but to join this family that we call the K family! My advice for all you youngsters still in Key Club is to take the time to appreciate the stuff you volunteer for and enjoy it as well. As for those looking to run for higher office as Nike would say it “Just do it”; if you get elected, prove those who doubted you wrong and if you don’t, life is just a game of baseball, except you don’t strike it so keep on trying until you succeed. I won’t be going too far away just 6 hours away in Rochester (visit me please) and I will be joining my school’s Circle K so you will probably see me in more events in the future. I’ll end this letter with not a goodbye but as how I started this, I’ll be back.

Eliminate Project What is it? The Eliminate Project is working together with Kiwanis International and UNICEF to eliminate Maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT). Every nine minutes, a baby dies of MNT. Some of the effects of MNT in newborns are repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. However, $1.80 is able to immunize one mother and her future baby from MNT. Together, we have been able to provide vaccines to immunize millions of mothers and their future babies from this disease. Now, MNT is being eliminated from several countries around the world and hopefully, one day, through the efforts of UNICEF and the K-Family, MNT will be eliminated from the face of the Earth.

Facts and Figures (Accurate as of 7/7 9:98 PM EST) 

Division 11 has raised $1,976.00 in the 2014-2015 service year

Key Club International has raised a total of US$2,432,905.64

Key Club International wants every club to raise $2 for the Eliminate Project per member.

The Kiwanis Family has raised US$54 million for the Eliminate Project

MNT has been eliminated from 35 countries

There are still 24 countries with MNT

Madagascar was the latest country to have MNT eradicated
