Alternative Media Studio: Copy Right
This project explores the dysfunction and decay of the 20th century suburban condition through the lens of narrative. This fictional case study follows a farmer who through good intentions begins to prep for a possible future that he hopes wont happen by collecting and organizing various types of agricultural seed. Over time he grows more and more paranoid falling into a state of disrepair and his original actions of preparatory care turn into an obsessive hoarding. For the entire project as well as the studio as a whole students were tasked with using only preexisting content found online. Over the course of the semester the students developed a working archive that each student could pull imagery from to use in there images.

Studio Copy Right: Prelims 8
Culliton | Design
Studio Copy Right consisted of preliminary probes to begin the semester that focused on developing a visual consistency as well as gaining the skills necessary to conduct an entire semester in Photoshop. All content that was used was taken from internet searches and archived into a studio wide bank of images that could be pulled from. Each image that was sampled into the composition was then labeled with a tag giving reference to where the image was taken from.

The building is built around the cultures that both the Museum of walking and B-Corp companies share and foster. Community, and outreach are the main focuses of the design. At the center of the building sits an atrium clad with bent cedar that cascades upward towards the sky. There is an intended visual connection between floors from the podium level through the offices finally connecting to the apartment levels. This connection enhances the narrative of community and can be experienced as you ascend on the elevator. The Museum of Walking encompasses the building from the outside, wrapping around each program as it moves vertically. It is more than just a space for artifacts to be curated. It is a culture, an ideal meant to be explored and discovered. It celebrates the movement and community shared by the people who bring the building to life. Where the atrium pulls the project together form the inside, so does the Museum of Walking from the outside. The Museum of Walking takes the visual connections of the atrium and makes physical bridges between them while promoting healthy lifestyles and staying true to the encompassing importance of the community.

Our investigation into Los Angeles’ rise of low and middle income residential emigration exposes the need for affordable housing, sustainable living practices, accommodating mass transit systems, and efficient construction methods. Our design research explores opportunities to create a mass-customizable and sustainable housing market, define an open source construction process, and maximize the user ’s resourcefulness to develop a greater degree of authorship. Our research led us to focus on low and middle income residents that live in central Los Angeles, more specifically the Boyle Heights neighborhood. It was located in proximity to available manufacturers, contained our focus user, and had access to multiple forms of public transportation. As the need for inhabitant conforming housing grows and the trend of multi family structures rise, a case study which provides basic amenities, molds to current standards of living, and explores typical user situation will continue to develop our discipline’s understanding of residential architecture by joining and influencing the greater conversation.

Photography
Photography provides for the creator a way in which they can show the world a perspective of their surroundings that may not have been realized before. It brings to existence a vision that only resided in the imaginative perspective of the person holding the camera. Photography can be used in many ways to highlight and showcase architecture so that it can be seen in the same light that was imagined by the architect.
