The B-Corporation certification process begins by completing the “B Impact Assessment. In order to pass you must earn a score of at least 80 out of 200. A company can earn points in the many different ways that they are impacting the other businesses and people who they are involved with. B-Corp companies are filed into four different categories based off of the type of business that they are and who they are positively impacting. The four different categories are: governance, workers, environment, and community.

The construction process starts with a raised platform with a formal gesture funneling traffic into the main entry underneath the atrium inside the building. The circulation core for the building houses the elevator shaft as well as the emergency exits, and runs for the utilities. The glulam posts are laid out on a 20’ x 20’ grid to accommodate the size and ratio of the CLT panels that make up the floor. The beams are oriented to allow for ease of access for utilities to different areas on the floor plans and for structural efficiency. The floor is made up of three layers. The first layer is 20’ x 10’ CLT panels that are bolted to the glulam beams below. The second layer is a 1/2” membrane of polystyrene that acts as both a protective layer for the CLT as well as an insulating barrier. The third and final layer is 6” of poured concrete that is cast in place on top of the other layers, and houses in floor radiant heating tubes. It is fastened in place with fins that are cut into the CLT, and stick through the polystyrene layer. The steps are repeated for each floor above. The MOW is built in at the end of the process and is constructed out of pre-fab CLT pieces that are shipped to the site.

Where the atrium brings the project together from the inside, so does the Museum of Walking from the outside. The Museum of Walking takes the visual connections of the atrium and makes physical bridges between them while promoting healthy lifestyles and staying true to the encompassing importance of the Community.
