Our goal is to launch an exclusive Shadowman shoe - only 500 pairs to be made. In concert with a private viewing of the new Richard Hambleton movie by Academy Award Nominated Director Oren Jacoby, a pop-up experience allowing a select group of guests access to Richard Hambleton’s artwork and the limited edition shoes. We plan a private viewing of the movie followed by a pop-up gallery where the shoes will take centre stage amongst a life size photo murals and large prints of richards shadow figures caught on film during his reign as king of the Downtown New York street art movement during the 80’s. Taking the pop-up gallery and shoes to cities around the world where the shadowman works used to stalk the streets. New York. London. Paris. Milan. Berlin. Tokyo.
The undisputed “Godfather of Street Art”, Richard Hambleton was born in Vancouver in 1952. In the early 80’s Richard was more famous and his artwork more sought after than his contemporaries Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. While Basquiat and Haring became victims of the scene, Hambleton survived and disappeared until the last 10 years brought back a ghost. Thrust back in the limelight thanks to attention from Armani, Phillips Gallery and now Amazon who have secured the rights to Shadowman, Richard still paints his shadow figures today. The last living member of the Downtown Street art kings with Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. The artist that said no to Andy Warhol The foundation and inspiration for Blak Le Rat and Banksy. When Richard reigned the streets of Downtown New York and covered the walls, he did it wearing the Nike Cortez. Now, 30 years later, we aim to created a Shadowman edition Nike Cortez shoe (limited to 500 pairs) that embodies the symbol and mascot of myth that is Richard Hambleton. Provided in a shoe box that will reflect the freedom and rawness of the Shadowman, the entire edition will be a testament to the artist and his legendary work. Delivered in a custom dust bag and collectable artwork box, each recipient will receive a custom SHADOWMAN Nike hooded sweatshirt, branded paint brush (similar to that which Richard paints the Shadowman with) and a small limited edition print of a Shadowhead. All items will only be produced to fulfil the 500 pairs of Nike Cortez, and then be retired to enhance their exclusivity and worth.
POP-UP GALLERIES Our plan is to curate a number pop-up galleries is key locations around the world that best represent and showcase the influence The SHADOWMAN has had on street culture. Cities such as Richards adopted home New York City, London, Berlin, Paris, Milan & Tokyo. The Galleries will house a small collection of original shadowman works along side large scale photographs taken during his time in the 80’s and dominating the downtown street art scene. Amongst all the SHADOWMAN works and photoraghs the shoes will be showcased as their own piece or art and to exhibit their importance in the continuation of the SHADOWMAN legacy. The pop-up gallery will be open for all 48-72 hours in each city and will be the only location in that city and country where these limited editionshoes will be available. Each pop-up gallery will be limited to 100-150 pairs (depending on the total amount of pop-ups galleries held)
Collaboration launch To Celebrate the launch of the collab and the opening of the pop-up galleries in each of the selected cities the gallery before opening to the public will also house a private cinema room where an invited guestlist will be given exclusive access to view the SHADOWMAN movie before being invited into the main gallery to view the collab items and artwork in the official gallery opening and launch party. Hosted by a lineup of local DJ’s, the gallery opening will be open to the public as well as the invited guests. This gallery opening party will signify the official opening of the gallery. Each of the invited special guest will recieve a gift bag containing all the content of the shoe collabor except the shoes themselves plus a bonus limited t-shirt all gifted in a limited edition bag. This process will be repeated in each of the selected city locations.
GALLERY EVENT TIMELINE Our aim is launch one pop-up gallery a month until all the selected cities have been completed. With a goal to open at least 2 pop-up galleries, being New York City and London with the possibility of Paris, Milan, Berlin and Tokyo. The possible opportunity for a UAE event with a new demand for Richards work coming from these CityStates.
