Whether its nightlife, restaurants, attractions or just interesting things about the city, we are here to give you guys an insight into this exciting world-class holiday destination. If you are from the United Kingdom or a snooker fan who is over 30-years old, the name ‘Jimmy White’ will conjure up magical memories and recollections from the 1980s and 1990s. Jimmy was one of the most flamboyant and naturallygifted snooker players to ever grace the game, and although he always fell short at the World Championships, even after playing in several finals, he never quite managed to capture the top prize, but he did capture people’s hearts. This month, Jimmy White will be appearing live and direct in Pattaya City at Bootleggers Pool Hall in Jomtien, which promises to be a great night. You can even get a game with Jimmy if you think you can take him on! This month sees our usual choice of highly recommended eateries and sports bars such as I-Rovers, Punch & Judy Pub, Legends Pool and Sports Hall, Blue Olive Restaurant and more. For the best nightlife options in Pattaya City, we have pulled out the stops to give you the best up-to-date info.

THINGS TO DO WITH YOUR KIDS ON HOLIDAY IN PATTAYA Over the past few years, Pattaya has been working hard to change its image. Historically known as a party city, Pattaya has been attracting a certain clientele for the past 30 years or more, but in recent times, the demographics have started to change. I personally know as a father of two young sons living in the Pattaya region that there are more things to do for families with kids than ever before, making the city now a great place for those seeking a family holiday. So, now you are in Pattaya with your kids, what is there to do that combines fun, excitement, and education? Surprisingly so, Pattaya is probably the best place in Thailand for purpose built-family attractions, and here are some of the best: Ramayana and Cartoon Network Water Parks Water parks are one of the areas that Pattaya easily leads the way in Thailand. Although we have had Pattaya Water Park at the foot of Pratumnak Hill for many years, in the past couple of years, we have seen the construction of two of the biggest water parks in Thailand. The Ramayana Water Park and the Amazone Cartoon Network Water park are both located a 20-minute derive outside Pattaya in the Bangsaray countryside and offer state-of-the-art waterslides that you would expect to see in the biggest and best water parks in America. Central Festival Shopping Center The Central Festival Shopping Mall on Pattaya Beach Road is a veritable paradise for kids… and mum and dad too! This boutique shopping center is home to the world’s leading clothing and electrical brands, and also to Toys R Us. With a multi-tiered SFX Cinema and 3D Max ride, alongside arcades and much more, a few hours at Central Festival offers something for all families with kids. Paintballs and BB Guns Paintballing and BB gun activities are a young boy’s wet dream. And if the truth be told, dad is also loving this activity, although he only goes along to take part ‘for the kids!’. Pattaya Paintball Club offers not only paintballing, but also BB gun fun and also football. What more could a male of the species, a boy or man-child want? The park is home to purpose-built paintball and BB gun courses with lots of adventure team games available. There is also a shop that sells BB gun products onsite. Pattaya Paintball Club is located in the heart of the city, on Pattaya 3rd Road. Underwater World Pattaya Although all family attractions in Pattaya revolve around fun, it’s even better when education is also involved. Underwater World Pattaya is simply the most popular family attraction in Pattaya, offering a purpose-built aquarium unrivaled in this part of Thailand. From sharks andstingrays, to amphibians and reptiles, all manner of aquatic and marine life are on show at Underwater World, making it the ultimate place to take your kids in Pattaya. KhaoKheow Open Zoo Visiting zoos can be a contentious decision. Some people believe that wild animals should not be held in captivity, and when they are it should be more of a safari park feel. So, when you want to take your kids to see wild animals up close and personal, we would recommend that you visit the KhaoKheow open Zoo, which is more of a safari park than a standard zoo. Here you can view some of the coolest animals in the world such as snakes, monkeys, elephants, insects and even the famous Bengal Tigers. The open zoo is approximately a 45-minute drive from Pattaya, but don’t let that get in the way of your family fun.

KANCHANABURI

DAY TRIP Exploring the Death Railway

W

hen we think about Thailand, we generally base our perspective on the nation being a land of sunshine, beaches, rich culture, Buddhism and amazing holiday destinations with 5-star hotels, top-notch hospitality and jaw-dropping nightlife. However, Thailand not only has a vast ancient history, but also colorful modern history as well. One of the most detailed accounts of modern history in Thailand on a world-scale revolves around the part Thailand played in WWII and the BurmaThailand Railway, which all ties into the Bridge Over the Rive Kwai legend. The area that was most impacted by WWII and the building of the railway was Kanchanaburi, which is nearly a 3-hour drive from Bangkok and a 4-hour drive from Pattaya. Here are some great suggestions for a Day-trip in Kanchanaburi to explore the history of the ‘death railway’. 10 am - Bridge Over the River Kwai Although it was probably a long drive from either Bangkok or Pattaya, but now you are here in Kanchanaburi, we would highly recommend you start at the start with the Bridge Over the River Kwai. With books and films inspired by the tragedy, this is the perfect place to starr. The Infamous ‘Death railway’ was built by prisoners in WWII under the supervision of the Japanese army between September 1942 and December 1943. It is believed that 16,000 prisoners of war from the United Kingdom, Australia, America and Holland, along with 90,000 laborers from Myanmar and Thailand died during the construction of the railway through both bombings and the cruelty of the Japanese army. The bridge is free to visit, and although the bridge now in place is not the original one, it is a place of great reflection.

12 Midday – Thailand-Burma Railway Center The Thailand Burma Railway Center is just a 15-minute drive from the bridge and is a poignant memorial and beautiful tribute to those who died building the WWII Burma-Thailand Railway. This interactive museum has lots of information and is a research facility dedicated to the history of the Thailand-Burma railway. The center is fully air-conditioned and offers an educational and moving experience where dry eyes are a rarity for visitors. 2 pm - Kanchanaburi War Cemetery Talking of moving experiences, nothing puts this travesty into perspective quite like visiting the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery. This allied war cemetery holds the graves of nearly 7,000 soldiers from the Commonwealth and Holland who died in the construction of ‘death railway’. A 30-minute stroll around the cemeterywill give you a stark reality on war, especially when you see how young some of the soldiers that died when constructing the railway. It really is an eye-opening and sobering experience. 4 pm - Hellfire Pass Memorial 80 km Northwest of Kanchanaburi, and you will find the Hellfire Pass Memorial, which is a museum that details a 4 km stretch of railway where shifts of 500 prisoners worked for 16 to 18 hours per day to construct the railway. Near the start of the trail, you will find the Hellfire Pass, which the locals call Konyu Cutting. The museum also has a free audio guide that will describe what you are seeing on the trail, which really helps to try and capture the almost incomprehensible conditions that the prisoners where working under.

Walking on Water

@ Pattaya Floating Market

If you want to experience a real slice of Thai life, visiting a local market will give you a fascinating insight into what makes the people tick. Indeed, markets in Thailand have long been not just a place to buy food, but also akin to a social gathering. Any man with a Thai girlfriend knows that it would take Richard Branson less time to circumnavigate the western world in a re-jigged weather balloon than it does for a Thai person to go to market and get back home. Every region of Thailand has its own special local delicacies, greatly differing from village to village, town to town, city to city. Wouldn’t it be great if all markets from every region in Thailand were all under one roof so you could see them all in one visit? Well, guess what? The Pattaya Floating Market is one such venue that combines the essence of market life from every region of the nation. Floating markets have a long history in Thailand. In older times, when canals

and rivers were the primary modes of transportation, Thai cities and villages of all sizes would house floating markets, as travelling and local merchants would offer their wares from boats, paddling up to people on the water’s edge and selling food and goods. At Pattaya Floating Market, this tradition is still very much alive and well. The market includes aspects and cultural tidbits from the four main regions of Thailand: the central plains, the south, the northeast (Isaan), and the north. These four regions are all very much distinct from one another, blending together to form what is today the Thai nation. Historically, these areas have experienced a wide variety of influences and changes that have made a great impact on their culture and daily life. For example, the southern provinces have more Muslim and Malay influences, and their proximity to water makes seafood a larger part of the cuisine. This is in contrast to the Isaan region of the northeast, which has seen more Chinese, Vietnamese and especially Lao influence that can be seen in the area’s food, culture and even the appearance of the people. The northern and central regions are distinct in their own way as well, and the Pattaya Floating Market is able to capture some of these distinctions that make Thailand so unique. Pattaya itself is considered part of the central region, and this is the culture that is dominant in the area. The market offers not only food but also a wide variety of handicrafts and cultural items, in addition to the sort of clothes and souvenirs that can be found at any local market in the region. There are frequent buses to the floating market or visitors can take a taxi or tuk-tuk. A favorite activity of many visitors is to rent a boat and cruise around the market, taking in the sights and sounds and smells of this unique cultural institution. The boats are called ‘longtail boats’, and will have a large motor turning a propeller on a long pole, which the driver will use to steer. They can be a bit loud but are ubiquitous along Thailand’s waterways and riding one is something of a cultural experience in and of itself. For those feeling a little less adventurous, there are also more comfortable options for seeing the market at water level or one could always walk around and take in the market on dry land.

The Best Guide

T

by Lonely Planet

here are valid reasons why we put so much trust in travel websites and publications such as TripAdvisor and the Lonely Planet Guide, and this is because they are pretty mush spot on with their information and analysis. The Lonely Planet Guide was around long before we used the internet to do our travel research, and we have to say as expat residents in Pattaya, their choice of the best places of interest in and around the city really are spot on. If you are currently on holiday in Pattaya and want to find the best things to see and do, the below recommendations are from Lonely Planet, and they really do come up with the goods. Best Monument in Pattaya – Sanctuary of Truth You can tell a lot about a country on how they construct their most treasured monuments, and nowhere in Pattaya city can match the Sanctuary of Truth in regard to age-old construction values and aesthetics. The Sanctuary of Truth is a gigantic wooden temple/construction which covers the area of more than two rais. At approximately 105 meters in height, it was constructed to withstand the wind and sunshine on the seashore. The building was constructed in accordance to ancient Thai design ingenuities with a vast plethora of wooden sculptures and art that reflect an ancient vision of Earth, ancient knowledge, and eastern philosophy. The temple really is a joy to behold, especially in its beachfront location in Naklua at North Pattaya. Best Market in Pattaya – Thepprasit Weekend Market Taking place on Friday and Saturday evenings from approximately 5pm, the Thepprasit Road Weekend Market is the ultimate place to shop for bargains whether you are a local Thai or Westerner.

The onsite food market alone is pretty spectacular, but when you take into account that the market is also a great place to buy amazing value for money clothes and fashion accessories, electronics, local handicrafts and virtually anything you can think of, this market is simply the best in Pattaya for both Pattaya City Uncovered and Lonely Planet. Best Museum in Pattaya - AnekKusalaSala (ViharnSien) Located in the Bangsaray countryside, under a 30-minute drive south from Pattaya, AnekKusalaSala, also more commonly known as ViharnSien, is not just the best museum in the region, but is also located in a spectacular old-style Chinese temple that is simply breathtaking. With a vast choice of ancient Asian artefacts and even a scaled down version of the famous Terracotta Army, the museum delves into the beauty and history of SE-Asia. Best Art Gallery in Pattaya – Art in Paradise Pattaya might not be known as the epicenter of arts in Thailand, but we do have some excellent Pattaya art galleries, with the best hands-down being Art in Paradise. Predominantly known as a 3D museum, all the art that aligns the walls seems to jump out and offer an amazing visual effect. Art in Paradise is open every day, and when you want to experience a unique art gallery with phenomenal photo opportunities, this is the best art gallery in the Pattaya region.

myriad of pastaspecialties and a total dining experience. La Costa sits in the perfect location on Pattaya Beach Road at the Empress Hotel on Soi 12, with an airconditioned dining area and a beautiful terrace when you can sit, sample one of the restaurant’s sublime Italian coffees in the daytime or evening and enjoy the sea-views while absorbing the exciting hustle and bustle that is Pattaya Beach Road. With a keen attention to detail in regards to not only the food preparation, taste and presentation, the dining area is also very modern, comfortable and welcoming, making it a great place for all nationalities and all manner people and has a true international atmosphere.

One of the main features of L’Italiano was their awesome Italian-style pizzas, which were not only delicious, but also authentic. La Costa will have the same pizzeria menu, so make sure you try one of those out.

One of the main stumbling blocks for restaurants in Pattaya is getting quality service, but at La Costa, the staff are attentive, knowledgeable and friendly, helping to create a memorable experience.

The restaurant is open 11am to 11pm, but if there are still customers, they will stay open until everyone is served. They also offer the ‘Door to Door’ delivery service for those of you who want to eat La Costa’s stunning food in the comfort of your own home or hotel.

Good, Honest and Quality Сuisine @

T

he Pattaya dining scene really is one of the jewels in the city’s crown, with lots of choices and eateries serving cuisine from the four corners of the globe. Quantity doesn’t always equate to quality though! When you want top-notch international cuisine, imported steaks and delicious dishes, the New Nordic Steaks, Grill & Winery not only serves stunning international food in a warm and inviting setting, but also offers jaw-dropping value for money, which really is unbeatable. The New Nordic Development is widely known as one of the best residential/holiday resorts in Pattaya, situated in the heart of Soi 4 on Pratumnak Hill and famous for their vast apartment developments that have an authentic Scandinavian theme, merging apartment developments, several swimming pools, bars, cafés and the total living

and/or holiday experience. The most famous and popular restaurant in the development, and also one of the best in Pattaya, is their New Nordic Steaks, Grill & Winery. Affordable Yet Quality Pattaya Dining Over the past couple of months, New Nordic Steaks, Grill & Winery have appointed a new international head-chef, Joel Turner, with over 20-years in the industry, who is currently tweaking the already-existing menu with 70% new dishes and diversifying the food choices at New Nordic. There are a few misgivings sometimes when talking about New Nordic Steaks, Grill & Winery, as many people assume the restaurant is a high-end fine dining establishment, and although

the food does hit those high-levels of excellence, the eatery is not a fine-dining restaurant in terms of pricing or pretention. This is a very family-friendly restaurant that offers good, honest and quality food for a fair price that anyone can afford. Serving all manner of modern dishes, skillfully created and beautifully presented with a keen attention to detail, whether you are looking for imported steaks from New Zealand, Australia and Argentina, stunning smoked salmon dishes, breathtaking barramundi, chorizo and prosciutto dishes, a stunning braised lamb shank, pasta dishes and much more, this is the place to be. As the New Nordic Developments have a Scandinavian theme and clientele, the menu still has some great Swedish and Norwegian dishes such as the delicious Planked Steak, Swedish Meatballs and much more for amazing value.

If you fancy a pizza, their delicious pizza menu offers affordable choices, and you can even call the restaurant directly to order for takeaway, although they do not deliver. Joel has been working extremely hard over the past few weeks to reduce the prices at New Nordic Steak, Grill & Winery, and with lots of options from 250 to 500 THB, alongside stunning imported steaks with prices at an amazing 550 THB. In the coming weeks, there will be some new and interesting steaks on a blackboard promotion, alongside other blackboard specialties such as daily specials, Anti pasto platters, frittatas, arancini, Spanish omelets, braised meats, andother cuisine styles such as Indian and Mexican. As we mentioned above, it is important to emphasize that new Nordic Steaks, Grill & Winery IS NOT A FINEDINING RESTAURANT, but does have high standards in terms of taste, flavors and quality, while being very affordable for families and large groups of friends. When you need a quality meal this month in Pattaya with guaranteed quality for a price that’s right, situated in a modern eatery with both indoor and outdoor dining options by the pool and impeccable service, the New Nordic Steaks, Grill & Winery is the perfect choice, taking it to the next level to create a memorable and honest dining experience you can count on to deliver.

How much should I budget per day for a holiday in

?

Pattaya

I

t depends a lot on what type of traveler you are and how much travelling/ partying you plan to do. So the following will give you an idea on what you are going to need to prepare for and how much you may need. Accommodation With a couple of exceptions should be able to get a basic fancooled room for under 300 baht. If you want air-con then you’re looking to spend somewhere in the 500-1,000B range. Facilities like swimming pools, business center’s and location will again push the price upwards. Take a look through the various accommodation sections on Travel fish to get an idea of what standard of accommodation works for you.

day. The cheaper restaurants like noodle stands will give you water for free but the nicer the restaurant, the more it will cost you. Alcohol

Booze is generally much cheaper compared to what you’d pay back home. A large bottle of beer can cost around 50B (and you get what you pay for), a bottle of cheap gin or vodka around 600B. If you’ve having a couple of big beers every night with dinner, this will add up quickly. Note in clubs and Walking Street this can be much higher. Stick to the Go Go’s and order drought beer if you’re looking to get more bang for your baht. Transport

Food If you’re eating on the street, three meals a day, then 100150B per day is adequate. If you’re eating three staple meals in a backpacker style restaurant, you’ll be spending more like 250-400B a day. If you’re eating dinner at proper restaurants, then you could easily be spending 300B or more a meal. Example the price of subway is approx. 200B. Water Thailand is hot and you’ll need to be drinking a lot of water. At least two to three liters of water a day — that will cost around 40-60B a

38

PattayaCityUncovered.com

Buses, trains and low cost flights are all very affordable. There is no real guideline in this regard as it depends entirely on how far and frequently you are travelling. Generally around town you can jump on a baht bus for 10B. Motor bike taxis vary and will take you most places around the city for under 100B. Hope this helps. This may not be entirely accurate as prices do vary. Good Luck!

DEALING WITH DEBTS

By: Magna Carta Law Office

D

ebt is an amount of money borrowed by one party from another with an arrangement that gives the borrower permission to borrow money subject to contractual terms regarding the amount and timing of repayments of principal and interest. It should be taken with a clear intention of paying it back. Debtors are legally responsible for paying the debts they legitimately owe. You cannot be sent to jail, or even be arrested for owing a debt, regardless of the amount involved. However, you could face court action over unpaid debts. To collect an unsecured debt, the general rule is that most creditors must first file alawsuit against the debtor and win the court judgment. A creditor has no right to forcibly enter into the property of the debtor to take control or to seize anything as a repayment of the debt owed. A loan of money for a sum exceeding two thousand baht in capital is not enforceable by action unless there is a written evidence of the loan signed by the borrower. No repayment of a loan of money evidenced by writing may be proved unless there is written evidence signed by the lender, or the document evidencing the loan has been surrendered to the borrower or has been cancelled. INTEREST Interest shall not exceed 15% per year; when a higher rate of interest is fixed by the contract, it shall be reduced to 15% per year. Interest shall not bear interest. The parties to a loan of money may, however, agree that the interest due for not less than one year shall be added to the capital, and that the whole shall bear interest. Any such agreement must be made in writing and signed by both parties. If it is agreed in a contract that interest is payable, but no rate is specified, the court will order, as prescribe the law that the parties agree to the rate of 7.5% per year. DEBT AND MARRIAGE Many couples who enter into a marriage already have their existing personal debts. Usually a debt acquired before marriage, do not automatically become joint liability for a couple after marriage. If your fiancĂŠe is personally liable for a debt incurred before or during your marriage, it shall first be settled out of her personal assets; however, if her personal

assets are not sufficient to settle the debt in full, it shall be satisfied out of her portion of your joint assets. GUARANTOR A guarantor is a person or entity that agrees to be responsible for another’s debt or performance under a contract, if the other fails to pay or perform. As soon as the debtor is in default, the creditor is entitled to demand settlement from the guarantor by sending a letter of notice to the guarantor within 60 days commencing from the date of default. A creditor cannot request a guarantor to settle the debts of the debtor unless the notice has been duly received. When the creditor demands settlement of the debt from the guarantor, the guarantor may require that the debtor be first called upon to settle unless the debtor has been adjudged bankrupt, or his whereabouts in Thailand is unknown. If the guarantor can prove that the debtor has the means to perform and that execution would not be difficult, the creditor must first make execution against the property of the debtor. Creditors may claim repayment of the loan against the guarantor only within 1 year after the death of the borrower.

“ The way to get started

is to quit talking and begin doing ” (Walt Disney)

S

o we enter the month of May, many of us will be on holiday today by virtue of International Workers Day or Labour Day / May Day as it is often referred to. So this also means another month has passed. Despite what seems like troubled geopolitical times concerning Syria, North Korea etc, once again the numbers were ok. The FTSE had a bit of stumble, the increase in sterling value being a factor here given the amount of foreign exchange revenues these companies earn. But all major markets remain up for 2017. Regardless of what despots such as Assad and Un are up to people are still spending. Take Amazon their sales were up 23% on the previous quarter. So the raw data:

Dow J Nasdaq FTSE Dax Nikkei SSE

April +1.3% +2.5% -2.3% +1.9% +0.7% -1.7%

YTD +6.0% +12.3% +0.9% +8.3% +0.4% +1.6%

On the currencies, most noticeable was a strong month for the GBP, with the confidence in the Brexit strategy and the calling of a general election. Euro also gained some momentum on the markets liking the fact Macron is firm favourite (though we all know this hasn’t meant a great deal of late). Some of the Aussie Dollar gains this year were also given back in April...

GBP EUR JPY CNY AUD

April -4.1% -1.2% +0.3% +0.1% +2.4%

YTD -4.9% -3.5% -4.9% -0.7% -4.0%

So we seem to still be spending money and the growth story continues. A reason why we are spending is because employment levels are at some of their highest in decades. Take three large economies, the US currently has unemployment at 4.5%, an almost 10 year low. 42

PattayaCityUncovered.com

Compare this to an average over the last 60 years of 5.8%. Germany currently has its lowest rate of unemployment since 1980 at just 3.9%, again when looking at an average over the last sixty years of 5.6%, things appear to be in good shape despite what you may hear about refugee crisis’ etc.etc. Those of you who know me also know I am very bullish on India. Again their unemployment rate hit an all time low recently, just 3.4%. Whilst we do not have the luxury of a sixty year track record, their records began in 1983 and during that time averaged 9%. Things are looking up for the world’s largest democracy. Good leadership and although of course having a developed infrastructure takes time I believe the Indians will get there and at least some of your emerging market exposure should be there. Whilst these statistics can only be an indicator (what is they say 90% of statistics are made up...!) this is the data that is out there. Interestingly enough in my region in South East Asia, again an area I believe has potential, three countries, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand are in the top five for lowest unemployment rates according to the ILO (International Labour Organisation). People working creates growth, the numbers look good so don’t miss out on these upward trends. 3 things

YOU MUST DO on your first Thailand Holiday #1 #2 #3

I

will try almost anything once, within reason! Sometimes you only get one chance to do something in life, and through my experience, it’s best you take that opportunity just in case you don’t get another chance. That’s what I always say! A holiday in Thailand might be your first and only visit, so there are a few things you need to try when you are here, just to say you did it!

#1 – Ride an elephant This might be the obvious choice, but I am sure, especially if you are from Northern Europe, that you have never had an opportunity to ride the living hell out of an elephant… a Double Decker bus maybe, but not an elephant. In all Thailand’s major tourist beachside destinations, elephant trekking companies are aplenty. There is nothing more beautiful than making a connection with these phenomenal animals as you hang on as you trailblazer through some luscious jungle terrain. #2 – Visit a Go-Go Bar I know that this is not everyone’s cup of tea, but when in Rome… At some point of your Thailand holiday, especially if you are in Bangkok, Pattaya or Phuket, take the wife to a go-go dancing bar, she’ll thank you for the rest of your life… or divorce you! Only joking guys, but everyone should take a look at least once in their lives. #3 – Eat Fried Locusts and Cockroaches Again, this might not be the most appetizing of local delicacies, but in all honesty, they are no different from a bag of salted peanuts, well, in this part of the world anyway. No doubt that at some point of your holiday you will encounter a street vendor frying up a gutwrenching selection of insects and grubs just for you to consume. Don’t worry, get stuck in there, they don’t taste that bad! And how do you know if you like them or not if you don’t try?
