hen you are seeking the best family attraction in the Pattaya region, not many can live up to the high standards of Underwater World Pattaya. The aquarium is perfect for people of all ages, but especially those with children. Not only do they have a great selection of marine life, but also many other creatures on show.

Come along to Underwater World Pattaya to experience their famous 105-meter long underwater tank, which is home

to some exotic marine life that you can almost reach out and touch. You can also swim with the sharks and other creates in their own habitat and have an experience that will last a lifetime.

Underwater World Focus: Iguanas & Birds Although Underwater World is famous for its stingrays, sharks, starfishes and other aquatic attractions, they also have a great choice of reptiles and birds. Their reptile zone offers the perfect chance to see these scaly creatures up, close and personal.

The star of the Reptile Zone is undoubtedly the Iguana.

These majestic and omnivorous lizards are a native of regions such as South and Central America and the Caribbean. Iguanas can range from 1.5 to 1.8 meters in length and truly stunning creatures. Make sure you come along to Underwater World this month to check out not only the iguanas but all the other reptiles on show.

Underwater World also has a new bird zone with purpose-built cages that showcase a cool variety of birds. Come to check out the colorful and friendly parakeets. The kids will have a fantastic time.

CHILD ABANDONMENT

hild abandonment occurs when a child is knowingly or secretly left behind by his or her parent or guardian, without any regard for the child’s physical health, safety or well-being and with the intention of completely abandoning the child to willingly renounce parental responsibility.

According to the Child Protection Act B.E. 2546 (2003), guardians of a child are forbidden to act as follows: 1. Abandon a child at a nursery or health care facility, or with a person employed to look after the child, or at a public place or any other place, with the intention of not taking him or her back; 2. Neglect a child at any place without arranging for appropriate safety protection or care; 3. Deliberately or neglectfully withhold from a child things that are necessary for sustaining the child’s life or health, to an extent which seems likely to cause physical or mental harm to the child; 4. Treat a child in ways or manners which hinder his or her growth or development; 5. Treat a child in ways or manners which constitute unlawful caring.

CAUSES OF CHILD ABANDONMENT Some of the primary causes of child abandonment include: • unwanted or unplanned pregnancy • poverty • poor parenting skills • depression • mental and physical illness of either the child or parents • drug or alcohol abuse • lack of education • lack of cultural values • the child having disability PENALTY FOR CHILD ABANDONMENT Child Abandonment is a criminal offense. Whoever abandons a child not over nine years of age in any

place, with intent to completely abandon such child in a manner so that such child shall be without a person to take care of, shall be punished with imprisonment not exceeding three years or fined not exceeding Six Thousand Baht, or both.

If a child dies as a result of abandonment, the offender may face reckless abandonment charges and shall be punished with imprisonment of three to fifteen years.

If a child suffered grievous bodily harmas a result of abandonment,the offendershall be punished with imprisonment of six months to ten years.

Grievous bodily harms are as follows: • Deprivation of the sight, deprivation of the hearing, cutting of the tongue or loss of the sense of smelling; • Loss of genital organs or reproductive ability; • Loss of an arm, leg, hand, foot, finger or any other organ; • Permanent disfiguration of face; • Permanent insanity; • Infirmity or chronic illness which may last throughout life; HELPING AN ABANDONED CHILD 1. If the child is wounded or injured, the child should be taken to the hospital immediately to get proper treatment.

2. Report the incident to the nearest Police Station.

Police Officerswill investigate andtrack down the parents or any relative of the child and attempt to contact them.

3. Contact the organization Group Homes for Children and Family in ChonburiProvince at 038-240-220 / 038240-135, or thru their hotline 1300. This organization is governed by the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, which has the main duty to protectchildren’s rights and welfare.The abandoned child/children are thentaken to the center, to check theirhealth,to test their Intelligence Quotient (I.Q.), and to examine their mental status and behavior.After the assessment, the abandoned child/children will then be transferred toother organizations which are suitable for them.

Most expensive pet wedding Do you ever remember watching Paris Hilton carry around that little dog in her pocket and thought she was taking pet-love to new levels of embarrassment? What an idiot, right!

Thailand holds the record for the most expensive pet wedding in the world, and this was way back in 1996 and still hasn’t been surpassed today, largely due to the fact you don’t find many pet lovers with this kind of stupidity in the world. Phet and Phoy were two cats, but not just normal cats. They had a type of glaucoma that gave their eyes a diamond appearance, which is considered lucky in Thailand.

Their owners lavished a wedding ceremony to wed the cats that came to an earth-shattering 400,000 THB with over 500 guests. 15 million baht’s worth of presents were given to the cats, alongside a dowry that tipped the scales at 550,000 THB. The bride was brought a Rolls Royce and the groom a helicopter. If that wasn’t already mind-bending enough, a parrot was best man and an iguana was maid of honor. That’s pure pet decadence right there.

The World’s tallest girl Aren’t those Thais small and petite little creatures? That’s the impression we have anyway. However, in the most stunning sense of irony, at one time in the not-too-distant past, the tallest woman in the world was from Thailand. 17-year-old Malee Duangdee was the tallest girl in the world, scaling in at an impressive 6 ft 10 inches, which would even make The Undertaker think twice. A few short years later, Malee was upstaged

by a 16-year-old from America, named Marvadenne Anderson, who is now the tallest at 6 ft 11 inches.

Most Veterinary Surgeons in a Single Operation How many Thai vets does it take to fix an elephant? I suppose the answer relies on what is broken on the elephant in the first place.

Well, the answer is 30 vets.

Once upon a time, a lovely elephant named Motola was taking her morning graze in the jungles of Lampang when she stepped on a land mine and blew part of her leg off.

30 vets worked in tandem to operate on the 38-yearold Motola in the Hang Chat Elephant Hospital in August 1999. God knows why you would need 30 vets for one operation, but I am no expert on such matters.

Incidentally, Motola was given enough anesthetic to knock out 70 people. Motola was fitted with an artificial leg and went on to survive the accident and operation. Too many cooks spoil the broth?
