Moray Eels in September

T

here are not so many attractions in Pattaya City that offer both a funpacked time and also an educational experience. One such establishment is routinely placed at the top of the list when it comes to must-see

Experience 6 Species of Moray Eels in September From the start of September, Underwater World Pattaya is proud to inform you that there will be 6 new species of moray eels, which will total at 15 eels in their tank. The moray eel is a large species of eel found in warm and temperate waters all around the world. Despite their snake-like appearance, moray eels (along with other eel species) are in fact fish and not reptiles.

Moray eels are found in both deep and shallow waters in tropical and sub-tropical regions.

Although moray eels can be found in cooler waters occasionally, they tend to remain in the crevices deep in the ocean rather than venturing

into shore. The largest populations of moray eels are found around tropical coral reefs where there are numerous different marine species found in large numbers. Make sure you come along to Underwater World Pattaya in September to view these beautiful creatures up close and personal.

The journey and discovery of the stunning marine life at Underwater World Pattaya starts at the shallow ‘Touch Pool’, allowing you to view and interact with the underwater life such as sharks, stingrays, turtles, starfishes, and many species of fishes. The tunnel is separated into 3 zones, with the ‘Reef Zone’, the ‘Sharks and Rays’ and the ‘Shipwrecks Zone’, giving you a vast perspective of awe-inspiring marine life.

aem Chabang International is based only a 30-minute drive away and a little North East of Pattaya. It is well worth the excursion as the course is considered one of the most delightful in Pattaya if not the entire Kingdom of Thailand.

The course has the distinction of being designed by international golfing icon and world famous course designer Jack Nicklaus. Widely regarded as the world’s leading golf course architects, the firm has acquired an enviable reputation for creating courses that are enjoyable for players, enhancing the natural environment and challenging to every type of player from beginner to experienced. Laem Chabang is sandwiched between two exquisite lakes on either side of the course. It is a 27-hole course and is situated on over 700 acres of the prettiest land south of Bangkok. The general theme of the immediate landscape is land, mountain and valley. Each of the 9-holes is named after these environmental leitmotifs and reflects the unique features of the immediate environment, though each hole has been crafted to offer a different experience and challenge to the player. Players at Laem Chabang are most often heard to be praising the intimacy of the natural and beautiful tropical environment. The lush rolling hills, verdant foliage and pretty skies lend an atmosphere of close to nature golfing, appreciated by those who like to reflect on the beauty of nature while playing challenging games. The opening 9-holes called The Mountain is just under 3500 yards, followed by The Lake which is closer to 3400 yards, followed by The Valley which is a whopping 3600 yards. All the 9 holes have been carefully crafted to challenge the player from reaching the greens too easily. There is extensive use of sand traps and bunkers along with water hazards such as lakes, creeks and ponds and craggy rock formations, interspersed with coconut trees and tropical bushes. Each hole has a dedicated floral emphasis through the use of distinct flowers, trees and shrubs that is indicated on each tee with a sign nearby. All three 9-holes are immaculately maintained as has been noted by the course designer Jack Nicklaus. Keeping the standard high is important to the management and regular players at Lam Chabang. The overall scenic nature of the course, coupled with the high standards of tidy and pretty aesthetics, fuses together to provide one of the best golfing days out in the region.

Mythical Creatures in Thailand Who doesn’t love a bit of dragon and sea monster talk? Those who have visited Thailand many times or live here will inform you that Thai people are ubersuperstitious and wholeheartedly believe in the spirit realm and put much credence into the numerous mythical creates that are a massive part of Thai culture, history and legends. When it comes to mythical creatures, Thailand has some of the most fascinating tall tales in the world, so sit back, don your proverbial conspiracytheory tin-hat and enjoy the tales and traditions of Thailand.

5-Headed Naga Serpent The 5-headed serpent known as the ‘Naga’ is one of the most legendary creatures in Thai mythology, known as a protector of Buddha and a guardian against bad/evil spirits. You will find depictions of this creature in many temples, often used to flank the walls of temples and especially staircases. You will see them in forms carved into roofs, doors and windows.

One of the interesting things about the Naga, is that many cultures across Asia believed that Naga-like beings were the first Royal families across the continent, which will fuel the believes of those who buy into conspiracy-king David Icke’s notion that royal families across the world are shape-shifting reptilian lizard gods. That would explain a few things actually!

The Kinnari The Kinnari appears in the form of a halfwoman and half-bird. You will find some of these mythological figurines in small coves on the second level of the central prang at Wat Arun located beside the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok. The Kinnari symbolizes beauty, grace, cultural accomplishment in singing and dancing and can be seen in many mural designs for Asianstyle properties and more exclusively in temples throughout Thailand.

The Garuda A large mythical bird-like creature, the Garuda appears in not just Thai and Buddhist culture, but also in Hindu myths and legends. Its shape takes the form of a half-man and half-bird, as some kind of hybrid creature. The Gurada’s origins were told in the ancient Indian epic, the Mahabharata, and can be seen as ferocious figureheads on the gun barge at the Royal Barge Museum in Bangkok and also across many temple complexes in both Thailand and India.

The Singha This is a mythical Thai creature that you might already relate to, as it represents the logo for the alcoholic beverage that many people enjoy to consume – Singha beer. The SIngha takes on the appearance of a lion-like figure whose main job in life is to protect and guard the entrance of temples across the Kingdom. Large ones grace the entrances, while the smaller ones sit on gateposts.

Figuratively, it is the symbol of power, strength, courage, leadership, dignity, loyalty, perseverance and endurance. In fact, it is part of Thai people’s everyday life. The Singha can come in many forms, both as pure breeds as well as half breeds, living in the Himmapan Forest, a place from the Thai-Indian Folklore, supposedly situated at the foot of the Himalayas.

e all know about Pattaya’s infamous past. Indeed, the city has one of the most colorful stories regarding its development over the past 30 years or more. However, we

don’t need to be defined by our past. It’s what we do now that really matters, while learning from the past, that creates our future, whether that is just you as a person or an entire city or culture. Pattaya might have a somewhat tainted history, but we have seen a change in attitudes over the past 5 years that show us that Pattaya is moving in the right direction with a bright and rosy future.

Pattaya for Families I know this can be a contentious opinion, but over the past few years, Pattaya has made massive leaps and bounds to attract more families to the city, and that will definitely shape Pattaya as we move forward.

Within 10 years, I believe we will see a more balanced environment in the city with more families holidaying in Pattaya than ever before. Some expats are clinging to the hope that Pattaya remains a ‘Disney Land for adults’, but times and attitudes are changing, so you either align yourself with the changes or find somewhere else to live or holiday.

No more Soi 6?

No doubt you have heard the stories that popular sex trade haven’s such as Soi 6 are going to be demolished and replaced with something more family friendly, so we can expect to see a downsize of the city’s sex trade over the next 5 years, which will be bad for some, but great for the city as a whole moving forward.

International Infrastructure When you think about it, Pattaya already offers an international-style environment for its guests and residents with world-class shopping malls, hotels,

DASTA (Designated Area for Sustainable Tourism Administration) is allying with local civic authorities to push for new approaches including the natural environment, developing new destinations and upgrading existing facilities to international standards.

New tourism sites are already being planned for the Lake Mabprachan area and Khao Chi Chan, while transforming Koh Larn, Na Jomtien and Nong Palai into ecologically sound venues that will give the region a new sustainable ‘green’ image.

edical Malpractice refers to the negligence of professional duty by a health care provider in which the treatment provided to a patient falls below the recognized standard of

medical practice which results in damage, injury, or death. According to the Thailand Civil and Commercial Code, a person who, negligently or unlawfully injures the life, body or health of another person, is said to commit a wrongful act and is bound to make compensation, therefore.

Medical Malpractice Claim is a demand for compensation that is filed against the health care provider who failed to meet the standards of medical practice wherein his negligent actions resulted in damages to the patient. According to the Consumer Case Procedure Act 2551 and Consumer Protection Act, any person who has been treated by medical services, whether from a government hospital or a private hospital, is defined as the consumer. Thus, if damages from Medical Malpractice occurred from such medical services, a Consumer Case can be filed with the court. In such cases, the claimant can gain benefits with faster court procedure and without court fee.

According to the Thailand Civil and Commercial Code, a claim for damages arising from a wrongful act must be filed within one year from the day when the wrongful act and the person bound to make compensation became known to the injured person, or ten years from the day when the wrongful act was committed. However, if the damages are claimed on account of an act punishable under the criminal law for which a longer prescription is provided, such longer prescription shall apply.

Understanding Why Thai People Love King Rama V

I

f you have spent a considerable amount of time in Thailand, you will no doubt have heard the immortal words, “King Number 5”.

Phra Bat Somdet Phra Poramintharamaha Chulalongkorn Phra Chunla Chom Klao Chao Yu Hua, thankfully otherwise known as Rama V or Chulalongkorn, was Thailand’s fifth king during the monarch of Siam under the House of Chakri. His status in Thailand is legendary, and rightfully so.

Known for abolishing slavery, fending off the colonial masters of France and Great Britain, and showing a personal touch and love for the Thai people unrivalled in modern times, Rama V was simply an astonishing human being. His reign as the King of Siam (Thailand) began on 1 October 1868 until the day of his death on 23 October 1910. During his 42 year tenure, he shaped the ideals of Thailand that we come to know and love today.

What separated Rama V from previous Thai kings is that he visited other nations to learn from them.

Craving reforms, the King visited Singapore and British India during 1870-1872 to gain valuable insight from the British colonies, which he later used to modernize Thailand.

One of his main early contributions was to establish the Auditory Office, which was set up so that only one source would collect the people’s taxes, because the current system was widely used by corrupt rogues who pilfered the taxes to line their own coffers.

It is a well known fact in Southeast Asia that Thailand was the only nation to escape the colonization trend sweeping through the subcontinent during those times. Rumor has it that Rama V struck deals with the colonizers to protect the sovereignty and independence of Siam.

Although nowadays it is a given that the King of Thailand’s children are sent to Europe to study, Rama V was the first to ensure his heirs would benefit from the liberal and democratic ideals that were sweeping across Europe at the time.

Perhaps his greatest achievement above all was abolishing slavery. Around 1867, almost a third of the Siamese population was registered as slaves, which is an alarming statistic in itself.

During 1905, the Slave Abolition Act was first enacted on behalf of Rama V. The slaves were then allowed freedom and became merchants or farmers.

There are many great stories regarding Rama V’s life, and probably none more inspiring than the love he had for and from the Thai people.

It has been said the King would don ‘peasant’ clothing and walk the land visiting the ‘real’ people of Thailand incognito. During his travels, he would interact and converse with the poor – who had no idea who they were talking to – and find out what they really wanted.

King Rama V passed away on 23 October 1910, due to kidney problems. However, his death only proved to cement his legacy in the eyes of everyday Thai people for which he is still revered and celebrated today.
