1. Thailand’s national language is called Thai, which many scholars believe is a form of Chinese that was gradually brought to the area between the 7th and 13th centuries. Like Lao, Vietnamese, and Chinese, Thai is a very tonal language. Its alphabet has 32 vowels and 44 consonants.

2. Bangkok was once called the “Venice of the East” because its original buildings stood on stilts above the Chao Phraya River. However, as Bangkok grew larger, most canals were filled and paved.

3. One-tenth of all animal species on Earth live in Thailand.

4. Prostitution is technically illegal in Thailand, but the law is very rarely enforced. Estimates of the number of sex workers vary from 30,000 to more than 1 million.

5. Thailand is home to what may be the world’s longest snake, the reticulated python. The largest one ever found stretched over 33 feet (10 m) from end to end.

6. Thailand is home to the world’s longest poisonous snake, the king cobra. The cobra can reach more than 18 feet long, and one bite from it can kill an elephant.

7. World-famous golfer Tiger Woods is the son of an American father and a Thai mother.

8. Each year, around six million foreign tourists visit Thailand.

9. In Thailand, the head is the most important part of the body.

On our website, we do monthly polls to cut through all the nonsense and to find out the real facts of the matter. The three main local beers you will find in most bars and all shops in Thailand are, Singha Beer, Chang and Leo. For sure you can find Heineken, San Miguel and a cacophony of other imported alcoholic beverages, but when in Rome….

The beer aficionados in Thailand have spoken, and the winner is… wait for it… I said wait for it (drum roll) … Chang Beer! Although at one time in the

not too distant past, Chang beer was seen as the most inconsistent beer of them all, times have changed, and it now sits in its lofty position atop the Thai beer tree. That’s right folks, beer grows on trees, just like the farang husband’s life savings!

At one time, you could drink 2 Chang beers and feel drunk, but other times it could take ten, so was the inconsistency of the alcohol content percentage. But ever since Chang became a world brand, they have cleaned up their act and levelled out the percentage, although that was once the great surprise factor of buying Chang in the first place.

Chang leads the way in the poll with a massive 39%, with Singha in second at 30%. Leo Beer is seen more as a local beer drunk by Thais and local expats, and can’t even be found in some bars, which is probably why it comes in third on the list with 23%. I know, I know, my maths must be wrong. The remaining 8% voted for ‘Other’, so take that in any way you wish.

Child Custody and Child Support in Thailand

he parent who shall have the primary child custody after divorce can be decided either by the parents or by the Court. If the parents are able to negotiate or make an agreement without the court’s decision, they can keep better control over present and future decisions to be made in behalf of the child. Both parents may discuss about the child’s living situation, visitation rights, daily financial responsibility, educational plans and other important needs of the child.

For couples going through an uncontested divorce in Thailand, an agreement can be created to specify how the custody will be shared between parents. For unmarried couples, the mother shall have the sole custody of the child unless the father will register the legitimation of the child at the local district office. This procedure of legitimizing the child as your own is necessary before a father can enter into a custody agreement with the mother.

Child Support is usually made by a noncustodial divorced parent as a legal obligation to support to the financial care and costs of raising his or her minor child or children. Child support can be settled by a court order or by a written agreement between parents, setting out the amount of child support to be paid to help with the financial costs of raising their child/children after separation. It can include provisions regarding the method of payment of child support to cover the child’s expenses such as food, shelter, clothing, education, health costs and other extra-curricular costs for the benefit of the child.

Support shall be provided by periodical payments unless the parties agree to settle in other manners. The amount of child support and up to what extent the amount would be granted shall be according to the decision of the Court, considering the ability of the noncustodial divorced parent bound to provide the support, the condition in life of the child and the circumstances of the case.

If there has been a change in circumstances or in the means or condition in life of the parties, they may request as follows: 1. In the case of mutual consent of divorce, both parties can request to amend the contribution attached to Divorce Certificate at the District Office.

2. In case of divorce by judgment of the court, the court may make alterations on the support by cancelling, reducing, increasing or re-establishing the amount of support when any interested person can show that there has been a change in circumstances or in the means or condition in life of the parties,

them until they are capable of earning their own living.

Therefore, in case the custodial parent denies visitation rights to the non-custodial parent, such excuse cannot be used for denying support for their child/children.

In Thailand, a child born out of wedlock is deemed to be the legitimate child of the birth mother. The biological father is not considered as the legitimate father and shall have no legal rights over the child, and he is not bound by law to pay child support unless he acknowledges that he is the father through child legitimation process.

According to the Civil and Commercial Code, a father’s rights to a child can be legitimized: - if there is a subsequent marriage between the father and the mother - if there is a registration of legitimation made at the local district office or Amphur on application by the father -if there is a judgment by the court Once the registration of legitimation has been made, it cannot be revoked. However, any interested person may, within three months from the date when he or she has been notified of the registration, apply to the Court for cancellation of the registration on the ground that the person who insisted the legitimation be registered is not the father of the child; in any case no such action may be entered after ten years from the date of registration. In case where there is an objection to the applicant for registration of legitimation on account of not being the child’s father, if the applicant for registration of legitimation has brought an action to the Court for an order effecting him to be the child’s father, the child or the mother may apply to the Court in the same case for an order effecting that the applicant for registration of legitimation is not a suitable person for exercising in part or whole the parental power, even if he is the real father of the child.
