Lectures and Events Open to all AA Students TS Diploma Course: Process in the Making Thursday 20 October, 10.00 38 First Floor Front Organised by Wolfgang Frese Guest speaker David Bennett is a consultant specialising in the design, specification and workmanship of site-cast (ready-mixed) concrete for projects ranging from private dwellings to multi-storey buildings. David also has a keen interest in materials and innovative ‘cements’ that have been developed to compete with and replace plastic, aluminium and even low-grade steel. Evening Lecture Global Conversations Thursday 20 October, 6.00 Lecture Hall Global Conversations will traverse the globe in 60 minutes, starting in Chernobyl and ending in Chile, showing a slice of the past, present and forthcoming AA Visiting Schools. From Tokyo to Paris, from the AA’s home-based Summer School and dLab to the Hooke Park programmes, we’ll glimpse the extraordinary work, events and discussions that have been happening. Whether you want to see a cosmology of work from 2011 or what’s going to happen in 2012 why not take 60 minutes to immerse yourself in the Visiting Schools that make up our world view. Alan Colquhoun and his Writings: A Celebration Friday 21 October, 2.00–6.30 Lecture Hall To celebrate his 90th year and his overwhelming contribution to architectural history, the AA is hosting a special event dedicated to Alan Colquhoun. Educated at Edinburgh College of Art and the AA, Colquhoun worked in practice with John Miller in addition to over 50 years of teaching at the AA in the 1950s and 60s, the then Polytechnic of Central London in the mid 1970s and from 1978 at Princeton University. Colquhoun will be the guest of honour, and invited speakers include Mary McLeod, Françoise Fromonot, Kenneth Frampton, Bob Maxwell, Jacques Gubler and Stanislaus von Moos. AIA UK Charrette: Theme ’11 Saturday 22 October, 9.00 Lecture Hall Charrette ’11 challenges students to explore how architectural form can create both expressive and rich interior spaces that heighten an understanding of the overall concept or idea. This annual event is a lively opportunity for students to ‘limber up’ early in the academic year, as well as for recent

graduates to revisit the experience of the one-day design exercise. Participants design collaboratively, mentored by a practising architect or interior architect and are encouraged to work in teams ‘representing’ their School or practice; individuals are married-up with a team on the day. Submissions are discussed in the afternoon and prizes awarded to the three most compelling schemes. The Chairman of the Jury this year is Paul Finch OBE. £10 fee includes lunch, refreshments and reprographic services. For further details and registration, please contact Fiona Mckay at chapterexecutive@aiauk.org AA First Year and the Bloomsbury Festival: The Ideas Market Saturday 22/Sunday 23 October, Bedford Gardens Located in Bedford Square as part of the Bloomsbury Festival, the AA will host a series of ‘market stall’ installations in Bedford Square, dedicated to exploring critical conversations related to the area on the subject of art, architecture and medicine from the latter half of the 20th century to present time. A series of formal and informal talks within the AA will offer another opportunity to explore the world of Bloomsbury.

Forthcoming Events AA Archives Opening Party 2 November, 5.00–7.00 Members and students are invited to celebrate the reopening of the AA Archives in its new home in 32 Bedford Square. Exhibitions Exhibitions are open to Wednesday 26 October, Monday to Friday 10.00–7.00, Saturday 10.00–5.00 Double or Nothing 51N4E AA Gallery Double or Nothing presents the architectural and spatial projects of Brussels-based 51N4E. Curated by French architectural critic Dominique Boudet, the show re-examines some recent projects from the large-scale to the intimate. Double or Nothing from AA Publications, is available at £25. Visions of the Future Diploma Honours Students AA Bar Diploma Honours is the highest award the AA can bestow on a student, recognising excellence and talent. The exhibition enables visitors to explore work across issues as diverse as the legacy of gold mining within Aboriginal homelands, solutions to Haiti’s cholera epidemic and managing Europe’s population. AA Prizewinners Front Members’ Room AA student work is the school’s greatest asset. In recognition of this excellence, the AA awards prizes and distinctions at all levels, celebrating achievement in work ranging from outstanding writing to technical projects. Tracer Fire Joel Newman Back Members’ Room Tracer Fire explores the juxtaposition of the beauty and violence of ballistic weapons and the highly wrought nature of their machinery. An installation piece projected on to the surfaces of a room, the experience is one of being caught in crossfire or at a fireworks display. Joel Newman has shown work at the ICA and Whitechapel Art Gallery. He has taught video at the AA since 1998.
