Wakeford Hall A new academic building at the heart of the Architectural Association’s Hooke Park campus in Dorset, UK.

Recent work at Hooke Park represents a new paradigm in timber construction, developing radically innovative solutions for sustainable wood based architecture. Michael Dickson – Founding Partner, BuroHappold Engineering

We are seeking material sponsorship for the Wakeford Hall Library – a live construction project which is being both designed and fabricated by students of the MArch/MSc Design + Make programme. Hooke Park is a 130-hectare working forest owned and operated by the Architectural Association School of Architecture that contains a growing educational facility for design, workshop, construction and landscape-focused activities. Working on live building projects each year, students of the Design + Make programme develop hands-on architectural research – inhabiting an environment that combines, forest, studio, workshop and building site. This year we continue development of our flagship building – Wakeford Hall – which will form a new hub for the Hooke Park campus. When finished, it will house library, lecture theatre and reception facilities enabling Hooke Park to open up to the wider public as an educational centre furthering it’s reach as a leading body in the advancement of timber construction. Not only housing an archive, hosting seminars and public lectures but also serving a living example of the possibilities and advancement in timber architecture. This year the students are building the 100sqm two-storey library. Having already completed the structural timber frame the students are now constructing the external envelope and forming the internal workings of the library volume of the building .

The AA’s satellite campus in Hooke Park is Design + Make’s laboratory for architectural research through 1:1 fabrication.

Modern engineered timber technology and architecture is undergoing a global renaissance. The AA Design + Make MArch and MSc programmes occupy an unique and pioneering position in architectural education. Alex De Rijke, dRMM Architects

The Design + Make programmme is regognised worldwide for the exploration and realisation of architecture through the synthesis of advanced technologies, craft techniques and deep understanding of natural material. Students explore new digital design and fabrication technologies through emerging tools such as digital 3D scanning, generative modelling and robotic fabrication which provide new opportunities for feedback between natural geometry, material properties and designed form. Since the programme’s inception in 2010, projects have included the successful completion of three campus residences and a series of infrastructural buildings that have each been ambitious experimental projects that aim to use timber inventively and explore sustainable construction. Our work is well published in the press and through academic journals. For more information; designandmake.aaschool.ac.uk hookepark.aaschool.ac.uk instagram.com/aadesignandmake

Material Sponsorship Join us in our vision. We are seeking supporters to help us achieve our ambition for Hooke Park with the addition of this central educational hub - Wakeford Hall. Material sponsorship is sought to contribute to the development of this new building at our campus in the form of: •

Full material sponsorship - i.e. full donation of building products

Part material sponsorship - i.e. supply at cost/discounted price

All sponsors will be informed of the impact of their support. Documentary photography be available for your own publicity and marketing. There will be a board of supporters displayed in the building and all major supporters will be credited in relevant press releases and our wide reaching social media platforms. In addition to this all sponsors will be invited to attend the official opening of this landmark building - Wakeford Hall.

The AA’s Design + Make is a dream-come-true for creative invention and building at full scale for students and practitioners. Working with the raw material from the living forest, where nothing is wasted, teaches a respect for the natural cycle of things and must instil ethical values in those who can experience it. Carol Costello, Practice Leader, Cullinan Studio, 2017

The Architectural Association is a UK registered charity. The AA relies upon support to help uphold its global status as one of the most influential schools of architecture in the world. Thanks to the generous contributions of AA Members, alumni and friends, the School continues to build on its reputation.
