The Cover Story AN INSPIRATION

The design is inspired by Tāmaki Makaurau. The name refers to the many lovers of Maki, one of the original inhabitants of the area. His name expresses the many descendants that come from his lineage, as well as a metaphor for the many things that make Tāmaki Makaurau one of the most bountiful places in the world.

T

he waka (canoe) represents the original migratory waka that brought the Māori to Aotearoa (New Zealand), particularly the Tainui waka that played an important part in the history of Tāmaki Makaurau. It also represents the important role of the tangata whenua (the people of the land), the many iwi (tribes) and hapū (sub tribes) that settled in this area and brought

the energy of the Māori culture and values to the city. The bird represents native birds and their home in the Waitākere Ranges. The diagonal split separating the vibrant green and blue natural environment from the darker section beneath talks of the things that the city has to offer both day and night, from outdoor experiences through to amazing food, wine, art, culture and events.

What’s in a Name? Tāmaki Makaurau – a place desired by many Tāmaki Herenga Waka – the place where many canoes gather These are the Māori names given to Auckland. They speak of our diverse landscapes, beautiful harbours and fertile soils. They speak of the coming together of different iwi (tribes) to meet and trade. In the spirit of manaakitanga – hospitality and openness of spirit – we welcome our visitors as guests. Discover this spirit as you connect with the people, land and stories that have shaped our region.

Top Tips for

Eco-friendly Travel Luckily, a little goes a long way... If possible, carry a reusable water bottle and keep-cup.

Eat locally sourced food. Help us keep our beaches beautiful by disposing of litter.

Ask your hotel to refill your water bottles. Carry reusable grocery bags.

When hiking, leave nothing behind: everything you carry in, carry out.

Get around on rental bikes, e-scooters and public transport.

Stick to walking tracks to avoid damaging natural habitat.

Hire a hybrid rental car from HERTZ.

Book an Uber. Many use hybrid cars.

Picnic using metal cutlery and straws (cheap at Kmart!)

Use sunscreen free from coral-harming oxybenzone and octinoxate.

Look for the recycling symbol on cans, plastic, paper and cardboard.

Free activities in

summer There’s no need to spend a small fortune to have a truckload of fun in Auckland. These seven ideas are either completely free or super affordable.

Wherever you are in Auckland, you’re never far from the sea.

SUMMER IS THE PERFECT SEASON to get out and about and enjoy some of the city’s exciting events. To celebrate Auckland’s Anniversary Day, the city will hold the world’s single biggest one-day sailing regatta in the spectacular Waitematā Harbour and Hauraki Gulf on 27 January 2020. ANIMAL ENCOUNTERS

Mangere Bridge’s Ambury Farm Loop Path is a fun, 20-minute walk interspersed with sheep, goats, cows, pigs, rabbits and, if he’s feeling sociable, a beautiful (but very elusive) peacock. Meander the grassy lanes and get acquainted with the furry residents; visitors are welcome to enter the paddocks and say hello.

2

CLAMBER UP A VOLCANO

Piha Beach, West Auckland © Chris Sisarich

What’s more impressive, the panoramic views from one of Auckland’s largest volcanoes, or looking into a colossal crater that once spewed magma? It's too close to call, but both will take your breath away. Climb the peaks of Mt Eden, One Tree Hill or Mt Victoria in Devonport for far-reaching panoramas, explore lava caves on Rangitoto Island or, if you prefer fewer crowds, join the dog walkers atop the smaller, more sedate Mt Albert.

3

WATCH AN OUTDOOR FILM

Every weekend between December and March, the end of the Wynyard Quarter transforms into an outdoor entertainment complex. On Friday from 5pm, there’s live music and cheap food trucks as well as free movies projected on the silo tower from 9pm. On Saturday and Sunday between midday and 6pm there are giant-sized garden games such as XL Jenga.

4

MEANDER THE MARKETS

Night markets occur every night of the week in one suburb or another, but for CBD convenience, follow your nose to Wilson car park on Shortland Street. Every Friday delicious wafts of food fill the air. Auckland Fish Market has skyrocketed in popularity since debuting several new eateries beside their long-standing Sanford & Son fishmonger, and La Cigale, the city’s French0-inspired market, pops up every Saturday and Sunday morning. River-fronting Matakana Market is an hour’s drive away, but the fresh deli goods are well worth the mileage.

5

ENJOY SUN-SOAKED COASTLINES

When the city is drenched in sunshine there’s nothing better than walking along the waterfront between the Ports of Auckland and Mission Bay. At 8km, it’ll take a few hours, but the route is flat and flanked by stunning turquoise water sprinkled with ferries and pleasure boats. You’ll pass a handful of golden bays en route, some with free-to-use barbecues, and should you find $20 in your back pocket, hire rollerblades from Fergs Kayaks and skate the extra 2km to St Heliers.

HIT THE PLAYGROUNDS

You’ll find no end of playgrounds in Auckland but those with serious fun factor include Rocket Park in Mt Albert, with its blue and red spaceship complete with three levels to scale. The snakes and ladders playground at Farm Cove in Pakuranga allows kids to become the playing pieces, moving between numbered steps and tube slides. Then there are the waka-shaped treehouses at Ōrakei Domain playground, just 300m from the beach and covered in Māori carvings.

7

TAKE A SELF-GUIDED STREET ART WALK

Start at the eastern end of Karangahape Road (also known as 'K' Rd') by the Rock Shop, notable for its Aretha Franklin decal created by Paul Walsh. Dotting the city, much of Walsh’s work can be found on funky telephone utility boxes. Potter down the graffiti-lined steps at St Kevins Arcade and duck into Poynton Terrace for several secret motifs. Pitt Street is home to both the Virgin Mary and Marilyn Monroe, while Samoa House Lane features an impressive but littleknown portrait. Double back onto K' Rd, dip down East Street to see a fun 70s mural and then walk to the corner of Ponsonby Road for a full row of thought-provoking billboards.

What’s the most popular museum exhibit? Our Māori gallery which showcases a beautiful collection of artefacts including marae, waka and hunting-related items like nets and bird catchers. It’s a great representation of delicate and intricate Māori weaving and carving. It also offers insight into traditional Māori culture while keeping it alive today through celebration. What would you recommend to a family with small children at the museum? The Volcanoes exhibition complete with a volcano simulator set inside a house is super lively and interactive. The Weird & Wonderful children’s gallery is also a beautiful and interactive space complete with thousands of taxidermy animals, birds, insects and shells from New Zealand and around the world. What is your personal favourite exhibit in the museum?

I have a few! There’s our beautiful sculpture of Kave, a strong goddess from a small island in the Caroline Islands. Picasso has even referenced her in his art. Then there’s the Fijian vaka, a fishing boat constructed without nails, using coconut fibre. The sail has been sewn in patches so if it ripped during a storm, the crew wouldn’t need to rejig it entirely, only the damaged section. It’s similar to the boat that features in the movie Moana which is thrilling to a lot of people. Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum, Central Auckland

A LONG WEEKEND IN AUCKLAND He Paunga Wiki Roa ki Tāmaki

As much as Auckland is a slick city, it’s just as likely to dish up something wild as it is a gastronomic meal. An urban jungle that rubs shoulders with the great outdoors, spend 72 hours exploring its diverse surroundings.

DAY 1: SAIL TO WAIHEKE ISLAND Waiheke Island: 40-minute ferry from downtown Auckland The climate on Waiheke Island is slightly warmer than Auckland, hence its suitability for wine making, and why a day trip can often feel like a mini-holiday. Just a 40-minute ferry ride from the Downtown Ferry Building, once the wind is in your hair and Auckland’s shiny skyline dissolves into the distance, you’ll feel instantly relaxed. HOT TIP: Should you feel inclined, Island Gelato located at the Downtown Ferry Building serves ice cream to rival the Italian's: the perfect treat for a ferry trip.

Waiheke Island, Hauraki Gulf © Matt Crawford

Cover a lot of ground in a small amount of time with a hop-on, hop-off bus pass. With 17 stops in close proximity to all of Waiheke’s best beaches, vineyards and seaside villages, get on and off as much as you like, or stay on-board for a full 90-minute scenic tour, complete with commentary. Freedom-seekers can rent scooters, conveniently located a few steps from the Waiheke ferry terminal. Divide the day between dining at Oneroa’s excellent cafés, discovering a handful of the island’s 30-plus vineyards and meandering along secluded coastal walkways. Or for a little more action, try forest zip-lining or horse treks along the beach. As the sun retreats, head to Little Oneroa for pizza on the beach from a food cart, or ferry back to the city and dine on the harbour while marvelling at milliondollar yachts.

DAY 2: HEAD OUT WEST Kumeu: 40min drive from downtown Auckland Muriwai Gannet Colony: 50min drive from downtown Auckland Woodhill Forest: 90min drive from downtown Auckland The wild west coast is rugged by name and rugged by nature. Famed for its black sand and pounding waves, the beaches at Muriwai, Bethells and Piha are a haven for surfers, but we don’t recommend anything more than a paddle if you’re not a strong, seasoned swimmer. Observe the enormous Muriwai Gannet Colony, causing a ruckus on the cliffs between August and March. Should you wish to exploit the west coast’s rough-and-ready conditions, the surf school at Muriwai rents out wind-powered

go-karts when it’s gusty. Or head to Bethells Beach and discover the enormous black-sand dunes fronting Lake Wainamu. Venture back to Auckland via Titirangi or Kumeu. The latter is home to the region’s oldest vineyard and a flurry of boutique cellar doors. Stop for wine tasting before descending on The Riverhead, New Zealand’s oldest riverside tavern, for a burger. With famed Kiwi painter Colin McCahon as a former resident, Titirangi is an artsy neighbourhood. Discover the museum in his honour, as well as two popular art galleries. HOT TIP: An alternative way to get to The Riverhead is via ferry, which departs Pier 3 in the CBD and docks at the pub’s jetty 90 minutes later.

DAY 3: VENTURE NORTH Driving 20 minutes north will feel like you’ve swapped city life for paradise, such is the diversity of Auckland and its surrounds. Miniature road trips are one of the most rewarding and scenic ways to admire the natural beauty on Auckland’s doorstep. Spend little more than an hour on the road and enjoy a day up north. Set off early and stop in Takapuna, just a 15-minute drive from the CBD, for breakfast. Takapuna Beach Café and Store is a local favourite, notably for its glorious beach-fronting position and heavenly food. Continue north until you reach Leigh one hour later. It’s time to get in the water. Goat Island Marine Reserve is swarming with an underwater city of fish and marine life. Rent snorkels from dive stores in Leigh and stick your head under. There is also a glass-bottomed boat and kayaks for those who don’t want to get their hair wet. SUMMER AUCKLAND – FREE OFFICIAL GUIDE

With stomachs growling, drive 30-minutes back down the road to Matakana, a charming wee village with all the attributes to make you wish you lived there. Once you’ve admired the world-famous Matakana toilets, lauded by Lonely Planet for their striking design, pop into the Matakana Village Pub. With a mouth-watering menu, garden courtyard and oodles of local hospitality, you won’t want to leave. Should time permit, visit one of Matakana’s wineries, all but a five-minute drive away. Ascension Wine Estate, Brick Bay Wines and Matakana Estate never fail to impress. HOT TIP: Fat Freddy's Drop, Fly My Pretties and The Black Seeds are all Kiwi bands and make a great road trip play list.

What are your top 5 mustdo’s for Auckland visitors? Eat local – Head to food precincts like Ponsonby Central, Britomart, North Wharf, Federal Street or the City Works Depot with its cool vibes and tuckedaway places. Try green-lipped mussels, oysters, fish and lamb. Head to the wild west – Experience black-sand beaches, waterfalls and lush bush just 45 minutes from downtown. Treat yourself to a tasting at a West Auckland vineyard or brewery. Grab a coffee at Titirangi, our treetop village and head to rugged Piha for fish and chips.

26

Get sky high – Climb one of the city’s volcanoes and enjoy the views, go up the Skytower or do the Harbour Bridge Walk for an adrenalin rush. There’s no better way to shake off jet lag. Visit Cornwall Park – With sheep, cows and flora, the park’s green-carpeted rolling meadows and stonewalls are popular backdrops for photos. Discover the world’s biggest Māori fortress (or pā) atop its volcanic peak. Walk this way – Along the city’s waterfront boardwalk to the Westhaven Marina beside Auckland’s Harbour Bridge. Or visit the Kitekite Falls out west.

Tell us about one hidden gem that visitors can see on foot. Stroll through Myers Park to Karangahape road or K' Rd. Auckland’s gritty melting pot of artists, poets, fashionistas, students and the down-on-theirluck locals. Don’t expect pretty. Do expect cheap eats, cool bars, vintage shops and tattoo studios. It’s where the Aucklanders hang. And a spot most visitors miss.

Why is a sustainable approach to tourism so important? People love New Zealand’s natural beauty, friendliness and Māori culture. Without this golden triangle to differentiate us, our place in the world is lost. Protecting the nest (kaitiakitanga) means we will have a tourism livelihood in future. So generations to come, both locals and visitors can enjoy this special place.

How can visitors travel greener while here? Linger longer – Immerse yourself in a spot rather than rushing through. Slow travel creates deeper connections, lifelong memories and reduces your carbon footprint. Buy New Zealand – Shop at local markets and craft stores. Pay a fair price for hand-crafted goods. Buy greenstone or pounamu carved by a New Zealander. Book experiences which support causes, are eco-friendly or Māori-run. Pay for camping sites to help our operators thrive. Travel clean – Do a walking tour or multi-day hike. Go electric and use public transport. Hop on a bus, hire an e-bike, e-scooter, ev-rental car or catch the train to Wellington. If you have rubbish, please bin it and travel with a refillable water bottle.

melting pot of culinary flair, prepare to be adjusting the notches on your belt buckle after time spent in Auckland. Hitting the headlines this summer is Westfield’s Rooftop Dining Precinct in Newmarket’s revamped mega-mall. Auckland’s first rooftop food emporium is a mecca of global flavours, including the German joint, The Bavarian and INCA, a Peruvian-inspired eatery, amongst others. Newmarket is also now home to international ramen chain, Ajisen. Founded in Japan in 1968, the dishes are wholly authentic. Other newcomers include Celeste on Karangahape Road, a French

bistro and bar, and Hello Stranger in the up-and-coming suburb of East Tamaki. Their thick buttery brioche known as Lava Toast is a standout. The same owners run The Chosen Bun in Stonefields, applauded for their moreish burgers. In the CBD, Amano continues to knock patron’s socks off with an all-day menu, adjoining artisan bakery and slick interior straight out of a New York neighbourhood, while the top-floor Vue Restaurant at Grand Mercure offers a high tea to match its high-rise vistas, complete with bottomless Bellinis and unlimited scones every Saturday and Sunday between 1 and 4pm.

WILD BEAUTIFUL BEACHES Strung like black pearls, the dynamic surf beaches that line the coast are what the region is best known for. Wander along the striking black sand and feel the power of the tugging water. In March 2020, Piha Beach will host the World Surf League (WSL) challenger event.

With strong surf pounding onto a long expanse of black sand, Muriwai is popular with walkers, surfers and swimmers. Horse riding and surf lessons are available too. Although beautiful, these beaches are dangerous – only swim when lifeguards are on duty, and only between the red and yellow flags. RANGITOTO ISLAND

A visit to Auckland is not complete without a visit to that familiar shaped volcano dominating the view: Rangitoto Island. Ferry services deliver day trippers to the island, timed to allow for a walk to its summit and back. It’s a fascinating walk through a volcanic landscape, shaded much of the way by native trees and the view from the peak is sensational. Other walking tracks lead past quaint old baches, along the coast, and to neighbouring Motutapu Island, over a causeway. Another experience is to kayak to Rangitoto Island, an option that some choose to tackle in the evening in time for the sunset.

PROTECTING THE

GULF

A great part of the Gulf is actually a protected park. The Hauraki Gulf Marine Park consists of Little Barrier Island, half of Great Barrier Island, Rangitoto Island, Motutapu Island, parts of other islands and mainland sites, five marine reserves and the Firth of Thames wetland.

Fascinated by ancient history? Head for Motukorea or Browns Island, which for at least six centuries was a base for Māori gardening and fishing. Archaeological sites include archaic middens, rare stone structures and fish traps. Access to this island is by private boat; consider joining a half-day guided kayaking tour, leaving from St Heliers Bay boat ramp.

PEST FREE Many of Hauraki Gulf’s islands are free of pests. Help by checking your gear for pests, cleaning footwear of soil and seeds and sealing your bags, in case of stow-away rodents or insects. SUMMER AUCKLAND – FREE OFFICIAL GUIDE
