5 WAYS TO MAKE THE MOST OF
Central North Island KAYAK TO AN ISLAND PARADISE Move over Thailand, picture-perfect paradise is no longer the realm of Ko Phi Phi. Instead, Whenuakura Island – also known as Donut Island – takes the crown for the most idyllic droplet of land. Located just one kilometre off Whangamata Beach, kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding through its 12-metre cave reveals a secret lagoon blessed with turquoise water, lush foliage and bright pōhutukawa trees. This tropical paradise is a wildlife sanctuary so visitors are advised to book with a guided tour and stay within their kayak to protect the flora. SWIM AT MCLAREN FALLS Lured by the promise of hot rocks to bask on, shallow pools to swim in and cascading water falls, you’d pay good money to enjoy such luxuries at a spa resort, but at McLaren Falls it’s all free of charge – compliments of Mother Nature. Located just a 10-minute drive outside of Tauranga, head towards the Kaimai Ranges and follow the road signs. It gets busy in summer but there are still plenty of sun-warmed ledges to lounge across, calm pools of water and rock faces to leap from. DON’T STOP UNTIL YOU’VE SQUEEZED OUT EVERY LAST DROP OF CENTRAL NORTH ISLAND’S BEST BITS.
RELAX IN A GEOTHERMAL SPA IN ROTORUA DISCOVER BELCHING ROTORUA MUD It doesn’t matter if you’re four years old or forty, the gurgling, steaming landscape that is typical of Rotorua evokes imaginations of trolls and boggy goblins. A selfguided 90-minute walk around the world’s youngest geothermal valley, Waimangu Volcanic Valley, will introduce you to an otherworldly landscape of bubbling pools and a stench emitting from the Earth’s ancient bowels. Created during the eruption of Mt Tarawera in 1886, the entire park is gloriously uncrowded, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in this dramatic landscape.
SOAK UNDER A STARLIT SKY You know as soon as you step inside The Lost Spring Geothermal Pool and Day Spa that you’re in for a treat. The towels are fluffy, the service is five-star and the hot pools themselves are the result of 16,000-year-old waters bubbling 667 metres underground. You’ll feel like a deity stepping into these mineral-rich lagoons. On Friday and Saturday the spa is open until 9pm and come nightfall, the area is also aglow with subtle mood lighting. Lie back and relax; as steam evaporates around you, allow your gaze to follow its path skyward and admire the stars.
SAIL INTO THE SUNSET Join Sail Barbary for a relaxed sunset cruise on Lake Taupō. The yacht, which is as glamorous as it is eco-friendly, features huge white sails and an electric engine. Lounge on the deck or sink into a beanbag while the vessel glides across New Zealand’s largest lake. From hidden bays to enormous Māori rock art adorning the cliffs of Mine Bay, beauty is drenched in history. Welcome the evening with a complimentary glass of wine or beer and float away with your thoughts. Should you miss the evening cruise, there are up to three sailings during daylight hours too. Weather Watch It’s important to know what’s happening with the weather. New Zealand’s weather is changeable and unpredictable; parts of the country are susceptible to cyclones, other parts to strong winds and heavy rain. Sudden drops in temperature can take you from hot days to cold nights, especially in spring and autumn, so be prepared. Carry extra clothing, rain gear, sun hats and sun block.
Temperatures
Be conscious that New Zealand’s UV is very strong. Always protect your skin from the sun. New Zealand’s official weather forecaster is MetService, available online, where you’ll find up-to-date information on localised areas, as well as specifically for marine and surf, mountains and parks. Local and national radio stations also regularly update weather predictions. Tune in on the car radio. Average summer

he Shorebird Coast covers the western coast of the Firth of Thames, and the Chenier shell coast is world-renowned for its spectacular bird-watching, so don’t forget your binoculars for a close-up look. Visit the Pūkorokoro Miranda Shorebird Centre for more information. The Shorebird Coast is also known for its succulent seafood – locals can often be seen collecting shellfish along the shoreline. The Hauraki Rail Trail cycle route runs from Thames to Pūkorokoro-Miranda. Soak away your troubles at Miranda Hot Springs, the southern hemisphere’s largest natural hot mineral pool. A 10-minute drive north is Kaiaua, nestled in the Hūnua Ranges foothills. GOLD RUSH CAPITAL
C
The Coromandel
oromandel Town’s early beginnings were as a tough, colonial, goldrush settlement, and the place has clung to its roots. It has immaculately restored Victorian buildings, craft studios, art galleries, cafés and is surrounded by lush forests with good bush walks. Come for the restored Victorian buildings, craft studios, art galleries and cafés; stay for the surrounding stunning forests, bush walks and gold mining. Some of New Zealand’s best mussels and oysters come from the waters here so take a charter boat out to the smaller islands for sightseeing and fishing. Safe swimming spots are found in the local bays or you can cast your line from the rocky foreshore.
DON’T MISS For unmatched views of Coromandel Town and surrounds, take a mountain train ride with Driving Creek Railway. Providing shuttle service from the town centre, a bird sanctuary, art gallery and café, this is one of the area’s best attractions. Long Bay, Coromandel Town © AATP

The Coromandel
WHAT’S IN A NAME? HMS Coromandel, the first European ship to bring settlers to the region, was named after India’s Coromandel Coast and the region came to take the same name. Local Māori called the Coromandel Peninsula, Te Tarao-te-Ika-a-Maui, or the barb of the fish of Maui. It is believed that Maui used the barb to catch a stingray which then became the North Island.

VISIT THE POPULAR HOLIDAY SPOTS OF WHITIANGA, WHANGAMATA AND WAIHI.
W
HITIANGA is a popular family holiday spot with sparking beaches, deep harbours and fresh seafood. The town centre is a relaxed haven with plenty to do and a fantastic range of restaurants and cafés. Striking Mercury Bay is replete with water activities, with seven great beaches for swimming, diving, banana boat rides, scenic cruises, fishing
charters or kayaking. Buffalo Beach is 3km of white sand and Lonely Bay is quiet and secluded. Find inner peace on a sailing trip to the Aldermen or Mercury islands. Activities on dry land include quad biking, golf, mountain biking, horse trekking, bone carving, mini-golf, and the museum. The Whitianga Scallop Festival, in September, is a week-long event of intensive shucking and eating. Take a short ferry ride from Whitianga to Ferry Landing, then walk to Cooks Beach via Front Bay and Flaxmill Bay (about 40 minutes each way). It’s a 12-minute drive from Ferry Landing
to wondrous Cathedral Cove, Hahei and Hot Water Beach. Everything in Whangamata is a dazzling shade of aqua blue or shimmering green. Retreat into lush forest, or surf, sail and swim at a sighinducing beach. Donut island, with its emerald lagoon, can be accessed via kayak and is still somewhat a secret. Waihi town has prospered from mining over the years but it’s the beach that really struck gold. With epic surfing waves and a long stretch of silky sand, it’s the jewel in an already glistening crown.

T
his huge arcing coastline was named the Bay of Plenty by Captain Cook after he saw local Māori with abundant supplies of food. Today the region still has a warm, sunny climate, fertile soils, bountiful harvests and rich wildlife. Sample the best of it. Organic avocado, citrus, kiwifruit, nuts and other subtropical fruits are available everywhere, including at roadside stalls.
Head down to the water’s edge where you will discover stretches of sublime sugar-sand beaches ideal for surfing, windsurfing, kayaking, water-skiing and swimming. Go scuba diving and snorkelling and see abundant marine life. Visit volcanic islands, including active White Island, or just kick off your jandals and chill on a beach. Sunshine, sand and surf are top of the bill here but Tauranga, New Zealand’s fastest-
growing city, has an active arts and music scene. Its dazzling blue harbour, and outstanding parks and gardens add to the attraction. You will also find scenic walks with panoramic vistas, waterfalls, wildlife safari tours, cycle trails, scenic walks, adventure activities, golf courses and Māori cultural and historical experiences to entice and enthral you.

The Haiku Pathway, the only one outside of Japan, winds past Uretara Stream and features more than 40 haiku poems carved into river boulders.
Katikati’s prosperity owes much to horticulture. Avocados, kiwifruit, nashi pears, citrus fruit, flowers and vegetables are all grown here, and you can meet the locals and stock up on provisions at the local market every Friday from 4-6pm at the A&P Showgrounds.
There are lots of unique attractions here. Soak in a thermal pool at Sapphire Springs while listening to tūī sing, stroll around the Katikati Bird Gardens and admire the camellias and magnolias. Check out the Western Bay
Don’t forget to visit The Wine Portfolio Cellar Door to taste the finest selection of wines, or spend the day sampling local fare at the Katikati Avocado Food and Wine Festival on 18 January 2020, held at the Uretara Domain.

āori discovered Tauranga in the 13th century and called it ‘the place of rest or anchorage’. It’s a physical and spiritual symbol of their identity. Stroll around the harbour for a glimpse of over a thousand yachts and launches, or jump on board a charter boat and head out to the internationally renowned deepsea fishing waters. There are also opportunities to go diving, kayaking and surfing, or to join an island excursion. By day, The Strand waterfront’s fine array of restaurants, cafés and
bars will cater for every craving, while Saturday’s farmers’ market will cause equal excitement for your taste buds. If you have children in need of burning off surplus energy, The Hairy Maclary Sculpture Park features nine bronze figurines from Lynley Dodd’s much-loved children’s books. Better yet, little ones are welcome to clamber all over them. By night, an evening sail is an exquisite way to take in the shimmering lights of the city. Or join a glowworm kayaking tour; paddle into the sunset from Lake McLaren and discover an enchanting canyon.

ith its surf vibe and relaxed feel, Mt Maunganui has a holiday atmosphere all year round. At the southern end of Tauranga Harbour, it sits on a peninsula with ocean surf Main Beach on one side and lovely sheltered Pilot Bay, ideal for swimming, on the other.
Situated at the base of the mountain (Mauao) on both ocean & harbour beaches, next to boat ramp, cafés & the hot salt-water pools. Popular family park. Ideal for schools & groups. Sites from $40, cabins from $85 (1-2 persons). Seasonal rates apply.

Watersports are the thing to do here, and windsurfing, kayaking, water-skiing, parasailing, skydiving and kite sailing are enjoyed all year round. The good breaks at Main Beach make it an excellent place to learn surfing. DON’T MISS! New Zealand’s Sunshine Capital doesn’t just offer month upon month of vitamin-D boosting sunbeams, it also offers a four-month long jamboree: the Summer Arts Festival. Running January through to April, festivities include dance carnivals, outdoor jazz concerts, films, theatre and live sculpture making, complete with tutors onhand. Packing your camp chair is a must – from the opera to Shakespeare in the park, there’s a lot to sit down and soak up. Including the sunshine.

hakatāne has a strong Māori heritage and you can experience the cultural traditions of New Zealand’s first people on guided tours here. Enjoy a hangi feast, visit a marae, pā site and learn a traditional Māori craft. Sunny Whakatāne is officially the
nation’s kiwi capital. Take a night tour to see the birds in their natural habitat, or tour wildlife sanctuary Moutohorā (Whale Island) and watch the largest colony of mutton birds in the country returning at night. A fleet of charter boats is also available to take visitors diving, fishing and to swim with dolphins.
Another attraction nearby is the Whirinaki Forest and Te Urewera National Park where you can walk, hunt, fish, horse trek or go white-water rafting. Ngā Tapuwae o Toi is one of Whakatāne’s most popular walkways, featuring pā sites, pōhutukawa trees, coastal views and bird colonies. The
Whirinaki Track, which runs past river terraces, is more challenging, taking two to five days. In town, visit Mataatua Wharenui, a marae which travelled worldwide and returned home in 2011. A must-visit while in Whakatāne is the active marine volcano White Island/Whakaari.

ust 49km offshore from Whakatāne is active marine volcano White Island/Whakaari. The 2km-wide island is 321m above sea level so most of the volcano is hidden underwater.
Māori call it Te Puia o Whakaari which means dramatic volcano. Sulphur deposits have created a vivid yellow, green and orange crater landscape which is constantly changing. A new crater lake was formed after an eruption in 2000. Steam hisses from vents in the ground, pits bubble with sulphurous chemicals and temperatures can reach 800°. Get here by boat or helicopter and soak up the tour guide’s tales of the miners who had the dangerous job of extracting the sulphur. White Island / Whakaari © White Island Tours

he first Polynesian canoes landed here followed by Captain Cook. This is rural heartland New Zealand, the land of explorers, ripe for adventure and paradise for visitors. Take a road trip ‘out east’ on the Pacific Coast Highway, SH 35, and be gobsmacked by the giant loop road which hugs the dramatic coastline for more than 300km. Beautiful scenery prostrates itself before you on this journey into Tairāwhiti, which translates as ‘the coast upon which the sun shines across the water’. This is a promised land of remote surf beaches, rocky headlands, beautifully
carved marae, historic churches and the red blooms of summer flowering pōhutukawa. This is a real corner of New Zealand, where community ties built on rural enterprise are strong and a love of the ocean is shared by all. Tractors on the beach, horse-back riding and fresh kaimoana for dinner – it’s all part of daily life in Tairāwhiti Gisborne. It’s likely for much of this journey you will have the road to yourself and generous amounts of sunshine. There is just one rule to keep in mind when travelling around the East Cape – take your time!

isborne is a prosperous and sunny port city boasting unspoilt beaches, a Mediterranean-style climate, and good cafés and restaurants. Modern-day New Zealand began when Captain Cook arrived here in 1769, landing on Kaitī Beach, making the first European contact with Māori. At the top of Kaitī Hill there is a statue of Captain James Cook, but controversy surrounds its authenticity. Some argue it bears little resemblance to the man. Either way, the views from his standing

THIS REGION IS DOMINATED BY THE WAIKATO RIVER WHICH PROVIDES PHYSICAL AND SPIRITUAL NOURISHMENT TO ITS PEOPLE. THE RIVER NOURISHES THE BUCOLIC ROLLING HILLS AND PLUNGES DEEP INTO SUBTERRANEAN LIMESTONE CAVERNS AND FLOWS TO THE WILD COAST. YOU’LL FIND RICH MĀORI HERITAGE AND THE MAGIC LAND OF MIDDLE-EARTH HERE.
T
he deep flowing Waikato, New Zealand’s longest river, winds through the beating heart of the North Island. Rising on the eastern slopes of Mt Ruapehu in the Central Volcanic Plateau, the river navigates Lake Taupō and the Huka Falls before flowing northwest through the Waikato Plains. The river’s life force radiates across the region. Historically, it was a critical communications and transport route, and always an important treasure (taonga) providing physical and spiritual well-being for Māori. An adventure playground for kayakers and rowers, walkers and mountain bikers, the river also supports the region’s agriculture and generates power through its eight dams and nine hydro-electric stations. Winding its way through Hamilton, New Zealand’s largest inland city,
the river’s tributaries fan out to nourish the region, maintaining everything from the green rolling hills used as film locations in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogies, to the 30-million-year-old intricate limestone cave network deep underground. Visitors have been flocking to Waitomo for over 130 years to see the stalactites and stalagmites and glowworms. And there’s a whole lot more to this beautiful region. The landscape’s striking arches, tunnels and fluted outcrops, native bush and thick forests and rugged surf beaches are also a magnet for cyclists, walkers, nature lovers, bird watchers and surfers. And those looking for culture, history and good cuisine will love the diversity here too.

ne of the most famous geothermal attractions is Pohutu Geyser in Te Puia, only five minutes from central Rotorua. Erupting up to 20 times a day, this geyser reaches heights of more than 30m. Wai-O-Tapu, 27km south of Rotorua, includes Lady Knox Geyser and an easily accessible, diverse 18sq km geothermal park – a definite must-do. Visit Waimangu Volcanic Valley, which was formed by the Mt Tarawera eruption. The force of the eruption split the mountain in two, creating a 17km rift in the Earth’s crust and seven impressive craters. Explore the colourful lakes, geysers and silica terraces.

Rotorua’s Best MOUNTAIN BIKING
Mountain biking, Rotorua © Chester Boyes / Destination Rotorua
Over indulging at Rotorua’s best eateries needn’t lead to another notch on your belt. This is a world-ranking mountain biking destination with varying trails of kilojouleburning difficulty… here are five of the top spots you could check out:
54
1 2
The gondola-assisted bike lift at Skyline Gravity Park Rotorua grants easy access to 13km network of trails with varying terrain for all levels.
3 4
Don’t take your eyes off the Moerangi Track for too long. Yes, the fringing rivers and forests are stunning, but sneaky tree stumps are just as numerous.
Te Ara Ahi – Thermal By Bike, one of New Zealand’s Great Rides, is 48km of easy to intermediate trails through four geothermal fields. Rainbow Mountain beckons experienced riders to its challenging terrain while nearby natural hot pools come to the rescue after a bumpy ride.
5
Whakarewarewa Forest has raved-about mountain bike tracks and a purpose-built trail network. If you didn’t manage to squeeze your push bike into your carry-on, fear not, bike hire, maintenance and advice is all readily available. Rotorua has more bike shops per capita than anywhere else in New Zealand.

Living History
E
xperience Rotorua’s history and delve into Māori culture at the Buried Village, Mitai Māori Village, Whakarewarewa – the Living Thermal Village or Tāmaki Māori Village. Māori culture is an integral part of New Zealand society, and is central to life in Rotorua, which has one of the highest Māori populations in the country. The people of Te Arawa tribe first settled in the Rotorua region, becoming the original tour guides to the thermal attractions. The spirit of hospitality (manaakitanga) is as important now as it was then and the guides still take tourists to the same thermal sites. They also recall Māori myths and legends through song, dance and storytelling. When you visit a Māori village, be prepared for a spine-tingling haka, as well as poi dances, traditional songs and combat displays.

The Redwood Memorial Grove track is the forest’s most popular walk, although there are great walking tracks ranging from 30-minute strolls to all-day treks. You can also see the forest from a different viewpoint – suspended in mid-air. The Redwoods Treewalk is a walkway made up of 23 suspension bridges up to 12m high. During your three-hour Canopy Tour you’ll be guided through the magical Mamaku Forest on a 1.2km network of six ziplines, swing bridges and treetop platforms up to 22m high in the canopy of an ancient native forest. Keep an eye and ear out for robins, kererū, tomtit, tūī,
bellbirds, whiteheads, kaka and fantails. Around 20 per cent of the forest is free from pesky predators and the aim is to return the ecosystem to the one Captain James Cook discovered when he first arrived in this country in 1769. Commonly known as zorbing, it was right here in Rotorua where the concept was first devised. Choose from four different tracks and roll down Mt Ngongotaha in a giant inflatable ball. Zorbing might now be a worldwide activity, but Rotorua is still the only location in New Zealand where you can try it.

B
eautiful vast Lake Taupō is actually an immense volcanic caldera – or collapsed crater – created after the Oruanui Eruption 27,000 years ago. Lake Taupō, the biggest lake in Australasia and roughly the size of Singapore, is actually one of the world’s most formidable and active supervolcanoes. The Chinese and the Romans recorded seeing dramatic red skies, thought to be ash from the Taupō or Hātepe Eruption 1800 years ago. The region’s hot pools and springs are tell-tale signs of the magma chambers
sitting below this seemingly serene huge lake. To the south, in the Ruapehu district, lies the Tongariro National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the first area in New Zealand to be bestowed national park status. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a one-day walk across the central plateau, is one of New Zealand’s most popular hikes. The North Island’s tallest mountains can be seen from most areas in the region, but views of Mt Tongariro, Mt Ngāuruhoe
and Mt Ruapehu are particularly good on the Volcanic Loop, from Tūrangi on the eastern shores of Lake Taupō to National Park Village, Ōhakune and Waiouru, before circling back. Wherever you are in the region, there is a natural playground waiting for you right on the doorstep. Climb mountains, tramp, ski, snowboard, fish, mountain bike or opt for full-throttle action with a skydive, jet-boat ride, off-roading or a white-water rafting adventure. This region is truly nature’s ultimate playground.

Ō
rakei Kōrako, known as ‘the Hidden Valley’, is a stunning geothermal attraction 25 minutes north of Taupō and reached on a short ferry ride over Lake Ohakuri. It has 23 active geysers, more than any other geothermal field, and its fault-stepped sinter, silica terraces are also reported to be the largest of their kind in the world. Highlights of the valley include the Soda Fountain, Diamond Geyser, and Ruatapu Cave (sacred hole), which stretches 36m down to a hot pool named The Pool of Mirrors. Enjoy a coffee at the café and wander through the bush.

t is hardly surprising that Huka Falls is New Zealand’s bestknown falls. A visit here is an exhilarating and free experience! The sheer volume of water from the Waikato River, rushing at 220,000 litres per second over the 11m-high waterfall, is enough to fill an Olympic-size pool in 11 seconds.
A bridge crosses the chasm, just above the falls, with a number of viewing points. A jet-boat trip or river cruise to the base of Huka Falls is brilliant. Walk there from Spa Park in Taupō and stop to bathe in the hot spring at Otumuheke Stream en route.

f you wish to combine Māori culture with the wonder of silica terraces and geothermal activity, then a visit to Wairākei Terraces should be high on the itinerary. This man-made design is a recreation of the original terraces that once existed at Wairākei and their beauty is striking. You can take an independent stroll along the walkway to marvel at the pink, blue and white cascading silica terraces but a guided tour is recommended. Stay and bathe in the soothing thermal pools. Craters of the Moon, part of the Wairākei geothermal field, has a 45-minute looped walkway which takes visitors past steaming craters, vents and fumaroles. It’s worth adding on another 20-minute walk to the upper lookout for views of this fantastic geothermal world attraction, run by a charitable trust.

F
or the daring, skydiving is a standout Lake Taupō experience – take in the sights from 4500m in the air, and have the time of your life while you’re at it! If you’re crazy enough to give it a go, you’re not alone – Taupō is one of the world’s most popular skydiving destinations.
Skydiving in Taupō © Taupō Tandem Skydiving
The adventurous can also plunge head first down into a canyon above a flowing river – also known, of course, as bungy jumping. Alternatively, tackling the challenges of a high ropes course will undoubtedly keep the blood pumping. For an awesome experience that’s less daring – yet still full of excitement – a scenic helicopter flight or gliding lessons won’t disappoint. These are great ways to see the region’s sights from a different perspective. The floatplane is a superb alternative, as is parasailing. You’ll be surprised just how much of the region you can see. So get elevated in Taupō – you’ll love the view!

Things to do in Taupo
Make a stop at TŪRANGI
Tongariro River © Destination Taupō
T
he region is one of the last true wild trout fisheries in the world and you can’t buy trout so you must fish for your dinner. Find a fishing guide or ask for advice at Tūrangi’s Visitor Centre, but make sure you get a fishing licence first. The Department of Conservation runs the Tongariro National Trout Centre, just 4km south of Tūrangi. Walk through the museum and learn all about trout, feed some in the aquarium and learn to fish. Find out about the endangered whio wildfowl and see them on site.
There are lovely walks from the centre along the banks of the Tongariro River. Watch out for trout and listen for birdlife as you wander in peace through beautiful native bush. Tūrangi is an ideal base for excursions into Tongariro National Park and is just 40 minutes from Whakapapa ski area on Mt Ruapehu. Nearby Kaimanawa Forest Park offers hunting and tramping, or take a walk around Lake Rotopounamu to see stunning scenery and tuneful bird life.

C
heck out the 14m high Māori rock carvings at Mine Bay on Lake Taupō. You can get to the artworks by boat or kayak, or take a helicopter flight. A team of artists spent four years on the works which were completed in 1980. For a different experience, you can learn all about prawns at Huka Prawn Park. Take a tour of the farm and then fish for prawns or try your luck at the Killer Prawn Hole-in-One Golf challenge. Nearby, make a beeline for the Huka Honey Hive where tastings will tempt you, as will
the variety of honey products. For wine buffs, Scenic Cellars is worth checking out. They share premises in Spa Road with The Merchant, the largest gourmet food store in the central North Island. Taupō also has mini-golf, quad biking and Segway rides, or you can take a horse trek. There are lots of hot pools in Taupō, and among the best are DeBretts Hot Springs and Spa, Wairākei Terraces and the AC Baths. For a free option, head to Otumuheke Stream at Taupō’s Spa Park for a soak in natural hot springs.

Ruapehu
BREATHTAKING MIX
Land of ice & fire Ruapehu
T NEW ZEALAND IS IN THE PACIFIC RING OF FIRE, AND MOUNTS RUAPEHU, TONGARIRO AND NGĀURUHOE ARE A TRIO OF ACTIVE VOLCANOES IN THE CENTRAL PLATEAU OF THE NORTH ISLAND.
S
ome of the purest natural beauty in New Zealand is found in Ruapehu’s two national parks – the UNESCO Dual World Heritage Tongariro National Park, and Whanganui National Park. Escape to Ruapehu and you’ll arrive in a landscape that is home to ancient rainforests, active volcanoes, sacred mountains, tranquil rivers and two national parks. With the country’s best one-day walk, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, three ski areas: Whakapapa, Tūroa and Tukino, plus scenic chair lifts at Mt Ruapehu, Tongariro National Park is truly a year-round adventure playground. Distinctly different, but just as impressive, the Whanganui National Park’s gorges, sheer papa (clay)
cliffs and waterfalls are accessible on foot, mountain bike, kayak or jet boat. The Whanganui Journey is one of New Zealand’s great walks (even though it’s a kayak trip) and it’s well worth taking the trip to the famous Bridge to Nowhere, which can be reached by jet boat and a short hike or on mountain bike. From the iconic Chateau Tongariro Hotel, to family friendly hotels and motels in Taumarunui, National Park, Whakapapa, Ōhakune and other towns, there’s a wide range of accommodation. They are all perfect bases for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, skiing, cycling, and the Whanganui National Park with its breathtaking and spiritual river. Something magical happens when you spend time in Ruapehu. You’ll leave feeling revitalised and uplifted and wanting to return soon.
COME RAIN, SHINE OR SNOW... Ski or snowboard down a volcano in winter, cycle The Timber Trail come spring and if it’s raining in autumn, head indoors to Waiouru’s National Army Museum. Summer is THE month for tackling the renowned Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Allow eight hours to tick this 19.4km mixed terrain walk off your list. The Emerald Lakes are worth every bunburning step of the ‘Devil’s Staircase’.

aumarunui, meeting place of the Whanganui and Ōngarue rivers, is an important place in Māori history, once providing important canoe transport routes.
Taumarunui is known for its farming, trout fishing, railway and forestry history, and is becoming more well known for the Forgotten World Adventures Rail Carts, The Timber Trail cycleway and adventures on the Whanganui River. It is also the northern gateway to the Tongariro National Park and many stunning walks and hikes. Mt Ngāuruhoe, Tongariro National Park © Getty Images
