5 WAYS TO MAKE THE MOST OF
Central North Island KAYAK TO AN ISLAND PARADISE Move over Thailand, picture-perfect paradise is no longer the realm of Ko Phi Phi. Instead, Whenuakura Island – also known as Donut Island – takes the crown for the most idyllic droplet of land. Located just one kilometre off Whangamata Beach, kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding through its 12-metre cave reveals a secret lagoon blessed with turquoise water, lush foliage and bright pōhutukawa trees. This tropical paradise is a wildlife sanctuary so visitors are advised to book with a guided tour and stay within their kayak to protect the flora. SWIM AT MCLAREN FALLS Lured by the promise of hot rocks to bask on, shallow pools to swim in and cascading water falls, you’d pay good money to enjoy such luxuries at a spa resort, but at McLaren Falls it’s all free of charge – compliments of Mother Nature. Located just a 10-minute drive outside of Tauranga, head towards the Kaimai Ranges and follow the road signs. It gets busy in summer but there are still plenty of sun-warmed ledges to lounge across, calm pools of water and rock faces to leap from. RELAX IN A GEOTHERMAL SPA IN ROTORUA DISCOVER BELCHING ROTORUA MUD It doesn’t matter if you’re four years old or forty, the gurgling, steaming landscape that is typical of Rotorua evokes imaginations of trolls and boggy goblins. A selfguided 90-minute walk around the world’s youngest geothermal valley, Waimangu Volcanic Valley, will introduce you to an otherworldly landscape of bubbling pools and a stench emitting from the Earth’s ancient bowels. Created during the eruption of Mt Tarawera in 1886, the entire park is gloriously uncrowded, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in this dramatic landscape.
SOAK UNDER A STARLIT SKY You know as soon as you step inside The Lost Spring Geothermal Pool and Day Spa that you’re in for a treat. The towels are fluffy, the service is five-star and the hot pools themselves are the result of 16,000-year-old waters bubbling 667 metres underground. You’ll feel like a deity stepping into these mineral-rich lagoons. On Friday and Saturday the spa is open until 9pm and come nightfall, the area is also aglow with subtle mood lighting. Lie back and relax; as steam evaporates around you, allow your gaze to follow its path skyward and admire the stars.
SAIL INTO THE SUNSET Join Sail Barbary for a relaxed sunset cruise on Lake Taupō. The yacht, which is as glamorous as it is eco-friendly, features huge white sails and an electric engine. Lounge on the deck or sink into a beanbag while the vessel glides across New Zealand’s largest lake. From hidden bays to enormous Māori rock art adorning the cliffs of Mine Bay, beauty is drenched in history. Weather Watch It’s important to know what’s happening with the weather. New Zealand’s weather is changeable and unpredictable; parts of the country are susceptible to cyclones, other parts to strong winds and heavy rain. Sudden drops in temperature can take you from hot days to cold nights, especially in spring and autumn, so be prepared. Carry extra clothing, rain gear, sun hats and sun block.

A 10-minute drive north is Kaiaua, nestled in the Hūnua Ranges foothills. PAEROA This is where the soft drink L&P (Lemon & Paeroa) is made. The Coromandel
WHAT’S IN A NAME? HMS Coromandel, the first European ship to bring settlers to the region, was named after India’s Coromandel Coast and the region came to take the same name. Local Māori called the Coromandel Peninsula, Te Tarao-te-Ika-a-Maui, or the barb of the fish of Maui. It is believed that Maui used the barb to catch a stingray which then became the North Island.

HITIANGA is a popular family holiday spot with sparking beaches, deep harbours and fresh seafood. The town centre is a relaxed haven with plenty to do and a fantastic range of restaurants and cafés. Striking Mercury Bay is replete with water activities, with seven great beaches for swimming, diving, banana boat rides, scenic cruises, fishing
charters or kayaking. Buffalo Beach is 3km of white sand and Lonely Bay is quiet and secluded. Find inner peace on a sailing trip to the Aldermen or Mercury islands. Activities on dry land include quad biking, golf, mountain biking, horse trekking, bone carving, mini-golf, and the museum. The Whitianga Scallop Festival, in September, is a week-long event of intensive shucking and eating. Take a short ferry ride from Whitianga to Ferry Landing, then walk to Cooks Beach via Front Bay and Flaxmill Bay (about 40 minutes each way). It’s a 12-minute drive from Ferry Landing
to wondrous Cathedral Cove, Hahei and Hot Water Beach. Everything in Whangamata is a dazzling shade of aqua blue or shimmering green. Retreat into lush forest, or surf, sail and swim at a sighinducing beach. Donut island, with its emerald lagoon, can be accessed via kayak and is still somewhat a secret. Waihi town has prospered from mining over the years but it’s the beach that really struck gold. With epic surfing waves and a long stretch of silky sand, it’s the jewel in an already glistening crown.

his huge arcing coastline was named the Bay of Plenty by Captain Cook after he saw local Māori with abundant supplies of food. hakatāne has a strong Māori heritage and you can experience the cultural traditions of New Zealand’s first people on guided tours here. Enjoy a hangi feast, visit a marae, pā site and learn a traditional Māori craft. Sunny Whakatāne is officially the
nation’s kiwi capital. Take a night tour to see the birds in their natural habitat, or tour wildlife sanctuary Moutohorā (Whale Island) and watch the largest colony of mutton birds in the country returning at night. ust 49km offshore from Whakatāne is active marine volcano White Island/Whakaari. The 2km-wide island is 321m above sea level so most of the volcano is hidden underwater.
Māori call it Te Puia o Whakaari which means dramatic volcano. Sulphur deposits have created a vivid yellow, green and orange crater landscape which is constantly changing. A new crater lake was formed after an eruption in 2000. Steam hisses from vents in the ground, pits bubble with sulphurous chemicals and temperatures can reach 800°. he first Polynesian canoes landed here followed by Captain Cook. This is rural heartland New Zealand, the land of explorers, ripe for adventure and paradise for visitors. Take a road trip ‘out east’ on the Pacific Coast Highway, SH 35, and be gobsmacked by the giant loop road which hugs the dramatic coastline for more than 300km. Beautiful scenery prostrates itself before you on this journey into Tairāwhiti, which translates as ‘the coast upon which the sun shines across the water’. This is a promised land of remote surf beaches, rocky headlands, beautifully
carved marae, historic churches and the red blooms of summer flowering pōhutukawa. This is a real corner of New Zealand, where community ties built on rural enterprise are strong and a love of the ocean is shared by all. Tractors on the beach, horse-back riding and fresh kaimoana for dinner – it’s all part of daily life in Tairāwhiti Gisborne. It’s likely for much of this journey you will have the road to yourself and generous amounts of sunshine. There is just one rule to keep in mind when travelling around the East Cape – take your time!

isborne is a prosperous and sunny port city boasting unspoilt beaches, a Mediterranean-style climate, and good cafés and restaurants. Modern-day New Zealand began when Captain Cook arrived here in 1769, landing on Kaitī Beach, making the first European contact with Māori. At the top of Kaitī Hill there is a statue of Captain James Cook, but controversy surrounds its authenticity. Some argue it bears little resemblance to the man. he deep flowing Waikato, New Zealand’s longest river, winds through the beating heart of the North Island. Rising on the eastern slopes of Mt Ruapehu in the Central Volcanic Plateau, the river navigates Lake Taupō and the Huka Falls before flowing northwest through the Waikato Plains. xperience Rotorua’s history and delve into Māori culture at the Buried Village, Mitai Māori Village, Whakarewarewa – the Living Thermal Village or Tāmaki Māori Village. Māori culture is an integral part of New Zealand society, and is central to life in Rotorua, which has one of the highest Māori populations in the country. The people of Te Arawa tribe first settled in the Rotorua region, becoming the original tour guides to the thermal attractions. The BLUE LAKE TRACK is a 90-minute walk combining forest, secluded beaches and stunning views of the Blue and Green Lakes, starting at the northeast corner of the Blue Lake Scenic Reserve.
The Whakarewarewa Forest is famous for its grove of towering redwood trees. The Redwood Memorial Grove track is the forest’s most popular walk, although there are great walking tracks ranging from 30-minute strolls to all-day treks. eautiful vast Lake Taupō is actually an immense volcanic caldera – or collapsed crater – created after the Oruanui Eruption 27,000 years ago. Lake Taupō, the biggest lake in Australasia and roughly the size of Singapore, is actually one of the world’s most formidable and active supervolcanoes. The Chinese and the Romans recorded seeing dramatic red skies, thought to be ash from the Taupō or Hātepe Eruption 1800 years ago. The region’s hot pools and springs are tell-tale signs of the magma chambers
sitting below this seemingly serene huge lake. To the south, in the Ruapehu district, lies the Tongariro National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the first area in New Zealand to be bestowed national park status. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a one-day walk across the central plateau, is one of New Zealand’s most popular hikes. The North Island’s tallest mountains can be seen from most areas in the region, but views of Mt Tongariro, Mt Ngāuruhoe
and Mt Ruapehu are particularly good on the Volcanic Loop, from Tūrangi on the eastern shores of Lake Taupō to National Park Village, Ōhakune and Waiouru, before circling back. Wherever you are in the region, there is a natural playground waiting for you right on the doorstep. Climb mountains, tramp, ski, snowboard, fish, mountain bike or opt for full-throttle action with a skydive, jet-boat ride, off-roading or a white-water rafting adventure. This region is truly nature’s ultimate playground.

rakei Kōrako, known as ‘the Hidden Valley’, is a stunning geothermal attraction 25 minutes north of Taupō and reached on a short ferry ride over Lake Ohakuri. It has 23 active geysers, more than any other geothermal field, and its fault-stepped sinter, silica terraces are also reported to be the largest of their kind in the world. Highlights of the valley include the Soda Fountain, Diamond Geyser, and Ruatapu Cave (sacred hole), which stretches 36m down to a hot pool named The Pool of Mirrors. Enjoy a coffee at the café and wander through the bush.

f you wish to combine Māori culture with the wonder of silica terraces and geothermal activity, then a visit to Wairākei Terraces should be high on the itinerary. This man-made design is a recreation of the original terraces that once existed at Wairākei and their beauty is striking. You can take an independent stroll along the walkway to marvel at the pink, blue and white cascading silica terraces but a guided tour is recommended. Stay and bathe in the soothing thermal pools. Craters of the Moon, part of the Wairākei geothermal field, has a 45-minute looped walkway which takes visitors past steaming craters, vents and fumaroles. The adventurous can also plunge head first down into a canyon above a flowing river – also known, of course, as bungy jumping. Alternatively, tackling the challenges of a high ropes course will undoubtedly keep the blood pumping. For an awesome experience that’s less daring – yet still full of excitement – a scenic helicopter flight or gliding lessons won’t disappoint. These are great ways to see the region’s sights from a different perspective. The floatplane is a superb alternative, as is parasailing. You’ll be surprised just how much of the region you can see. Make a stop at TŪRANGI

T
he region is one of the last true wild trout fisheries in the world and you can’t buy trout so you must fish for your dinner. Find a fishing guide or ask for advice at Tūrangi’s Visitor Centre, but make sure you get a fishing licence first. The Department of Conservation runs the Tongariro National Trout Centre, just 4km south of Tūrangi. Walk through the museum and learn all about trout, feed some in the aquarium and learn to fish. Find out about the endangered whio wildfowl and see them on site.
There are lovely walks from the centre along the banks of the Tongariro River. Watch out for trout and listen for birdlife as you wander in peace through beautiful native bush. Tūrangi is an ideal base for excursions into Tongariro National Park and is just 40 minutes from Whakapapa ski area on Mt Ruapehu. Nearby Kaimanawa Forest Park offers hunting and tramping, or take a walk around Lake Rotopounamu to see stunning scenery and tuneful bird life.

heck out the 14m high Māori rock carvings at Mine Bay on Lake Taupō. You can get to the artworks by boat or kayak, or take a helicopter flight. A team of artists spent four years on the works which were completed in 1980. For a different experience, you can learn all about prawns at Huka Prawn Park. Take a tour of the farm and then fish for prawns or try your luck at the Killer Prawn Hole-in-One Golf challenge. Nearby, make a beeline for the Huka Honey Hive where tastings will tempt you, as will
the variety of honey products. For wine buffs, Scenic Cellars is worth checking out. They share premises in Spa Road with The Merchant, the largest gourmet food store in the central North Island. Taupō also has mini-golf, quad biking and Segway rides, or you can take a horse trek. There are lots of hot pools in Taupō, and among the best are DeBretts Hot Springs and Spa, Wairākei Terraces and the AC Baths. For a free option, head to Otumuheke Stream at Taupō’s Spa Park for a soak in natural hot springs.
