reat deposits of glistening sand and unsullied beaches are all the rage up here. Coastal townships radiate with relentless positivity and sleepy communities are the very definition of laid-back loveliness. From great expanses of kauri trees to an enviable microclimate; green, lush and golden, Northland is refreshingly untouched, with water clarity to blow your mind and humble holiday baches offering million-dollar views. Slow motion mode starts as soon as you cross the border and the only haste required is getting here quickstep. Sooner you’re here, sooner you can make the most of it. 3

SAFETY FIRST Please don’t swim alone and take particular care at surf beaches. Rips are strong currents of water running out to sea; they are very dangerous for swimmers, but are difficult to identify. If the beach is patrolled by lifeguards, always swim between the red and yellow flags as they identify the safest area to swim.

COVID CASUALTIES While every care has been taken in the compilation of this guide, due to the pandemic there may have been changes since going to press. We advise you to
check before you visit any establishment mentioned in this guide, as they may be in hibernation, offering limited services or no longer open for business.
It’s important to know what’s happening with the weather. New Zealand’s weather is changeable and unpredictable; parts of the country are susceptible to cyclones, other parts to strong winds and heavy rain. Sudden drops in temperature can take you from hot days to cold nights, especially in spring and autumn, so be prepared. Carry extra clothing, rain gear, sun hats and sun block.
Be conscious that New Zealand’s UV is very strong. Always protect your skin from the sun. New Zealand’s official weather forecaster is MetService, available online, where you’ll find up-to-date information on localised areas, as well as specifically for marine and surf, mountains and parks. Local and national radio stations also regularly update weather predictions. Tune in on the car radio.

KAWAKAWA TO KAIKOHE Grade 1 and 2 cycling - easy Departing Kawakawa on the west of town, the cycle trail follows a route behind the Moerewa Freezing works. Moerewa is also known as ‘Motown’ or ‘Tuna Town’. Heading further inland through rural landscapes to Tuhipa suspension bridges the cycle trail is on a gradual incline to Kaikohe across rolling farmland. Before you reach Kaikohe you will pass the Kaikohe Aerodrome built in 1942 as a US Marines bomber base. Kaikohe is a medium size township with rich Māori and European heritage. Kaikohe is the hometown of Ngāpuhi.
KAIKOHE TO OKAIHAU Grade 1 and 2 cycling – easy Climbing gently west of Kaikohe on a disused railway corridor, the cycle trail climbs gently to the highest point at 280 metres above sea level. You will pass through an 80m curved rail tunnel built in 1915 before descending to Lake Ōmāpere. Despite reaching the highest point on the cycle trail – it is an easy grade 1 to 2 ride with ever changing views of native bush, farmland, streams and Lake Omapere.
OKAIHAU TO HOREKE Grade 2 and 3 cycling Okaihau, a small friendly township with great food before heading further west taking on the exciting Grade 3 downhill zig-zags, along the Utakura River to Snow’s Farm and picnic beside the river. Cycle through a rural setting passing marae which should be respected as ‘private property’ and carry on to a harbourside 1km boardwalk to Horeke. The cycle trail shares the road for a further 3km to Māngungu Mission House, or make advanced booking for the boat charter for a harbour crossing.
Trail Highlights • Suspension Bridges at Tuhipa • Rural scenery cycling through forests and farms • The Pioneer Village in Kaikohe – just 200m off the trail • Fire House Museum, accommodation, shops, eateries and activities • Newly upgraded Ngawha hot springs 6km from Kaikohe (off the trail)
Trail Highlights • Lake Ōmāpere – is of great cultural and environmental value to Māori • Summit of Kaikohe – with impressive views • 80-metre-long curved rail tunnel. Handy hint! Let your eyes adjust to the dark before entering the tunnel or dismount your bike and walk through it • A water ford close to Okaihau • Native Bush, farmland, streams & lakes

“
My top five must-do’s for visitors would have to be… • Whangārei Growers’ Market – on Saturday mornings, has fruit, veges, meat, fish, eggs, dairy, nuts, olive oils and plants on sale. There’s excellent coffee to keep you warm on a crisp morning and the adjacent bakery serves up mouth-wateringly good croissants.
• The Hātea Loop – an easy one-hour pedestrian circuit past waterfront cafés, outdoor sculptures and ramshackle boat sheds – popular with cyclists, runners, couples and families. You walk right past the brand new Hundertwasser Art Centre. • Gathered, a shop in the Town Basin, has a selection of gorgeous objects for your home or office.
Enjoying the best of both worlds, this is a place that shines with sunny, busy towns and a modern, marina-based city, while also maintaining the happygo-lucky vibes of a region soaking in sea, sun and sand.
• Drinks or dinner at The Quay on the waterfront. The food is great, the service is friendly and they have an excellent wine list. I enjoy sitting on the verandah beside the Hātea River, with a host of
Chief Executive, Hundertwasser Art Centre international yachts in the harbour. • Parihaka – an extinct volcano right in the heart of the city. It’s a former Māori pā site with exceptional views of the city, the harbour and of the surrounding districts. For a delightful day trip, head to Smugglers Bay at Whangārei Heads, which has one of the region’s most beautiful beaches. It has walking tracks, stunning views, bird life and an historic gun emplacement built during World War II, with a painting inside that shows the compass points in the harbour. Living in Whangārei is awesome. The area is attracting clusters of creative people who are skilled in the arts, technology, engineering and food tourism. I predict great things to come and can’t wait for New Zealanders to discover the Hundertwasser Art Centre.

My top five must-do’s for visitors? • Waitangi Treaty Grounds has to be my number one! With two museums, guided tours, cultural performances and historic buildings, there is enough to keep you engaged for a whole day. • Mangōnui – cute shops, great fish and chips and a waterfront filled with historic buildings. A bonus is all the nice beaches to stop at on the way. • Te Waiariki Ngāwhā Springs. Make sure to wear old togs and take a towel you don’t mind smelling like sulphur. The facilities have recently been redeveloped to better reflect the cultural significance of Nga Waiariki, as well as restoring and repairing the pools.
• Pompallier Mission and Printery is great if you love small tour groups and hands-on demonstrations.
Curatorial Manager, Waitangi Treaty Grounds • Ruapekapeka Pā – the last battle site of the Northern War is just of SH 1 north of Whangārei. It is worth a stop on your way south, once you’ve learned some history in the Bay of Islands. You might not have heard of it, but the Third Wheel Coffee Co in Paihia is a hidden gem. Freshly baked food, great coffee and a running total of all the disposable cups saved from the landfill by people bringing their reusable cups. I’m starting to feel hungry just thinking about The Gables in Russell. I have never had a bad meal there and the menu is varied. The Tohorā coffee and Baileys panna cotta is a particular favourite. For a delightful day trip, I recommend Waipōua Forest to see Tāne Mahuta. Make sure to read DOC’s guidelines for visiting the forest before you go; it is everyone’s responsibility to prevent the spread of kauri dieback disease. Living in the Bay of Islands is awesome because there is always something to explore. There are forests, beaches, historic sites, boat trips, wineries, markets – something for everyone..

emember when you were small and you’d draw pictures of the seaside? And it was all impossibly blue water bleeding into yellow sand and rolling green hills? Well, such an idyllic existence doesn’t solely exist in a child’s mind; it’s very real, very reachable and it’s called the Bay of Islands. Once you’ve finished goggling at these startling vistas, you’ll be inspired to jump in. Quite literally. You’ll also find no issue pursuing paragliding and big-game fishing, snorkelling and sea kayaking. Divers are also spoilt, with mile
after mile of rocky seabeds and two noteworthy shipwrecks. Take a cruise in the company of whales and dolphins, or sail to the world-famous ‘Hole in the Rock’ where your skipper will expertly navigate the wide vessel through a narrow gap. Active types can walk to serene Rainbow Falls or kayak up the Waitangi River to the thunderous Haruru Falls, whereas history buffs will enjoy Russell, namely for its fascinating, salacious past and the ancient Duke of Marlborough Hotel with its delightful, seafronting pub.

My top must-do’s for visitors: • Matauri Bay, a 30-minute drive from Kerikeri via the scenic east coast highway. Visit the monument to the Rainbow Warrior and if time is available get a scuba dive in. • Next it’s a two-hour jaunt to the end of the highway at Cape Rēinga. This windswept headland offers breathtaking views and is also nearby to Te Paki Giant Sand Dunes. • Ahipara. This is a west coast beach that is frequented by many locals. It’s a popular surf beach with options to hire a quad bike, skim on a sandboards, or sail a land yacht. Walk along the beach to Shipwreck Bay to spot some surfing action. You might not have heard of this one: Take a half hour out of your schedule to visit Mahinepua Beach and Mahinepua Peninsula Track which offers stunning views to Cavalli Islands. periods and is a 15-minute drive north of Matauri Bay. I’m starting to feel hungry just thinking about Spice Grill Indian Cuisine in Kaeo. The owner, Sarabjit Singh, offers traditional homestyle Northern Indian cooking with a good vege selection and occasionally a tasty goat curry. For a delightful day trip I recommend Karikari Peninsula. Visit Karikari Estate for lunch, wine tasting and sweeping views out to white-sand beaches. Enjoy a dip in the ocean at nearby Matai Bay and then stop at the Cable Bay Ice cream Store for a sweet treat on the way home. Living in Far North is awesome because there are no traffic lights! Time seems to slow down here, with no big city traffic jams, just kilometres of breathtaking coastline. I love that it’s relatively underdeveloped, with a raw natural beauty.

My top must-do’s for visitors would have to be:
Pick up a guidebook at Village Arts in Kohukohu.
• Seeing the Wairere Boulders in Hōreke
If you’re looking for a feed, Kai2Go in Kohukohu and the Boatshed Café in Rāwene are both excellent eating places.
• Visiting Māngungu Mission Station in Hōreke • Going to Manea Footprints of Kupe Cultural Centre in Ōpononi • Experiencing Ōpononi’s sand dunes • Cruising the Hokianga on the historic Ranui • Visiting Rāwene village I also recommend visitors take a walk around the Kohukohu Heritage Precinct to see properties built in the logging days of the late 1800s and early 1900s.
For a delightful day trip, I suggest Mitimiti Beach on the Hokianga coast, where you may see wild horses. The countryside on the way is stunning. Make sure you stop in Panguru to honour Dame Whina Cooper at her memorial and maybe have a drink at the pub there. Why not? Living in Hokianga is awesome because it is one of the last bastions of authentic New Zealand, with real people living in supportive communities. It’s a place where you can have some input into how your life works, a place where you can be yourself.

extraordinary pockets of Northland. Again, history is rich and potent here, with kauri featuring large in more ways than one. You’ll pass the many inlets and tributaries of New Zealand’s largest harbour, the Kaipara; a stop in Dargaville will provide the opportunity to learn the impact this harbour had on the region. Matakohe, at the southern end of this journey, is another essential stop to allow time for.

Te Whare Taonga o Tunatahi is a genuine treasure trove of the region’s history. From around 1880 to early 1900, Dargaville was the country’s busiest port so, along with kauri industry history, there is a wealth of marine history here.
