Taranaki’s coast is home to much more than just the surf. There are cosy cafés, art and craft studios and more, handily located in the towns along the route– Ōakura, Ōkato, Ōpunake and Manaia. Tap into the area’s rich history: explore Koru Pā, discover the history of the Cape Egmont Lighthouse, and visit shipwrecks and more as you pass through the distinctive landscape. Almost every road that heads towards the coast leads to a beach or surf break, with Ōakura and Ōpunake particularly popular beaches – both are patrolled bylifeguards over the summer months.
