Surf Highway 45 traces the Taranaki coastline from New Plymouth to Hāwera passing dozens of surf breaks, all under the watchful eye of Maunga Taranaki.

The Taranaki coast is home to much more than just the surf. There are funky cafés, art and craft studios and more, handily located in the towns along the route – Ōakura, Ōkato, Ōpunake and Manaia. Tap into the area’s rich history: discover the history of the Cape Egmont Lighthouse, visit shipwrecks and more as you pass through the distinctive landscape. Almost every road that heads towards the coast leads to a beach or surf break, with Ōakura and Ōpunake particularly popular beaches – both are patrolled by lifeguards over the summer months.
