ALUMNI ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY SCHOOL FALL 2012 NEWSLETTER Annual meeting and class reunions –to set the date for our next annual meeting. We decided to meet Saturday JULY 27th, 2013, Ramseyer Hall, Rm. 100. Please put this date on your calendar for next year.

Our annual meeting of June 30 2012 was certainly the most unusual one ever: our area had a violent storm the evening prior and locally most of Franklin county was without power and full of storm debris. Once we were able to arrive at Ramseyer Hall (luckily the University had it’s own power) maneuvering through traffic light-less intersections and downed trees, we had to search for parking since OSU decided to close the Arps parking garage for cleaning that day. Nevertheless, we had about 56 people in attendance and had a really great time. Members of the classes of 1952 and 1962 made up the preponderance of attendees along with special faculty guests, Bob White (who came in from Minnesota), Jim Stahl and Fred Schmeider.

Membership 2013 AAUS always starts its annual membership drive in the Fall. Membership is for a calendar year or there are Life ones available. Please read your insert about membership. If you did not receive an insert then you are either a Life member or your current membership is still good since several of you pay for several years at a time. We always welcome new members and certainly appreciate all of you for your continued support through memberships.

Farewells Agenda items included: -the formation of a committee to make recommendations for the reapplication of the University School Endowment Fund, with a report being due at the next annual meeting. -the formation of a two person committee to looking into a permanent photo display of University School life and achievements for the walls on the first floor of Ramseyer Hall. – the election of officers. All the present officers will serve again except we now welcome our new recording secretary, Carole Hardy Moyer, ’64.

After Mary Tolbert’s passing I received several tributes to her. A most memorable and moving one came in from Walli DePue, ’51. Please go to the AAUS website, (www.tosus.org) to read it in its entirety. We received this note from from Leslie Hauck ’64 after reading Walli’s article: “Oh! Steff... I've got tears in my eyes while and after reading that wonderful story that so perfectly encapsulates the philosophy of our precious school! So well-written that I couldn't stop for a second, and the life that ensued for Wallace DePue because of his encounter with those wonderful teachers is so heart-warming to hear about! I do love a good "bad kid goes good" story! Sadly, some of my clients are those former bad kids! but never got the support they needed to be their real selves... I've written about how I felt about those teachers for the N.L., and agree with you that they were a different breed, that they did love us; how we knew that we were highly respected. I wish my mother was still alive to I could prove to her that Miss Ort really existed, mentioned in his tribute; when I came home one day to say that there was a Miss Ort in the Art room, my mother laughed at me with sarcasm -- I must be deranged to create a new person out of Miss Orr!!!!”

Our deepest sympathies go to the friends and family of these new additions to our list: *Miriam “Debbie” Schottenstein Miller, ‘45 *Jack Rubin, ‘48 *Bruce Batchelor, ’39 brother of Richard Batchelor, ‘53 We also have lost some of our talented, wonderful faculty members who, along with their colleagues, gave us everlasting memories, friends, career paths, role models and just about everything else related to our most special University School experience.

We will have additional teacher tributes in upcoming issues. Please feel free to send us more tributes or memories. For the teachers/coaches/staff who are still with us, please never forget how much you still mean and meant to us. It was you who went that extra mile to shape us

facility and staff, but they were gracious through it all. We were scheduled to meet at University School for the annual meeting at 12:30. Though a bit late, Steffanie Haueisen gave us a nostalgic tour through the school, remembering the rooms and classes and commenting on the beautiful detailwork in the building. Then we were off to the OSU student union for a tour of that impressive facility. While touring, we learned that our evening program, originally planned for Holiday Inn, would instead be held at Champp’s, not quite what we had in mind, but they were willing to take us, thanks to the efforts of our leader, Harvey Minton. Again, we contacted everyone to let them know of the change. The sports bar was busy and noisy, but Champp’s had a long table reserved for us. Eventually, 38 people came, including spouses, significant others, kids, grandkids, siblings and friends. Again, we enjoyed each other’s company and a complimentary dessert. The Sunday morning brunch went off without a hitch as planned at J Liu. The food was delicious. A brief program was conducted by Harvey; several spoke of their memories of University School. We lingered over coffee and good-byes and voted to meet again in two years to celebrate our 80th birthdays. Throughout the festivities, Susan Starkey distributed memory books to those in attendance. Susan and Nancy had worked together to put the books together. The intrepid classmates attending were: Rick and Connie Ball, Lisa (Bobb) and Don Hardin, Dave and Jo Ann Foster, Joe and Gladys France, Marynelle (Drumm) Gale and son Steve, Paul Gayer, brother Keith and daughter Jennifer, Dwight and Mitty Hedrick, Bob Jacobs and fiancee Eva Corrigan, Nancy (Littlefield) Kewish, Ann (Vaile) Leatherman, brother George, sister-in-law Janitye, Harvey and Jane Minton, Jack Ohlemacher and friend Ellie Ditmer, Eleanor (Ogden) and Harry Poehlmann, Ginnie (Merryman) and John Schlitt, Fritz Schmidt and friend Rocco, Susan (Clark) Starkey, Dee and Pat Wheeler, David Walborn, Robb Wilson. Through the unplanned conditions, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and made the most of the situation. It was a reunion to remember.

into the productive adults we have become. Class of 1952 – 60TH Reunion (by Nancy Littlefield Kewish) After months of planning and preparation, the class of 1952 gathered for their 60th reunion June 29. The planning committee consisted of Lisa and Don Hardin, Harvey and Jane Minton, Dwight and Mitty Hedrick, Rick and Connie Ball, Susan Starkey and Nancy Kewish. Our base of operation was Worthington Holiday Inn where many out-of-towners stayed. The first event scheduled was a picnic at Highbanks Park, north of Worthington. A catered meal was planned by Rick Ball and Dwight Hedrick and their wives. About 5 o’clock, dark clouds appeared in the west and soon heavy rain and strong winds were making it impossible to even get to our cars and drive to the park. Some had already left and were traveling toward the park in near zero-visibility conditions. The rest of us waited at the hotel, hoping for a let-up. Soon the power went off, but the rain and wind diminished. Eventually we made our way to the picnic, carefully, since most traffic lights weren’t operating. Fortunately, we had reserved a large shelter and were protected from the rain and dripping trees. Robb Wilson had brought pottery bowls he had made, one for each classmate. We enjoyed each other’s company and the picnic, though some were discouraged from coming because of the storm. Apparently the power outage was extensive, as there was no electricity at the shelter. We wondered if it would be restored soon and what we would do for the rest of the weekend. Everyone wondered about their power status back home. At the hotel, the power was still off. We found our rooms in pitch-black hallways and unless one had a flashlight, little reading was done that night. Our morning brunch at La Chatelaine, scheduled for 9:30, was relocated because they had no power either. Fortunately, a Bob Evans on the east side of High St. did have power. We agreed to go there and tried to contact other classmates who were coming from elsewhere. (Aren’t cell phones wonderful?) Bob Evans did a great job of seating us in small groups. They were already mobbed with customers since they were one of the few open restaurants in the area, so to take on a group of 20+ strained their

Class of 1962- 50th Reunion

On Saturday, we all reunited for the annual AAUS meeting at noon in Ramseyer Hall (known to us as University School). It was great seeing folks from other classes (especially many 61, 63 and 64) and Paul Jacobs (60) helped keep the meeting lively with his humor. We all gathered for the obligatory class picture on the front steps (outside the rotunda) and then went back inside for a tour of the building. Rick Morris announced that folks from the Class of 62 could not leave the meeting room until we came up with a plan for the evening, since our buffet dinner was cancelled due to a lack of electricity at the Holiday Inn kitchen. Jane Taylor suggested a patio party at the Holiday Inn with food from the Kroger deli and the remaining finger food and beverages from Hal’s/Jill’s and Dick’s from the previous evening. All agreed. The substitute Patio Party at the Holiday Inn Worthington on Saturday afternoon and evening, with Rick Morris’ “oldies” music in the background on his iPod and amplifier, made for a wonderful reunion. Many classmates again met for a farewell breakfast on Sunday morning at the Holiday Inn. Our reunion was, and will continue to be, an event to remember because of the outstanding participation and the improvisation caused by the weather. Everyone agreed to meet again in five years.

(by Hal Pepinski, Dick Baker, Rick Morris, John Jacobs) What a GREAT reunion of the Class of 62 --50 years and counting. We spent over a year contacting our 48 known classmates, of whom 33 graduated from University School in June, 1962. We connected with 39 and 4 have passed from this life. We had a web site to provide reunion information that grew in content to include graduation pictures of nearly every classmate, current pictures submitted for a “Then and Now” page, scanned pages from the 1962 Yearbook, and some short writings of “Memories”. Additionally, we agreed to electronically submit short autobiographies to be distributed before the reunion via email to all known classmates (not for publication elsewhere). These autobiographies of the 50 years since our graduation allowed us to read about each other before the reunion, and thus spend our limited reunion time remembering our years together at University School. Also, for about nine months prior to the reunion, a group of Columbus area classmates met regularly at P.K. O’Ryan’s in Worthington to discuss and plan the reunion activities. Attending the reunion were 24 of the 30 living members of the graduating class and 4 other classmates. The activities were centered around Worthington OH where Dick Baker arranged room discounts at the Holiday Inn (also the location for the scheduled buffet dinner on Saturday night). The first event was on Friday afternoon at the home of Hal Pepinsky & Jill Bystydzienski in Rush Creek Village (Worthington). The weather was VERY hot and VERY humid, but we were overjoyed by seeing so many classmates and Coach Bob White and his wife Shirley, and Fred Schmeider and his family. Jill and Hal had a wonderful spread of finger food and beverages. The very hot and very sticky weather suddenly changed --- a savage storm arrived that wrecked Central Ohio and caused an electrical blackout that lasted over a week for some people. The storm quickly reduced the temperature by 30 degrees so our activities continued outdoors. Our classmates moved on to our second scheduled event at Dick Baker’s home (also in Rush Creek Village) where we continued to reacquaint and reminisce over pizza and beverages. The events went on, but with no electricity (there were candles in the bathrooms).
