Hong Kong’s job opportunities are unevenly distributed. More than 70% of all employment places are clustered in the metropolitan area, which leads to long commuting times, especially for people living in the New Towns across the territoy.

At the same time, economic and technological changes, and the ongoing integration and development of the Greater Bay Area, are invoking changes in the nature of the industries based in Hong Kong. Entrepreneurialism, supported by education, local industries and social infrastructure has the potential to drive innovation and progress in local businesses and communities.

This chapter explores urban design aspects related to the planning and development of local economies, asserting that a vibrant mixture of live, work and recreational activities are a vital condition to support inspiring, productive and inclusive neighourhoods.
