NEW TERRITORIES TOMORROW
With the global outbreak of Covid-19, the link between urban design and health is at the centre of debates amongst academics and practitioners. Hong Kong’s limited living space, and public open spaces have highlighted the difficulties in providing sufficient recreational spaces in high-density cities.
This chapter explores planning and design strategies to incorporate mobility solutions and spaces that prioritize active and healthy lifestyles, and examine their impact on local environments and neighbourhood qualities. Using Hong Kong’s existing New Towns as case study sites, it is argued that improved design guidelines should not only affect new developments, but can also be used to upgrade existing urban areas.
