NEW TERRITORIES TOMORROW

Since the 1970s, Hong Kong’s expansion and urban development has resulted in a series of New Towns, which can be classified in four generations. While the first generation was conceived as self-contained towns with local employment, cultural facilties and civic buildings, the most recent planning strategy focuses on ‘New Development Areas’ (NDA), of which some are extensions of existing new towns or settlements. While the planning model of the NDA’s has evolved over time, it is still strongly influenced by the Modernist legacy of ‘Rational City Planning’.

This chapter explores research and speculative design projects around the notion of a new generation of New Towns for Hong Kong, adressing issues such as social and economic sustainability, societal changes, environmental impact and resilience, and the changing emphasis on sustainable transport and mobility solutions.
