ISSUE 02: OPPORTUNITIES AT THE BORDERLANDS

With the rapid development of the Greater Area, New Towns in Hong Kong’s Northern New Territories such as Tin Shui Wai and Hung Shui Kiu can benefit from their geographic advantage and transport connectivity. As Shenzhen has developed along the coast line from east to west, Shenzhen Bay becomes the potential focus point of a new collaborative urban region.

Located along the ‘Western Development Corridor’ in the “Hong Kong 2030+” development plan, the New Territories North (NTN) area will receive several major new infrastructure connections in the future.

The Shenzhen Bay area already has mutual beneficial relationships, in the form of economic ties and commuter flows, for instance for Shenzhen students attending schools in Hong Kong. Further strategic exchange can be envisioned, for instance to take advantage of lower housing costs in Shenzhen, or access to country parks in Hong Kong (research by Zheng Yixin and Zhang Yueting).
