PRIDE MONTH

‘m happy the year is half over now. Soon, it’ll be Christmas time again, the most wonderful time of the year! But before that, my birth month will arrive. I’m so excited for July! Marami pang magagandang katangian, actually, that we possess that we can contribute to the world, the universe, rather, to make it a better place to live in. Sa kahit ano’ng propesyon ay kaya natin mamayagpag dahil sa ating pagsusumikap, sipag at tiyaga, but we must always be humble. Tulungan n’yo sila. Tama na ang pangungurakot! Kumota na naman kayo, for sure! On a lighter note, it’s another beautiful and siksik na issue of Celebrity Radar magazine that we are

CONGRATS, CLARITA!

Guests, including celebrities like Shaina Magdayao, watched the preem of Jodi Sta. Maria’s latest film. Clarita (the name of her cha racter who was possessed by demons back in 1953) was helmed by Derick Cabrido, produced by Black Sheep, Clever Minds, and Purple Pig. At the premiere, everyone got goosebumps and screamed. Jodi’s mother can’t even choose her favorite scene, because she likes the entire movie. She’s all praises, not only for Jodi’s acting, but for everyone in the cast, including Arron Villaflor, Alyssa Muhlach, Ricky Davao, and Romnick Sarmenta. This will be Jodi’s last movie for this year, because she will con centrate first on her current primetime teleserye on ABS-CBN which is Sino Ang May Sala?: Mea Culpa. The actress will also coproduce (with Dreamscape) and star in a new digital series for iWant. In October, she’ll study film and TV producing in New York, USA where she will be on her own. Chances are, she will be spend ing the holidays there and will ask her son, Thirdy, and mom to follow her. Congratulations on the success of Clarita, Jodi! H

GO, JIMUEL!

Jinkee Pacquiao is so proud of her and Manny’s el dest son, Jimuel, as he was launched as the newest BNY image model. The management of BNY Jeans Phils, headed by Denise Villanueva, was happy to welcome Jimuel as the latest addition to their gro wing roster of celebrity endorsers. He joins Joshua Garcia, Barbie Forteza, Ryle Santiago, Gab Lagman, Markus Paterson and Heaven Peralejo, Jimuel’s girl friend. Heaven is so lucky to have him as a boyfriend, because Jimuel is not only good-looking, but he’s also a humble and God-fearing young man. H

ISANG NATATANGING SANDALI The moment that made everyone cry at the 35th PMPC Star Awards for Movies was the giving of special awards to various veteran stars. Among the awardees were Ramon Revilla, Sr., Gloria Romero, Tirso Cruz III, Christopher de Leon, Philip Salvador, Niño Muhlach and the late Eddie Garcia who passed away on June 20. They were named Mga Natatanging Bituin ng Si glo in celebration of the 100 years of Philippine Cine ma. These legends truly deserve this recognition. These movie icons became very emotional when they re ceived their awards. Other recipients, like Vilma Santos, Joseph Estrada, Susan Roces and Nora Aunor were not able to come to the event due to prior commitments. It was indeed a highlight of the program. Mabuhay ang PMPC at ang Pelikulang Pilipino! H 4 | CELEBRITY RADAR

MICKEY’S ARTISTRY

Not everyone knows Mickey Ferriols is a painter as well as an actress—and a very good one! Like her, all of her artworks are so nice and pretty! Her very first solo art exhibit titled “Introspection” (held at the Secret Fresh Gallery in Ronac Art Center on Ortigas Avenue Extension in San Juan City last June 9 to 20, 2019) was well-attended by her dear family and friends. Mickey’s parents and son, Brent, are proud of her, and so are we at Celebrity Radar. Mickey, you de serve more exhibits for the public to see the beauty of your artistry. H

JOHN DID GOOD

Seasoned actor John Estrada did a good job in portraying the role of the late Mayor Antonio Halili of Tanauan, Batangas. His assassination was dra matized in The Last Interview: The Mayor Antonio Halili Story. This movie was shown a month ago. Other celebrities who celebrated the late mayor’s life in this film were Ara Mina, Phoebe Walker as Sweet (the daughter of Mayor Halili), who is now the mayor-elect of Tanauan, and Juan Miguel So riano. This movie was written, produced and di rected by broadcast journalist Ceasar Soriano. H

OH, MY OFW!

Keep an eye out for OFW The Movie, produced by Active Media Events Production and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), direct ed by Neal “Buboy” Tan. It stars Sylvia Sanchez, Rafael Rossel, Christian Vasquez, Dianne Medina, Regine Angeles, Helga Krapf, Kate Briones, Mark Neumann, Dave Bornea, Kakai Bautista, and newbie actor Uno Santiago. This inspiring movie focuses on the hardship and success of our unsung heroes, our fellow Filipinos who work in different parts of the world to be able to help their own families. H

FINALLY FOUND

Finding You, a deeper kind of love story, which starred Jane Oineza and Jerome Ponce in the lead roles alongside Barbie Imperial, Claire Ruiz and Jon Lucas, was produced by Regal Entertainment. It was the first ever directorial job of Easy Ferrer, who graduated from UP Film Institute in 2014. Prior to his big break as a film director, Easy had tried his hand at practically every job in showbiz. Luckily, he finally found his calling as a director. Easy was quite overwhelmed with the support of the pub lic, other celebrities (like Donny Pangilinan, Elmo Magalona, Albie Casiño, Heaven Peralejo and RK Bagatsing), as well as all his family and friends. Even the girlfriend of Jerome, vol leyball star Mika Reyes, came to watch it! H

Chicago based Filipino singer Nick Vera Perez was recently in the country for a homecoming event held at Rembrandt Hotel in Quezon City to announce that he will be staging his first concert here in Manila next year. Nick dreams of perform ing with his idols, music icons Ogie Alcasid and Martin Nievera. Apart from being a singer, Nick also manages aspiring Filipino singers under his NVP 1 World talent agency that has a branch here and he has staff to take care of them. Not only that, he is a philanthropist as well. He put up a foundation to help his fellow Filipinos, because he knows how hard life is here in the Philippines. Nick even honored the entertainment media during his press conference by giving them a medal. When he comes back in 2020, the kind-

Sotto at Joey de Leon, madalas siyang pinaglalaruan. Sobrang mas nauna pa sa gay guy and straight fag hag friendship sitcom na “Will and Grace” ang “It’s A Deal” na pinagbibidahan dati nina Michael de Mesa at Alma Moreno.

Pang-good time at play time.

The dearly departed Eddie Garcia

Puting Kuting”.

Pa-LAROng Pam-BAKLA

Given the challenges facing the LGBT community all over the world, it’s only right that we bring back one of the best plays ever staged about the gay life. Learn about the revival of Floy Quintos’ Laro in this special feature. TEXT BY ALWIN IGNACIO

Callboy. Dexter Santos at Andoy Ranay bilang Pulis. Si Peter Serrano bilang She Male. Julienne Mendoza bilang Manggagamit. I became the project manager of Sir Floy Quintos’ book launch by accident. Sir Floy was at the Dulaang UP office planning it, and I couldn’t remember why, but I happened to be there too. He asked me, ‘Are you doing anything right now? Do you want to help me with this book launch? Be my Emily?’ That was a reference to the film The Devil Wears Prada. Being a huge fan of him and his work, I immediately agreed. That same day, I went to a meeting with the organizers from the Ateneo de Manila University Press. I became his Emily and he became my Miranda, and up to this day, I still call him that.” Patuloy na paglalahad ni Direk Yap: “There were two volumes of the Collected Plays and of all the plays, I’ve seen all of them except Atang and Laro. During the launch, excerpts of the featured plays were read by some of the Quintosian actors and actresses. I was really captivated by the reading of the last scene of Laro. I still remember Jomari Jose, who played the Kalaguyo in the 2004 staging, was the Call Boy and the great Leo Rialp was the Pilantropo.

Immediately after the launch, I read the entire script of Laro and was deeply moved by it.” “Just like Sir Floy, I’ve always loved Arthur Schnitzler’s La Ronde,” pag-amin nito. “However, Sir Floy’s adaptation was even more interesting. Instead of heterosexuals, he made all the characters male and it’s now set in present-day Manila, instead of Vienna in the 1890s. I first read the play in 2014 and I felt so sad because 10 years have already passed since Sir Floy wrote the play but a lot of things in our society still haven’t changed. That day, I told myself that I want to stage it one day.” Salaysay pa niya: “In 2016, I first worked with Artist Playground as a graphic designer. I’ve done posters and publicity materials for them for several productions already. In one of our encounters, Paul Jake Paule and Sir Roeder Camañag talked to me and said that I should direct for their company. I was honestly very hesitant since I’m more known in the industry as a stage manager. I think it was sometime last year when I talked to them again and said that I’m finally ‘accepting’ the challenge. I told them that I want to direct Laro, since it has been my dream for years already.” Sabi pa niya: “Things fell into place since a Pride Festival that was supposed to happen at Arts Above didn’t push through so they agreed to mount this production together with Roses for Ben for Pride Month.” Ang pagkakaiba nito sa orihinal ay: “Personally, I don’t know much about the original run since it was staged in CELEBRITY RADAR | 11

2004. I didn’t see it since I was a minor back then. I’ve only seen some photos and read some notes from Sir Floy and some of the original cast. Because I haven’t seen the play’s original run, I just treated this like an entirely new production. Of course, this staging will have a new set of actors. I’m really honored to have some of our most talented actors come together for this project. Working for different theater companies for the past decade has really connected and introduced me to a lot of people.” Pagtatapat niya pa: “Luckily, I was able to use the ‘friendship card’ to convince them to join me in this endeavor. The design elements of this staging is also different: set design by Io Balanon, costume design by Nicolo Perez, lighting design by Miggy Panganiban, sound design by Arvy Dimaculangan, graphic design by Gian Nicdao, and movement design by JM Cabling. I really get by with a little help from my friends.” Ang pinakamalaking pagsubok niyang hinarap bilang director? Sagot ni Yap: “My biggest challenge was really understanding these characters. These 10 complex characters who come from different walks of life but are broken in their own way. Luckily, with the help of my talented actors, we were able to discuss and create the back stories of these characters and make them as real as possible. They’re very grounded in reality, so we really tried our best to let that be seen on stage.” Hand picked pala ang bagong cast. Chika ni John Mark: “I wanted to hold open auditions for this, but Sir Roeder and Paul Jake suggested that I should just personally invite actors I wanted. Working for various theater companies and productions for the past decade and watching a lot of shows as well really helped me see the strengths and weaknesses of all these actors. I approached friends like Paul Jake Paule (Pulis), Phi Palmos (Drag Queen), Gio Gahol (Manggagamit), MC Dela Cruz (Kalaguyo), Jon Abella and Vincent Pajara (Manunulat) and Ross Pesigan (Estudyante) because I know they’ll be able to give justice to their respective roles. I even thought of them when I read the play again last year. After that, I started to message more people to ask if they’re interested. After so many rejections, my cast was slowly becoming complete. Only the role of Modelo had a casting call or special audition since it was really hard to cast someone who looks like a model, can act, and is willing to wear only underwear on stage. Good thing I was able to get in touch with Jonathan Ivan Rivera and Jay Gonzaga (Modelo) and they both 12 | CELEBRITY RADAR

agreed to alternate for the role.” Para kay direk John Mark, makabuluhan ang play kasi: “Laro is still very relevant because the issues and themes discussed in the play such as sexual predation and power play are still very prevalent nowadays. “It’s been 15 years since this play was written yet nothing has really changed. Fifteen years is a long time and we should have evolved as human beings but I guess it’s just a never-ending cycle. It’s quite alarming to be honest that the LGBT community is still experiencing the same challenges they did more than a decade ago. Also, since June is Pride Month, it’s the best time to stage a play about the Manila gay community. On top of that, it’s something that a lot of people can really relate to. This is our story and it needs to be told. That’s why people need to see this, whether they’re gay or not.”

K-Pop

Be Like BTS

Korean group BTS have become worldwide sensations. Every Asian act dreams of achieving what they have. But how can Filipino bands and solo artists make it internationally? Two fans, a former record exec and an OPM star weigh in.

I

n the weeks that followed after I published my last piece on the rookie group Tomorrow x Together, I’ve fallen deeper into the rabbit hole that is the world of K-Pop.

I’ve spent countless hours looking for videos of my favorite groups. While watching BTS perform on the 2019 Billboard Music Awards (where they sang their hit “Boy with Luv” alongside singer-songwriter Halsey), I thought of something that made me feel so sad and wistful I nearly burst into tears. I thought, “Korean artists are making waves all over the world with songs written in their native language. They’re performing on American shows and charting on Billboard. Why can’t Filipino artists do the same? It can’t be because we’re not talented, because we actually are. People from other countries always talk about how Filipinos dance and sing well. So what’s keeping Filipino artists from achieving the same kind of global success that Korean artists have achieved?” In an attempt to answer that question, I talked to two K-pop fans, a former record label executive, and two recording artists who are doing their best to push the envelope as far as OPM is concerned. Here’s what they said.

A FAN’S PERSPECTIVE

According to BTS fan Ivana Joyce Cabatbat, she thinks K-pop fans have a lot to do with their idols’ global success. “International fan culture for K-pop artists usually depend on the fan translators 14 | CELEBRITY RADAR

TEXT BY JULIAN MAURICIO for content. Filipino artists don't have that. Also, BigHit releases official English translations on their MVs, so it became easier for international fans to relate to their songs. I think I've seen other artists from other companies follow suit,” she says. Ivana Joyce also thinks that most Filipino artists tend to stick to a certain style of music that isn’t quite what global audiences are looking for. The music they make resonates with Filipinos, but not with the rest of the world. “I think Filipino artists are just as ta lented, but the music style is different. I feel like for the longest time, our culture celebrates birit kings and queens? Like, how Moira dela Torre was good when she joined The Voice of the Philippines, but she didn't win. She got eliminated quite early if I remember correctly. It's only now that people think her style is cool. Also, I feel like K-pop quickly tries to emulate global trends. In the Philippines, no artists really try to do so. To be honest, I feel like if you try to do something like that here, you'll be branded as trying hard? Remember when they tried to make ‘P-Pop’ a thing? Most of the people I know think it's cringey,” she adds. She thinks it’s not so much about the language barrier as it is about a lack of substance in the songs today’s OPM artists release. She opines that achieving global success isn’t just a matter of going for it with guns blazing. Ivana Joyce says thay in order to succeed internationally as BTS did, Filipino artists need to have something innovative and meaningful to offer the international music scene. She says that’s what BTS did when they released songs about finding your purpose

in life and struggling with issues like depression, which people can relate to. “When I was in Korea last year, a local uncle approached me and asked where I'm from. When I said Philippines, he sang ‘Anak’ by Freddie Aguilar, saying we have great songs and singers here. The sentimentality, the emotions...I feel like a lot of our songs lack that nowadays. I mean, BTS didn't succeed in the US because they were gunning for the top of the Billboard charts. They wanted to deliver a message, their message, and luckily it resonated with people from all around the world.” One of Ivana Joyce’s friends, who requested anonymity, says that most Filipino artists will have a hard time succeeding in the international music scene because of how they approach their craft. “Walang training dito. Walang new techniques. Walang willing mag-spend for art. It's always the same old thing, repackaged lang. Wala rin kasing way yung ibang independent artists to bring their music to the general public kasi walang nag-iinvest sa kanila,” she says. She also thinks that the OPM industry doesn’t have its priorities in order. If she could give Filipino artists and record executives advice, she would tell them to find out why Filipino music lovers are gravitating to K-pop, and use what they learn to better themselves. “Yung priority kasi dito is what can sell agad. For example, laging actors and actresses ‘yung binibigyan ng album imbis na yung mga singers who have been

training since they were kids. If you like music from other countries, sisitahin ka nila. Sa sabihin nila na you should listen to OPM. They’ll ask us, ‘Why don’t you support your own?’ They don't ask themselves bakit hindi namin hindi sila tinatangkilik? Just because we're from the same country doesn't mean na we're obligated to support them. Why not take it as a challenge to do better? To discover new sounds and styles? Hindi nila tine-take as constructive criticism.”

appearances on avenues that again are aligned to their branding.” Spoken like a true record label executive. She has a point, doesn’t she?

ARTISTS’ PERSPECTIVE

AN EXECUTIVE’S PERSPECTIVE

After speaking to Ivana Joyce and her friend—who at the time of our interview were getting ready to fly to South Korea for BTS’ anniversary concert—I got in touch with Ms. Annabelle RegaladoBorja, a colleague of mine from my days at ABS-CBN. Ms. Annabelle used to be at the helm of Star Music, the Kapamilya network’s in-house record label. In that capacity, she has worked with a lot of OPM artists and shaped the industry as we know it. She has also had dealings with some Korean entertainment companies, which is why I thought to interview her for this piece. Ms. Annabelle is now living in the land Down Under with her family, where she spends her days teaching music, but she graciously agreed to answer my questions. “K-pop is conquering the world. It crosses over to different nations and across ages. Personally, I’m not a K-pop fan but my music students are. They are the primary market. They are fans of Blackpink, BTS, EXO, Got7 and Twice. I believe K-pop attracts the millennials because of the colourful music videos, the fashionable and good looking singers, and of course, the music. K-pop has lyrical hooks and repetitive music, thus the easy recall and causing the market to have a Last Song Syndrome or LSS effect,” she says. Ms. Annabelle has worked with some Korean agencies before, and she says that allowed her to understand why Kpop artists have an edge when it comes to achieving international success. “Based on my previous dealings with people in the K-pop industry, such as JYP Entertainment and YG, also with SBS Korea, they told me all about the tedious

training their artists have to undergo before they are considered ready to face the public. In Korea, artists train for five to ten years before they are ready for stardom. Their training involves emotional, musical, physical, and psychological preparation. Branding and packaging are carefully crafted. All of that gives K-pop artists an edge,” she explains. Ms. Annabelle believes Filipino artists have what it takes to be as successful on the world stage as Korean artists. However, she says that relying on talent alone won’t be enough. Filipino artists have to be backed up by a team of people who can make all the right moves to help them go global. “I’m certain that Filipinos are musically talented and excellent. But talent is just one ingredient. If they want to succeed consistently in the international market like the Koreans, we Filipinos need to support our artists with an equally creative and disciplined team which will focus on different aspects of their careers. “We Filipinos need to train our artists for years if we want them to become superstar groups or soloists. We need music producers who’ll compose sure hits songs for the artists that are aligned to their brands. Speaking of which, we also need branding and marketing experts who can work together to design a career vision for our artists. Lastly, we need a good distribution team who can effectively position the exposure and release of the artists’ songs and the artists’

The last person whose brain I picked for this piece is a close friend of mine who has risen to the top of the OPM heap since he released his hit single “Dahil Sa ‘Yo” in 2016. When I texted Iñigo Pascual, he was doing a promo tour in the US, where he hit up several American media outlets and performed for soldout crowds in different cities. However, he made time to air his thoughts on Kpop vs. the OPM scene. “I think K-pop is a game changer. They took entertainment and gave it a whole different look, meaning, presence and sound. The world of K-pop seems colorful and simple, but in reality it’s much more intense and intricate than what us outsiders see. I personally am a big fan of K-pop. Some of my favorites are Blackpink, BTS, EXO, and Got7,” Inigo says. Inigo was drawn to K-pop because he saw it as an industry built on certain values that he approves of. As he got deeper into K-pop, however, he couldn’t help but compare it to the OPM scene. “The discipline and extraordinary concepts and ideas behind K-pop are really what sets them apart. I even came to a point when I questioned why we haven’t achieved what they have, when we clearly have amazing music and talent in our country,” he admits. After doing some thinking, Iñigo realized a couple of things, which he shared with Celebrity Radar. “I think one of the biggest factors behind the rise of K-pop is the support of their government, which we lack. K-pop is partly funded and supported heavily by their government, which results to a lot of tourists visiting and Korea’s GDP and GNP to increase greatly and rapidly. “Another factor is how hard they train their talents before putting them out there, or in K-pop terms, ‘debuting’ them. In the Philippines we barely train our artists. We only train them to the point that we can say ‘OK na ‘yan, puwede na isalang,’ which is sad.” Iñigo also says the OPM industry should invest in fresh talent. He also believes that it’s time Filipino artists broke new ground. “We should also support new choreographers, directors, producers, and writers who are as hungry as the artists. People who want to create great content, not just because of their stature or background. We must think inside, outside and around the box and change its shape.”

CONCLUSION

All of the people I interviewed—Ivana Joyce and her friend, Ms. Annabs, and Iñigo—made some really valid points. I actually agree with most of what they said. The OPM industry can’t keep doing the same old things if it wants its artists to be like BTS—a group that’s breaking records and changing the world with their unique brand of music, all while remaining distinctly Korean. Filipino artists should figure out how to shake things up in order to succeed internationally, without losing what makes them truly Pinoy. H CELEBRITY RADAR | 15

Celebrity Home

Blessed and humbled After more than a decade in the industry, Yasmien Kurdi shows off the fruits of her labor—namely her family and brand-new condo unit, where she spends most of her time when she’s not in front of the camera. TEXT BY ALEX BROSAS

Y

asmien Kurdi’s condo unit is a breath of fresh air, because she and her husband Rey were able to show how modern living can be achieved by a pair of young professionals like them. Since their taste in décor is more on the minimalist side, Yasmien and husband Rey maximized the available space in their condo for their own benefit. Every nook and cranny of the place is properly utilized. “After getting married, we lived together in a condo unit in Taguig City for six years. It was our first home and we made a lot of fond and happy memories in that place. We had Ayesha there, and she loved the neighborhood because she made a lot of friends. We decided to move to a house so we could have a bigger place because we are planning to have a new baby soon, if God permits,” Yasmien shared. The Kapuso actress has been married for seven years but she and her husband have been together for 13. “He is an airline pilot. We met in the plane when he was still working as a cabin crew for his previous airline. I was his passenger quite a few times back in the days when I used to do out of town shows. We started to talk only on our third flight but due to a slight argument. The rest is history. Well, we ended up falling for each other and dated each other for six years before we got married.” Although they can afford one, the couple didn’t hire a professional interior designer to decorate their condo. We basically just want storage, lots and lots of storage for our things. We don’t like to see clutter. You know how it is to live in a condo. Your space is very limited. Although Rey and I are minimalists, 24 | CELEBRITY RADAR

we can’t help having so much stuff in our house since Ayesha came along.” Yasmien considers the dining area her and husband Rey’s favorite nook. “Aside having our meals there, it is also our study place and bonding area. Ayesha does her Arts and Crafts while Rey and I do our editing and studies there and of course, we do watch Netflix there.”

Even though she’s quite busy these days, Yasmien helps keep her house squeaky clean. “Yes, I do clean the house from time to time. Iba pa rin kung ikaw ang naglilinis ng bahay mo,” she said. Does she have any advice on how to keep or maintain your house nice, free from pests and last for many years? “My advice is just to enjoy your place. A well-maintained place is good; but whatever you have, it is there for you all to enjoy it. Your kids should enjoy your place too, it is the good memories they’ll make there that makes the place special. These are the things that last for many years.” The couple had just moved to a bigger house but they so love their condo unit that they’re keeping it. In the future, they wanted to have a rest house. “We just moved to a bigger house late last year. But we couldn’t help being so sentimental about our condo. That’s the reason why we didn’t have it rented. We still spend some nights there.” As parents, Yasmien and Rey are like “barkada.” We want our daughter to be as open to us as possible. ‘Yung tipong kung ano man ‘yung nasa isip niya, ‘yung pananaw niya o opinion niya ay nasasabi niya sa amin,” she said. Inside the house, the couple only has one rule for their daughter. Bawal siya magsulat sa wall.

CELEBRITY RADAR | 25

Very erratic kasi ang schedule namin. Very important kasi kay hubby ang sleep before his work.” Having more kids is welcome for the couple as they believe that “the more, the merrier.” When Yasmien returned to television, she earned plaudits for her performances. “Last year I did Hindi Ko Kayang Iwan Ka, where I got recognized as Best Drama Actress in the PMPC 32nd Star Awards for Television and Outstanding TV Actress of the Year at the Laguna Excellence Awards 2019. This year I did Hiram Na Anak, and Download Mommy of Daig Kayo Ng Lola Ko, a Mother’s Day special for the month of May.” It has been more than a decade since she joined the reality search that jumpstarted her career. Yasmien is very grateful for all the breaks she has received, and gives it all back to the one above. “I thank God for all the blessings he has given me. This is so much more than I deserve, and I am very much humbled, and I offer this all for His glory,” she says. H

Sweater Weather

As we say hello to the cold and rainy season, we say hi na rin sa clothes na bagay sa tag-lamig! Anyway, if you need inspo for your next sweaterweather outfit, we’ve got what you’re looking for right here. TEXT BY BOY GEORGE

Choose printed and bold jackets para may karakter ang OOTD mo, like Laureen Uy’s super bold tiger-print Gucci jacket and joggers! (Image from @laureen on Instagram)

HYPEBAES Usong-uso ngayon ang hypebeast at usually ang style na ito’y puro jackets and oversized shirts or pants. MagpakahypeBAE tulad ng mag-sissums na sina Alex and Toni Gonzaga by choosing a fitted long-sleeved top with some baggy, comfortable joggers. (Image from @cathygonzaga on Instagram) 28 | CELEBRITY RADAR

SIMPLE AND LAID-BACK For a simpler and more chill look, go with the basics: a plain longsleeve turtleneck, culottes, and white sneakers ala Gabbi Garcia. (Image from @ gabbi on Instagram)

FURRY FUR FUR

Go the extra mile by donning a sosyal fur jacket, which was exactly what like Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach did on a recent trip to Korea! You can layer it on top of a turtleneck, long-sleeved dress for a sophisticated look. (Image from @piawurtzbach on Instagram)

ROCKER FEMME

Leather is one of the fabrics na hindi mo talaga masusuot tuwing mainit. So take advantage of the cool weather to rock your leather jackets, like AC Bonifacio. Accessorize with statement necklaces and belts para mas rock ang dating! (Image from @ acbonifacio on Instagram)

LAYER IT

Don’t be afraid to layer on clothes kung medyo malamig talaga. Cop this look Julia Barretto sported in her last movie Between Maybes, where she puts on a nice nude sleeveless blazer on top of a sleek black pullover. (Image from @juliabarretto) H

Celebrity Beauty

Rainy Day, OK! Here’s a list of things you should remember para ready ka pa ring umawra kahit gaano pa kasama ang panahon. TEXT BY BOY GEORGE

Opt for tinted moisturizer Wet weather means a more humid day. And a more humid day means mas mabilis mawasak ang iyong foundation. Mas fresh pa ang magiging dating mo, like Andrea Brillantes! (Image from @blythe on Instagram)

Don’t skip the sunscreen Alam mo bang dapat never kang lumalabas ng bahay nang walang sunscreen, kahit makulimlim? It’s because UV rays can still pass through the clouds and can still cause sunspots. So if you want to be makinis like Miss Maris Racal, start by making it a habit to use sunscreen after your moisturizer. (Image from @mariesteller on Instagram)

30 | CELEBRITY RADAR

Keep it happy and pink! Choose naturally pink and plump colors for your lips and cheeks like Sofia Andres para may extra pak pa rin kahit na makulimlim. Pampa-good vibes ba. (Image from @iamsofiaandres on Instagram)

Keep it simple On rainy days, less is more. So just go for natural, no makeup-makeup, and simple fresh looks lang. Maria even with minimum makeup. It lets her beauty shine talaga! (Image from @jodistamaria on Instagram)

Mind your hair ’Pag malakas ang hangin at ulan, hirap nga namang i-awra ang long hair mo! Instead, keep your hair away from your face with style para less hassle. Try a sleek ponytail, braids, or a nice, sleek bun just like Loisa Andalio’s! (Image from @ iamandalioloisa on Instagram)

Go waterproof ’Di mo maiiwasang mabasa if masyadong malakas ang ulan, so to prevent melted kilay or runny mascara, bumili ka ng beauty products na certified water-proof. (Image from @jackiegirlg on Instagram) H CELEBRITY RADAR | 31

The many hats that Jinkee Pacquiao wears As a woman, Jinkee Pacquiao wears many hats. But it is as a mother to her kids and wife to her husband Pambansang Kamao and Senator Manny Pacquiao where she shines the best.

D

TEXT BY ALEX BROSAS

espite her stature as a public figure, Jinkee is a shy person. She enjoys being at home. Thankfully, we chanced upon her on the set of a shoot for the website Metro.Style, which our EIC Francis Simeon helped organize. “Ako ‘yung sa bahay lang. Bihira akong pumunta sa mga sos yalan. Nahihiya kasi ako. My friends would tell me, ‘lumabas ka para magamit mo ’yung mga bagong ano mo diyan,’ ” she said. She’s learned to make her photos Instagrammable. Un known to many, she doesn’t use high-end cameras for self ies and IG photos. She admitted that she’s the one editing her photos. Fashion plate Through the years, Jinkee has mastered the art of dress ing, of mixing and matching. She has become known for her sartorial taste. Kung meron lang talaga akong malaking budget puwede akong bumili ng bag na mamahalin or damit with a certain amount,” she related. But it is altogether different when she is with her husband Manny. Yes, sumasabay siya sa trend. It’s a given for a fash ion plate like her. “Kapag kasama si Manny, go.

Style inspirations As a dresser, Jinkee shared how she was inspired by some personalities. Wala talaga ‘yung sinusundan. Dito, si Heart Evangelista, magaling magbihis, mabait siya,” she shared. Her most memorable outfit was a Francis Libiran frock. Halos lahat gumaya. ‘Ay, ‘yung kagaya kay Jinkee.’ Maganda naman talaga ‘yung ano niya.” She later on revealed how she dresses and what particular colors she has learned to love and appreci ate. “I’m, more on prints. Hindi ako masyado sa mga plain. I like pastel colors, bright colors. Hindi ako ma syado sa black color,” she said. Dressing, for her, depends on her moods or what is necessary for an occasion. “Kung ano lang ang maisip ko. It depends on my mood. Woman of style She believes that every woman should work on her fashion style. But this should be coupled with humi lity. When abroad, it is a must that Jinkee goes to the mall. “Kailangan makapag-mall kami. Kung hindi kasi parang hindi kumpleto ‘yung trip,” she said, admiring her latest trip with Manny in Germany and Austria. “Isa yun sa pinakamagandang experience. Kami ni Manny pa ang magkasama.”

CELEBRITY RADAR | 33

Dutiful wife Jinkee shared there are Valentine’s Days where she and Manny don’t get to see each other and celebrate the occasion. “Kahit Valentine’s Day, si Manny nasa Bulacan for a campaign. As a wife, Jinkee plays her role to the hilt. “Halimbawa sa damit, sa pagkain. Basta pagkain uupo na lang siya. Minsan ‘yung pagkain nakabalot ‘pag ‘di pa kakainin. “Minsan gigisingin ka niya, then magbihis. But Manny knows when to appreciate her fashion sense. “Gusto niya kapag nakadress alaga kasi ladylike. Minsan sabi niya, ‘Bhe, para kang sixteen yars old, ha.’ ” Values In life, Jinkee has learned a lot and from it she formed the values which she never falters to adhere to. One of them is “to love oneself.”

Wala siyang hesitation, wala siyang reklamo.” She feels her children

should focus on faith rather than blessings. Mag-focus sila sa pananampalataya, sa faith kasi the blessings will follow.” She believes that family

should come first before anything else. “The best is taking care of my family kasi iyon ang gift ng Panginoon sa atin, ang pamilya natin, to take care of them. Unsupportive mom Of late, Jinkee’s son Ji muel is following his father’s footsteps in boxing as he knocked out an opponent in an amateur boxing match months ago. Jimuel was launched as

the new endorser of BNY Jeans. Jinkee, however, does not want another boxer in the family. She’s worried kapag may boxing bout ang kan yang anak. Minsan kapag nag-uusap kami, ‘ikaw ang pinakaunsupportive mother in the world.’ Ganu’n siya. Ayoko siyang magalit kasi baka hindi niya ako kibuin. ‘Pan garap ko naman ito. Pa rang napap anaginipan daw

Now Where Are They

The singing pilot We caught up with Pinoy Dream Academy season one alumnus Ronnie Liang, who has parlayed his time on the show into a successful career as an actor and singer. Now he’s learning to fly, with his sights set on becoming a pilot. TEXT BY LEONY R. GARCIA

S

o goes the chorus of the Ronnie Liang hit “Ngiti,” which has become a national anthem of sorts since it topped the charts in 2007. Since then, the balladeer’s devotion to romantic music, a genre that he is known for courtesy of that hit song, has become evident. He has been singing sentimental ballads in many live shows including the popular Sunday noontime variety show ASAP. He has had gigs all over the Philippines and abroad, including performances with no less than the country’s Popstar Royalty Sarah Geronimo. Ronnie, who shot to fame as a finalist in season one of Pinoy Dream Academy in 2006, believes romantic songs never go out of style. You never get tired of listening to them. They’re timeless. I want to be remembered for such songs,” he said. Ronnie did not stop at being a singer. Ronnie went on to star in several movies such as Esoterika Maynila, Fan Girl/Fan Boy, 100 Tula Para Kay Stella, Petmalu, Abay Babes and the recently released action-packed thriller Maria. , Ronnie did not stop there. He surprised everyone when he announced that he’s planning to become a pilot. A BS Education degree holder, Liang took a flying course in December last year. After finishing the required subjects for ground school earlier this year (in February, to be exact), Ronnie took the next step the following month by learning flight simulation. "It has always been my dream to be a pilot and I believe that you can pursue your dreams at any time in your life. So here I am, taking the steps I need to fulfill that childhood dream," he said. 36 | CELEBRITY RADAR

While busy with his studies, he made sure his fans won’t miss him as Viva Records has released his newest album, Ronnie Liang 12, packed with songs showcasing his love for romance and sentimental songs. Some of the album’s tracks include Tila, Ligaya (a remake from Eraserheads), Yakap, Sa'yo Na Lang Ako, Pakisabi Na Lang (The Company’s hit song) and minus ones. He also did a major concert in May 2019 in New Frontier Theater in Araneta Center, Quezon City. Know more about the singing pilot through this questionnaire: Celebrity Radar: You had a brief, offbeat but remarkable scene in Maria. Will that be the start of more daring roles in your coming movie projects? Ronnie: I am very thankful to my Viva bosses Boss Vic, Ma’am Veronique and Boss Vincent for allowing me to be part of Maria. It was my first time to have that kind of scene and role that could show my versatility as an actor. I definitely

look forward to more daring roles. Can you tell us about your coming movies? I’m really looking forward to doing more movies with Viva. I believe the company has lined up a number of movies for me. Right now, I’m happy with how Maria has turned out to be a one-of-a-kind action movie. I have an ongoing TV series, Ghost Adventures, with Benjie Paras showing every Monday 9 pm at Sari-Sari Channel on Cignal Cable. How about your upcoming songs, single or album? Will there be another hit like your signature song "Ngiti?" I just released my 5th studio album, Ronnie Liang 12, under Viva Records, which already reached more than 1 million downloads/ streams online so far and sold 4000 CDs. Soon, I will collaborate with Sarah Geronimo. We will record a duet to be released for streaming. CELEBRITY RADAR | 37

Which is your priority now, singing or acting? The trend nowadays for showbiz personalities is to be able to do both. We have to entertain our audience in many ways through acting, singing and maybe dancing too. Anyway, God’s given talents should be put to good use. So expect me to do them all. But I still have to get used to people telling or introducing me as a singer and an actor. How do you juggle your time now especially you're living out your dream to become a pilot? Through proper time management plus my commitment to achieving my goal. I usually attend aviation school in the morning especially if I don’t have shows and tapings. Good thing the school is willing to adjust to any conflict in schedule. We always do make-up classes. I had finished ground schooling in like almost three months—12 subjects and simulation. How come becoming a pilot was your dream? Who influenced you to become one? Why not? I remember when I was about nine years old. I was helping my father clean the backyard when I saw an airplane in the clear blue sky. I then told my father that to fly a plane is my dream. I couldn’t forget his reply that my dream would be very hard to accomplish due to financial issues. We were not financially OK at that time. But I know in my heart at that very moment that I will become a pilot someday. How many more months or years will you have to study before you can be a commercial pilot? For a commercial pilot, you need to accomplish at least 150 to 200 flying hours to be qualified to apply for a CPL (Commercial Pilot License). Some students finish it at 11/2 to four years, depending on financial capacity because it is very expensive. But for me, I will try to finish it in less than a year and a half. Can you tell us how hard or competitive this course? Where do you study by the way? Well, it’s really a hard course. You really have to remember and you should be good in math and science. You really have to master them. You should have a strong will as well and faith in yourself. That’s because you will fly the airplane yourself and the lives of your passengers are at stake. I attended training at Strikewing Aviation Training Center in Plaridel, Bulacan. But now I am endorsing Aviation Marketing Solutions. What are your immediate plans once you become a pilot? I will shoot my first music video as a pilot. And then, in God’s will, I will finish all the necessary requirements for commercial pilot and try my luck on commercial airlines. Then maybe I can sing to the passengers on board my flight. As early now, some people are already calling me the singing pilot. And I love it! What is your long term plan for your career? If its Gods will, I will still continue my career as an actor and singer and at the same time be a pilot for a commercial airline. I believe I can do both—being in showbiz and flying out my planes. Proven Ways

Super Dads Can Manage Arthritis Pain

By Jyren Imperial

EING a Super Dad is never easy. To be a real dad, a hero to your kids is definitely the most exciting and demanding job in the world. Every father can be a Super Dad and it’s surely rewarding but it isn’t always simple. As amazing as it is, becoming a father has its shifts in life which requires daily effort and enthusiasm. Study shows that even though a lot of dads know their long-established roles as providers and discip linarians, they believe that they can do more. They view themselves as their kids’ play companion, tutor, and travel buddy. Dads face many challenges to ensure the well-being and comfort of their children. Based on the top advertising firm McCann Worldgroup Philippines (MWG) a report called “The Truth About Filipino Dads” 47% of dads doesn’t have enough time, 18% enforcing discipline and 17% doesn’t have enough money. They truly have that super dad cape, however, dads are still only given a week of paternity leave as to at least three months that moms have. Joint pains, back pain and general body pain can be tough for Super

Dads that always support and care for their children. While arthritis can happen in any joint in the body, doctors say that the ones we use the most are more affected such as hands, feet and the weight-bearing joints like the back, hips, knees, and ankles. The symptoms can vary from pain, stiffness, swelling, tightness in the joint or cracking and decreased range of motion. Most Super Dads experience these symptoms while doing some type of physical activity. There are more than 100 types of arthritis. Osteoarthritis is the common one that develops in joints with overuse. Rheumatoid arthritis is another type that is an autoimmune disease in which your immune system attacks your joints. While the diagnosis is common doctors say treatment varies depending on the cause.

Here are the 7 Proven Ways Super Dads Can Manage Arthritis Pain Start an arthritis exercise program - First, you have to understand what type of activity is within your limits and level of exercise is appropriate to your type of arthritis. A mild to moderate exer cise can help ease arthritis pain and stiffness such as stretching, walking, water aerobics and flowing movements, such as tai chi and yoga. Achieve to lose some weight - Dropping one pound of weight will result in four pounds of pressure being eliminated from the knees based on a 2005 study of the Arthritis Foundation. A 2010 study from the University of Paris published in the Annals of Rheumatic Disease indicated that weight loss can lessen pain, improve function and lower inflammation levels in the body. Change your eating habits - Eat at least 3 to 4 ounces of fatty fish twice a week because they’re highest in anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D, which are both bene ficial for minimizing the inflammation and symptoms of arthritis. Adding garlic, ginger, broccoli, walnuts, berries, spinach, grapes, and olive oil to your daily meal will bring powerful components that may bring relief from inflammation and arthritis. This food will be beneficial for your overall health because of its diseasefighting powers. Drink lots of water - Adequate water consumption can lessen joint pain and other arthritis symptoms. Drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water everyday helps flush out uric acid from your body. Enough water intake can help keep your joints well lubricated and can help prevent gout attacks. Choose to use a mobility aid - Having a device designed to help people who are having difficulty moving around is additional support for people with arthritis. It will improve and assist in balance when walking and it will decrease the risk of falling.

Born to serve Celebrity Radar shines a spotlight on Vico Sotto—one of the newest, most dynamic and youngest politicians around. Fresh off his big win in the 2019 midterm elections, Pasig City’s new mayor talks about his love for public service and sheds light on his future plans.

I

TEXT BY JOSH MERCADO

t was the toughest fight of Vico Sotto’s life. Before filing a certificate of candidacy, he called his father, the famous comedian Vic Sotto, saying that he’s planning to run for mayor in Pasig City. Vic stopped for a minute. He was quiet for several minutes, but then he gave Vico his blessing. Meanwhile, his mom, the great actress Coney Reyes, prayed for him. For Vico, politics was his calling. He always felt like his name was written in the stars. On the day of his proclamation, that feeling was validated as the 29-year-old was announced as the new mayor of the city that for 27 years (or much of his life) was ruled by his opponent, Robert “Bobby” Eusebio. For Vico, greatness 40 | CELEBRITY RADAR

is determined by service. Although he grew up in showbiz and is no stranger to the limelight, Vico always knew he was meant to do something else other than follow in his parents’ footsteps as an actor or performer. He always knew he was born to serve. But things changed noong tumakbo s’ya bilang konsehal ng lungsod. He realized that politics truly feeds his soul. So Vico followed his heart. Now, he’s the mayor of Pasig City. Funnily enough, Vico’s name was banned in the market during the

Vico Sotto with his proud parents — Vic Sotto and Coney Reyes — during the filing of candidacy. campaign period. Dahil bawal magtinda ng “biko.” In a sitdown interview before the election, Vico was strong enough to tell his stories: from Eusebio’s banning of Juan For All, All For Juan (a segment of Eat Bulaga) in the city to cutting of electricity during his speeches and visits to barangays. However, as the saying goes, you can’t put a good man down. One said, “Para sa pagbabago. Vico believes that it’s time for change. He wants to offer a “walang palakasan” type of service. He’s the kind of politician who’s idealistic and is determined to do all he can to see that his ideas come to fruition for the good of his constituents. Vico tried his best to get them to see that during the campaign period. That was when all the Pasigueños began to realize that their city needs someone like Vico. Change requires commitment and cooperation from the people. As a leader, he wants to make sure that everyone’s voice is heard. Vico says he wants people to feel free to speak up so they can help him make their city better. This young public servant is determined to give his people quality service, but he wants to do it hand-in-hand with them. He doesn’t want to be the kind of Mayor who will rule his constituents with an iron fist. Rather, he wants to foster a sense of cooperation in his city. He wants everyone living in Pasig to help him make their city a good place for everyone from all walks of life to live in.

Coney’s good son, Vico

1. KALUSUGAN NG PANGKALAHATAN

Libreng konsultasyon, gamot, ospital at iba pang gastusing medikal. Paggamit ng modernong Health IT System. Unti-unting paglipat tungo sa “primary” o “preventive” healthcare.

Vico and now congressman-elect Roman Romulo along with other candidates of Pasig took an oath for peaceful, honest and cre dible elections less than two months before the mid-term elections. CELEBRITY RADAR | 41

Vic is blessed to have good children. Vico is one of them.

Vico's post on his Instagram account three weeks before the mid-term elections: Let's take a break from the more serious posts to share this very accurate portrait of me. By a cute little girl from Brgy Sagad

2. PABAHAY

Buong pagpapatupad ng Pasig Transparency Ordinance of 2018. Pag42 | CELEBRITY RADAR

Asked if he has a girlfriend, he jokingly replied, “Wala nga po, eh. Hanapan n’yo po ako.” Wala man siyang first lady, Vico isn’t the owner of a lonely heart, as he treats all Pasigueños as the love of his life, bukod sa kanyang mga kaibigan at pamilya na sumuporta sa kanya simula sa umpisa. Natalo man niya ang higante sa lungsod, he will continue to fight for people’s rights. He strongly highlights his “walang palakasan” system. His name will surely change the city, not because he’s Vic and Coney’s son, but because of his strong force and energy to serve, and his fresh ideas. H

Vico has so much love for his mama! tatag din ng Government Efficiency and Anti-Corruption Commision. With these plans, maraming humanga kay Vico. So much praises. Ngunit ang parating paalala sa kanya ng kanyang mga magulang is to stay true to his core, be humble, always pray. Naging prayer warrior ang kanyang mommy Coney during Vico’s campaign. He grew up with his mom but that doesn’t mean Vico has no connection with his father. As described by friends and parents, Vico is a man of few words, but always on point. He is warm and welcoming in an authentic way. He is reserved and cautious in a way that can only be expected from someone who grew up in the spotlight. He recalled na pinipilit siya para sumali sa mga guesting kasi he knew that was not his calling. When Vico appeared in one episode of Juan For All, All For Juan, its boisterous host Jose Manalo started linking him to Maine Mendoza. Pero noong nakapanayam namin s’ya, Vico clarified that he and Maine are just friends dahil sa Eat Bulaga. Magunaw man ang mundo, Vico swears he will never go into showbiz. He knows for sure that his heart, mind, body, and soul are for serving people. That’s what separates him from his pa rents. Public service is his one great love

Vico and his mama were’nt able to celebrate Mother’s Day because of the elections, but he tells her on his IG how thankful he is for her being supportive, that he loves her and he will forever be her baby. Sizzling Sanya Despite the rainy season, Kapuso star Sanya Lopez sizzles in this Celebrity Radar exclusive, in which she opens up about life, love and what for her is the sexiest part of a man’s body. TEXT BY MILDRED BACUD 44 | CELEBRITY RADAR

‘P

atience is a virtue.’ In 2012, Sanya was only 14 when she was discovered by the late German Moreno when she visited the set of Walang Tulugan with the Master Showman. Her brother was a mainstay host. When I got the role sobrang happy and sobrang thankful sa direktor namin kasi pinagtanggol niya ako bakit ako ‘yung napili.” After the said fantaserye, nagtuluy-tuloy pa ang ganda ng takbo ng career ni Sanya, maging sa pelikula ay sumabak na

Her launching movie Wild And Free with leading man Derrick Monasterio under Regal Films gave her first acting award in the 35th PMPC Star Awards for Movies as Best New Movie Actress of the Year. “With that recognition, sobrang rewarding as an actress. I am so happy and thankful for that. Inaalay ko ‘yun kay kuya Germs. Sayang wala na siya. Thankful din ako sa GMA, sa pagtitiwala. ‘Yung family ko, si kuya at siyempre ‘yung dalawang managers Frank Millari and Alvin Fortuno na sobrang nagtiyaga sa akin, thank you talaga. Of course salamat sa PMPC.” Well, nasubaybayan na natin ang career ni Sanya, what about her personal life or lovelife maybe?

All of a sudden you had a million dollars. What’s the first thing you would buy and why is this purchase important to you? I will buy a piece of land, a big one, wherein I can build houses for my family, friends and others who are in need. If you were to become pregnant at the peak of your career, will you keep it a secret or not? If that will happen, I’ll be proud to tell the whole world of the blessing that I’m about to have, because there’s no career or success that’s worth more than a gift of life given by God. As a popular actress, do you think that speaking English correctly is important, especially in this day and age of grammar Nazis who will make fun of your mistakes, just in case? Why or why not? It’s just right that when you’re speaking English or any other language, you have to do it correctly. But no one has the right to make fun of other people’s mistakes, because attitude is more important than being good in speaking English. Why should you be the next big female superstar? What is the most important lesson you’ve learned? I try my best to be the best version of myself, maybe the lesson that I keep always is be good, do your best and make sure that you don’t step on somebody’s toes. umu-bongga ngayon ang showbiz career ng Hashtags member na si Kid Yambao. Bukod sa regular siyang napapanood sa It’s Showtime, kaliwa’t kanan din ang kanyang out of town shows lately. So parang sinasala kami na from hundreds to 40, naging 20 to 10, to 8.

In real life, isa ba siyang chickboy? Esplika ni Kid, “In real life po?

Dalawa ang kapareha niya rito, sina Yen Santos (whose latest TV outing was in the phenomenally successful Halik) at ang komedyanteng si Lassy Marquez.

Kid and his co-stars, (from left) Arlene Muhlach, Yen Santos, Lassy and MC, with Ogie Diaz (standing), his manager and producer of their movie, Two Love You, and the production staff.

Nabitin nga ako, eh,” dagdag pa niya sabay tawa. Pagdating kay Kid, looks can be deceiving talaga.

With that kind of attitude, tiyak na sisikat si Kid on his own. H

Sports Idol

t i t o g s ’ e H Champion Aljon Salonga talks about what it’s really like to be a swimmer in a country where basketball is king, and opens up about his showbiz aspirations.

TEXT BY ALEX BROSAS

n a sea of swimming champs, Aljon Salonga is a standout. Not only does he possess a to-die-for bod, he’s also quite a looker. For someone who says he does not like swimming at all, as his first love was basketball, Aljon has grown by leaps and bounds, scaling greater heights in swimming compared to most of his contemporaries. “I only started liking swimming in high school. My older brothers were swimmers too,” he said. Aljon studied at the University of Santo Tomas where he studied Bachelor of Fine Arts and Design, Major in Painting. “I was supposed to take Communication Arts but they ran out of slots so I went with my second choice. I didn’t shift courses anymore because I found friends there and I wanted to graduate on time.” Aljon’s 26 and is quite towering at 5’9” with a shoe size of 9. He is the third child in a brood of four, with two older brothers and a younger sister. Growing up, Aljon learned swimming through his father who taught him how to swim when he was around eight years old and he taught him for about one summer. He learned all swimming styles in his young life. His idols in swimming are Adam Peaty and Joseph Schooling. “Yes, I did all styles. Actu52 | MARCH 2019 | CELEBRITY RADAR

ally I can do all strokes, but my favorite is the breaststroke because I can swim it effortlessly, fast or slow. The most difficult is butterfly because it requires so much effort and undulation.” Aside from swimming, Aljon also plays basketball and water polo. Joining his first swimming competition was a journey he relished. “As far as I can remember, the first competition I ever joined was Milo for novice swimmers. I didn’t win, though,” he said

laughing. But that did not deter his determination to improve as later in life he joined the NCAA and UAAP competitions and “won a few medals in those competitions.” So, how does he prepare for competitions? Are his preparations different or the same when it comes to local and international competitions? “I train everyday, including holidays.

I follow and trust what my coaches tell me to do. I also do extra workouts, get enough sleep, and eat healthy,” he shared. And when he fails, Jon always move on from defeat and “pray more and tell myself to do better in training.” Because he has been a swimmer since he was young, Jon was able to make his swimming team his buddies. “Yes, they are my buddies. We usually bond during and after training by laughing at our own jokes.”

Yes, he believes that the Philippine Swimming team is given the right attention and funding. That said, he also has some frustrations being a swimmer. “Sometimes I have difficulty getting the target times in training. I just do my best to reach them by reminding myself why I am doing this and by reminding myself what my goals are.” Years back, Akiko Thompson and Christine Jacob brought honors in the swimming department. Is it a correct observation that swimmers are not as popular now as they were before? “I think that’s correct to a certain extent, given that swimmers nowadays don’t get as much recognition and exposure. But I believe it’s a good sport for everyone as it increases core and overall body strength. Swimming also helps develop resiliency and improves health, in the sense that it also strengthens the lungs. This is especially helpful to those who have asthma. Also, you’ll have the chance to meet people from different countries around the world.”

CELEBRITY RADAR | 53

Even though he’s a champion swimmer, Aljon has certain fears. He also gets cramps from time to time. “I’m scared of swimming alone in an ocean and I’m scared of sharks and other big fish in the sea,” he admitted. “Furthermore, sometimes, I get cramps when I haven’t been training well and swim in a competition without the right nutrition and preparation. Fortunately, I know the best way to address cramps, and that’s to stay relaxed, hydrate, and stretch until the muscle relaxes.” He believes that when you fail, all you’ve got to do is to get up and try again. “No matter how many times you get knocked down, you must always get back stronger and that giving up is not an option whether in sports or in life,” he said. Although he’s lean and fit, Jon has never joined any body or bikini search before. He says he doesn’t see himself joining

such competitions, but he has appeared in a few commercials for Revicon Forte, Pizza Hut, Petron and Cobra. He also admits that he wants to try showbiz. “I haven’t tried it yet. I want to try it maybe soon or in the future because that’s one of my dreams. I really want to play a superhero in a blockbuster movie,” Aljon said. “Given the chance, I want to work with the leading actors of this generation like LizQuen and KathNiel.” “They’re the couples I’ve been dreaming to work with and I think I’ll learn a lot from them. I’m also one of their fans. They act really well.” Will this swimming champ really become a caped crusader on the silver screen? We hope he does. After all, he’s got it—the body and the X-factor. H

ng Celebrity Parenti From award-winning actor to doting father and model public servant, Richard Gomez is playing a new game on a new playing field— and loving every minute of it.

Goma’s new game TEXT BY LEONY R. GARCIA

O

rmoc City Mayor Richard Gomez is one of the top actors in the Philippines. He reigned supreme as a leading man in movies in the early 90s, winning several awards and nominations from 1990-1999. His most notable movies, however, saw him paired with then showbiz girlfriends Dawn Zulueta and Sharon Cuneta. Before the midterm elections in 2019, he made time for a reunion movie with Cuneta via Star Cinema’s Three Words to Forever. 56 | CELEBRITY RADAR

The adonis (a tall, dark and handsome man) of Philippine Cinema married Lucy Torres in 1998, who is now on her second term as Congresswoman of Ormoc. Their union produced a lovely daughter named Juliana, who recently graduated from high school. First foray into the political arena paid off when he was named mayor of Ormoc City during the historic 2016 general elections, the same year former Davao City Mayor and prosecutor Rodrigo Duterte won the presidency. How is Gomez as a father to Ormoc residents? Gomez did not come to the political arena unprepared. First, he finished his Associate in Arts degree at the University of the Philippines Open University in

2009. He then studied Masters in Business Administration at the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA in 2016. He also served as his wife’s chief of staff during her first term as Ormoc representative. He learned the ropes of politics and local governance from her. As mayor, Gomez is hands-on: always present and on the go for all the city's activities and legislative functions that required his presence. No wonder he endeared himself to the folks in his wife’s hometown and was reelected in May this year. What would be his priorities for his second term as a Mayor? An athlete and health and wellness advocate, Gomez is pushing for a healthier Ormoc. Among other things, he is pushing for a law on the mandatory use of Automated External Difibrillators (AEDs) in public places such as markets, conference halls, sports arenas, and hotels. “I will ask the Congressman of our district, who happens to be my wife to file a bill making such devices mandatory for LGUs and establishments,” he said during a forum with the Philippine Heart Association (PHA) in Pasay City on June 26. An AED is a portable electronic device commonly used to restore a person’s normal heartbeat in emergency cases such as cardiac arrest. Republic Act 10871 provides that students should be provided basic life support training, including how to use equipment for first aid. However, Gomez pointed out the existing law is not enough, as it doesn’t emphasize the importance of AED units and training. Gomez said the Ormoc LGU has allotted a little less than P3M for the purchase of more than 20 AED units to be distributed to terminals, schools and its sports arena. Gomez’s vision is that other LGUs will follow suit, adding that over 8,000 students and civilians in his city already underwent CPR training. Gomez further said he will start asking City Hall employees to walk up and

down the stairs of their three-storey office building to make sure employees give their hearts the exercise they need at least twice a day. Would he extend the same wellness advocacy to the showbiz industry? Gomez said, in his own capacity, he

will try to pursue the advocacies of the PHA like Sneakers Friday (the wearing of rubber shoes for easy movement and walking, healthy lifestyle including zero smoking and zero sugary beverages intake) and Fit Heart Minute (one-minute pocket exercises at least twice a day). “CPR is usually taken for granted until something happens. Kids as young as ten years old should learn to do CPR,” he said. He stressed the importance of CPR training and the AED in the entertainment industry, noting that artists, workers are most vulnerable to heart disease due to long hours of work. “We’ve seen a lot of people in the movie industry collapse and die because of stress and fatigue, or lack of sleep. Every set should have an AED,” he urged. Gomez, together with the PHA, is taking the DOH’s 2013 report seriously. That report showed that heart disease is the leading killer in the country. The World Health Organization has also found that about 35%

of the country’s total population died of cardiovascular diseases. On another note, how is Juliana? What is Gomez parenting style for his only daughter? Gomez warms up at the mention of his only daughter. A doting father, he was actually on his way to join Juliana in Manila for a quick bonding session. You see, the young lady studies in Manila while her famous parents are based in Ormoc to fulfill their duties as public servants. “Parenting is a continuous process. Now that she's a teenager, there's a new level of parenting that we have to apply. I've always been hands-on as a father to Juliana, but I’ll be even more so now that she'll be in college this year," he said. Whether it’s parenting, politics, showbiz, or sports, Richard is being the same energy, enthusiasm and love to whatever he does—and it shows. H

Discoid Lupus Eruthematosus or DLE -- This is known as the Cutaneous Lupus, because it only occurs only on one’s skin. It often appears on the face, neck, and scalp. debonaire gentleman by the name of Dante Rivero was introduced in the movie Nag-aapoy na Dambana in 1967 starring the popular love team of Ms. Gloria Romero and Luis Gonzales. With his good looks, charm and talent, the young man, barely out of his teens at 21, became part of the glittering world of show business. Since then, acting has become Dante’s bread and butter. Needless to say, the veteran actor is so thankful that his career lasted 50 years, giving him and his family a comfortable life which he is enjoying to this day. Let’s hear some more from Tito Dante in this exclusive interview he did for Celebrity Radar. Is acting a lucrative career in the Philippines? Dante offered a resounding yes to this question and acknowleged the fact that showbiz has changed his life tremendously. “I love my job. Movies are my life. Dito ako nakabili ng bahay at mga sasakyan,” he said. If he isn’t an actor today, what would he be doing? “I would either be working with the NBI or I would be a policeman. I studied criminology but I followed the call of showbusiness.”

Dante Rivero and senior star Ramon Revilla, Sr. (who was one of the awardees as Natata nging Bituin ng Siglo) catch up at the 35th PMPC Star Awards for Movies held recently.

Is there a difference among the actors of your generation from today’s millennials? During their time, he said, it’s either you are cut out of acting or you are not. “That’s the way I see it. May inborn talent ang artista noon. However, today mas maganda ang preparation

Pabor ba si Dante sa network war? The star of Nang Ngumiti ang Langit currently airing on ABS-CBN said he looks at it as a positive thing. “Kailangan din kasi ang kumpetisyon, healthy competition. Mas may cha-llenge kasi ‘pag may kumpetisyon.” Even at 72, the 35th PMPC’s Nora Aunor Ulirang Artista Lifetime Achievement awardee is still active in the industry. Last year, he was lead star in Kung Paano Hinihintay Ang Dapithapon where he won his first international best actor award. This in addition to his numerous acting awards from FAMAS and the CMMA, he said. His most notable roles were in the movies The Janitor, It Takes A Man And A Woman, Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story, My House Husband, Working Girls, Ang Darling Kong Aswang, Tarot, You Changed My Life, A Very Special Love, Anak ng Kumander, A Love Story, Nasaan Ka Man, Walang Kapalit, Lapu-Lapu, Kailangan Kita, Esperanza, the Movie, Di Puwedeng Hindi Puwede, Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay Strebel, Gestapo ng Manila, Paano Ang Puso Ko, Kristo, Bala Ko Ang Hahatol, and Natutulog Ba Ang Diyos, among many others. Dante has worked with the county’s best actresses, namely Susan Roces, Amalia Fuentes, Boots Anson Roa, Liza Lorena, and even Nora Aunor and Vilma Santos whom he described to be professionals. “I love them all as co-workers.” Dante is blessed with equally good-looking sons, namely JV, Danny Boy and Michael who for a time, followed his footsteps in the movie-making industry. Celebrity Radar wishes the veteran actor well. May you have more years to come in the showbiz industry and may your dream of directing your own movie come true soonest. H

ng kabataang artista because acting workshops are available. Or they can go to various schools of acting for them to learn more.” How about movie-making? May pagkakaiba ba noon at ngayon? He said during his time, the director and producer are on top of everything. The director comes when the cast is already there. But with the rise of superstars, famous actors call the shots when it comes to the shooting schedule. But that’s no longer true today, especially with teleseryes, he says. “We work as a group. Everyone involved should be there on the days specified for taping. Bida man o hindi kailangan sa eksena, dapat present lahat sa taping days,” said Dante. “And the best thing is that everybody is well-taken care of. We have an airconditioned tent to rest in during breaks,” he added. The veteran actor has done practically all the roles he can dream of. That’s why his only wish before his retirement is to be able to direct a “colossal movie.” “I used to direct movies and I want to direct again,” he said. In fact, Dante has a suggestion for the movie industry. Actually, he said, he already suggested it during the time he was a member of the directors guild. He said, the Philippines needs to produce big budget films courtesy of the country’s movie producers coming together and getting famous Hollywood actors, the likes of Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt. “Let them act with the country’s excellent actors as well for international movies. We could have done the same. We can still do it.”

Lessons learned Our resident advice columnist talks about what you can learn from a relationship that went south. According to DJ Laila, even if your ex didn’t end up staying in your life, you can look back on what you had with fondness, as you can always learn something from every ending, no matter how hard it was for you to let go. Ayon sa isa kong tagapakinig, “Once a cheater, always a cheater.”

Sad ‘no? Masaktan ka man, time can heal everything.” Give your best, don’t give your worst.” “Need mo pa din magtira for yourself, wag mo ibigay lahat, para ‘pag naiwan ka or may ‘di magandang nangyari, you still can move on.” Charot! May isa pang nagsabi ng kahit in love na in love ka, ‘wag kalimutan na may pamilya at kaibigan ka. Tama naman ‘yun. Dapat i-balanse mo talaga. Friends may understand that you are deeply in

Tandaan mo na you can not choose family. “When you can’t come to a compromise, it means you’re not meant to stay together for life, so let go. Each of you should find the one you can compromise with every now and then since it takes a lot of compromises to get a relationship going.” Masakit kasi talaga ang letting go lalo na kapag ang goal niyo ay maging together forever, but sadly, minsan sa fairy tales lang mahahanap ang mga katagang “and they lived happily ever after.” Huhu.

Jump into June

Horoscope

The only way you’re going to be able to make the most of all this month has to offer is if you jump into June after reading this new forecast from our friends at The Mala Tree Crystal Shop.
