TO THE YEAR THAT WAS

M

Y favorite month aside from July which is my birth month is September because it's the start of the “ber” months. And needless to say, my la favorite of course is December. Why? Because everyone’s happy during Christmas--ke poor or rich, young and old. Parang ang saya-saya kasi sa pakiramdam tuwing sasapit ang birthdays natin at ang Kapaskuhan, especially here in the Philippines where the celebrations of Christmas is the longest. Tapos, may New Year celebration pang kasunod! Making every issue of Celebrity Radar magazine every month entails a lot of hard work as it meant doing a lot of interview and pictorial. Having said that, we thank you for all your support for our maiden issue. While it is true that we have birth pains and it was a struggle, it was all worth it. Having seen our first magazine issue is like giving birth to our first baby. For our December 2018-January 2019 issue in one, we offer a lot. What is it like to be fighting not as Kapuso Kings but as warring brothers Cain at Abel as portrayed by Dingdong Dantes and Dennis Trillo? Catch the latest on basketball hottie Ricci Rivero. Be enthralled with one of the hottest love teams Enrique Gil and Liza Soberano. Learn Asia's Songbird Regine Velasquez’s favorites. Drool over hunky Josh Colet of “Los Bastardos.” Get into the ultra busy schedule of Kapamilya Princess Maja Salvador as she juggles between raket here and abroad. And finally, be awed at Coco Martin’s multi-million and to-diefor vehicles. In between, let’s take a ringside view of Krista Ranillo’s life in the US. And learn a thing or two from the single parenting style of Jenine Desiderio. Be inspired with the life story of Rey Valera. Take a look at Kaladkaren kitchen skills and learn from the story

BTS is not your ordinary boyband

heir group’s name stands for Bangtan Soneyondan—which, when roughly translated, means “Bulletproof Boy Scouts”—and they’re winning hearts not just in their native Korea, but all over the world, too. Recently, BTS had an album debut atop the Billboard 200 chart, which ranks the most popular albums in the United States. They also became the first Korean group to perform at an American stadium, and their concert movie ‘Burn the Stage: The Movie’ outperformed One Direction’s ‘Where We Are’ at the US box office. Iba sila. “I discovered them way back when I was still studying in Bohol,” ani Vivoree. “High school pa ako nu’n. I found out about BTS kasi ‘yung ibang members ng barkada or squad ko, super fans nila. But I didn’t like K-pop at the time, so whenever my friends would fangirl over BTS, I

8 | DEC 2018 - JAN 2019 | CELEBRITY RADAR

would just ignore them lang.” It took a while for Vivoree to catch the BTS fever that had swept the halls of her high school. But when she came down with it, there was no going back for her. It happened when Vivoree—a talented musician in her own right who writes her own songs in her spare time—was surfing the internet, looking for something new to listen to. “I was bored, so I went online. While I was scrolling sa social media ko, nadaanan ko ‘yung isang music video nila and I watched it. Nagustuhan ko ‘yung kanta, so I watched one more music video and then another, until umabot na sa point na ang dami ko na palang napanood na videos nila, hindi ko lang namamalayan. That was when I became a fan. I don’t really have a bias or favorite member as of now. When people ask me who my bias is sa BTS, I get confused. I have a hard time choosing just one. I love them all so much. They’re all so different kasi, which is why I don’t know how to pick a bias.” BTS’ members range in age from 25 to 20. “Worldwide Handsome” Jin is the eldest at 25; next is the idealistic and soulful rapper Suga, 24; followed by former street dancer J-Hope and their leader RM, both 23; modern dancer Jimin and

master impressionist V, both 22; and Jungkook, the baby of the group at 20. Each member is vastly different from the next, which is why Vivoree can’t pick a favorite. Para sa kanya, there’s a reason to love all seven of them. To say that BTS’ fans are devoted to the group would be a major, major understatement. Western media believes that the ARMY—short for “Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth”—is largely responsible for BTS’ meteoric rise. The ARMY translates lyrics and even videos of their Korean media appearances. It also rallies its members to help the group pick up clicks, likes, retweets and views to get BTS trending worldwide on social media. So I don't think that the language matters. If you're really interested in what their songs mean, you can just run a quick Google search. I actually recommend you do that because it will make you see that there’s much more to BTS, especially their songs, than good beats.” Totoo ‘yan. Instead, their songs talk about things like the education system in their native Korea, materialism and the media. Two of their earliest singles, “No More Dream” and “N.O.,” were about Korean students who approached their studies like zombies, going to school and attending classes without a real

sense of purpose. In addition to all the material BTS has released as a group, some of the members have put out solo projects. Layunin niya ang magraise ng awareness tungkol dito through his music. They’re out to help people through their music. Released earlier this year, it became the first album by a Korean group to turn Gold. This happened on

November 9, 2018, when it shipped 500,000 units, earning that certification from the Recording Industry Association of America. “One of the songs there goes, ‘Let's be honest, your standards are higher when you impose them on yourself.’ That’s so true. We can easily forgive others or tell them it’s alright to make mistakes. But we tend to beat ourselves up over our own mistakes. But BTS taught me that it’s all in your head and that good or bad, you are who you are. You deserve to be loved, no matter what.” “I grew a lot as a person, but more importantly, I found other BTS fans who are now my best CELEBRITY RADAR | DEC 2018 - JAN 2019 | 9

friends for life. We have a group called BTS Noonas and we hold sleepovers and viewing parties to support them. We even organized three block screenings for their movie. The BTS Noonas are important to me. We’re like family already, and without the group, I never would’ve met them.” Para kay Vivoree naman, kasama ang BTS sa mga naging inspirations niya to do well in her own showbiz career. Not for 10 | DEC 2018 - JAN 2019 | CELEBRITY RADAR

anything else, but para maging successful din siya like her idols, at maka-inspire din siya ng ibang tao tulad nila. “Sobrang laking tulong ng BTS sa showbiz life ko,” she says. “There was one point in my life where I stopped writing songs because I couldn’t think of anything interesting to write about. I also lost my motivation. I don’t know why. Then, when I listened to their new songs and studied the meaning of their lyrics, I felt the fire in me burn again. I started wanting to play and write music again. So I jumped back into my music a hundred times harder than I did before. They inspire me so much and I hope that I can inspire others the way BTS inspired me.” Nawa’y magpatuloy ang success nila, so they can continue burning up stages and touching lives all over the world. BTS is not your ordinary boyband, and the global music scene needs them now more than ever. H

Ang pelikula ni Brocka ay sinasabing "a strong social and moral melodrama set in Marcos era’s Philippines."

Yung last namin "Endless Love" pa.

Kuwento niya, "As much as possible, gusto ko ako talaga, I don't want to fake it, kasi lalo na 'pag kaya ko talaga. Like nu'ng pinatalon nila ako sa ilog or 'yung type na may malaking gap from one building to the next. Personally, I am in a happy place."

DINGDONG DANTES & SOLENN HEUSSAFF

We are passionate about acting. Pag binigay ang ganitong pagkakataon hindi ka lang matutuwa na gawin ito, to make it work, and make it work really well." May action scenes. Mabilis na tugon ni Dantes, "Hindi naman ako observer ni Dennis in the sense na nag-ki-critic ako sa mga ginagawa niya. Admirer ako sa mga choices of roles niya, his body of work. He always wants to challenge himself and wants roles and characters that pushes him on the edge.

Kahit anong ingat, anything can happen. Yung outcome, you can never tell dahil ang hawak lang namin, 'yung attitude mo towards it. Ang daming factors 'to na hindi mo hawak, pero you trust your instincts, 'yung co-workers mo, 'yung stunt people, especially 'yung sa direktor, 'pag alam mong pareho ang gusto ninyong ma-achieve, 'yung desired results, maganda talaga. Yung pagod, pawis mo, sulit." Iba-iba ang gusto at ang panlasa ng audience pero hangga't maaari, we are not short changing them. Narito kami to make sure na they will be entertained and we are giving them a good show." Now that it has happened sobrang nagpapasalamat ako. I feel very lucky pero lahat nu'ng happiness and luck, I also owe it to other people who worked with me, hindi lang ako 'yun. HIndi lang naman ako 'yun, marami kaming nagtrabaho for it. Nagkataon lang na ako ang bida. "Review - nakakagukat 'yung ibang perspective. Siyempre may sarili akong intrepretasyon, I was pleasantly surprised with the different opinions.

SHYR VALDEZ

VINCE VANDORPE

Sasagutin lahat ‘yan ng nagbalikKapamilya after 20 years, ang Asia’s Songbird, Regine Velasquez-Alcasid.

P

asok din sa listahan ng celebrities na magse-celebrate ngayong Pasko ang lodi natin sa biritan na si Regine Velasquez-Alcasid kasama ang kanyang asawa na si Ogie at anak nilang si Nate, as well as her lovely stepdaughter Leila, kaya naman kinorner ko muna si Ate Reg ng bayan! Before Christmas day ang flight ng mag-anak papuntang Tokyo, Japan, pero babalik din daw sila bago mag-New Year, dahil dito raw talaga sila sa Manila nagse-celebrate ng Bagong Taon kasama ang kanyang Nanay Tessie sa kanilang bahay. Now, we'll let you know some of the things na maaaring hindi pa natin alam tungkol kay Songbird.

1. Celebrity Radar: What is the favorite gift

you received from your husband, Ogie Alcasid? Regine Velasquez-Alcasid: Madami. Pero ako kasi mas gusto ko 'yung gift n'ya sa akin nu'ng birthday ko (this year), nagpunta kami sa Boracay. Mas gusto ko 'yung gano'n. Time. 2. RVA: I like it here. I like it in Boracay. 3. CR: Mahilig ka ba sa jewelry? RVA: I'm very fond of jewelry. (Regine's birthstone is diamond.) 4. CR: How about shoes? RVA: Mahilig ako sa sapatos, period. Minsan kahit walang brand. Comfort has nothing to do with it. It's the style. Wala kaya akong kumportableng sapatos. Maliit ang paa ko. Size 6. As in maliit s'ya. 5.

RVA: Minsan 'pag may time. Past time din kasi ng nanay ko. 6. CR: What about makeup? RVA: I'm a big makeup freak! 7. Alam mo 'yung maliliit ngayon. Ganyang size. (A round Louis Vuitton monogram sling bag.) Yan ngayon ang bet ko. For some reason, nabibigatan na ako sa malalaki. 8. CR: What is your favorite movie of all-time? RVA: Pretty Woman (which stars Julia Roberts and Richard Gere) 9. RVA: Favorite song ko parang depending on my mood, kasi nga maybe because it's my job. I don't know. (CR: Kahit sarili mong kanta?) Lalo na! Pinaka-memorable for me nu'ng mga panahon na 'yon is 'Pangarap Ko Ang Ibigin Ka,' because my husband wrote that not just for me to sing, but it's about me. 10. CR: What song do you sing on videoke? RVA: 'Till My Heartaches End,' by Ella Mae Saison. Hindi ko alam kung bakit. I really love that song. H CELEBRITY RADAR | DEC 2018 - JAN 2019 | 23

O TEXT: ALWIN IGNACI

Rainbow’s Sunset

24 | DEC 2018 - JAN 2019 | CELEBRITY RADAR

Mary, Marry Me.

ang mga action sequence, best in pasabog agad, best in slow motion. Refreshing rin to see Martin na very, very light ang katauhang ginampanan at panalo ang mga pasimpleng the moves niya kay Maine Mendoza, huh!

Popoy Em Jack: The Puliscredibles

Parang bume-bente anyos ang aura at kaguapuhan ni Rodel kapag kaeksena si Maine, a new love team is born, indeed!

Vic Sotto is Vic Sotto kaya to see him nakikipag-bakbakan at barilan na may kasamang Bossing humor, sa mga dabarkads at madlang pipol, tiyak they will love the film and Sotto even more! O, wala tayong pakialam kung ano ang final eight dahil nga may pera ang lahat, we can afford and splurge all we want. At huling tanong, bakit ang films based on the finished scripts, at ‘yung finished film products, parehong-pareho ang genre? Dalawa ang horror, Otlum at Aurora. Dalawa ang drama, Rainbow’s Sunset at One Great Love. The Girl In The Orange Dress.

Chikahan to the max ang tatlo at napansin ni Julia ang mga nagkikislapang sing-sing ni Ate Shawie, sabay sabi kay Joshua ng: "Baba, you have to work, work, work." What she meant was for Josh to work hard para mabigyan s'ya nito ng ganoong kalaking diamond round ring na baka halfmeant, half-joke lang naman.

Kapuso young actress Pauline Mendoza celebrated her 19th birthday.

Ricci’s journey began when he was a kid, thanks to his father Paolo, who was once a varsity player too— although he played a different sport. The elder Rivero played on the PATTS College of Aeronautics volleyball team that bagged the Cultural and Athletic Association of Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (CAACUP) championship in the 90’s. Paolo was also part of a team that played in Hong Kong and Singapore. When he finally retired from competitive volleyball, Paolo worked at Philippine Airlines until he resigned to pursue further studies. He flew to the US and studied to become a strength and conditioning coach. Upon returning to the Philippines, Paolo found work with the varsity basketball teams of Arellano University, Asian College of Science and Technology and National University. He even had stints with PBA teams Barako Bull Energy and Phoenix Fuel Masters. Paolo’s son Prince wasted no time in taking advantage of his father’s background as a strength and conditioning coach. While he was playing for the National University Bullpups, Prince would train with his

father after practice. Still, all those father-and-son workouts planted the seeds of athleticism in Ricci, and he reaps their benefits to this day.

BASKETBALL DIARIES

Ricci spent most of his formative years in Isabela, where he studied at the Casa Del Niño Montessori School in Ilagan City. When he was in the sixth grade, the Rivero family packed their things and moved to Manila, where Ricci enrolled in elementary school at the University of the East. He stayed there for a year before transferring to NU, where Prince was a star player on the NU Bullpups. Part of the reason Ricci decided to join his kuya there is because family is really important to him. Ricci’s second-eldest brother Rasheed proudly says he and his siblings are family-oriented. At 20 years old, Ricci is the third in a brood of seven, all of whom are boys. Prince is the eldest at 23, followed by Rasheed, 21; Allen, 14; Angelo, 30 | DEC 2018 - JAN 2019 | CELEBRITY RADAR

12; Ashton, 10; and Riley, 5. (“Our parents adopted a girl noon kaso binawi siya ng birth parents niya, kaya malaki ‘yung age gap namin ni Allen,” Ricci shares.) Rasheed says Ricci loves his siblings—especially the younger ones—so much that he makes time to bond with them despite his busy schedule. Siyempre Ricci needs all the rest he can get kasi nga ang dami niyang ginagawa. But kapag may time siya, nag-bo-bonding kaming magkakapatid.” Rasheed, Ricci and Prince often eat out and watch movies together, so it was no surprise that they all ended up in the La Salle system. Ricci followed Prince to De La Salle University, where they suited up for the Green Archers in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP). At the time, Rasheed was already making waves in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) with the De La Salle University-College of Saint Benilde Blazers. Ricci’s athleticism caught the eye of sports reporters early on. In 2014, he was playing for La Salle Greenhills in the NCAA Juniors when a sportswriter named Peter Atencio published an article about him in the Manila Standard. In it, he wrote that Ricci could eventually outclass his brothers given his performance in that year’s tournament. He continued to collect similar accolades throughout his time with the Green Archers. However, Ricci went on a leave of absence from the Taft-based squad in February of this year, reportedly because he was in violation of certain school policies. According to a statement from DLSU, varsity athletes are barred from entering sponsorship agreements. Soon after, Ricci also released a statement explaining his decision to leave the Green Archers. According to him, he had “no choice” but to leave in order to honor his commitments and respect the new team rules. Eventually, Ricci found his way to the University of the Philippines Diliman, where he joined the Fighting Maroons. However, he will have to wait until 2019 to see action in the UAAP, owing to the league’s residency rules. In the meantime, Ricci is focusing on his studies and playing in what he calls “pocket leagues” to keep his skills sharp. When asked what he does in his spare time, Ricci jokes, “Natutulog. Hindi, sa totoo lang, hindi ko pwedeng pabayaan acads ko because of how it is in UP. So I study a lot when I’m not practicing or playing in an actual game. But when I do have time to rest, I watch Netflix or play golf.”

Aside from Netflix and chilling, Ricci found another way to pass the time. He joined the cast of Joven Tan’s ‘Otlum,’ a horror movie from a new film production outfit called Horseshoe Studios. It’s one of the eight entries to the 2018 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF). “Kapag nag-transfer ka from one UAAP school to another, hindi ka pa pwedeng maglaro the following year. Kailangan mo muna mag-residency ng one year. In my case, kailangan kong mag-stay sa UP ng one year bago ako makapaglaro for the Fighting Maroons in the UAAP. I had some time to kill, which is why I was able to do this movie,” Ricci explains. According to Ricci, ‘Otlum’ is a fresh take on the horror genre. It’s about a group of friends who dare each other to stay in a haunted house. “‘Otlum’ is ‘multo’ spelled backwards, kasi ‘yung millennials ngayon, ganu’n magsalita, ‘di ba? Kaya ‘yun ‘yung ginawang title nitong movie. Anyway, Sir Dondon Monteverde, my manager, asked me if I wanted to try something new. Eh that was actually the reason I transferred to UP, because gusto ko ng chance na matuto ng iba’t-ibang bagay.

So when Sir Dondon asked me if I was open to trying acting, nag-oo ako kasi I saw it as another learning experience.” Ricci says that he never in a million years thought he would end up on the silver screen. “Pero mahilig ako manood ng Tagalog movies when I was a kid growing up in Isabela. Horror movies pa nga ‘yung madalas kong panoorin noon, eh. In ‘Otlum,’ Ricci shares top billing with some of his generation’s most promising young actors, such as Buboy Villar, Danzel Fernandez, Jerome Ponce, Kiray Celis, Michelle Vito, Vivoree Esclito and Yñigo Delen. Irma Adlawan and John Estrada are also part of the cast. Ricci says he had a fun time on set because one of his co-stars was an acquaintance of his. Pero walang nadevelop sa aming dalawa ni Michelle, ha,” Ricci adds with a smile before anyone can ask what he thought of the lovely young actress. While he admits to struggling at times during filming, he managed to keep pace with everyone else because they were all so helpful to him. “For me, medyo nanibago ako nu’ng gitna, kasi at first kami pa lang ni Danzel yung magkasama. Nakasingit lang ako ng quick workshop before we started shooting.” Some UAAP standouts from previous seasons have appeared on TV. Would he be open to doing a teleserye now that he’s gotten his feet wet in the acting world? Sadly, Ricci says no because he has to prioritize his basketball career and his studies. For now, he’s having a blast doing mall shows for ‘Otlum’ and he’s looking forward to participating in the MMFF’s annual Parade of Stars. “Pero nag-enjoy naman ako sa ginawa ko, and even if hindi ko pa rin napapanood ‘yung buong movie, happy naman ako sa performance ko. Pero ewan ko pa sa future kung ano ba gusto ko in terms of showbiz. Right now kasi basketball lang talaga nasa isip ko. Well, wherever life takes Ricci, we’re certain things will be a slam dunk for this hot hunk. 32 | DEC 2018 - JAN 2019 | CELEBRITY RADAR

Mahusay mag-Ingles at matatas mag-Tagalog, kahit lumaki sa Vienna, dahil German ang kanyang ama who was a light designer at Vienna State Opera, but sadly passed away when she was seven years old. Marie and her mom share the same birthday and she hopes to visit their relatives and friends in Vienna on her 18th birthday next year. In the mean time, Marie will go through an extensive acting workshop here in Manila in preparation for her dream showbiz career.

ome years back, Joshua Colet was one of several young stars who were being groomed for stardom by the Kapamilya network.

Nang matapos ang “Oka2kat,” the offers slowed down a bit. Instead of worrying, the young actor decided to go back to school. Nag-enroll si Joshua sa University of the Philippines Diliman, kung saan naging bahagi rin siya ng varsity judo team. However, showbiz came calling again when he was in his senior year. Acting is in his blood— Joshua is the eldest son of veteran character actor Noel Colet, and his mother Jenny graduated from UP with a Theater Arts degree—so he couldn’t help but answer the call. “Dumating ‘yung “La Luna Sangre,” so I prioritized it muna. So nu’ng may dumating na offer, I figured I should take it. Strike the iron while it’s hot, ‘di ba?” he says. However, Joshua clarified that he never really turned his back on acting during his entire stay in UP. “Throughout my college life, marami naman akong raket, eh. I also did musical theater. Never naman nawala yung acting because I always knew ‘yun ‘yung gusto ko talagang gawin. Pero ginusto ko munang magtapos ng college.” When Joshua signed on to do “La Luna Sangre,” he was originally only supposed to play a minor role.

CROSSHEAD

Nagtuluy-tuloy na nga ang pagbabalik-showbiz ni Joshua. Mula sa “La Luna Sangre” (kung saan gumanap siya bilang isa sa mga Moonchasers, a group of vampire hunters led by Daniel Padilla’s character), he was cast in “Araw Gabi.” Now Joshua is one of the

male leads on “Los Bastardos.” He says this show is special to him because it marks his first time to play a lead role. Halos isang buwan din akong tengga, so medyo kinabahan ako,” he confesses. “Actually, I was already looking for work in other places, tapos biglang tumawag sa akin si Direk Ruel Bayani. He told me he was considering me as one of the leads in his unit’s next teleserye. Pakiramdam niya daw ready na ako. Siyempre, I was speechless at first. I was really stunned kasi hindi ko nga in-expect.” Most people don’t know that he has been acting since 2011, so they always ask him how it feels to land such a big role as a newbie. But it’s understandable kasi kahit matagal na nga ako dito, most of my career was spent playing supporting roles. But it didn’t come easy to him. Direk Ruel didn’t hand Joshua the role of Connor Davide on a silver platter. He had to work for it. “I was told that I would have to audition for the role. I was excited kaya pinaghandaan ko talaga siya. Binigyan ako ng apat na monologue the day before the audition—one for each of the four brothers. I read for all of them, pero magkakasama na kami nina Albie Casiño, Diego Loyzaga at Marco

Gumabao noon. We auditioned at the same time. About a couple of weeks afterward, we were told we made it and who we’d be portraying, tapos storycon na agad. It all happened so fast, which was overwhelming. Medyo matagal nga bago nag-sink in sa akin na may nakuha akong project na ganito, as in big break talaga.” Aside from the fact that his character Connor is a major player on the show, Joshua is happy to be part of “Los Bastardos” because it allows him to learn from some of the industry’s best and brightest. Rather than get starstruck around them, iba ang nangyayari kay Joshua kapag kasama niya sa set ang mga tulad nina Jake Cuenca at Ronaldo Valdez, actors he looks up to. “I see myself as a sponge. When I’m surrounded by people like that, I try to soak up as much from them as I can. Like with Jake, I tried to get to know him and learn from him, because he’s someone I really want to emulate if tumagal ako sa showbiz. Kasi ang ganda ng career path niya and he really chooses his projects well. So I use Jake and the veterans we work with as sources of inspiration and knowledge. Si Jake naman, he shares advice and information willingly. If you ask him, magbibigay talaga siya. I’m lucky and thankful he and everyone else we work with welcomed me with open arms.” Medyo maraming daring scenes si Joshua sa “Los Bastardos,” but he says he’s fine with it. Pero before that, we used to go around on mountain bikes. Yun ang naging bonding time namin before. Recently, I bought my own motorcycle kasi I saw how convenient it is.

He’s also comfortable with being seen as a sex symbol of sorts. “Sanay na rin ako sa mga ganu’n coming from “Araw Gabi,” sexy show din naman kasi ‘yun. Actually, when I auditioned for “La Luna Sangre,” they made me take off my shirt din. Ako naman, I’ve been confident about my body ever since. One of my main things in live is to take care of my body and my health. Plus I was an athlete pa for four years, so nu’ng sinabi sa akin na sexy yung “Araw Gabi,” I was, like, ‘OK.’ As long as nag-e-enjoy sila sa panonood sa akin at nagagawa ko ang trabaho ko nang maayos, that’s all that matters to me.”

Family also matters a great deal to Joshua. He’s the eldest of three, and although his younger brother Bryan— yung sumunod sa kanya in terms of age—has no interest in showbiz whatsoever, the two remain close. Having said that, Joshua admits that he has more in common with his youngest sibling, fellow Star Magic artist Ashley. 42 | DEC 2018 - JAN 2019 | CELEBRITY RADAR

“Bryan is twenty years old and he’s studying Computer Engineering at the Technological Institute of the Philippines. Wala siyang balak mag-showbiz. I always tell her to be patient and professional.” As Joshua tells it, showbiz is kind of the family business. “Both of my parents showbiz talaga. My mom Jenny studied theater sa UP Diliman, so nandu’n ‘yung careers naming lahat. Maganda naman relationship namin ni Papa; actually, karamihan ng alam ko when it comes to acting nanggaling sa kanya. Malaking bahagi ng acting career ko ‘yun. Recently he appeared in “Halik,” so he’s also still acting. Pag may raket, go. Joshua adds that his father taught him a lot. “Stay grounded and know your worth. Kasi in this industry marami diyan ang gusto kang gawing big star kapalit ng indecent proposals. Acting isn’t the only thing he and

Traffic lang ang hindi kinakaya ni Joshua. Pagdating sa acting, wala siyang inuurungan, thanks to the training he received from his mentors Laurice Guillen, Pen Medina and Star Magic’s Artist Training Head Rahyan Carlos. Marami siyang dream projects and roles. “I want to do action movies, ‘yung parang ‘Mission Impossible.’ Payag din ako gawin ang sarili kong stunts because of my athletic background. I know how to fall down properly and take a punch.” In fact, when asked who his showbiz crush is, mabilis sumagot ang binata. “I’ve known Sue Ramirez ever since we did “Oka2kat” together. She’s quite the character. She’s not afraid to show everyone who she is, and I love that. Masarap siyang kasama kasi wala siyang arte sa katawan. Aside from that, maganda siya and of course talented din.” Right now, however, walang girlfriend si Joshua. In 2017, he broke up with his last girlfriend because they wanted different things out of life. They were together for nearly four years, but Joshua says he felt like the relationship was holding him back from what he really wanted to do, which is acting. Joshua says he doesn’t want to end up in a relationship like that ever again. “Kasi the girl I was with, she’s really into school talaga. She wanted me to stop showbiz to focus on my studies. I wouldn’t say na it was a bad relationship; magkaiba lang ‘yung goals and priorities namin. After that, naisip ko na if I get into another relationship, I wouldn’t be able to show my full potential din. Plus because I’m a leading man, it might not benefit me to have a significant other right now. I want to focus on myself and grow by myself first.” With his role on “Los Bastardos,” he’s definitely growing by leaps and bounds. H

t appears there’s nothing 23-year-old Ryan Kolton can’t do when he puts his heart and soul into it. Kaya naman siya naging in-demand at successful na actor at model na nagkaroon ng opportunities na magtrabaho all over the world. He’s part Filipino and he’s also of American, Spanish and Ukrainian descent. Pero kahit hindi siya full-blooded Filipino, Pinoy na Pinoy naman siya sa isip, salita at gawa—which is why he has his heart set on becoming a permanent fixture in the local showbiz scene.

ON HIS WAY

Nakahiligan niya rin ang manood ng iba’t-ibang pelikula to get a feel for showbiz. “I’ve been drawn to the arts since I was young,” he says. “Whether it was through creative outlets such as theater and writing, or physical outlets such as dance or martial arts, I was always learning, researching, practicing and performing. I also loved everything about movies. I loved the scripts, the plots, and espe44 | DEC 2018 - JAN 2019 | CELEBRITY RADAR

cially the characters. I enjoyed watching them face dilemmas and obstacles. All of those were things I cherished from an early age, so it was only natural that I would find myself where I am today.” He was able to get parts in popular shows like “CSI” and “Law & Order.” He also has a ten-year run as a professional dancer under his belt. He grew up on a steady diet of stories about life in the Philippines from his grandmother, who is originally from Laguna. But it wasn’t until he received an offer that he couldn’t refuse that he finally pushed through with his plan. “Regarding the Philippines and why I chose to try and make a name for myself here, the credit would have to

go to both the amazing people who live here, who cheer me on and support me without rest; and to my lola. She and her stories were the original driving force that pushed me to come here in the first place. Thanks to them, I found a new home here and I’m proud to say that I’ll be here, God willing, for years to come.” God definitely seems to be willing, because Ryan is slowly but surely taking the Philippines by storm. Sa loob lamang ng dalawang buwan, Ryan’s face can be seen all over Metro Manila and beyond, thanks to campaigns he did with Mossimo and SM soon after arriving in the country. Ryan has also appeared on Philippine TV—most notably as a presenter for the 2018 PMPC Star Awards for Music, where he met Morissette Amon and other OPM artists—at nakapanayam na rin siya ng iba’t-ibang media outlets. “You know why? Liza’s perfect. Honestly, she’s the real deal. She’s a great actress and she’s nice. She defines what a true actor should be. She’s at the top of her game. I respect her a lot and it would

be an honor to work with her.” Kaya naman puspusan ang pag-aaral niya ng ating wika on his way to the top. “I just started learning Tagalog, which will be my fifth language as I can already speak English, Russian and Spanish. It’s quite the process, but I can actually understand a little bit of it already.”

OTHER PURSUITS

Meron siyang knack for business. Sa katunayan nga ay CEO si Ryan ng isang multimedia company na tinayo niya last year called Hit the Ground. “I built it from the ground up. It’s now at the forefront of modern-day creative consulting crossed with hybrid media marketing, and as CEO I’m on the front lines of it all. I build campaigns and creative marketing strategies, manage a team of highly efficient creatives and have had the honor to deal with some of the best Fortune 500 companies of today.” Ryan is also quite well known in the sports community thanks to his time spent as an international mixed martial arts fighter. Back in the day, Ryan was a high-ranking fighter who participated in tournaments across Europe, Latin America and the USA. He also grew up playing basketball and soccer, and when he was in college, he competed in rowing and track and field events. “Away from the business, I like high elevation hiking and skydiving. I’ve hiked to different peaks around the world and skydived six times to date.” Busilak ang kalooban ni Ryan. Aside from acting and sports, passion din niya tumulong sa ibang tao. He takes care of his community here and abroad dahil naniniwala siya na it’s important to give back. He volunteers for different charities like Habitat for Humanity (kung saan tumutulong si Ryan magtayo ng libreng pabahay para sa mga nangangailangan nito) and the Salvation Army, isang organisasyon sa USA that aims to provide the less fortunate with clothes, food and other important resources. He also partnered with UNICEF.

Cardiology and science in general have always fascinated me and were always close to my heart—no pun intended. But God has a plan for all of us, and He wanted me to go into the arts. Maybe I can be a doctor in my next life, but in this one, I could end up playing one in the movies or on TV. You never know.” That said, he recognizes that there are benefits to being in the public eye. “One cannot simply do whatever he pleases anymore as he must now keep in mind that his actions and words can influence others’ behavior,” Ryan says. “However, what causes such limits can also be a positive thing. Being able to influence others comes with having a career like this, and it’s not to be taken lightly. I think that’s probably the best part of being an actor and model—having the ability to expand on ideas and issues and be an advocate for change.” Para sa kanya, kahit marami siyang kailangang i-overcome na challenges, worth it pa rin kasi not only does he get to influence others, but he also gets something else on top of that.

“In both acting and in modeling, there are many challenges to face and circumvent. For example, it’s a challenge to maintain the values one holds dear in the face of constant scrutiny. However, as long as one can say that he or she wakes up every morning loving what they do, then it’s all worth it. I’m happy to say I wake up feeling like that. I wake up smiling because I get to do something that I truly love.” Nakatakda siya gumawa ng tatlong pelikula, all of which are scheduled to enter the pre-production phase next year. Ryan’s advice to those who want to pursue their own dreams is this: “Be your own biggest fan and don’t give up. Ignore those who will try to bring you down. Stay true to yourself. Remember this quote: ‘Sometimes under-preparation is good. It instills fear and fear is galvanizing.’ Ryan’s star is definitely on the rise, no doubt about it. H

Krista Ranillo’s New Life TEXT: ALEX VALENTIN BROSAS

S

ince turning her back on showbiz to lead a quiet life in the US, actress Kris Ranillo has not returned to the Philippines, not even for a quick visit. But that’s not because she doesn’t want to. Rather, it’s because her new life in the land of the free keeps her pretty busy. “I haven’t been back because if I haven’t been pregnant, I’ve been busy breastfeeding and taking care of my kids. Besides, they’re still too young to travel. My husband and I plan to take them to the Philippines, but not until they’re a little older,” say ni Krista when Celebrity Radar caught up with her via social media. Krista’s family moved to the US earlier than she did, settling in the Big Apple back in 2009.

SPECIAL THANKS TO MS. SUZETTE RANILLO

“I used to visit them a lot,” she says.

MOTHERHOOD

She shared that her husband is the CEO and founder of Island Pacific Supermarket na mayroong 18 locations in Las Vegas, Northern California and Southern California. “He’s very busy and dedicated to his profession. He started the business by himself. We also have several Philhouse locations which serve home-cooked Filipino meals and Crab Mentality, a seafood restaurant. He’s a wonderful husband and an even better father. No matter how busy he is he’s always there for the important stuff—doctor’s visits, family vacays, school events.”

They have four kids: 3 boys and 1 girl.

“I love it! They keep me busy, but motherhood has changed me so much. My kids have taught me a lot about life, particularly about being patient and not sweating the small stuff.”

“The eldest is Nate, who’s seven; then six-year-old Nolan; then Natalie, who, at four, is the only girl and her daddy’s favorite; and then two-year-old Nash. It’s crazy to have such a big family but I really wouldn’t have it any other way!”

Ngayon ay nakatira si Krista at ang family niya sa Valencia, CA, about 30 minutes from Los Angeles.

Maganda naman ang set-up ng family ni Krista and she’s thankful that she has “full-time help at home, and my parents are hands-on grandparents, so my kids are definitely blessed to have people around them who love them so much.”

“It’s a great community,” she enthused. “We have a lake surrounding the house, so we always get ducks and rabbits in our backyard.”

the business. I also volunteer a lot in school, so that keeps me busy. My priority now is the children, so when they’re a little older, that’s when I can be more involved in business matters. Sometimes I’m so excited for them to be all grown up so I’ll be able to do more things, but I know when that time comes I’ll miss the days when they were little so I just try to enjoy every moment of it,” she said. “Moving to the US wasn’t a big adjustment because I’ve been going back and forth from the Philippines since I was young. I even went to school here. Plus my father’s side of the family is here in San Francisco, while my mother’s side is in Los Angeles. The only relatives I have back home in the Philippines are my grandmother Gloria Sevilla and my Tita Suzette Ranillo.”

AT HOME WITH FELLOW FILIPINOS For Krista, para pa rin siyang nasa Pilipinas dahil maraming Pinoy siyang nakakasalamuha sa US.

“I have Filipino friends here, which is very nice. Iba pa rin when you have friends you can connect with culturally, and who know what you’re talking about when you reminisce about the Philippines. “It’s funny because whenever I walk into any of our stores it reminds me so much of home! Aside from being surrounded by Filipino products, it’s the Filipino friendliness and hospitality that truly reminds me of how it is in the Philippines.” And since she grew up celebrating Christmas as early as September in the Philippines, dala-dala ni Krista ang tradisyong iyon sa Big Apple. “I even told my husband to start playing Christmas songs in September because that’s what we do in Manila! We celebrate Christmas even if it’s a few months early! He never knew that because he moved here when he was ten.”

SENSE OF FULFILLMENT

For Krista, fulfillment is “raising a family and being a supportive wife to my husband.”

“I’m still in touch with my friends through Facebook and Instagram. It’s nice to be able to catch up with them even if they’re back home.”

While she admits missing acting and other things in the Philippines (“I miss the beaches and the food! Nothing can beat that!”), hindi pa rin niya nakikita ang sarili niya living away from her family.

So what does she remember most about her former life as an actress?

CATCHING UP WITH FRIENDS

Even though she’s far from home, hindi rin naman totally disconnected si Krista sa mga kaibigan niya na nasa Pilipinas. Thanks to advancements in modern technology, she keeps abreast with what’s happening.

“I remember it being a busy but empty life. It was all about working but not being fulfilled. I enjoyed showbiz, but I sort of knew acting wasn’t something I would do forever. I wanted to be a pre-school teacher or a pediatrician! That’s why I took a communications and psychology course in Ateneo, because I wanted to work in a pre-school setting.” When asked if she prefers the peace and quiet of her life in the US, her instant reply was, “Yes, of course!” H

CELEBRITY RADAR | DEC 2018 - JAN 2019 | 49

t has often been said that the best way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Jervi’s relationship with her British boyfriend is proof of that. Tuwang-tuwa ito tuwing pinagluluto siya ng nobyo niya, so when she has time, she tries to return the favor by cooking one of her specialties. Kaladkaren is a dab hand in the kitchen herself, a trait she explains she inherited from her mother. When the Celebrity Radar team visited her and her boyfriend at home, she cooked up a batch of prawns for us. Favorite kasi naming magkakapatid itong sugpo. Lagi niya itong niluluto tuwing may special occasion kami. She uses real tomatoes; ako I use tomato sauce. I tried cooking this for my boyfriend the first time he visited me here in the Philippines,

and he loved it very much.” Jervi says she used to cook for her boyfriend more often before her schedule got hectic. “It’s difficult because we usually do it in the afternoon, and these days I need to sleep by that time because I’ve been up since before the crack of dawn. But yes, cooking is and will always be one of our favorite activities as a couple. Sometimes we’ll even invite friends over and we’ll cook for them, then we’ll drink. Because that’s something I adapted from the British, their culture—they’re always drinking! Sometimes they’ll be drinking beer, champagne, or wine, or something else, but trust me, lagi silang may hawak na inumin. Everyone in his family drinks. I don’t really know why; maybe it’s a social thing.” Jervi’s boyfriend explains: “My father’s father was quite a

drinker, but not in a bad way. Not like he was an alcoholic or something. He never got ill from doing it, but he was a regular drinker in the sense that he’d have, like, four pints a day. My grandfather passed that on to my father and his brother, and then to me, yeah. It’s also a naval tradition to drink, and I’m a seaman.” Jervi says her boyfriend isn’t a picky eater in the strictest sense of the word, but his taste in food is definitely British. “Chicken and pork adobo, type niya ‘yun, and kaldereta. But you know what, he struggles to eat rice. It’s not like he dislikes it, but it fills him up so easily. He doesn’t crave it like Filipinos do.” One thing is clear—whatever Jervi prepares automatically becomes her boyfriend’s favorite food. Ah, love. H

Kaladkaren’s Saucy Sugpo Ingredients: 1 pound large shrimps, trimmed of tendrils 1 tablespoon oil 1 medium onion, peeled and sliced thinly 3 to 4 cloves garlic, peeled and minced 1 teaspoon fish sauce ½ cup tomato sauce 2 tablespoons oyster sauce Salt Directions: 1. Wash and drain the shrimps very well. 2. In a pan, heat the oil over medium heat. Sautee onions and garlic until tender and translucent. Add fish sauce and cook, stirring regularly, for about two minutes. 3. Add tomato sauce and simmer until it’s reduced and thickened. 4. Add shrimps and keep cooking. Stir to combine until the shrimps are coated with tomato sauce and their color has turned pink. 5. Add oyster sauce and cook for five more minutes. 6. Add salt if needed.

Pero kahit sandamakmak na ang mga ganu’ng video, not everyone who goes viral manages to parlay their 15 minutes of fame into a career. Jervi Li—otherwise known as Kaladkaren, impersonator of the Kapamilya network’s own Karen Davila—is one of those who did. Earlier this year, a video of Jervi impersonating Karen went viral. In it, the former is crossing a river while narrating the experience, tulad ng ginagawa ni Karen sa “The Correspondents.” Eventually, Jervi and Karen met face-to-face, when the former guested on the latter’s radio show “Pasada Sais Trenta.” Soon after, Jervi began landing showbiz gigs. Currently, she has several endorsements under her belt, at co-host din siya ng “Umagang Kay Ganda” sa ABS-CBN. At the end of the day, when she’s done with work, Jervi goes home to her loft—and, when he’s in town, to the arms of her loving boyfriend, a tall, fair-haired British man who has been the object of her affections for six years and counting. OPPOSITES ATTRACT Jervi has always been open about the fact that she’s in a relationship, but this marks the first time she and her beau have allowed a magazine to feature their home—an airy, spacious loft in a high-rise condominium located in the heart of Eastwood City—in its pages. The first thing one notices upon entering the loft is a wall made up of floor-to-ceiling windows directly across from the entrance. Thanks to those windows, the loft has no shortage of natural light in the mornings and afternoons. Tastefully decorated in black,

red and white, this loft is where Jervi and her boyfriend made a home for themselves, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. “We’ve only been renting this flat for a short while. We started in an ugly flat. Actually, it was fine, but it wasn’t as big or fabulous as this one. One floor lang siya and it was a little smaller than this one. We’re in the process of saving up to buy our own place,” shares Jervi. Jervi explains that’s the reason she and her boyfriend have been working hard at their jobs. As nice as this loft is, it’s not theirs—they’re just renting it. Jervi and her boyfriend talked about it, and they decided that buying their own place would be a good investment. “A lot of people have told me to buy a car or start a business kasi medyo kumikita naman tayo. Pero ako, I’m not ashamed of commuting or using ride-sharing apps. It’s really not my priority to buy a car. Mas gusto kong makabili ng sarili kong tirahan. We’re talking to someone about it at sana we’ll be able to sort it out before the year ends,” says Jervi. “Besides, there’s no point in owning a car in this city. We get along fine using public transportation anyway,” her boyfriend chimes in, giving Jervi an affectionate kiss on the cheek. Jervi and her boyfriend aren’t shy about being sweet towards each other, even with other people present. Looking at them, you would think that their relationship is smooth sailing all the way, but they’re actually one in saying that’s not the case—especially in the beginning. Jervi says she and her boyfriend are different in many ways, kaya kinailangan nilang magadjust sa isa’t-isa para maiwasan ang mga arguments. “Magkaiba kami when it comes to timekeeping. He’s more organized than I am. That’s his personality, eh. He really likes sticking to a routine. I’m not able to do that because of my job—you know how erratic showbiz can be when it comes to schedules. Like, I wake up at different times on different days. Siya, he goes to bed and wakes up at the same time every day. So that’s one of our biggest differences.” “I’m a creature of habit,” her boyfriend says in his defense. “That has a lot to do with my job as well—I’m a crewman on a ship. But what I noticed about Filipinos in general is that they say, ‘Let’s meet somewhere and do this,’ then the plans change at the last minute. That’s bad for me because I do like routine, but it’s alright because I get to try something different. Being in the Philippines and being around Filipinos is always an adventure because you never know what’ll happen. On that note, I guess you could say that being with Jervi has helped me be more spontaneous and less rigid when it comes to timekeeping.” “In the same manner,” Jervi hastens to add, “he has helped me be more organized and on time, because I’m always late for everything, even to work. He once joked that I’d be late to my own funeral. In his country kasi, everyone and everything is on time. Even their buses are precisely on time! Here in the Philippines, as you know, it’s not like that. Everything is late here.”

MEET CUTE

Thankfully, opposites do attract in their case. When Jervi has free time, she chooses to spend it at home with her boyfriend. “We love to cook and eat together. Sometimes we’ll try different recipes together. But there are also times when we don’t really have to do anything. Like, he’ll sit at the table with his computer and I’ll lie down on the couch with my smartphone. Companionable silence, I think that’s what it’s called. Happy na kami doon. But most of the time, he and I will watch a movie before we sleep.” Jervi and her boyfriend met in 2012, when they were both in Hong Kong on vacation. According to Jervi, they were travelling with different people at the time, but when their eyes met, they felt an undeniable pull towards each other. Neither Jervi nor her boyfriend could explain it at the time, but whatever it was, it led him to hop on a plane to Manila just to be with her. That was in February 2013. A few months after that, it was Jervi’s turn to do the same thing. “So he went here to meet my family and friends, and then he was, like, ‘Maybe next time you can come to the UK with me.’ So I applied for a visa and stuff, and I was in the UK by May 2013,” shares Jervi. Jervi admits that she was nervous at the prospect of meeting her boyfriend’s inner circle. Meeting a significant other’s family and friends for the first time is always nerve-wracking, but for Jervi it was doubly so because her boyfriend is a foreigner. But as she soon discovered, she shouldn’t have been nervous at all because her boyfriend’s family turned out to be very welcoming. “It was very scary because it’s a different country and a different culture. Alam ko going in that everyone in his family is very educated and all of them are professionals, so I felt pressured to be the best version of myself. In the beginning I was quite shy. This picked us up at the train station and we had Mexican food at their house. I was happy because his father did some research before we arrived, so when he met me, he was CELEBRITY RADAR | DEC 2018 - JAN 2019 | 53

She studied that at Cambridge kasi.” Jervi shares that her boyfriend’s barkada also welcomed her with open arms. As she tells it, her sexuality was never an issue for any of his friends. Jervi fit seamlessly into their friend group, almost as if she had been there from the beginning. “We went on holiday with some of them in Bali, Indonesia. I wasn’t a celebrity or internet sensation at the time, but they knew all about my sexuality. Everyone knows naman. We never hid it from any of his friends and relatives, and I don’t think my sexuality was a problem for anyone on my side or his. It wasn’t a question or whatever. It wasn’t even a major topic of conversation. Some of my boyfriend’s friends did ask questions, like is it difficult to be a transwoman, ganu’n, but I didn’t mind that. They were just curious about what life is like for me in the Philippines, which is OK.”

THE SWEET LIFE

If one were to ask Jervi to describe life with her boyfriend in one word, she’d most likely go with “sweet.” She says he finds little ways to show her how much she means to him, no matter the circumstances. “He always cooks for me, which I appreciate because he makes very good food. I also appreciate the fact that although he often travels for work, he still makes an effort to stay in touch with me,” Jervi says. They’ve been a couple for six years, and in 2016, Jervi’s boyfriend splurged on a trip to Europe for their anniversary. “Of course I want to get married in the future. I don’t think it’s a distant possibility because being together for six years says a lot about our relationship. I think in every relationship dapat may goal kayo or plan, kasi kung wala, it’s like you’re just in limbo. But that’s just me speaking from a woman’s point of view. For me, marriage should be the end goal. If you don’t have plans to get married, then your relationship is pointless ‘di ba?” For his part, Jervi’s boyfriend jokes, “Why would you go and spoil something that’s good with marriage? I don’t know anyone who’s happily married. No, I’m just kidding. That’s a very British thing to say whenever the topic of marriage is brought up. But seriously, when it comes to her thoughts on marriage, I think she’s speaking like a true Filipina woman.” But although Jervi and her boyfriend have yet to really broach the topic of marriage in any serious way, they have talked about starting a family. Jervi shares that they came up with a plan to have kids of their own. However, when it comes to kids, they want different things. Jervi wants to have a little version of her boyfriend running around, whereas he would like to have a girl—someone he can treat like “a little princess,” as he put it. “We were thinking we’d get the egg of my sister and use his sperm to fertilize it. That’s really my plan, but my sister doesn’t know it yet,” laughs Jervi. “I came up with that after I read somewhere na your sibling has ninety-nine percent of your genes. We don’t know yet when we’ll have kids; maybe five years from now. Again, it depends on a lot of things.” As of this writing, Jervi and her boyfriend are gearing up to spend the holidays together in their loft. Last year, they both went to the UK to celebrate Christmas with his family. Despite their packed schedules, they almost always manage to spend Christmas and New Year’s together. “The English Christmas is bit quieter than ours kasi they celebrate on Christmas morning. When you wake up on the twenty-fifth, everyone drinks champagne while they open their gifts. Then we’ll all dress up for dinner while his parents cook. It’s not really more formal, it’s just very different from how the Philippines does it. We’ll eat traditional British food and play board games, things like that.” Jervi’s boyfriend explains that the Filipino Christmas has more of a lively atmosphere than what he’s used to. He remembers that he had a blast partying with Jervi’s family one time. 54 | DEC 2018 - JAN 2019 | CELEBRITY RADAR

“Christmas in the Philippines is very different compared to how we celebrate it in the UK. It was nice to be with her family. I got along really well with her father and little brother. There was lots to eat, and we did karaoke. I will say though that I prefer my traditional English Christmas. Not because I didn’t enjoy the holidays with her family, but because you tend to like what you know. I’d say an English Christmas is less of a party than the Filipino Christmas. In the UK, you come and see family, but most of the time everyone will gather at one family’s house. Depends on who’s hosting the festivities that year.” According to Jervi’s boyfriend, there was only one time he wasn’t able to spend Christmas with her—and as he tells it, it was the worst one he’d ever experienced because he wasn’t by her side. “There was one time I was working in a small town in Norway, there was a bonfire and everything. I had fun, but it was a shame because she wasn’t with me. Thank goodness for modern technology, because we were able to stay in touch even though we were thousands of miles apart.” Jervi admits that being away from each other is hard, but says she remains grateful for it because in a way, it’s good for their relationship. “It’s a good thing din because it forces us to take a breather from each other. If he’s here in Manila kasi, we’ll spend practically all of our time together. But when he’s not around, of course I miss him terribly. Having said that, having to spend time apart makes us both look forward to the time when we’ll be together again. Everyone always asks me how we survive being in a long-distance relationship when so many others in similar situations end up calling it quits because hindi nila talaga kinakaya ‘yung ganu’n. Kami, OK kami because most of the time, he and I know when we’ll get to see each other again. That’s if he sticks to his normal routine or schedule ha. Bottom line, I think the distance actually helps us grow stronger as a couple.” Jervi and her boyfriend have a healthy relationship. That can only bode well for the future of this couple. For now, they’re perfectly happy living the sweet life in their current place. H

Magbabalik Dubai si Maja on December 12 for her concert in Dubai World Center na gaganapin on December 14, with her special guests, Pooh and Enchong Dee. For Christmas and New Year celebration, plano rin daw mag-out-of-thecountry ni Maja kasama ang kanyang mga kapatid. Pero baka hindi raw sila sa Canada pumunta this year kung saan based ang mommy nila with their Canadian stepfather. Last holiday season daw sila nag-bakasyon magkakapatid doon. TEXT: ALEX VALENTIN BROSAS

K

nown far and wide as a no-nonsense mom, singer Jenine Desiderio may be “femme” on the outside, but she has proven to all and sundry that her blows against her daughter’s bashers can be “fatale.”

Growing up, Jenine did not have the opportunity to relish the care of her mom who died of cervical cancer when she was six. That’s why she can’t share much kung ano ang natutunan niya sa kanyang ina. “She was very malambing, but she was a spanking type of mom which led me to decide that when I become a mom myself, I will not spank my own children. Instead, I will communicate with and explain to them what they did wrong. That’s how I did things. My firstborn grew up without being hit, except for a time when she was about thirteen. And it was asked for and well-deserved, the details of which I cannot share,” she related. Jenine’s firstborn is Janella Salvador, her daughter with rock star Juan Miguel Salvador.

“I’m kinda mababaw, so I truly enjoy moments when I play with my kids, like when we’re horsing around or sharing jokes. I love it when they hug me and write love notes for me saying how much they love me. I love it when they’re still small and make me feel like a superhero. And of course, when they start achieving in whatever field they go into. I want to mold them into their best selves by imparting whatever knowledge I have. I guess the ultimate joy is to see that they turn out to be good people who love God.” Raising a son and a daughter all by herself can be a struggle. Here, in our one-on-one interview, Jenine bares her soul as a working mom out to give the best life there is for her daughter and son. Who is harder to deal with, your daughter or your son? They both have their own degrees of difficulty. When my son was born, I thought I knew everything about parenting having

Being a mom of two, one girl and one boy (Russel), and raising them all by herself, Jenine’s experience as a mom is no walk in the park but still she gets to experience the joys of motherhood.

“When you’re a mom, it’s not called sacrifice. It’s called love.” already raised one child. But I turned out to be wrong. g actress’ It was a breeze un yo e th th wi Jenine Janella and Mom previous film, raising Janella. She Alonte, in their co-star, Ronnie s,” in 2017. was a good kid, an “Bloody Crayon academic achiever, and we both spoke the language of music. I had so much fun teaching her songs because she easily learned and picked them up. She even developed her own style of singing and I was just awed by God’s generosity with her! I had a ball dressing her up too. It was like having my own living, trainable doll. Janella and Russel are very different. My daughter is an introvert who is quiet and takes a while to warm up to people, while my son is very sociable. No matter where we are, it would only take a minute or two and he’d already be talking to someone. Even as an infant when he didn’t know how to talk yet, he’d wave, squeal, smile and call the attention of guards and simply anyone he passes in the mall. And we’d leave a trail of smiling people behind. He’s a charmer. What are house rules that are almost always disobeyed? How do you deal with it? House rules? Do we have house rules? Parang wala naman. The usual lang. Same rules with most households. Did you mean the rules mentioned in Twitter? Those weren’t house rules. They were agreed upon between all involved. First, always ask permission from me out of respect and let me know where you are, or where you’re planning to go and who you’re with. If it’s not bad for you, then you’ll be allowed to go. Always. Second, no solo time with any boy. Wala pa kasi siyang ini-introduce na boyfriend so no reason to be alone with any boy. In what way do you see yourself in your daughter? I don’t. Haha! Janella and I are very different from each other. We think and do things differently. How has motherhood changed you? When I was single, I had all the time in the world to do what I want when I want. It was all about me. But when I became a mother, my priorities changed. My life was all about my children. Like, I would scrimp on myself so I could buy things for them. I

rarely went out with my friends because I had to tutor my son and even Janella when she was still in school. When she was just starting in showbiz, I personally drove for her everywhere for a good three years. I kind of lost myself during that time but I didn’t mind because it was for my princess. When you’re a mom, it’s not called sacrifice. It’s called love. What did you have to forego when you had your children? When I had Janella, I felt like that was the end of me as an artist. They say the public loses interest—especially in women—when you settle down and start a family. I told myself it was fine. I had my moments of fame anyway, and maybe that was that. But God heart my heart. I still wanted to sing. When Janella was four months old, I was asked to record “Hindi Ako Si Darna” and it went to the top of the charts for many weeks. Did you make your children do household chores when they were still young? Why? Yes. Holidays like Christmas, New Year, I send all our helpers home to their families. So I’m all alone with my children on those days. I cook. Janella washes the dishes. Russel feeds the pets. Their rooms are also their sole responsibility. They have to keep their own rooms tidy. It’s good to give them chores to teach them to be responsible. What do you do if and when you have trust issues with your children? Do you give them second chances? I talk to them. I actually give them many chances, not just two, but I of course become wary of their actions. At some point, they have to prove themselves worthy of my trust again. What do you want your children to develop, personality-wise? I want them to be independent yet caring, self-sufficient and spiritual. This is a crazy world we’re living in, so I want them to be strong enough to face challenges on their own. But they’ll also have my support as long as I live. Do you let your kids explain their side when you argue with them? Yes. They think I don’t listen, but I do. The problem is, they claim they listen to what I say, but they don’t really accept and understand it. They don’t want me to just listen to them but they want me to do what they want, totally disregarding the point I was CELEBRITY RADAR | DEC 2018 - JAN 2019 | 59

Probably because we already did many times but the problem persisted and going on social media was my only way of venting my frustration about it. There are also instances when talking to the other party just isn’t possible. Our setup is not exactly the same or as simple as most parent-child set-ups. Janella being in showbiz totally changes the equation. So talking at home is not as simple as most people would think. The only time she’s home, she’d be asleep only for a few hours then when she wakes up she would rush to go somewhere again for work. Finding time to talk on the phone isn’t easy either. At what point did you realize making patol to bashers is an exercise in futility? Your pre-judgement is showing. Hehe. Making patol to me is not futile as long as I’ve stated my truth and it’s out there for all to see. Then I stop, regardless of what else they say.

trying to drive across which is actually for their own good and guided not just by what they want, but also by what’s socially acceptable. You’re kind of vocal about your daughter on social media, to the point that you get bashed for it. Would you want to try turning the other cheek or would you continue confronting bashers on your social media accounts? Does the term patola irritate you? Being patola sometimes is necessary. I don’t just make patol for the sake of arguing. I only speak up to correct something wrong that’s being said about us. It was said in social media, so I also answer in social media. It’s our reputation being publicly maligned so why wouldn’t I say something? During that Twitter controversy last year, people asked me why I aired dirty laundry in public. If you look at the original posts, they were mere safe ventings on my account just like everybody else. No identities. Some say, “But it’s obvious!” Obvious isn’t admissible in court. Probably obvious to you but not to the rest of the world. And yet I’m accused of the crime when they were the ones who actually identified the other parties. I just responded to their comments. I was also asked, why not just talk about it and resolve it privately? 60 | DEC 2018 - JAN 2019 | CELEBRITY RADAR

Do you only give Janella a certain amount of money as her allowance? Do you still manage her finances? She has no allowance. She has full access to her own money because she has her own ATM, credit and debit cards. Not just now but even before. This will teach her also how to be responsible with her money. All I do is just keep track to make sure everything’s in order and paid for. I also advise her on what to do with her money. I don’t manage her financial affairs without her knowledge. Everything’s transparent between us in this area. I also have my own money which I earn and not from her. I am not dependent on her as some were insinuating. My accounts are separate from hers. I had my own investments even before she started earning in showbiz and luckily I’m still actively working and earning continuously as an artist. What are the tips you can give other parents, especially single parents out there in raising their kids? I can’t really give tips because I believe each case is unique. What works for one may not work for others. Different strokes for different folks. Single parents, stay strong. Not exactly easy being 2-in-1. But with God, all things are possible. Will you continue to be a protective mom? Aren’t all moms protective? Isn’t that our main duty? I’ll always protect my children as needed, when needed. What are your fears as a mom, and how do you deal with them? Just like any other mom, I want my kids to be safe all the time, in the company of good people. What is your ultimate wish for your childen? To be happy and successful in whatever they choose to do. H

Rey of Sunshine

FROM BAND TO SONGWRITING

PAGSUBOK

QUIET TIME

Taga Bulacan ang hitmaker. It was a rocky road para sa kanya dahil nanggaling siya sa broken home. Maraming nambu-bully. Kuwento niya, mismong mga kamag anak niya, hinuhusgahan sya. It was not easy. “I had a troubled life when I was young. My parents were separated. With no moral compass I often wondered how I managed. “My outlet was to play guitar and sing all day. Being a professional singer/recording artist never crossed my mind. It was not among my options.”

DETERMINED

“I made a promise to myself long ago, that I will be a “superman” in this field. That I will do everything in my power to achieve as many things as long as I live.” Nagbunga naman talaga ang kanyang pagiging superman. Look at him now!

He likes his “alone time” because that’s where he gets his peace. The hitmaker says, “Hindi naman masyadong malayo sa showbiz persona ko ‘yung real me. Yung totoong ako ay mahilig mag-isa by choice. Mas masaya ako when I am at peace.” “Others may fear being alone, not me. I am always looking forward to the ‘showbiz me’ to finish his job so that I can spend my ‘alone time.’” “The future, the unknown. BUT as I grew older, I realized that all the worrying doesn’t make sense. “Nowadays, I just try to spend my days fruitfully. That is why I hate traffic. Sayang ang oras.”

SECRETS TO SUCCESS AND LONGEVITY

Rey and his wife-business manager, Ditas.

“Being kind to everyone. Even the humblest waiters or crew, I made friends with them. I relate to them. This may not be the best formula to getting “up there,” but this is the surest way to “stay up there.” “Know your craft. If you are into songwriting, turn your ‘idols’ into your mentors. Learn from them.” Truly a hitmaker! At ang kanyang sagot sa tanong na “What does it take to be a hitmaker?” “Lucky, that is how I feel.” Hurado ng TNT, successful shows, teleserye and movie songs, hinahangaan. “Staying alive. Surviving this long in showbiz. I congratulate myself everyday for that.”

MEMORIES WITH HIS FELLOW MUSIC ICON

Dahil bahagi ng kanyang career ang isang Rico J., his unforgettable moment on stage was with him. Rey looks back. “Being on stage with Rico Puno a couple of days before he died. “All year long, we did shows abroad and he was sickly and he was taken on a wheel chair and was breathing through an oxygen tank behind the curtains. “We worried for him too much. It was that bad. “The last time I performed with him, he was ‘glowing’ and was in good mood. I was really shocked to find out that he died a couple of days later.” But life goes on.

GRATEFUL

“To all my fans. And if possible, they can all sing with me on stage. Kantahan kami. “Because of them, I’m still around. I wrote my songs for them. I stayed as long as I could here in showbiz for them. For them to realize that they were right all along when they supported me. It is my way of thanking them. For I know, they are the real reason why I am a lucky guy.” H CELEBRITY RADAR | DEC 2018 - JAN 2019 | 63

No jowa, NO PROBLEM

Spread good cheer during the holidays sa mga nangangailangan nito. Christmas spirit for the win!

A

So if you attend alone, as in without a jowa, partner o significant other, lahat ng kamag-anak mo tatanungin ka kung bakit wala ka pang jowa.

2. Nakamamatay talaga ang inggit. Lahat kasi ng kaibigan

ko ay may jowa kaya lagi akong out of place kapag kumakain kami after we do our holiday shopping.

a. Deserve mo ‘yan this Christmas.

c. After mo lumamon, SHOT NA! Uminom ka nang bonggang-bongga. With or without friends, siguradong iinit ang Kapaskuhan mo sa alak, brandy, gin, rhum, shoktong, whiskey o wine na tinotoma mo.

d. Pumarty ka nang pumarty! Kahit na hindi ka invited, pumunta ka to spread the holiday cheer! Haha!

e. At ang panghuli, go on a trip. Mapa-abroad o dito lang sa Pilipi-

nas, try going somewhere for a change of scenery. H

ABOUT LAILA CHIKADORA Laila Chikadora has been in the radio industry since 2001. Her story is an example of “nangarap, umasa, nasaktan, hindi sumuko, naging DJ!” Her voice was first heard as one of Triggerman’s Posse in the 90’s via Campus Radio 97.1 LSFM and then at the start of the new millennium as King DJ Logan’s Spookologist, Bridget. After several auditions, and a lot of “we’ll call you” and one hurtful “you are not (enter radio station dial) quality,” she finally made it as 90.7 Love Radio’s Lala Banderas. Pioneering the “babaeng bakla” peg on radio, she paved the way for her other female contemporaries, Nicole Hyala and DJ Cha-Cha. Because of her wit and contagious laughter, Laila won as Best Variety Show Host in the 14th KBP Golden Dove Awards for ‘Pinoy Hits For Life!’ aired via WRR 101.9 For Life! That award opened doors for Laila to host the late game show, ‘Games Uplate Live!’ on ABS-CBN. After a few radio station transfers and several name changes, Laila Chikadora - Pangilinan is still spreading the good vibes and laughing her lungs out Monday to Fridays, 5am to 7am via ‘Morning Calls’ and ‘Orly and Laila All Ready’ aired at Radyo5 92.3 News FM.

Buhos ng ulan, dating ng sakit

Health

Read about the many diseases the rainy season can bring, at kung paano mo maiiwasan ang mga ito TEXT: MELISSA SINCHONGCO, M.D.

A

s the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure. May mga uri kasi ng sakit na common during certain times of the year. This month, we’re smack dab in the middle of the rainy season. So ano nga ba ang mga common diseases sa panahong ito, and paano ba natin masisigurado na hindi tayo maging vulnerable sa kanila? Read on and find out. Dengue Fever – Dengue is number one on the list. During the rainy season, stagnant water is everywhere, at doon mahilig mangitlog ang mga lamok na sanhi ng dengue. Para makaiwas sa sakit na ito, you need to make sure your home is very clean and free of stagnant water so no mosquitos will be drawn to you and your family. Magsuot din ng light-colored na damit, because mosquitos are said to be attracted to dark colors. In case you are bitten by a mosquito, watch for symptoms such as bleeding from your nose, chills, a fever with a temperature that goes up and down, lethargy, muscle pain, rashes and a sore throat. If you suspect you or a loved one has dengue, see a doctor ASAP. Most hospitals these days have dengue express lanes in their emergency rooms, so you can go there as well. Chikungunya – This disease is also caused by a mosquito bite, so again, please make sure your surroundings are free of stagnant water para iwas chikungunya. The kind of

mosquitos that can spread this disease also lays its eggs in aircooler plants and even dirty utensils, kaya dapat hugasan niyo agad ang pinagkaininan niyo. Right now there is no medicine to treat this disease, nor is there a vaccine to prevent it. The chikungunya virus can be imported to different areas by infected people who travel frequently. When traveling, protect yourself by preventing mosquito bites. Magsuot ka ng mga longsleeved shirts, pants, and stay in places with air-conditioning or whose doors and windows have screens on them to keep mosquitos out. Diarrhoea - Pag nagkaroon ka ng loose bowel movement or LBM, chances are you’ll also get dehydrated. Having LBM or watery stool for three or more days can cause dehydration. Luckily, this disease is easily managed by drinking water or even Gatorade—basically anything that can replace electrolytes. Avoid eating street foods if you can, and wash your hands often, especially before you eat. Viral fever - This is quite common. When

you come down with this, you get a nasty cough, cold and fever that lasts from three to seven days. Every year we encounter this in our clinics, emergency rooms, et cetera— lalo na during the moonsoon season. To prevent this, I highly recommend getting a flu vaccine, which can give your immune system a boost, which in turn will give your immune system the power to fight off viral fever. Leptospirosis – The rainy season often brings with it massive flooding in the metro, which brings traffic and, in some cases, leptospirosis. This is a disease people usually get when they wade into floodwaters with open wounds and the like. Floodwaters are so dirty, to say the least—madalas may halong ihi ng daga ‘yan. This disease may give you a high fever and headache, so before you go wading into floodwaters, check if you have open wounds. Or better yet, ‘wag kang lumusong sa baha. There you have it. Chikungunya, dengue fever, diarrhoea, leptospirosis, typhoid fever at viral fever. Stay safe, healthy and dry, everyone! H

Horoscope

Notes for December

Wondering what the stars have in store for you this month?

Swerte ang mga ipinanganak sa Year of the Dragon ngayong Disyembre.

RAT

Kailangan din nilang mag-ingat when it comes to their health, kasi magiging vulnerable sila sa mga sakit sa mata at lapay.

DOG

Year of the Ox ngayong Nobyembre. Para naman sa mga couples, this month is also a good time for them to get married.

Mabuti ring magpa-check up sila at maaaring may indahing sakit. Nararapat ding iwasan ng mga Tiger ang magpakalulong sa trabaho—they should also make sure they have a life outside the office.

RABBIT

They should avoid arguing with and forcing their opinions on others. Wala itong maidudulot na maganda. Great social skills will come in handy at work. 66 | DEC 2018 - JAN 2019 | CELEBRITY RADAR

SNAKE

No matter what happens, their family and friends will always be there to help them and give them a different perspective on things. It would also be a good idea for them to start a savings account para sa hinaharap.

HORSE

Black is an important color for people born in the Year of the Horse this December. This will be their lucky color.

SHEEP

ROOSTER

Be wary of prospective partners; maging metikoloso at detalyado sa inyong usapan.

PIG

May paghihirap pero malalagpasan mo ito if you can stay positive. Get plenty of rest and take vitamins and supplements to boost your immune system dahil magiging busy ang buwan na ito para sa iyo.

Coco Martin

Scorpios are naturally loyal at passionate.
