D&AD: Collaboration To tackle BBC Online’s D&AD brief collaboratively I worked with Eve Warren, particularly because I felt our strengths and weaknesses complement each other and overall this was a productive and efficicent brief and I’m positive that this brief is much stronger than it would be if we did this indiivdually. These boards will show my individual contribution towards the brief instead of the boards which were sent for submission.

Concept & Analysis After discussion me and Eve outlined individual concepts and initial ideas we wanted to look into in regards to implementing. We also both went away individually and analysed the BBC website separately to have separate viewpoints and opinions. Initially I looked at problems of BBC Online and possible solutions to those problems. These sheets were then discussed and finalised in an arranged meeting point. BBC Problems?

BBC Solutions?

Uninvolved Unimportant user profiles Not a very social experience No consistency in layout/design No substantial BBC app No movement Text heavy early impression Gradients and dated aesthetic News doesn’t feel alive and happening Too many click-throughs

Live panel Real-time dynamic news updates Grid & Print like sensibilities Similar to an interactive newspaper Tailored news for you Importance of you as a unique user Users send in photos and be involved Importance to apps Consistent design/layout Purely digital UI Movement/Life in the form of video and gifs

Rough Development With the concepts nailed in our minds we gave ourselves a weekend to again individually design our interpretation of the concepts together. For example a dynamic live feed, grid like aesthetic, movement, consistency etc. We then met up and combined our ideas into one final layout which we felt was the best it could possibly be from us. On this sheet are examples some of the rough sketches I then developed into digital interpretations to present to my partner.

Digital Development After working out how my layout pitch was going to look I was ready to take this into the computer and create a much more feasible presentation. The idea went down really well, but at the same time I really felt aspects of Eve’s design was strong, in the end the core of the final design was my interpretation but important aspects such as the navigation and tabs were from Eve’s design.

Design Collaboration On this sheet is the culmination of merging both of our designs to incorporate a final layout including tabs, navigational arrows and more of a hierarchy of type with pt size and weight from Eve’s interpretation with the core layout being my interpretation. We storyboarded the submission and decided we only needed to create BBC Home, Sport, News and Weather. I worked on Home and Sport, while Eve worked on News and Weather.

Impact Board Variations We initially wanted to create a moving image proposal but taking into account we had never used After Effects before and the high standards we wanted to meet - we decided to create images/boards. I’m quite adept at Photoshop so I took on the role of photoshopping and mocking up contextual imagery and paid particular attention to the first board - the impact board. The impact board needs to capture the idea of BBC being alive, with varying levels of interactivity and movement.

The final board we went with (above)

Billboard & Promotion Eve artworked on the rest of the boards while I worked on the impact board and promotional imagery as the impact board took quite a long time. I also helped with and wrote out the copy for the boards and shared layout and visual concepts. we thought it would be more efficient and less confusing to work mainly on one computer while I worked on the impact boards and promotion.
