Context Being passionate about applying graphic design sensibility and intelligence to sport, football is perhaps one of the worst culprits when it comes to coming across as brainless, loud and with little consideration for print – perhaps less so than in the past before the digital age. A huge factor in football, and sports in generals commercial and uninspired aesthetic style is sponsors and advertising constraints taking up ad space and creative liberty. As a graphic design student in a privileged situation of having no ties and third parties to appease, how could you re-imagine a football campaign?
Brief Create and launch an online and print journal catering for a variety of interests, while still being focused towards the arts + culture market. Focusing on bringing spotlight to the talent and eclecticism of Leeds.
Preparation In an increasingly globalised world, we perhaps don’t support our own local environment in terms of lifestyle and product anymore – with websites like Amazon bringing availability to pretty much anything. With the internet, we all have our favourite web pages to catch up on the latest news in a variety of interests we may have – this can be timeconsuming and counterproductive to productivity – what about having all of it in one place? At the same time, magazines aren’t cheap, it’s an expensive hobby but it shouldn’t be costly to read a highlight of a variety of news in a beautifully designed book. Leeds is an exciting city full of developments in music, art, fashion, movies and technology. No one’s bringing spotlight to the flourishing areas of Leeds in a contemporary, intelligent, innovative and beautiful manner with no clutter. Wide range of specialisms such as video features, photography and print open up up potential for many collaborations. Which is exciting creatively.
Evidence Functioning, live and thriving online website sharing news and unique articles. A minimum of one edition of a highly finished magazine edition in print.
--Development and logging on online blogs. Constant feedback, and refinement and further exploration through peer critiques. Consideration of all relevant formats and media. On-going experimentations with stock, layout and web user experience. Market research into target markets, existing products, location and timing of launch. Research into appealing UI design.
