+ THE FOUNDER. Elena Ovaitt Weiss started Ovaitt Health Media in 2013 with a commitment to conveying health issues and improving health through visual design. With formal training and experience in both health and graphic design, Elena has developed distinct problem-solving and communications skills that enable her to translate complex health data and information into visual content that is effective in reaching broad and diverse audiences.

Throughout her career, Elena has worked for both non-governmental organizations and for-profit entities and has collaborated with top academic researchers, graphic designers and journalists. Prior to launching Ovaitt Health Media, Elena worked for Global Health Strategies (GHS), an international consulting firm focused on global health advocacy and communications. While at GHS, Elena primarily worked on communications and design efforts for polio eradication on behalf of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Elena has also worked for the National Academies - Institute of Medicine (IOM) on communications and research projects related to obesity prevention. Most notably, she contributed to the IOM/HBO public health campaign entitled The Weight of the Nation, an Emmy-nominated documentary series designed to raise awareness about the current obesity epidemic.

Elena graduated from Georgetown University with a Bachelors of Science in Foreign Service, where she studied global health and also received a Certificate in International Development. She was awarded honors in her major for her thesis on the availability, accessibility and use of mental health services by Latina immigrants in Washington, DC. Elena is fluent in Spanish and has worked on a number of design and communications projects involving Spanish-speaking populations. She spent two summers working on global health issues in San Lucas TolĂman, Guatemala.

CASE STUDY NO. 1 _ INFOGRAPHICS. OVERVIEW + Working as a subcontractor for Global Health Strategies on a University of Maryland project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Ovaitt Health Media designed an infographic to convey the key findings of the Global Enteric Multicenter Study (GEMS), the largest study ever conducted on diarrheal diseases in developing countries. The Lancet published the findings of the study in May 2013, creating a time-sensitive opportunity to increase awareness of the study’s findings.

APPROACH + The infographic (see next two pages) made the key findings of the study accessible to advocates and program leaders who drive implementation of critical interventions highlighted by the GEMS study. Ovaitt Health Media used very simple graphics and easy-to-read typefaces that would resonate with the target audience.

The infographic received significant coverage on both traditional and social media. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation published the infographic on their blog. UNICEF USA tweeted the infographic to its 139,200 followers, and The Lancet also tweeted the infographic to its 70,500 followers.

CASE STUDY NO. 2 _ SOCIAL MEDIA. OVERVIEW + Working as a subcontractor for Global Health Strategies, Ovaitt Health Media developed a social media strategy to raise awareness about the Scientific Declaration on Polio Eradication.
APPROACH + To drive traffic to the declaration’s homepage, Ovaitt Health Media designed a bold image to be pushed out on social media. The image (see next page) was disseminated on Twitter and Facebook along with a key message about the declaration and a link to the declaration webpage.

CASE STUDY NO. 3 _ PRESENTATIONS OVERVIEW + The United States-Israel Binational Science Foundation (BSF) asked Ovaitt Health Media to completely rethink and redesign the presentation that they used to pitch potential new donors. Specifically, BSF asked Ovaitt Health Media to focus on the themes of scientific discovery and diplomacy while building the new presentation. Ovaitt Health Media created story and design concepts, designed all graphics and developed all slide templates for the presentation.
APPROACH + To incorporate themes such as scientific discovery, Ovaitt Health Media utilized science metaphors to explain the role of BSF. In this example (see next page), a catalyst and chain reaction are used to illustrate the theme of scientific discovery. Ovaitt Health Media made the slide deck more appealing to target audiences by reducing text and increasing the use of visuals. For example, the original slide deck only provided a bulleted list of BSF’s grant evaluation criteria. Ovaitt Health Media converted this list into a diagram designed to vaguely resemble a benzene ring (see next page).

The new presentation was given for the first time on Friday, August 9 to a potential donor. According to the client, “the presentation went very well” and the “overall reaction was excellent.” The presentation is undergoing additional revisions and additional results are TBD.

CASE STUDY NO. 4 _ REPORTS OVERVIEW + Working as a subcontractor for Global Health Strategies on a project for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), Ovaitt Health Media helped design a report highlighting GPEI’s successful efforts and media coverage from May 2012 to April 2013. Specifically, Ovaitt Health Media was responsible for designing the report’s cover, layout and design.
APPROACH + To incorporate themes such as scientific discovery, Ovaitt Health Media For the report cover, Ovaitt Health Media used a bold, clean style to signify the tremendous success of the initiative. In the same theme, the table of contents and page dividers used bright colors and easy-to-read typefaces to represent the positive outcome of the effort.
RESULTS + In May, the report was presented to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the largest contributor to polio eradication efforts. The report continues to be used as a tool for encouraging long-term investments in polio eradication.
