Evaluation: Positives and learning curves throughout brief A huge positive of this brief was it was something new; we had never done before so this exploration of new skills and new concepts was exciting. I still love the concept of this brief – it’s a fresh take on typeface creation and is less egotistical, and hobbyist in terms of creating a typeface for no reason. The typeface is instead inspired from an individual’s handwriting, and via graphology analysis - it is ultimately inspired by their personality and subconscious traits. Consequently the research for this brief was very enjoyable, and inspiring. A learning curve throughout this module, was figuring out which elements of handwriting and graphology apply well to typeface and graphic design. Graphology is a huge subject, and required a lot of time to understand it well enough to be able to read handwriting and what certain elements mean. For example, what a positively angled handwriting style that goes upwards means personality wise, and how this can be demonstrated typographically. Difficulties faced throughout the module An obvious difficulty throughout the brief was simply creating a decent typeface, we had never made a typeface before. We didn’t anticipate how long it would take us. The amount of time it took us to create a basic set of letterforms and glyphs, before we even made it into a true font file, gave us newfound respect for professional typographers such as Colophon and Dalton Maag. What I would do differently next time Next time around, I would allow more time for font creation, this is a huge brief, almost two briefs in one with two distinct sides. The typecast branding itself along with graphology research and data collection, the second part is less about the typecast brand and more about taking the data and producing a range of type specs and context material. Next time around I feel we would make a clearer link between the two and have a stronger justification for the finalised spec book, in terms of what we would do with it. How the recipient would receive it, and how we would gain data through other means such as websites etc. Overall this brief was hugely enjoyable, and something we plan on carrying out as a fun self-initiated project where we take someone’s handwriting, and produce a fully-fledged type spec book, maybe at a cost, or for fun. We plan on taking this brief and applying it to the end of year show in an engaging and interactive manner.
