Case study Planters Garden Centre Planters Garden Centre asked Abbey to create three distinct styles within their new 300 cover restaurant development. The first area was designed to create a separate welcoming environment for dogs and their owners. The second area was developed as a warm and cosy informal cafĂŠ area to maximise morning and afternoon trade. The third, final and largest area was dedicated to the main restaurant, designed to cope with the very high volume of lunches and meals provided throughout the day. The dog owners area was generally themed around a farmhouse kitchen to make the environment comfortable, informal and welcoming. Abbey built a genuine farmhouse style kitchen fitted with an AGA which not only complimented the theme but had the additional practical use of a bowl storage and water dispense point for our four legged friends. Old style settles were used together with a large central solid Oak farmhouse table complete with carabiner clips as a holding device for dogs. The main restaurant was furnished in two styles. Wicker style chairs and white marble tables are located toward the patio area to provide an Edwardian conservatory feel and solid wood chairs and circular bench seating booths were used throughout the rest of the restaurant for comfortable feature seating. The area was very large and needed division between the restaurant and service area so Abbey designed some natural willow movable screens as a practical solution.

Informal comfortable furniture was used in the cafĂŠ area such as wing sided lounge chair and tub chairs combined with drum stools and two seat sofas to create small seating groups, particularly around the log burner. A long section of bench seating was also added to provide a visual break between the service counter and to bolster up the cover capacity at lunchtime with this integral soft look. Abbey also provided the painted cladding to the front service counter and cutlery pick up points. The overall effect has been very successful and the positive effect has exceeded expectations in all respects.

Case study Cardigan Castle The restoration of Cardigan Castle is the culmination of many years of hard work and fundraising undertaken by the Cadwgan Buildings Preservation Trust. In late 2013, Abbey were invited to tender for the supply of furniture in the soon to be constructed restaurant and bar. The space was designed to take advantage of the fantastic commanding views of the River Teifi and the Castle Gardens by constructing a modern extension with high ceilings and long window walls. Abbey suggested fresh colours that would take advantage of the abundance of light together with natural materials such as slate, oak and zinc. After the success of the design for the restaurant, Abbey were asked to design and build the bar. In contrast to the main restaurant, the lounge bar was positioned in an old Georgian house with low ceilings and a single window. We suggested warm colours and a compact space saving design for the room and bar to better suit the environment and create a cosy yet spacious interior.

From our work in the restaurant and bar, the Trust asked us to provide design and furnishings for further areas in the complex including the seminar, events/wedding venues, gallery spaces and the Castle gift shop. The gift shop represented a fantastic opportunity for us to develop some unique furniture pieces to house the many local crafts and souvenirs available in the shop. We developed two distinct styles to reflect the long history of the castle - the medieval style shelving units, low display cabinets and rustic timber cladding were designed to be reminiscent of the castle’s original incarnation as a defensive castle. The classic panelled retail cabinets echoed the style of the grand Georgian House built on the Castle grounds in the 18th century. The newly re-opened Cardigan Castle is proving a great success offering a fantastic heritage attraction, restaurant, accommodation and events venue.

Case study Blunsdon House Hotel, Swindon Abbey were asked by Blunsdon House Hotel to create an exciting and sophisticated design for the refurbishment of their new Flame restaurant. We created a luxurious atmosphere using modern furniture and vibrant colours. Our wave shaped bench seating flows around the curve of the round Oast house creating individual areas. The large central dining table symmetrically fills the dining space for larger parties. Abbey supplied all the furniture, flooring, curtains and blinds for the entire fabric
