Case Study

Zaap, Nottingham

Following the successful opening of the first Zaap restaurant in Leeds, the owners tasked us with replicating the Thai street food concept into their newest restaurant in Nottingham. We worked on the original concept of an authentic Thai street by creating a number of settings including a Thai railway including part of a train built by a stage designer. There were a number of key pieces of furniture supplied by Abbey including the sapele constructed replica railway style bench and vintage travel trunks turned into benches. Abbey created a unique cladded section of bench seating with a fluted black faux leather seat inspired by vintage motorcycles with contrasting back pads in a hemp feeling fabric suspended from a galvanised steel pole surrounded by authentic Thai memorabilia. Zaap wanted to create a separate raised garden area to create separation form the rest of the restaurant, we supplied authentic singer style sewing machine bases with scaffold board tops to match the slatted dining chairs and stools made from drum stools. The remainder of the restaurant is filled in lots of vibrant and exciting Thai memorabilia that really helps to recreate a Thai street theme filled with atmosphere, including the fantastic ideas of the Tuk Tuk booths as used in the Leeds site. The first few weeks of trading has proven the popularity of the street food concept with the mix of industrial and urban chic. We look forward to working with the owners of Zaap for their next sites.

Case study Garsons Garden Centre, Esher

Abbey are very proud to have supplied nearly the entire furnishing project at Garson Garden Centre. The furniture was selected party for its rustic shabby chic look with modern practicality and durability firmly in mind. An eclectic mix of chairs were selected to zone different areas to create a full and colourful look and combined with bench seating to visually soften and fill the larger open spaces. The restaurant was a very large open space which was flooded with hard light. Abbey designed and made a series of bespoke fixed barriers to practically divide the servery with the seating area to control customer flow. The fixed walls were decorated with rustic style cladding, stencilled with the Garson logo and embellished with historic pictures of the garden centre. Abbey also designed and made the unique counter cladding with a mixture of rustic panels and smart painted Georgian style panelling to tie in with the general overal design. To further divided the space on a flexible basis we designed movable division screens which made best use of the space by providing additional privacy and maximised the cover capacity and coupled with the bespoke bench seat the area was divided both attractively and efficiently.

Case study Planters Garden Centre Tamworth

Planters Garden Centre asked Abbey to create three distinct styles within their new 300 cover restaurant development. The first area was designed to create a separate welcoming environment for dogs and their owners. The second area was developed as a warm and cosy informal cafĂŠ area to maximise morning and afternoon trade. The third, final and largest area was dedicated to the main restaurant, designed to cope with the very high volume of lunches and meals provided throughout the day. The dog owners area was generally themed around a farmhouse kitchen to make the environment comfortable, informal and welcoming. Abbey built a genuine farmhouse style kitchen fitted with an AGA which not only complimented the theme but had the additional practical use of a bowl storage and water dispense point for our four legged friends. Old style settles were used together with a large central solid Oak farmhouse table complete with carabiner clips as a holding device for dogs. The main restaurant was furnished in two styles. Wicker style chairs and white marble tables are located toward the patio area to provide an Edwardian conservatory feel and solid wood chairs and circular bench seating booths were used throughout the rest of the restaurant for comfortable feature seating. The area was very large and needed division between the restaurant and service area so Abbey designed some natural willow movable screens as a practical solution.

Informal comfortable furniture was used in the cafĂŠ area such as wing sided lounge chair and tub chairs combined with drum stools and two seat sofas to create small seating groups, particularly around the log burner. A long section of bench seating was also added to provide a visual break between the service counter and to bolster up the cover capacity at lunchtime with this integral soft look. Abbey also provided the painted cladding to the front service counter and cutlery pick up points. The overall effect has been very successful and the positive effect has exceeded expectations in all respects.

Case study Rare Restaurant, Leeds

Rare Restaurant is a unique dining experience in Leeds City Centre offering specialist meats from suppliers with high-welfare produced and rare bred animals, expertly butchered by W H Frost and Sons. RARE, are committed to serving the very best of breed and do not believe in compromising those values. Making a restaurant in Leeds unlike any other! The client required the dining experience to be unique so the furniture had to play its part in the experience by offering a high level of comfort and finish with a very specific style. Using the best quality leathers Abbey upholstered the wide fluted bench seating with an additional head roll in natural organic green colours, the restaurant chairs in contrasting mustard and grey fabrics which worked beautifully against the natural brickwork. The client also required the flexibility to be able to lock several tables together to form a decorative oval table for larger groups, so we fixed linking devices to the underside of three of the table and split one of the round tables in two, to be adaptable to lock on either end to form an oval shape – the result was ideal and this is now the most versatile and popular table in the restaurant.

The bench seating was designed to fit along the natural lines of the exposed brickwork rounding off at each end to form private circular booths. Dwarf walls were used to create natural breaks in the straight lines creating additional privacy and structural balance.
