Camp Small Valley Snapshot Camp Small Valley is located in upper Dauphin County, 30 minutes north of Harrisburg. Nestled on 762 acres of land, there is nothing small about Small Valley! This camp offers big adventures such as, horseback riding, rock climbing, hiking, geocaching, and archery. Girls will push themselves to new heights through our high ropes course and discover teamwork at the low ropes course. Campers will also find a Science Center, planetarium and a swimming pool with a bubble beach! There is something for everyone including pottery, sports, dance, theater, orienteering, sling shots and more!

Highlights! You’ll Love Our YURTS! We are excited to premier our brand new YURT Village. The village is made up of four YURTs that each sleep 10 girls and offer a truly unique camp experience! The low ropes course challenges girls through imaginative scenarios where they have to communicate, cooperate and work together as a team to conquer obstacles. Arm-in-arm, hand- in-hand, campers will help each other tightrope walk, climb walls, and guide each other through “spider webs” until they ALL reach the end. (Low ropes course is also available at Camp Archbald.)

Harnessing in On the Fun! The High Ropes Course, Climbing Wall, Giant Swing, and Leap of Faith will boost our campers’ confidence and courage as they confront challenges and achieve the unimaginable. Safety comes first, as our trained facilitators make sure all participants are strapped, locked and secured before they tackle their next adventure. High Ropes: Girls will bravely trek through that high ropes course that runs app. 50 feet off the ground. Campers will go through seven elements and celebrate the completion of the course as they cruise down a 475 foot zip line! Climbing Wall: Camp Small Valley’s 3-sided climbing wall will dare girls to take something that looks impossible and tackle it head on! This climbing wall allows multiple climbers at one time and a vertical play pen. Giant Swing and the Leap of Faith: The Giant Swing and the Leap of Faith requires that girls work together as a team! In the Giant Swing, girls will pull a tow line to hoist a girl to go swinging (safely!) through the air. The Leap of Faith will challenge our campers to do the unthinkable and leap from a 50 foot platform.

Camp Archbald Snapshot » Camp Archbald is located in Susquehanna County in the woods of the Endless Mountains in northeastern Pennsylvania. Just like the mountains, the possibilities are endless! It is the second oldest Girl Scout camp in the nation and is rich with almost 100 years of Girl Scout tradition. At Archbald, girls can fully enjoy nature when they are surrounded by the beautiful forests and a spring-fed glacial lake. Adventure awaits with boating, canoeing, swimming, archery, hiking, horseback riding, rock climbing, ziplines, low ropes course and so much more.

Highlights! A Whole New Dining Experience! We are happy to introduce our new Dining Hall! This new facility is more than just a place for the campers to grab some grub! Girls will meet new friends, exchange stories, and share lifelong memories with their fellow campers. The scenic Lake Ely provides 34 acres of fun for girls who are interested in swimming, kayaking, canoeing and row boating. Nook Tower offers four walls of challenges, which includes climbing, rappelling and a vertical play pen.

Girls will push themselves up to the top of the tower just so they can enjoy the ride down from our zip line. Our horse barn provides campers with hands on experiences that will teach girls the full responsibility of taking care of horses from feeding, grooming, and prepping. (Barns and horseback riding is also available at Camp Small Valley.)

My child has special needs, how will she be accommodated? Our inclusive environment helps girls of all abilities to live, play and learn in a noncompetitive environment. If your child requires a special diet, special health care or has a mental or emotional disability or any other condition, you should contact the Camp Director prior to registering your camper. When discussing your daughter’s specific needs and our camp’s ability to accommodate them, you’ll be better able to determine if our camp can provide the support, supervision and necessary accommodations for your camper to have a safe and fulfilling camping experience. Upon arrival, you can further address any issues to our full-time RN. Handicapped accessible living areas are available.

My child is a picky eater, will peanut butter and jelly be available? We no longer serve any tree nut or peanut products at camp. We will offer bread, jellies and butter as a supplement to the hot buffet, fruit and salad bars.

ÂŤ Life at Camp Sleeping Units Living arrangements are grouped by ages and assigned approximately one week before campers arrive for their upcoming session. Girls may stay in tents, cabins or lodges. All of our tent units and cabins have cots with mattresses. Girls may only request one buddy. In return, the buddy must also request her as her unit mate or the request will not be honored. Buddies must be in the same grade level and both must be in the same program, - i.e. Traditional or Ranch Camp.

Eligibility Whether a girl has been a Girl Scout in the past or not, she is always welcome at Girl Scout camp! The process is very simple. If she would like to come to camp, and she is not already a registered member of Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania, she will need to include an additional $15 non-refundable Girl Scout membership fee. This additional fee must be included with the deposit and makes her eligible to participate in any Girl Scout activities through September 30, 2014.

All of units are organized into villages. Each of our villages house a group of girls along with their very own dedicated camp staff.

Camp Community When a Girl Scout leaves camp, she will leave with a lifetime of memories and a special bond with her camp family! Our staff strives for excellence to ensure that our campers have a positive experience that is life changing! We offer fun and exciting programs in a safe environment that encourages our campers to challenge themselves to go outside their comfort zones.

Restroom and Shower Facilities Small Valleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s restroom facilities are comprised mostly of flushing toilets with latrines at a few of the units. Girls will have the opportunity to shower during scheduled unit times at the pool house. Archbald offers latrines and shared shower facilities between the units. Most units offer hand washing stations nearby and others provide hand sanitizer. Each unit schedules daily shower times for the girls. Meals Our meals are prepared by our professional food service and served in our dining hall. All meals provide a variety of food that is both healthy and kid friendly. A fresh salad and fruit bar are always offered during lunch and dinner. Campers have a unit breakfast, dinner and a unit pack out lunch at least once during the week. Vegetarian and kosher diets can be accommodated. Other dietary restrictions may also be accommodated; however parents may need to supplement acceptable foods for our staff to prepare. Please make sure to include dietary restrictions when you register your camper.

Our girls will gain independence, decision-making skills and life-long friendships. Campers will have the opportunity to meet other girls (campers and camp staff) from our area, from throughout the United States and even around the world. By offering this culturally rich experience along with the week-long activities and daily electives, your camper is sure to have an unforgettable and well-rounded camp experience. Staffing All camp staff participate in a rigorous interview process including thorough background screenings and in-person interviews to ensure they are a perfect fit for our camp. Upon arrival, they begin a two-week staff training process. Each member of our team is certified in first aid, CPR, AED as well as epi-pen. Both returning and new staff members share our campersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; enthusiasm which gives our campers a fun experience that is based on the Girl Scout philosophy, mission, Promise and Law.

What are some examples of Electives?

Traditional Camp » General Information Traditional Camp lets every camper choose her own itinerary for the week. She will be able to pick from a variety of programs with other girls her same age. We offer two types of opportunities, core activities and daily electives. The core activities are typical programs for which she will earn a Girl Scout badge. Core activities can also be a great way for her to try something new and expand her knowledge in a particular area that isn’t necessarily badge driven. Daily electives occur twice a day, once before lunch and dinner. They will choose two electives the night before for the following day.

Badges and Patches Our campers will be able to show off their summer camp accomplishments by earning various badges and patches. At the end of the week, campers will have earned a minimum of 1 Girl Scout badge and 1 fun patch that they can take home.

Traditional Camp continuedâ&#x20AC;Ś Trail Rides For an additional $30 fee, a camper can sign up to participate in one horseback riding lesson per week of camp. We will fit her with a horse that is suited to her level of riding experience. She will ride in our riding ring to get comfortable in the saddle and learn about equine safety and riding techniques. Thereafter, she will head out onto trail riding. Note: Trail riding is weather dependent, if it is raining we try to reschedule the ride; however, if we are unable to ride, girls will still get an opportunity to a real horse experience. No refunds. Trips (Juniors and up) In addition to choosing their own activities, campers have the option to go on a half or full day out-of-camp trip for FREE! Trips vary by age, space and interest. If there is not enough interest or there is inclement weather, trips may be cancelled and girls will continue to follow their original schedule. Trips may include canoeing, hiking or geocaching at a nearby state park.

Traditional Camp FAQs Q: How do I know what activities my camper will participate in?

Q: A:

You can discuss what activities she would like to do when she gets to camp. You will receive a blue form with your confirmation packet that has a question regarding what activities she would like to do. Talk to your daughter about her options before she arrives at camp. Use the pink form that you will receive in the mail to notify us of the badges and patches she has already earned so they are not duplicated. My camper would like to participate in horseback riding, is there anything specific she needs to know? Any camper who participates in a horseback riding activity will be required to wear long pants with smooth soled boots or shoes that have a heel. Riding helmets are required and are supplied by GSHPA. If your camper owns a riding helmet, it must be ASTM (American Society of Testing and Materials) and SEI (Safety Equipment Institute) certified. ÂŤ Ranch Camp At Ranch Camp, girls entering 6th through 10th grade will spend the week developing a relationship with a horse that is assigned specifically to her. Ranch campers will learn different styles of western horsemanship. This progressive program offers girls an opportunity to excel from a beginners level to the advanced. We offer four different levels: white, yellow, blue and red. Once a camper passes the red level, she will have the opportunity to become a Wrangler-in-Training (WIT). In order to progress through the levels, the camper must pass a riding and written test to advance to the next level. Our badge and bandana program is a way to receive recognition. Each girl attending Ranch Camp will earn a horse patch at the end of her first week as well as a colored bandana that shows off her riding level. In addition, the camper will earn a rocker for each level she passes. Throughout the week, girls will still have the opportunity to participate in traditional camp activities. Ranch Campers will have the chance to pick an elective and swim each day. At the end of the week, girls can showcase their hardwork and abilities at the horse show, where parents/ guardians are invited to watch their campers demontrate their newly formed skills. The show will begin around 3:30 p.m. on Friday.

Q: A:

What if my camper has been riding and doesn’t want to start at the white level? If your camper is completely confident in her riding skills and horsemanship knowledge, she may take the white level written test on Sunday. If she successfully passes the test, she can take the white level riding test on Monday morning. If she receives a passing grade, she can advance to the yellow level immediately. I heard that the blue level requires mulitple weeks of participation, is that true? Each level requires a different amount of time devoted to progress. The further along a ranch camper achieves the more time is required to work on riding styles. For example: a white level rider needs to have 1 successful week to move to the yellow level which also is a week long. The blue and red levels require 2 weeks in the same summer, but not necessarily consecutively. Ranch camp fills up quickly and if a camper is on the blue or red levels, it is strongly suggested to register for both at the same time. My camper doesn’t have boots, will this be a problem? Every ranch camper should have a proper pair of boots with a heel. Rain boots will suffice for the white level, moving forward a proper boot will need to be acquired. Financial Assistance Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania offers Financial Assistance (also known as summer camperships) for qualified girls who demonstrate a need for it. Donations from individuals, corporations, foundations and United Ways help support the campership fund. The campership application can be found on page 31-32 of this guide. The application must be submitted with your camper's registration and $50 non-refundable deposit. Applicants will be notified as to whether or not they qualify for financial assistance within a month after registrating and will be expected to pay any remaining balance by June 7, 2014.

Confirmations After submitting your camper’s registration paperwork and non-refundable $50 deposit, you can expect to receive a confirmation packet approximately 3 – 4 weeks later. The confirmation packet includes several different documents that must be completed prior to your campers arrival. Please bring the completed forms with you to camp and make sure they are filled out in its entirety. To ensure the welfare of your child, she will be required to get a physical within 12 months of her intended camp stay. You will find this form within your confirmation packet.

If I am signing my camper up for multiple weeks, can she stay over the weekend? Unfortunately, she cannot. We have different programs and trainings that overlap the weekends.

Deposits may be transferred to a different week for the same girl. Deposits are not transferrable between girls.

Can my child still go to camp even though she is not a registered Girl Scout?

Yes! Girl Scout camp is for all girls entering 2nd through 10th grade. For non-Girl Scouts there is an additional $15 non-refundable fee, which must be included with the deposit. What will the confirmation packet contain? The confirmation packet will contain information regarding packing lists, drop off and pick up times, wildlife, check- in and check-out procedures, food, lodging, home sickness, behaviors and expectations, general questions, directions to camp and more! You will also receive forms that must be filled out and brought with you to camp. Please do not mail any forms in the confirmation packet to the office. Are deposits transferrable?

Our Adventure Bound programs will give campers new found confidence and strength as they conquer the challenges that nature has to offer. Adventure Bound campers will learn how to trust themselves, and each other, as they work together to explore, problem-solve, and achieve common goals. This is an empowering experience for all! Adventure Bound incorporates traditional camping with the rugged outdoors. Girls will have an experience of a lifetime and walk away with friendships that will last forever.

Boats and Boots Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s back by popular demand! This is a great adventure for girls to try! Girls will come to camp on Sunday and depart on Monday for a two day trip down the Juniata River. They will then return to camp and brave our Giant Swing or take a Leap of Faith on our Adventure Course. Girls will then to head out on a hiking trip to discover the world famous Appalachian Trail that extends from Maine to Georgia. Girls will finish their week on our high ropes challenge course and zip line.

Backpacks, Boats and Biners This action packed trip starts with a multiovernight canoe trip down the scenic Delaware River. Campers will be able to escape the everyday as they canoe through the beautiful riverscape and towering cliffs where wildlife flourishes. After 3 days on the river, girls will rock climb in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area before completing this sojourn with an overnight backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail.

Camp Archbald River Rats Join us for a 4 day canoe camping trip down the Susquehanna. Before venturing out onto the river, girls will learn the basic canoe strokes needed to enjoy this voyage. Beautiful mountain landscapes and bald eagles will be just a few of the sightseeing highlights. When the girls return to camp, they can finish off the week enjoying a ride down our zipline!

General Information Your Girl Scout doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to be the only one having all the fun! We listened to your feedback and now are offering a longer Family Camp! This ALL-INCLUSIVE opportunity enables families to slow down time, spend quality time together and create a scrapbook worth of memories without having to plan anything. Even the meals are prepared for you! This means no last minute grocery run or whipping up dinner. The only thing you have to worry about is what will be your first family adventure! Your family can choose from a variety of activities that are available all weekend long or you can just spend the time relaxing together. Lodging We offer tents and cabins for your family to stay in. Most of our facilities do not have running water or bathrooms attached to the unit. Available throughout camp are toilets, wash stations and showers. Lodging will be assigned appropriately to the size of your family.

Meals Meals are prepared by our professional food service staff and served buffet style. During your stay, hot meals will be provided. A breakfast bar is available in the mornings and a fresh salad bar is available at lunch and dinner. Activities We offer plenty of family-friendly activities all day. Some activities such as horseback riding require sign-ups upon arrival. Some age restrictions do apply. In inclement weather and extreme heat, horseback riding will not be offered. However, an opportunity to learn and get up close to the horses will still be available. Children younger than 9 years old, will be led on a horse in the riding ring. Certain elements of the High Ropes Course (Small Valley) and Zipline (Small Valley and Archbald) are available for those who are Juniors or 10 years old and older. The climbing tower (Small Valley and Archbald) will be available to anyone 5 years old or older. All activities still follow GSUSA guidelines for participation.

Counselor-in-Training Programs General Information Our camp counselors are the leaders that guide our girls through camp and have a huge impact on their experience and often their lives! It’s not a surprise to us that our older campers often dream of becoming a camp counselor one day. Our CIT I and CIT II program is a great way to begin that process. The Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program is for girls entering grades 10-12. The program helps transition campers into future counselors. CITs will have the opportunity to hone in on their skills by challenging them with new responsibilities and a time for growth. Pre-camp is required for all CITs and they should plan to attend training from June 8th12th. Both the CIT I and II programs, require that participating CITs you arrive at camp on Sunday and depart on Friday. For consideration into the CIT I or II program, interested 10th – 12th graders must submit their application forms by April 15th. All applicants will receive notification 3 weeks after we receive their applications.

CIT I Information The CIT program offers high school girls an opportunity to learn leadership and outdoor skills needed to work with girls in the outdoors. During the CIT program, CITs will explore the areas of camp craft skills, group dynamics, child development, program planning skills, camp operations and the role of a camp counselor. The training program includes regular hours devoted to classes, plus actual experience working with children under the supervision of camp staff. This apprentice program is open on a selective basis to those who have passed the initial requirements and have received positive recommendations. CITs will actively take part in a camp apprenticeship. Girls will be required to attend pre-camp training June 8th- 12th at Small Valley. CIT’s may also choose to do either the 3 week or 6 week resident camp program, in addition to the pre-camp session. CIT’s will be expected to complete an evaluation and develop a program they would like to see offered at camp. In addition to program development, CIT’s will shadow and

support various camp staff, when needed, to fully understand the roles everyone takes on at camp. For example, a CIT may find herself at the waterfront one day and the next day at the ranch. CITâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s will also spend time observing camp staff to gain understanding of the Girl Scout organization, management and structure of the camp operation. To be eligible to apply to the program, a CIT applicant must be a second year Girl Scout Senior or be in the 10th grade. Interested girls must fill out the registration and ap-

plication forms. All applications must be post-marked by April 15th to be considered. CIT II Information In order to apply for a CIT II, interested girls must have successfully completed the CIT I program in 2011, 2012 or 2013 and have received a letter of recommendation from the camp director to advance to this program. The CIT II program is 10 weeks including pre-camp. This opportunity will allow girls to bridge easily into

the camp counselor position for the following year. *CIT IIâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s do not need to fill out the CIT application, ONLY the registration form.
