CAMP LIFE Eligibility

Living arrangements are grouped by ages and assigned approximately one week before campers arrive for their upcoming session. Girls may stay in tents, cabins or lodges. All of our tent units and cabins have cots with mattresses. Girls may only request one buddy. In return, the buddy must also request her as her unit mate or the request will not be honored. Buddies must be in the same grade level and both must be in the same program, - i.e. Traditional or Ranch Camp.

All girls are welcome at Girl Scout Camp! If your girl is not currently a member of Girl Scouts, she can still have the summer of her lifetime! The process is very simple. If she would like to come to camp, and she is not already a registered member of Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania, she will need to include an additional $15 nonrefundable Girl Scout membership fee. This additional fee must be included with the deposit.

All of the units are organized into villages. Each of our villages houses a group of girls along with their very own dedicated camp staff. Our staff are assigned to one central unit in the village and the girls will be assigned to their own units.

Restroom & Shower Facilities Small Valley’s restroom facilities are comprised mostly of flushing toilets with latrines at a few of the units. Girls will have the opportunity to shower during scheduled unit times. Archbald offers latrines and shared showering facilities between the units. Most units offer hand washing stations nearby and others provide hand sanitizer. Each village schedules daily shower times for every girl.

Meals Our meals are prepared by our professional food service and served in our dining hall. All meals provide a variety of food that is both healthy and kid-friendly. Various cereals, assorted jellies and toast are always available in addition to the hot breakfast option. A fresh salad and fruit bar are always offered during lunch and dinner. Campers have a unit breakfast, dinner and a unit pack out lunch at least once during the week. Vegetarian and kosher diets can be accommodated. Other dietary restrictions may also be accommodated; however parents may need to supplement acceptable foods for our staff to prepare. Please make sure to include dietary restrictions when you register your camper. We are a nut-free facility. 10

Sleeping Units

The fun doesn’t have to stop at camp either! She will be eligible to participate in any Girl Scout activities and events through September 30, 2015.

Camp Community At Girl Scout Camp, bunk mates become friends and friends become family! Our staff strives for excellence to ensure that our campers have a positive, life-changing experience. We offer fun and exciting programs in a safe environment that encourages our campers to challenge themselves to go outside their comfort zones. Our girls will gain independence, decision-making skills and life-long friendships. Campers will have the opportunity to meet other girls (campers and camp staff) from our area, from throughout the United States and even around the world. By offering this culturally rich experience along with an action packed week your camper is sure to have an unforgettable and well-rounded camp experience.

Staffing All camp staff participate in a rigorous interview process including thorough background screenings and in-person interviews to ensure they are a perfect fit for our camp. Upon arrival, they begin a two-week staff training process. Each member of our team is certified in first aid, CPR, AED as well as epi-pen. Returning staff share our campers’ excitement and can’t wait to come back each year. Our newest staff members are ready to give every one of our campers a fun camp experience that is based on the Girl Scout philosophy, Mission, Promise and Law.

Our Philosophy & Style of Riding Our philosophy with this progressive program is to ensure every girl receives the same level of quality and care that she deserves. Throughout Ranch Camp girls will saddle up their own horse for mounted lessons and theory or un-mounted lessons. The theory lessons will provide girls with the solid foundation to become well rounded in western horsemanship. Our Ranch Camp is designed to provide a traditional camp feel with an equestrian focus. On Sunday, each camper’s skill is tested and each girl will be assigned her very own horse for the week. She will care for the horse and ride daily.

Stepping Stones of Ranch Camp There are four levels in our ranch program, white (beginner), yellow (novice), blue (intermediate) and red (advanced). Every camper has the opportunity to test out of the white level (beginner level). A riding and written test will help to determine their level of horsemanship. If a rider passes, they will automatically go into the yellow level of riding. The yellow level requires one week of participation. To graduate to the blue level, she must take a written and riding test. This is also the same format for the red level. Both the blue and red levels require two weeks of ranch camp in the same summer camping season.

19

RANCH CAMP continued

RANCH CAMP Daily Schedule Schedule at a Glance Each girl will be on horseback as much as possible and have the opportunity to ride once if not twice a day. A typical day in the barn is comprised of splitting the girls up into two groups. Our 1:3 staff to camper ratio will enable small lesson groups with personal attention. One group may ride in the morning while the other learns a theory lesson. The groups will swap in the afternoon. Our qualified staff members love to take Ranch Campers on horseback to explore new places and trails.

Ranch Camp Rates $399 + $50 non-refundable deposit Wrangler-In-Training Program Once a ranch camper completes all four levels of riding, she becomes eligible for our Wrangler-In-Training (WIT) program. The WIT program is the stepping stone to becoming a Ranch Hand and then graduating to a Wrangler. WITs will continue with their horsemanship education and support the ranch campers. WITs will learn the processes and fundamentals of program planning, basic equine first aid, barn operations and more. WITs will be able to choose a three week or six week experience. Towards the end of their experience as a WIT, she will lead one interactive equine presentation. With successful completion of this program and a recommendation, a WIT will graduate onto a Ranch Hand. *All four levels of riding must be achieved in order to participate in the WIT program.

(CIT) PROGRAM Counselor in Training (CIT) programw

CIT I & II For girls entering grades 10-12, our Counselor in Training (CIT) program is the perfect path for girls who hope to become counselors one day. Through our two year program, girls will have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills by working with younger girls both in their activities and in the villages during the evenings. While CIT’s will not engage in activities as younger campers do, the girls will still have a swim time each day, and their own quiet time in their village each evening. Pre-camp is required for all CIT’s, and they should plan on attending the training at Camp Small Valley from Sunday, June 7th-Thursday, June 11th. During training, CIT’s can expect workshops on leadership, child development, and outdoor skills. New this summer, all CIT’s will have the opportunity to experience an overnight adventure away from their village. The girls will gather up their overnight supplies and either hike or canoe to a remote spot on camp. Once there, they will pitch their tents and bond while swapping stories under the starlight.

CIT I Program:

CIT II Program:

CIT I’s will gain a deeper understanding into the world of camp operations. Girls will have the opportunity to shadow some administrative staff at camp and support different camp activity areas. Every day is different and provides new opportunities. For example, a CIT may assist with arts and crafts in the morning and the climbing tower in the afternoon. The following day she may be helping in the barn.

CIT II’s will continue their journey by choosing one activity area to focus on. During her time as a CIT I, a girl may have found she is passionate about a particular activity. As a CIT II, she can choose to intern in that area of camp. She will spend a half day supporting that activity, working with the counselor to learn how they plan the activity and beginning to help lead small parts of the activity. This opportunity will allow her use the skills she built as a CIT I.

During their experience, the CIT I’s will have the opportunity to give back to camp through a service project. The girls will work together as a team to develop and implement a project or structure that will benefit the camp in some capacity. To conclude their CIT experience, the girls will each create and present a program they would like to see offered at camp. In addition to the pre-camp training, CIT I’s have the ability to choose either a three week or six week experience. To be eligible for the program, an interested girl must be a second year Senior Girl Scout or in the 10th grade. No prior resident camp experience is necessary. Space is limited.

CIT I FEE:

Camp Small Valley: $300 Camp Archbald: $300 Both Small Valley & Archbald: $550 26

The second half of their day could be spent in a multitude of ways. CIT II’s will shadow the remaining members of the administrative staff to further their knowledge of camp operations. The girls may also have the opportunity to support other activity areas of camp. CIT II’s will be able to challenge themselves by creating programs that girls will participate in. All CIT II’s will work together to plan the final all-camp activity inspired by the theme for that week. This will be a great way for them to pull together everything they have learned during their time as a CIT and create a memorable experience for the campers. Additionally, each CIT II will have the opportunity to develop and lead an elective activity for younger girls. To be eligible for the CIT II program, girls must have successfully completed the CIT I program, and have been recommended into the program by the Camp Director. CIT II requires the girls to attend all six weeks of resident camp in addition to the week of Pre-Camp. To apply for the program, girls need to complete the registration form and have it postmarked by April 15th. CIT II FEE: $600.

SUMMER CAMP GENERAL INFO

CampDoc CampDoc is in its second year as our easy online software for medical forms, badge requests, camper info and much more. Enter all your camper’s important information quickly, safely and easily through CampDoc.com.

HOW IT WORKS!

Once you have registered for summer camp through GSHPA, you will receive notification two ways. First, you should receive a confirmation email from GSHPA- so please make sure to add noreply@uapps.net to your safe sender list. We then forward the roster to CampDoc. It will ask you via email to create an account. If you have attended summer camp previously all of your information will still be saved. If you are new to CampDoc, once you create an ac28 22

count, you will be able to enter all of the information required for camp. You can use your computer, tablet, smartphone or any device that can access the internet. No internet at all? No problem! We will mail you hard copies of the confirmation packet containing all of the necessary forms required. You can either mail the paperwork in ahead of time or bring it with you to camp. We will enter the information upon your arrival and return your camper’s medical form to you for future use. All the information gathered is for the safety of your camper. You will continue to receive emails weekly until all of the information is completed.

Important Forms MEDICAL FORMS

First and foremost, your medical form and physical are
