For over 100 years, Girl Scouts across the nation have achieved the Girl Scouts’ highest award, currently known as the Gold Award. Records dating back to 1933 show that over 1,000 Girl Scouts from our region earned the highest award and they are celebrated on the covers of this program. While the award itself has transformed over the years, the leadership, passion and dedication of its recipients remains the same.

Congratulations to all of our recipients over the decades! *We apologize for any accidental oversights, misspellings and/or misstatements.

Dear Friends, Every day we see, hear, and encounter problems facing our communities from economic disparities to health and environmental issues. Luckily, we have an elite group of young women who are dedicated to fixing the problems. These girls are our Girl Scout Gold Award earners. For the last 100 years Gold Award recipients have devoted their time, talents and determination to make our world a better place through their exceptional leadership skills. This year we are celebrating the Gold Award’s centennial by honoring 51 Gold Award recipients across central and northeastern Pennsylvania. You will hear their stories, see their hard work, and most importantly you will feel inspired by these young leaders. The girls here today are not your average girl. Just like Girl Scout founder, Juliette Gordon Low, these Girl Scouts are visionary change makers. When they see a problem, they don’t just ask for a solution—they become the solution! Even 100 years ago, Juliette knew that girls were the key to a successful future. She boldly said, ‘The work of today is the history of tomorrow and we are its makers.’ Today, our Gold Award recipients are making history; however, we aren’t just honoring their past work. We celebrate our future and thanks to them, it is a bright one. Congratulations to all of our Gold Award recipients! Yours in Girl Scouting,

ABOUT>>

Girl Scout Gold Award

The Girl Scout Gold Award represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouting; it recognizes girls 14-17 years old who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through sustainable and measureable Take Action projects. Since 1916, girls have answered the call to go Gold, embodying accomplishments and responsibility as a member of their community and the world.

730 DAYS

+ 1,000,000

Since 1916, over one million girls have earned the Gold Award.

one

A Girl Scout who has earned her Gold Award immediately rises one rank in any branch of the United States Armed Forces.

Girls spend on average one to two years on their projects.

1 7

The average age of the recipient is 17 years old.

Timeline 1916-1918/1919: The Golden Eagle of Merit, the highest award in Girl Scouting, marked the beginning of a long tradition of using prestigious awards to recognize girls who make a difference in their communities.

1938-1940: First Class was the highest award in Girl Scouting.

1918/1919-1938: The Golden Eaglet was the highest award in Girl Scouting.

STEPS to Gold The Gold Award project is the culmination of all the work a girl puts into “going gold.” Our Gold Award earners have identified a problem in their community (local or global) that they are passionate about and driven to create change. The project is more than a good service opportunity-it encourages girls to go deeper into problems and places where help is needed, with the strength to spark and inspire worldwide change. 1. Choose an issue 2. Investigate 3. Get help 4. Create a plan 5. Present your plan and get feedback 6. Take action 7. Educate and inspire

1940-1963: The Curved Bar Award was the highest honor in Girl Scouting.

1980-Present: The Girl Scout Gold Award became the highest award a Girl Scout could earn and often described as “What you really want to be remembered for” in Girl Scouting.

1963-1980: First Class was again designated the highest award. To achieve First Class meant a girl was an “all-around” person with skills in many fields and had a proficiency in one.

Who We Are We’re 27,302 strong—17,472 girls and 9,830 adult members who believe girls can change the world. It began over 100 years ago with one woman, Girl Scouts’ founder Juliette Gordon “Daisy” Low, who believed in the power of every girl. She organized the first Girl Scout troop on March 12, 1912, in Savannah, Georgia, and every year since, we’ve made her vision a reality, helping girls discover their strengths, passions, and talents. Today, as yesterday, we continue the Girl Scout mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. We’re the preeminent leadership development organization for girls. And with programs for girls from coast to coast and across the globe, Girl Scouts offers every girl a chance to do something amazing.

Committed to helping today’s girls become tomorrow’s leaders in the following counties: Adams, Carbon, Centre, Clinton, Columbia, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Fulton, Huntingdon, Juniata, Lackawanna, Lancaster, Lebanon, Luzerne, Lycoming, Mifflin, Monroe, Montour, Northumberland, Perry, Pike, Schuylkill, Snyder, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Union, Wayne, Wyoming, York

Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

“Since a very young age, I have been fascinated by the human body and its intricate complexity. I find it enthralling how everything in the world exists in an interwoven balance with everything else. I If I can combine my love for biology and my love for helping people, I will be living my dream every day.”

- Shreya Thakur

Keynote Speaker Shreya Thakur Hummelstown, PA Hershey High School Graduate 18 years old — Girl Scout for 10 years 2016 Gold Award Recipient

There were two obstacles in Shreya’s path to earning her Gold Award. One was distance and the other was language. She didn’t let either get in the way of making the world a better place. Read more about her project on page 21.

Girl Scout Gold Award Recipients Tiffany Adams  Elizabethtown, PA — Lancaster County Juliettes Closet Tiffany wanted all girls, no matter their financial situation, to feel beautiful on their prom night by having the perfect dress. To make this happen, she teamed up with The Cave, which is a warehouse that provides formal wear to low income students. Tiffany’s original goal was to collect and donate 50 prom dresses. Through her efforts and promotion, Tiffany exceeded her original goal and provided 130 girls the prom dress of their dreams. Monica Amarante  Danville, PA — Montour County Fitness Cross Country Walking/Running Trail Monica saw that her community needed a safe, accessible and convenient place to work out and combat and prevent obesity. To help her community be in good health, she created a cross country course for people to exercise. She marked the course with clearly defined paths so that community members could comfortably build their endurance and have a healthier lifestyle. She put the course to the test by hosting a 5K for the Danville community. Kaitlyn Andrews  Dillsburg, PA — York County Domestic Violence Awareness Badge Kaitlyn wanted to build awareness about the devastating effects that domestic abuse has on children. She created an educational Domestic Violence Badge that Girl Scouts (K-12) can earn through a series of age appropriate activities. She partnered with a children’s camp for victims of domestic abuse where each child earned a badge that helped them deal with their issues in a safe way. Allison Baker  Lewisberry, PA — York County Birdhouse Construction and Placement Allison saw how urban sprawl and development was negatively effecting the bird population in her community. To stop the decline in the bird population, she educated her community about a particular species the ‘Purple Martin.’ She connected with key agencies in her community like Lower Allen Township officials and the PA Game Commission to help coordinate her project. She then worked with younger Girl Scouts to build bird habitats to attract and protect the Purple Martin. Leland Barclay  Williamsport, PA — Lycoming County Williamsport Community Youth Tennis Tournament Leland saw an opportunity to help two organizations with one project. She wanted to encourage people to exercise more and create awareness about hunger in her community. To do this, she worked with the YMCA, YWCA Wise Options, and American Rescue Workers to organize The Williamsport Community Youth Tennis Tournament and Food Drive. Children had the opportunity to be physically active and attendees could attend by donating canned food.

Kylie Bell  Mechanicsburg, PA — Cumberland County Softball Clinic Kylie saw a dwindling number of girls involved in softball and she was determined to increase interest in her community. She planned and implemented weekly softball clinics that taught girls the proper techniques, developed new skills with various stations, and showed girls how to stay healthy and safe during the game. The girls attending had fun, exercised, and developed a love for the sport. Hannah Bentz  Lancaster, PA — Lancaster County Mentorship Matters: Helping Youth Plan for the Future Hannah saw that the Nepali refugee youths attending her church had no plans after graduating high school. Her goal was to provide them with accessible educational resources about employment, college, and helpful hints for postgraduation success. She hosted a career day event with guest speakers from different organizations to educate and mentor the high school students. In addition, she created a resource website for anyone in her church’s congregation to access and use.

June 18, 1952 Two Girl Scouts Allyson Butz  Reinholds, PA — Lancaster County Joyful Pillowcases for A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children from Scranton Council earned Allyson’s goal was to bring joy, happiness and comfort to The Curved Bar Award. the families and patients undergoing treatment or recovery at the A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children. She created care packages with a homemade pillowcase in it for the siblings of the patients. Each care package contained the pillowcase, gift card, inspirational message, and cookies. Allyson formed and led a team of volunteers to help her create the handmade pillowcases. Celia Caldwell  East Berlin, PA — Adams County Winged Wonders Celia discovered that the monarch butterfly is in danger of losing its annual migration to Mexico and consequently dying off due to climate factors and human intervention. She created nine educational programs, which reached over 150 people. She also facilitated the planting of over 100 milkweed seedlings, a plant that the caterpillars need to survive. Lastly, Celia raised and released 20 Monarchs to propagate the species. Victoria Carrell  McAdoo, PA — Schuylkill County Paws with Pride in Reading Victoria wanted to boost girls’ self-esteem, particularly when it came to reading out loud. She wanted to show girls that reading can be fun, so she created a relaxing and safe environment where girls can practice their skills by reading aloud to therapy dogs. The girls, in grades K-2, received a reading bag filled with a book, bookmark, baseball cap and reading tips. They also visited learning stations and collected donations for the Hillside SPCA.

Going all the way to First Class taught me so many different skills that I use in all aspects of my life.”

- Angela Hamlin

“Achieving the Gold Award shows YOU and others that you can be a leader in today’s complex world. So many young people are required to complete community service but The Gold Award is something you elect to complete above and beyond service hours required for school. The experiences of evaluating your skills and talents, articulating a project that uses those talents, leading a team to accomplish the project you planned, and reflecting on the experience and how it made the world a better place, is an invaluable skill to illustrate to others in your life, no matter what you end up doing or where you end up living. And, it helps you build great confidence in yourself. You know that you worked hard to achieve a long term project and learned a great deal about yourself and the world in the process.”

“Girls have so many negative things to face in everyday life. The Gold Award allows girls to see that they can make a difference in the lives of many just by doing little things to make the world around them better. I feel that girls have the opportunity to learn about their community, themselves, and others around them. Earning a Gold Award is important to help girls learn new skills and see the progress of their results. When you have a dream, it takes steps to get there. The achievement of earning the Gold Award is something that helps girls find what they need to finish a goal and help shape their world.”
