Dear Friends, Tonight we celebrate girls thriving and changing the world around them as a result of the unique opportunities and encouragement they receive as Girl Scouts. We also celebrate amazing adults within the Girl Scout movement who have made investing in girls their cause.

At Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania we believe that when girls succeed so does society. When a middle school Girl Scout learns how to confront the problem of bullying, everybody wins. When a Girl Scout initiates recycling at her county fair, collects canned food to reduce hunger, or sells cookies using newly acquired business skills, she changes the world. In all of these ways, and many more, Girl Scouts develops girls into leaders who are building a better world for all of us. And the long-term research shows that they will continue to thrive and lead as adults. Women who were Girl Scouts are better educated, earn more and contribute more to their communities than women who were not. Thank you for your support, which helps us bring the Girl Scout experience to girls in each of the 30 counties we serve. Thanks to your investment today’s girls are becoming tomorrow’s leaders.

Bio of Keynote Speaker Anna Maria Chávez began her career journey in the very same Movement she now leads: the Girl Scouts. A lifetime member of Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) and an award-winning community leader, Anna developed the leadership skills that would propel her to the office of the Chief Executive Officer of GSUSA while growing up as a Girl Scout in Eloy, Arizona. Her experiences in Girl Scouting lit a passion for public service and social engagement that have defined her career. Anna’s insight and desire to leave the world a better place led her from her hometown to Yale University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in American history before pursuing a juris doctorate from the James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona. She is admitted to the Bar for the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona, the Arizona Supreme Court, and U.S. Supreme Court. Anna’s desire to serve others brought her first to Washington D.C., where she held numerous posts in President Clinton’s administration, including serving as senior policy advisor to former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Rodney E. Slater. She later returned to her home state of Arizona to serve the first of two female governors as Deputy Chief of Staff for Urban Relations and Community Development under then-Governor Janet Napolitano. In this role, she promoted the governor’s policies, programs, and initiatives in partnership with city, county, and tribal governments, as well as federal agencies and community organizations. During her time in state service, Anna provided oversight for programs targeting food distribution for the hungry, shelter and supportive services for victims of domestic violence, refugee resettlement services, and shelter services for the homeless. Additionally, she oversaw Arizona’s adult services programs, including adult protective services. Looking for opportunities to work with youth and inspire a new generation of female leaders, Anna returned to the Girl Scout Movement in 2009, serving as Chief Executive Officer of Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas. Her achievements leading the Southwest Texas council include vastly enhancing the reach and visibility of the Council, growing the Council’s philanthropic efforts, and boosting membership. Her success earned her the respect and recognition of GSUSA’s National Board, who appointed her CEO of the Girl Scouts of the USA in 2011. Lauded for her leadership, Ms. Chávez received the 2013 Law College Association Award from her law school alma mater, the University of Arizona, and has been recognized as one of the 100 Women Leaders in STEM by STEM connector. She is the recipient of the 2013 Excellence in Community Service award from the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, as well as the 2013 Graciela Olivarez La Raza Award from the National Council of La Raza. In addition, the Arizona National Guard presented Anna with the Adjutant General’s Medal and the Diversity Champion Leadership Award. 7

Rising Star Award Alisa Hoverter Dillsburg York County Rising Star Award
Nine-year-old Alisa Hoverter, from Brownie Troop 20499, shows us that a girl can be a heroine at any age. In September 2012, Alisa was staying with her grandmother when she came into the room to find her hunched over in her chair. Alisa remained calm as she found the phone and called 911. Despite not knowing her grandmother’s address, she was able to tell the dispatcher descriptive details to help the officers and paramedics find the house. Once paramedic help arrived, Alisa was able to tell them what medications her grandmother was taking and where she kept them. With Alisa’s help the Carroll Township police were able to respond to her 911 call in three minutes. On March 11th, 2013 Alisa was honored with a certificate of recognition by the Carroll Township Police. Officer Ron Stiles stated that he had no doubt in his mind that Alisa saved her grandmother’s life. He continued to say he was impressed with her ability to stay calm throughout the event. In addition, Alisa was also honored with the “Most Helpful Award” by Monaghan Township. Alisa is daughter of Troy and Ann Marie Hoverter and attends Northern Elementary School. She has been a Girl Scout for three years.
Brianna Faith Kiretchjian Milford Pike County Rising Star Award
When Brianna was 12-years-old and in Girl Scout Cadette Troop 52696 she had a life altering experience. Brianna noticed her mother was slurring her speech and saying things that were not making any sense. Brianna stayed with her mother and monitored her behavior while frequently checking in on her younger brother. Noticing that she was getting worse, she phoned her father at work to come home. She told her mother that she needed to go to the hospital but her mother refused, stating she was tired. Brianna continued to observe strange behavior and searched her mother’s symptoms online and suspected it was TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack) or a mini-stroke. Finally Brianna convinced her mother to let her father drive her to the hospital. Her mother was immediately admitted to the hospital where the medical staff determined that she was suffering from a stroke, and was treated immediately. Brianna received the Medal of Honor from Girl Scouts of the USA for her quick thinking and persistence in a lifesaving situation. She is daughter of Gregory and Patti Kiretchjian and attends Dingman-Delaware Middle School. She has been a Girl Scout for eight years.

Rising Star Award Rebecca ‘Becky’ Van Kirk State College Centre County Rising Star Award
In February 2013, Becky from Cadette Troop 41374 was with her father, Dr. John Van Kirk, when he suffered a massive brainstem stroke. He explained to her that he felt like he was going to pass out and Becky assisted him safely to the floor to ensure that he did not collapse and hit his head. “Her quick and brave thinking helped prevent a variety of potential injuries, including facial fractures, cervical spine fractures, skull fracture, cerebral hematomas or other potentially dangerous injuries,” said Dr. Teresa Dolan. After Becky assisted her father, she went to inform her mother about the symptoms that her father was experiencing. While Mrs. Van Kirk attended to her husband, Becky was able to assist her mother. Her calm demeanor allowed Mrs. Van Kirk to focus on her husband. “The most important thing is to stay calm,” said Becky. “Our Girl Scout troop has earned the First Aid badge at Brownie, Junior and Cadette level so I had a lot of knowledge in that area,” said Becky, “We have talked numerous times about what to do in emergencies while earning these badges.” Becky, who was 11 years-old when she saved her father’s life, received the Medal of Honor in November 2013. She is daughter of John and Suzanne Van Kirk and a student of Park Forest Middle School. She has been a Girl Scout for nine years.
When you just can’t wait for what you’ll do next, you can do anything. At Girl Scouts, girls are always counting down to the next adventure we’ll go on together. Maybe it’s artistic. Maybe it’s an experiment. Maybe it’s getting outside or helping the community. With us, you’ll make a bunch of new friends and have a ton of new experiences that show you how exciting the world is, and how awesome you are, over and over again. So what are you waiting for?

Trailblazer Award Rebecca Cole
Harrisburg Dauphin County Trailblazer Award Rebecca Cole of Harrisburg has been a Girl Scout for 11 years and in that time she has achieved an impressive list of awards, which include her Bronze, Silver and the most prestigious award in Girl Scouting-the Gold Award. Her Gold Award project, Triple A-Ok-Aaron’s Acres Acts of Kindness, created community service opportunities for young people with disabilities. While she showed the campers at Aaron’s Acres Camp that they could do anything, she also provided the community with a new stream of dedicated volunteers. Driven by her passion for equality, she wanted to show that respect, fairness and compassion for one another is crucial for a community to thrive. Through her project she showed the campers how they can be leaders in dayto-day life. As much as Rebecca’s project made a difference in her community, it also made a difference in her life. “My passion is to help people with special needs, but I am beginning to realize that it is more than that. It is starting to become a lifestyle. I have learned that I truly love the idea of helping others, even if it means sacrificing something of my own,” she said. Rebecca is daughter of Anthony and Maggie Cole. She graduated from Bishop-McDevitt High School and began her 5-year, entry-level, Master of Science program in occupational therapy at the University of Scranton.
Grace Wagler Hershey Dauphin County Trailblazer Award
Grace Wagler’s ambition and passion for helping others shines bright and inspires the community to join her cause. Grace earned her Gold Award in 2012 by creating a pilot reading/relationship building program called Intergenerational Story Time at Country Meadows. The program was created to mutually benefit preschool children and residents suffering from dementia at Country Meadows.. The 11-week program taught the children something new and instilled in them a love of learning. For elderly participants, it provided a purposeful, relationship-based activity that reduced their boredom, stress and depression for an overall improvement in their quality of life. Grace was able to connect with Penn State College of Medicine, The Hershey Public Library and Country Meadows in order to make her community a better place. Grace’s work continues to make a difference at the retirement community. Her work has been published in medical journals and she was invited to make a presentation at Penn State University. “The Gold Award can help set the track for the rest of your life. It is your project and you put a piece of yourself into it,” said Grace. Grace is a graduate of Bishop-McDevitt High School and daughter of Daniel and Frances Wagler. Grace plans to continue where her Gold Award project left off. She is in the process of completing a 3-year biopsychology degree at Mount St. Mary’s University and plans on attending medical school with a focus in Alzheimer’s and dementia. 12
Distinguished Leadership Award Crystal ‘Cris’ Christ Annville Lebanon County Distinguished Leadership Award
Cris Christ has been a Girl Scout volunteer for 18 years. She was a role model for her daughter and her fellow Girl Scouts from Daisies to Ambassadors. Even after her daughter graduated, Cris stayed on as a leader. Cris currently volunteers in Girl Scout Community 703-Pine Mountain while working at The Hershey Company. She is always ready and willing to help whenever and wherever she is needed. When three Communities needed a cookie liaison she stepped forward so that all the Communities could sell cookies and learn real life business skills. She can even be found in the dining hall kitchen at camps preparing meals for Girl Scouts and volunteers at weekend encampments. Cris has helped other volunteers over the past five years by participating in Adult Volunteer Training weekends and feels that she has also benefitted from GSHPA’s mission. She said: I feel without Girl Scouts I don’t think I would have the confidence that I have now. I never thought I would be able to stand in front of a group of my peers at work and do presentations or teach a class. GSHPA Membership Associate, Cindy, said that “Cris has a huge heart and is a very giving person.” This shows through when you hear Cris talk about the girls she has led. She said: I enjoy helping the girls achieve something that they didn’t think they could. I enjoy seeing how far the girls go with their lives after scouting, and having one come up to me many years later and saying, ‘Do you remember me? I was in your Girl Scout troop.

Distinguished Leadership Award Amy L. Martin-Rineer Drumore Lancaster County Distinguished Leadership Award
As a girl, Amy worked her way through all the Girl Scout troop levels and upon graduating decided that she wanted to continue on as a Girl Scout, but in the form of a leader. With 17 years of Girl Scout experience she provides guidance and helps with everything from cookies to training. Amy has led troops at various levels, served as a Community Lead, helped as Girl Scout Community Fall Product and Cookie Program Manager and a Troop Leader Coach. While she volunteers in all areas of Girl Scouting, the best part is working directly with the girls. Amy said: My favorite part is partnering with the girls to assist them in planning activities throughout the year that will allow them to expand on their experiences. It is awesome to see the girls grow through the program and see the young women they have become and how they are contributing to their community. She also reaches out to other volunteers and shares her enthusiasm for Girl Scouting with all. She is very active on the regional level helping with volunteer enrichment weekends, trainings and recruitment efforts. Amy is always ready to pitch in whenever there is a project or step up wherever a volunteer is needed. Amy currently volunteers with Girl Scout Community 708-Solanco. She works at IREX Corporation as an IT Project Manager. She said: Volunteering allows me the opportunity to give back to an organization that has done so much for me in both my personal experiences as well as my career. Knowing that the few hours that I give on a weekly basis is impacting girls’ lives is a great feeling!

GIRL SCOUT LAW
GIRL SCOUT PROMISE
I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.
On my honor, I will try: To serve God* and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law
* The word “God” can be interpreted in a number of ways, depending on one’s spiritual beliefs. When reciting the Girl Scout Promise, it is okay to replace the word “God” with whatever word your spiritual beliefs dictate.
Inspiring Generations 2014 Award Senator Patricia H. Vance Inspiring Generations 2014 Award
As a young girl growing up in Harrisburg, Patricia Huston Vance joined a Brownie Girl Scout troop when she attended Steele Elementary School. The troop leaders were Maria Norates and her mother, Mrs. Peters. The weekly meetings were held in the basement of the Camp Curtin Methodist Church located on North Sixth Street. Vance, who still has her Brownie ring, was a Girl Scout through the Intermediate Level. Her fondest memories of Girl Scouting are camping at Pine Grove which is located in Cumberland County. Senator Vance represents portions of York and Cumberland Counties and is the only member of the Legislature who is a professional nurse. She has been a member of the Senate since 2005 after serving 14 years in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. She is chair of the Public Health and Welfare Committee and a member of the Appropriations, Banking and Insurance, Communications and Technology, Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure, Finance and Policy committees. She also serves on the Capitol Preservation Committee. Since becoming a member of the Senate, she has authored twenty-two laws and while a member of the House she authored eighteen laws. Among others these laws include defining procedures for filing complaints of abuse, neglect and exploitation of adults with cognitive or physical disabilities; blending the state’s prescription drug program for low income seniors with Medicare Part D; prohibiting discrimination against domestic violence victims by insurance companies merely because they were the victims of abuse and granting parents the authority to be involved in the drug and alcohol treatment decisions of their minor children. She has received numerous awards for her legislative and community stewardship. These include, among others, the Outstanding Community Service Award from the Asian Indian Americans of Central Pennsylvania; Molly Pitcher Award – Carlisle Area Citizen of the Year for 2008 from the Exchange Club of Carlisle; Distinguished service to Families Award from the Mid-Atlantic Council on Family Relations; and the 2008 Advocate for Child Health Legislative Award from the Pennsylvania State Education Association – School Nurse Section. In addition, she was the Cumberland Valley Eagle Foundation’s 2006 Community Leader of the Year.
