FICTION at Miles Franklin Literary Award The Labyrinth Amanda Lohrey

This is the seventh novel by Tasmanian author Amanda Lohrey, one which the Miles Franklin judges praised as "a beautifully written reflection on the conflicts between parents and children, men and women, and the value and purpose of creative work". Erica Marsden's son, an artist, has been imprisoned for homicidal negligence. In a state of grief, Erica cuts off all ties to family and friends, and retreats to a quiet hamlet on the south-east coast near the prison where he is serving his sentence. There, in a rundown shack, she obsesses over creating a labyrinth by the ocean. This is a hypnotic story of guilt and denial, of the fraught relationship between parents and children, and a meditation on how art can be both ruthlessly destructive and restore sanity. Pb $29.99

Pip Williams

Esme spends her childhood in the 'Scriptorium', a garden shed in Oxford where her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Esme's place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word 'bondmaid' flutters to the floor. Esme rescues the slip and stashes it. She begins to collect other words from the Scriptorium that are misplaced, discarded or neglected by the dictionary men. Set when the women's suffrage movement was at its height and the Great War loomed, this novel reveals a lost narrative, hidden between the lines of a history written by men. It's a delightful, lyrical and deeply thought-provoking celebration of words and the power of language to shape the world and our experience of it. Pb $19.99

Cloud Cuckoo Land Anthony Doerr

The Magician Colm Tóibín

A vast, interconnected story of three different times, all bound by one miraculously surviving ancient Greek text. Anna in 1453 Constantinople and Omeir of the surrounding armies; octogenarian Zeno and teenaged Seymour in contemporary Idaho; Konstance on a spaceship heading towards a planet she will never live long enough to settle. How these disparate people and their tales intertwine is storytelling at its finest. At times heartbreaking and tough, ultimately this is an uplifting tribute to the power of literature and human resilience. A beautiful achievement definitely one of my favourites of the year. Lindy Pb $32.99

This exquisite new novel from Tóibín tells the story of Thomas Mann and his unique family, including his tortured son Klaus and outspoken daughter Erika. Initially reluctant to denounce the Nazi Party, we see his love of Germany slowly dissipate as his country chooses a path that he does not recognise. We follow the peripatetic life of the Manns with Tóibín's deft touch and acute observations, making this a truly memorable read. Greg Pb $32.99

Bewilderment Richard Powers

7½ Christos Tsiolkas

Theo is an astrobiologist searching for life on other planets. He is also a single parent; his son Robin is a clever, intuitive, but deeply troubled young boy. Ignoring the temptation of Big Pharma for help, Theo enrols Robin in a revolutionary, drug-free program - with consequences for both of them. The Pulitzer Prizewinning author of The Overstory ($19.99) taps into the recent atmosphere in the US where both nature and science are under threat. A touching and thoughtful read. Greg Pb $32.99

A writer retreats to the south coast to work on ideas he has carried around for a decade. They concern Paul, who accepts a lucrative offer to relive his past identity as a porn star. As Christos grapples with characters and plot, he draws upon his lifetime experiences as a man and a gay, remembering both shame and beauty. Nature, ocean and bush are intensely felt and powerfully restorative, feeding his need for retreat, but also triggering the impetus to go forward. Full of sensual and intimate details, this is a striking novel of escape and return, creation and destruction, love and joy. Lindy Pb $32.99

The Magpie Wing Max Easton

Duncan and Walt become best friends over football, where as juniors they show great promise. Walt's sister Helen is also a talented footballer, but as a girl in the 1990s, she isn't going to go too far with that as a career. As they grow through their teens to their early twenties, the three are looking for different identities and other senses of belonging in inner-city suburbs, while being firmly planted in their south-western Sydney origins... A grungy, coming-of-age novel, full of underground music and political scenes, and a vibrantly dark energy. Lindy Pb $26.95

The Lincoln Highway Amor Towles

Emmett Watson, 18, is heading home after being detained for manslaughter. The plan is to leave Nebraska for California on the Lincoln Highway with his perpetually inquisitive 8-year-old brother Billy, but they end up with two unexpected stowaways and the plan suddenly changes. By the author of Rules of Civility ($22.99) and A Gentleman in Moscow ($19.99), this is a truly joyous read - the ultimate road trip with unforgettable characters that we meet and fall in love with along the way. Greg Pb $32.99

In Moonland Miles Allinson

Three different stories - one in present-day Melbourne, the second in India with the Bhagwan Rajneesh, and the third in the nottoo-distant future. The stories are linked a man searches for answers in explaining his father's suicide; the father joins the Bhagwan ashram, also searching for answers; and a daughter reaches out to her father. There are no easy answers here; they always seem just out of reach. The author has a wonderful way of keeping you engaged, yet also making you work. Both political and personal, this novel makes Allinson - author of Fever of Animals ($29.99) - a writer to keep an eye on. Greg

Scary Monsters Michelle de Kretser

3

Two novellas presented in a flip format, with no right order of reading them, and which on the surface seem to have no link, this is an audacious and brilliant book! Lili is set in Montpellier in 1981. Lyle is set in Melbourne in the not-toodistant future, where environmental catastrophes are commonplace and consumerism has become all-too-consuming. Both Lili and Lyle are of unspecified Asian background; both are trying to find - or keep - their place in societies that don't value migrants. Witty, sardonic, intelligent and thought-provoking. The history of selling sex is a hidden one, and this illuminating and lively book reveals the world's oldest profession in many of its guises. MacGillis tells the stories of those who have thrived, and struggled to thrive, showing how Amazon's sprawling network of delivery hubs, data centres and corporate campuses epitomises a land where winner and loser cities and regions are drifting steadily apart, the civic fabric is unravelling, and work has become increasingly rudimentary and isolated. “First, do no harm” seems to be forgotten in modern medicine. Two leading doctors reveal how the medical industrial complex is perverting the health profession. Overdiagnosis, overtreatment and turning normal life into pre-disease conditions are true threats to health. Modern medicine is not as effective, safe, scientific or honest as it should be, and this book examines how the system is based on treating, not preventing, illness. It also empowers patients by giving them the right questions to ask. Pb $32.99

Joe Abercrombie

Abercrombie is the Lord of Grim Dark Fantasy. His stuff is funny and violent, especially when it needs to be. It’s cleverly plotted. Everything is there for a reason, and the character motivations are always human and relatable. They just happen to involve swords... a lot! This new series is partly about the effect of (magical) industrialisation in the world and it is, as you’d expect, brilliant! Craig Pb $32.99

#1 Bloodsworn Saga

John Gwynne

This series debut, released in May this year, is a hell of a ride. Rich in Viking mythology brought to life. The tone is grim and bloody. The fight scenes flow with detail. The many hours that John spent with the dead weight of a shield strapped to his arm while some guy banged him on the helm have paid off. Feel the tug of the heavy mail. Feel the burn in an exhausted sword arm. Hear the ragged breaths being sucked in. Smell the sweat. Do yourself a favour and get involved. Craig Pb $32.99

Garth Nix is one of our favourite authors here at Galaxy. His worlds are as terrifying as they are enticing, and his characters real and human. This book is a prequel to the Sabriel (Old Kingdom) series that was a pathway for many of us into Fantasy, and returns to the feel of the ‘original’ trilogy, which will have fans rejoicing! Craig Pb $24.99

Child of Light Terry Brooks

A surprise new book by the author of the Shannara Saga (with no connection to that series). Much more young adult than his previous writings, this is urban fantasy with a smidge of science fiction and a hint of old-school fantasy, mostly coloured with a dystopian brush. At its heart, it’s a tale of human (heavy on the mechanical and technology) vs fae (gentle and natural) from the viewpoint of a character caught between the two worlds. Craig Pb $32.99

The Gilded Cage #2 Prison Healer Lynette Noni

If you read The Prison Healer ($24.99), you’ll know that Kiva is adjusting to a new environment, torn between her rebel family and the royal enemy who looked after her. I felt that Kiva was safe, but that something was about to go wrong... On. Every. Single. Page. There are many plot twists - some anticipated, others a total blindside. This may be a ‘middle’ book, but with a balance of intrigue, world-building, character development, complex relationships and an amazing slow-burn romance, it’s definitely no filler. Warning: cliffhanger ending! Give me The Blood Traitor yesterday! Allison Pb $24.99

Even Greater Mistakes Stories Charlie Jane Anders

The Midnight Girls Alicia Jasinska

Another standout success for a local author with this Sapphic lovers-to-enemies tale set against a fantastical Eastern European backdrop. The tale goes as such: three witches (Red Jaga, Black Jaga and White Jaga) each send out their servants (Midnight, Midday and Morning) to steal the hearts out of princes’ chests so the witches can eat them. And so the servants set off in competition for a pure heart in an epic rivalry that’s a thrill to read. Bronte-Marie Pb $19.99

A decadent debut duology - starting with These Violent Delights ($17.99) - set in 1930s Shanghai. This Romeo and Juliet retelling is a total surprise in the realm of enemies-to-lovers tales, with forbidden romance, a city-wide mystery and a backdrop of debauchery and rich history. Somewhere between Pacific Rim and Handmaid’s Tale, this is a hell of a debut and well worth a read! Bronte-Marie
