Book of the Year

Love Stories Trent Dalton

I’ve always thought that people’s love stories are their best ones, so I think this is a wonderful book! Dalton set himself up with a typewriter on a Brisbane city street for a couple of months in 2021 with a sign that asked passers-by to tell him a love story. And they did! Stories of love kept and lost, past and optimistically of the future, heartbreaking ones and heart-warming ones. A beautiful collection, moving, profound, sometimes funny and presented with deep and direct empathy. Lindy Hb $32.99

Bodies of Light Jennifer Down

Maggie has reinvented herself a number of times since her childhood. Severely traumatised, abused from an early age and then institutionalised, she is a flawed and complex character who has managed to survive all the ills that society and circumstance have put her through. A heartbreaking and tender portrayal of a woman who has suffered greatly, yet still found the inner strength and resilience to make her own life.

ABIA Book of the Year

Love and Virtue Diana Reid

This debut novel centres on the friendship between two first-year university students, Eve and Michaela, as they navigate life on campus at a prestigious Sydney university. Reid explores themes of privilege, wealth, entitlement, class and toxic masculinity. She also expertly tackles topics like feminism, consent and unequal power dynamics in relationships in a very thought-provoking way. I found the characters strikingly real and intriguing, and also loved reading about local Sydney places. A wonderful, powerful book! Hannah Pb $22.99

Seeing Other People Diana Reid

An absorbing and reflective novel centred around two sisters in their 20s in post-lockdown Sydney. Reid expertly captures the atmosphere of Sydney’s inner west and the feeling of hot, slow summers. She focuses on the uncertainty and peculiarity of redefining a sibling relationship as adults out of the childhood family dynamic. The characters are real and complicated, the situations they find themselves in messy. Her writing is sharp, observant and wry; she writes with humour, but also with a sense of gravity, about the complexities of navigating familial and romantic relationships. A stunning and thought-provoking summer read! Hannah Pb $32.99

Salonika Burning Gail Jones

The year is 1917 and the great town of Salonika (present day Thessaloniki) is nearly destroyed by fire. Amidst the ensuing chaos, four people - referred to only by their first names, but loosely based on the historical figures Stella Franklin, Olive King, Grace Pailthorpe and Stanley Spencer - try to cope with the horrors they’re witnessing. Jones’ economical use of language has a power all of its own, while she embroiders the odd sentence with a gravitas that prompts you to look up from the page to ponder and reflect. Recommended. Good people can be capable of evil, and evil people do good deeds... Throughout the voyage of Endeavour (1768-71), Cook hid his important strategic discoveries, including Bass Strait and Sydney Harbour, in order to deny their existence to the French - who also wanted to colonise the lands of the Pacificuntil Britain could afford to send an occupation force. Cameron-Ash also provides a fascinating account of what was going on in Europe at that time. Very enjoyable! Eve Hb $44.95

Matthew Flinders The Man Behind the Map Gillian Dooley

Born at the end of the Age of Enlightenment and growing up as Romanticism took hold, Flinders was the embodiment of these seemingly irreconcilable movements. His achievements as a navigator and leader are impressive, but he was much more than an action hero, idolised by generations of admirers. Dooley looks to primary sources to reveal Flinders as a friend, son, brother, father and husband, and also as a writer, researcher, reader, musician and, above all, a romantic scientist. Pb $39.95

The Golden Enclaves #3 Scholomance Naomi Novik

The one thing you never talk about while you’re in the Scholomance is what you’ll do when you get out. But that impossible dream has somehow come true for El and her classmates.

And what’s more, she didn’t even have to become the monstrous dark witch she was prophesised to become to make it happen. Peace and harmony have enveloped all the enclaves of the world. Just kidding... Pb $32.99

Ledge #1 Glacian Trilogy

Stacey McEwan

A thrilling debut set in a frozen wasteland known as The Ledge, where a civilisation is trapped by a vast chasm and sheer mountain face. They know nothing of the outside world, except that it’s the home of The Glacians - mystical winged creatures who bring them meagre rations in exchange for a human sacrifice. Dawsyn, axe-wielder and only remaining member of her family, has so far avoided the random culling, until now... Pb $32.99

The Whispering Dark Kelly Andrew

An urban fantasy academia tale, beautifully told in lyrical prose, this is a layered and complex story, riddled with secrets that are well revealed as the story progresses. The protagonist is deaf and has always been considered fragile. She has a point to provewhich is relatable to most of us. While definitely a YA novel, this has a depth and complexity that readers of any age will appreciate. Craig Pb $22.99

Blitz #3 Rook Files Daniel O’Malley

This urban fantasy series is easily one of my favourites. Australian author O’Malley really knows how to write! Including The Rook and Stiletto ($22.99 each), it’s comparable to the Rivers of London series - add a British spy, more supernatural and more magical abilities and you get the idea. The story has engaging characters, a proper mystery element and is creative, complex and fast-paced, so it's ludicrously hard to put down. I reckon this series has flown under the radar and deserves far more attentionwhich will quickly turn into appreciation! Craig Pb $32.99

The Book Eaters Sunyi Dean

A tale of a secret society of creatures who live off books, and a mother who’ll do anything for her son. The masterful prose lends itself well to this twisty tale of survival in the English countryside. Fierce, feminine and with more teeth than a shark, this is riveting urban fantasy! For fans of Ben Aaronovitch and Catherynne M Valente. Bronte-Marie Pb $32.99

Poster Girl #2 Chosen Ones Veronica Roth

This is an intelligent, raw, emotional dystopian thriller that asks deep questions about human nature, society and freedom. The supremely talented Veronica Roth, author of the bestselling Divergent series, is at the top of her game here in the follow-up to The Chosen Ones ($22.99) with searing prose, deft world-building and a layered, propulsive plot that keeps you turning the pages! The Branded Jo Riccioni

Local author

Isfalk is divided into two classes: the Branded, who are vulnerable to disease, and the Pure, who are bigger, stronger and immune. Orphaned twins Nara and Osha are sequestered in the citadel, where their unbranded skin entitles them to a life of privilege... until things go awry and they’re forced to face their own prophecies. An epic, high-concept speculative novel with explosive ideas around gender and class, served up with romance, conflict and quick-fire narrative pace. Pb $29.99

A dystopian novel about the end of the world and the story of the last storyteller. There lived a girl named Petra Peña who wanted nothing more than to be a storyteller like her grandmother. But Petra's world is ending. Earth has been destroyed by a comet, and only a few hundred scientists and their children have been chosen to journey to a new planet, where they must carry on the memory of Earth. A touching story of ancestry, family and the things that bind us as humans in the wake of a calamity. Pb $16.99

One Dark Window #1 Shepherd King

Rachel Gillig

This gothic fantasy is set in a mist-locked kingdom where a maiden joins forces with the king’s treasonous nephew and his band of highwaymen, while hiding not only her magic, but the monster trapped in her head. A dark, atmospheric novel written in a lyrical style that sweeps you away from your world and into the world of these fascinating characters - with an angst-filled, slow-burn romance to boot! Pb $22.99

1911, New York City, and 17-year-old Frances spends her days as a seamstress, mourning the death of her brother. Everything changes when she’s attacked and a man ends up dead at her feet, her scissors in his neck. Before she can be condemned, two cape-wearing nurses tell her she is deathly ill and must report to Haxahaven Sanitarium... which isn’t a sanitarium at all, but a school for witches. Pb $22.99

The First Binding #1 Tales of Tremaine R R Virdi

This spellbinding South Asian high fantasy debut harkens back to the tales of Kvothe in the epic Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss. In this sprawling tale, a storyteller and a singer are on the run, but the sins of their past are catching up. If you’re a reader of classic high fantasy, this is a fresh new voice in the genre to look out for - full of lyrical prose that borders on poetic. Pb $32.99

The Art of Prophecy

#1 War Arts Saga

Wesley Chu

From the author of The Lives of Tao ($21.95), this is an epic fantasy ode to martial arts and magic - the story of a spoiled hero, an exacting grandmaster and an immortal god-king. It has been foretold: a child will rise to defeat the Eternal Khan - a cruel immortal god-king - and save the kingdom. The hero: Jian - raised since birth in luxury and splendour, and celebrated before he’s won a single battle. But the prophecy is wrong... Pb $32.99

Terry Pratchett A Life with Footnotes

Rob Wilkins

An absolute must for all the Pratchett fans out there who are still a little sad about the loss of the great man. I know I am. Wilkins was Terry’s assistant, in every sense of the word, for 20-odd years and his personal insight into the man and the writer is fascinating. This is a wonderful and perceptive portrait - smeared paint and all - and was a truly rewarding read (if at times emotionally difficult). Craig Pb $35

Empire of the Vampire #1 Empire of the Vampire Jay Kristoff

This book should have sunk like a lead balloon in light of the ideas - part-vampire, vampire-hunters, in a fantasy world, during an everlasting eclipse, with a bit of holy grail woven in - but it was an incredible success because Kristoff is one hell of a writer! Dark, bloody, funny, smart and engaging, it totally knocks the sparkle off vampires and takes them wholeheartedly in a fresh new direction... You’ll want to get on this ride ASAP - the train is gaining momentum! Craig Hb

When an elderly neighbour passes away, he’s left with a cassette tape that tells a story no one would believe - the locked shed in the old man’s yard is a portal to a parallel world where good and evil are at war. A suspenseful and satisfying tale from the legendary storyteller. Pb $32.99

Koral’s only choice: cheat her way into the Glory Race… Pb $22.99

Motherthing Ainslie Hogarth

A darkly funny, domestic horror novel about a woman who must take drastic measures to save her husband and herself from the vengeful ghost of her mother-in-law. Full of black, wry humour and the terrifying prospect of your in-laws hanging around for far longer than you’d hoped! Pb $29.99

Cruel Illusions

Margie Fuston

Stephanie Garber’s Caraval ($19.99) meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer in this deliciously dark tale of a girl who makes a deal with a magical secret society to enter a potentially deadly competition for the chance to avenge her mother’s death. With a twisting plot, a gritty edge to its vampirism and a romance to top it off, this has everything that lovers of Young Adult fantasy could wish for! Pb $22.99

Foul Lady Fortune #1 Chloe Gong

From the author of the standout debut, These Violent Delights ($17.99), comes a speculative historical noir set at the time of Imperial Japan’s expansion into China in the 1930s. A familiar character is recruited as a national spy, maintaining her false identity by posing as the wife of a cavalier playboy whose demeanour she finds infuriating - and who might be the very enemy she’s meant to be watching! Pb $22.99

A graphic novel retelling of the myth of Hades and Persephone that imbues a decidedly whimsical charm into this age-old tale. The goddess of spring, Persephone, finally debuts into society after a sheltered upbringing in the mortal world, only to find that Olympus is a complicated place. Between navigating issues with her scholarship, her own secrets and her strained relationship with her mother, Persephone can’t afford to fall headfirst into Hades, but love waits for no one - even a goddess. Pb $35

Ruination #1 League of Legends Anthony Reynolds

The first novel set in the universe of the blockbuster video game, League of Legends, and hot on the heels of the success of Arcane, the animated TV series from the same world.
