Wide Leg Pants Leisure and comfort are the key moods of the modern woman. Beauty is no longer pain, it can be cool and comfortable. And what’s more comfortable than big pants? In the 1920’s, Coco Chanel discovered the wide-leg pant on a trip to Venice. She fell in love with this new silhouette that has the taste and tailoring of nice trousers or a dress, but the comfort of loungewear. She brought this unrestrictive silhouette into high fashion, and it took off. The wide-leg trouser has come in and out through the years, coming back in the 70s with denim, and then in the 90’s with both the loose grunge look and the power trouser. We saw JNCO jeans take their peak in 1998, but then denim quickly turned back into the low-rise skinny jean. As we move forward, style has become increasingly minimalist and comfort focused, bringing back the wide-leg pant. This silhouette is found in all different styles, from athleisure to workwear. They are popular in streetstyle, since they fit the look of so many different fashion tribes.

IKEA LOGO

IKEA captures the new generations movement to cool and minimal living spaces, but still affordable. Younger people are content with building their own furniture; Buzzfeed even makes relatable vlogs about it. IKEA resonates with the youth. It makes sense that the IKEA logo has made its way into DIY streetwear. The concept started with Balenciaga’s knockoff of the standard $0.99 Frakta tote that was sold for $2,145. The Balenciaga bag was a big deal, since it caused people to really think about why a bag that looks so similar to this tote costs so much more, and really break down the functionality of a bag. Of course, this also sparked IKEA and Balenciaga memes. These memes, however, turned into a real trend in streetwear. Since the Frakta bag is only $0.99, it is a cheap and easy material to cut up and redesign. People are able to bring the DIY element of IKEA furniture into their custom streetwear. Logos bands in straps, waistbands, etc., are popular in streetwear, so replacing that with the IKEA logo strap is a no-brainer. These clothes were made with some irony, as a way to mock the Balenciaga bag and poke fun at consumerism. But, as many “ironic” looks integrate into streetwear, it moves into being cool and trendy. The IKEA logo moved from a few DIY looks to clothes that were being sold online.

Oval Sunglasses

These sunglasses have a thick elongated oval frame. The original mod style is a white frame with black tinted lenses, as worn by Kurt Cobain. As the glasses gained popularity, brands began selling them in multiple colorways. Frames and lenses are now available in different shades. High fashion brands like Saint Laurent and Acne made versions of these glasses in the $100-$300 range, but soon they could be bought for $7 on Amazon or at Forever21. What is interesting about these glasses is that they have a unique retro look, but they are worn by many different style tribes. They gained internet popularity after “mumble rappers” began wearing them. Rapper Denzel Curry made a Vine saying “this girl said “I like your glasses” I told her “baby, these ain’t glasses... These Clout Goggles”. As people wanted to recreate looks from the new rappers, popularity of “clout goggles” spread through hypebeast-type style tribes. But, the trend did not stop there. It spread to the alternative and edgy influencers, the modern-day artistic club kids. Influential makeup artists such as @anythingforselenaaas and @sydn4sty posted pictures in their own unique pairs of glasses. This trend was able to spread so far because of the types of people that started it: Kurt Cobain and modern rappers. These two styles combined are what shape the cool youth, they are what inspire the fresh and influential festival looks that define seasons and streetwear. Oval sunglasses bring a cool 90’s vibe to the alternative dressers.

Camo Pants “I saw Cady Heron wearing army pants and flip flops, so I bought army pants and flip flops” Mean Girls, 2004. Camo pants are a throwback to the 90s/early 2000s casual streetwear. They fit the lifestyle of comfort that modern girls want. Bape is a brand that helped revitalize camo pants so that they don’t have the classic hunter feel, and instead get a cool streetwear vibe. Camo pants are remade to have electric colorways in oversized, bold patterns. They are commonly styled with fitted crop tops to help regain the definition that the oversized pants lost. This past summer, Kylie Jenner came out with a line of camo clothing that sparked controversy because a brand called her out for stealing the designs. There is a lot of proof that Kylie’s company did steal the design, since they ordered multiple pieces from the original designer. This shows that the brand recognized an upcoming trend, but instead of recreating it in a new way, they just copied another designer.

reconstructed blouse The reconstructed blouse takes the effortless chic of a crisp button-up shirt into an experimental, fresh look. This is a fun and innovative take on a classic. Because they come from the classic blouse, reconstructed shirts are still styled in the same ways as the button-up. They’re a great addition to a suit, frayed jeans, or mini-skirt. The reconstructed blouse is a staple piece without being too overpowering. There are many names for this look, “the shirt,” “shirt 2.0,” “deconstructed shirt,” but reconstruced blouse best exemplifies the way that these classic button-ups are reconstructed in innovative ways. Designers, fashion bloggers, and DIY creators have all found different ways to create and style the reconstructed blouse. Design details are what creates its unique look. These details can be found in the arrangement of buttons, oversized sleeves, ruffles, ties, holes, clasps, corsets, and an overwhelming amount of off-the-shoulder silhouettes. Off-the-shoulder tops have become widely popular the past few years, and the reconstructed blouse fits well into that trend. Not everyone took well to this trend. People who see the button-up as the go-to sartorial shirt do not like how it is being reinvented in an innovative, deconstructd way. Racked published an article called “We Need to Talk About These Goddamn Shirts” calls them a bizarre symptom of something deeply sinister.

Lone lingerie

As dress norms change and trends become more experimental, lingerie is getting a new life. It can be worn alone or over clothing rather than under it. The lingerie market has always been big, but the biggest problem is that people don’t want to spend hundreds on garments that will hardly be seen. Milennials value their purchases, and don’t want anything to go to waste. This is one of the reasons why now is the time for lingerie to take off as a piece of clothing rather than just undergarments. slip dresses were popular in the 90s, and had a bit of a comeback in recent years, which encouraged trendsetters to go a step further and wear visible lingerie. However, this trend cannot be forced. It is one that had to happen naturally, due to the taboo/sensitive nature of lingerie. Women don’t want to feel like they’re being pressured to show skin and be sexy. That is why the Victoria’s Secret “(un)dress code” august 2016 campaign was not well received. The campaign had 7 pieces made of translucent lace, including a pencil skirt, bodysuit, and multiple bralettes worn as tops. Buzzfeed posted an article that included multiple tweets from women about how impractical the clothes are. Skip forward one year, and we see influencers layering sheer lingerie back into their looks. As streetstyle becomes more experimental, women are more open to wearing clothes in ways other than how they are intended.

SPORTCORE

Sportcore stems from normcore, but with an athleisure twist. it’s not as edgy as the adidas-type athleisure, but still has the cool athletic vibe. Sportcore also coincides with the rise in gender-neutral clothing, since it consists mainly of a-line silhouettes in sweatshirts and t-shirts. sportcore takes heavy inspiration from streetstyle in korea and 90s hip hop. The classic 90s sportswear brands are using this trend to make their comeback. Brands like Champion and FILA were popular with 90s hip hop artists and athletes, and made their way down into mainstream style. With the new millennium, these sportswear brands had oversaturated the market and lost their street cred. Since everyone had these, and the trends changed, Champion and FILA sportswear trickled down into Walmart and other low quality retailers. With the 20 year trend cycle, these brands are now able to make their return. They are doing this by collaborating on capsule collections with a variety of brands, the most accessible being Urban Outfitters. Champion has also collaborated with Vetement, BAPE, Stussy, and Off-White. The Off-White collection ranges from $300-725 for a hoodie, even though it is made to look like vintage Champion. There is some backlash against these collaborations, since they’re targeting the 17-26 year old crowd, but these people are used to seeing Champion sold for $10 at Walmart.

Oversized tailoring The power blazer takes a new approach with large proportions. As fashion and society moves to a more genderless/androgynous aesthetic, the big suit fits right in. The large blazer takes up space, it shows any onlookers that the wearer holds power. The oversized blazer is a new way to layer; no more mousy cardigan over a t-shirt. power moves only. A large blazer holds the same comfort as any oversized jacket, but showing up to the function in a blazer shows that you mean business. We are in the age of the working woman, the boss bitch, always ready to assert her dominance. in and out of the boardroom, the big blazer means big business. -The blazer brings in a sense of power to any outfit. The large size adds a casual element so that it can be worn anywhere. It’s a great transitional piece, since it can be paired with a skirt, trousers, jeans, or even worn long as a mini dress. Oversized Blazers are a style that transcends any one specific way to be worn.
