MY INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE Abby Brown

ABROAD EXPERIENCE This summer I had the incredible opportunity to do an abroad internship through CEA in Barcelona, Spain. The 10 week program includes housing, internship placement, free classes and activities and 2 guided trips around Spain. It will now be available for future IA students as a great alternative to semester-long study abroad programs. I met many new people from around the world, was immersed in a whole new culture, and got to visit incredible cities and famous landmarks around Europe.

The people in Spain are laid back and eager to share their culture. My coworkers were incredibly welcoming and one of them even brought fresh produce from their garden each week. While in Barcelona we were able to experience a Spanish holiday called “The night of Sant Joan”, which is similar to our fourth of july. The whole city celebrates with food and drink vendors as well as fireworks along the beach.

“Siestas” are common practice in barcelona. Employees feel inspired to create beautiful work with enough time to pay attention to detail and quality.

TRAVE L Barcelona’s location has one of the most accessible airports in Europe. While abroad I was able to visit France, Mallorca, and Switzerland. On weekends we weren’t traveling, my friends and I would catch a train to one of the many idyllic beach towns along Costa Brava.

BIOSPHERE FLUX

I was matched with a lighting design and engineering company called Biosphere Flux. They work with some of the biggest public transportation companies around the world. I interned under the Eflux team who works with artists, hotels, restaurants and residential designers around Europe.

Working in Barcelona gave me a unique perspective as an abroad student. I was able to meet designers and artists from around Europe. My coworkers showed me the best spots for lunch, took me to meetings around Spain, and offered me insider travel advice. I felt like a real part of Barcelona.

ASCALE The first project I worked on was for a tile company called Ascale. Our final configurations were installed throughout the showroom, highlighting the displays to architects, artists, and designers attending the show.

“Matter, space, light, people; everything has a voice. A home is a house that tells a story, the story of those who inhabit it.”

Dialux was used to create a rendering and play around with different angles in order to find the best lighting solution. The final angle was determined by the equal distribution of light while avoiding a harsh glare on the tile.

Marta Corsini is an independent artists and designer based in Spain. Her mission statement is to help people express themselves and connect emotionally to their environment through art and design.

The OWAL filter + the Blues light allowed for the most flexible lighting.

CONVENTO DI AMALFI I was brought on board this project to help create some renderings in photoshop of different lighting ideas the team came up with. It was a cool project to be a part of because I got to be a part of the team’s creative process and see which ideas stuck and why.

The Convento Di Amalfi is located in Amalfi, Italy and was built in the 13th century, originally serving as an abbey. Throughout the centuries the building was passed between church and state, eventually settling as a hotel in 1866. Since then the building has remained an important historical monument and hotel.

Marta commissioned Efflux to help her come up with a lighting design for her upcoming showroom booth. The showroom featured furniture and art from her collection. One of the primary features of this booth was the three dimensional plant art on the wall. The goal was to intensify the shadow the plant cast against the terra cotta wall.

Eflux continued to work with Marta throughout the summer and came up with the final design. Her booth was featured as shown at the Marbella Design Fair 2022.
