Abby Brown

welcome,

I am a driven and enthusiastic person who enjoys connecting with those around me. I love animals (particularly dogs), spending time outdoors, and expressing myself creatively.

My relationship with art and design started at a very young age. I would spend hours drawing, playing with legos, or creating dollhouses out of scrap wood and cardboard. By the time I started using power tools to build very structurally unstable dog houses for my pets, I realized that I wanted to pursue a career that involved designing spaces for other people.

Architecture allows me to put myself into my art. Art is no longer this abstract world but something that I can bring to life in ways that positively impacts people. I feel lucky to pursue a career where I can continue my relationship with art and do what I love. Here is a collection of some of my favorite projects so far.

REVERIE

a wonderland for the senses

Creating a school for the blind challenged me to think of design in more than a visual way. Instead of thinking about Reverie by the way that it looks, I considered traffic patterns, tactile elements, auditory experience, views as a thermal component, and how all these things help create a special world designed for the blind.

The schematics were born from an idea to incorporate racetrack traffic patterns and enclosed greenspaces. The slight curve helps students to calibrate themselves when navigating the building.

For our first semester of our 3rd year studio we were given a preexisting memory care facility located in Chicago. This project was completed in pairs and me and my partner Elizabeth came up with a concept centering of a network of interconnecting spaces creating a community based on the individuals needs and interests. It is inspired by the operations and designs of a beehive, in which everyone has independence yet lives as a community with others. I will be showcasing one of the material specifications of the 3 rooms I designed, as well as the schematics, floor, and ceiling plans curated with the help of my partner

02

By organizing our spaces in a radial design, it will allow for easier wayfinding for patients. The rooms are set up in a “race track” formation, making it impossible for a patient to get lost. This formation also allows for visual clearance while still maintaining physically separate rooms.

concept

Staying true to our concept, the layout of this building is a network of rooms. Each room’s location was chosen by: function, sound, light, views, circulation, and atmosphere. The rooms flow from one to the other, linking uses and aesthetics.

Floor Plan

The first floor is designed to create a village or city like feel. The second floor is oriented around a tighter community feel.

old to new

This mini-project is to design the interior of the first floor of Marvin Hall at the University of Kansas. The goal is to create a state-of-the art, technology and production-based studio suite. Focusing on the re-configuration of these spaces, we are to create a new type of studio suite that incorporates a variety of audio-visual technology and to create a new student oriented production/maker space.

“The mission of recharge is to revitalize students by offering a new approach to the average studio. By clear organization and separation of spaces, students are able to take time for themselves and collaboration becomes more efficient than before. Through this design approach, the space will rejuvenate students and professors alike.”

Bench Pod

In order to create a versatile bench I created sleek, simple modules that can be arranged in many different ways for various uses. Each chair is constructed using 5 types of pieces, joined together by miter joints and secured with splines.

Harmony

This project explored the process of taking figurative elements of a culture and expressing them architecturally. The end result is a space for contemplation that represented a chosen religion. Mine was the Belief System of the Cherokee Indian Tribe.

05

Process work

Our process work included six abstract watercolors and four made of objects from around our homes. The images behind the items reflect the landscapes of the areas this tribe inhibits, the stones and leaves represent connection with nature, the feathers and earrings represent traditional clothing, while the two strings portray harmony.

Sections + Elevations

The shape and colors used in this model all have symbolic meanings. The red spokes represent fire, which represents an earthly version of the sun and purity. The journey the user takes represents the journey of life and the focal point wall at the end translates to the transition to the afterlife. After the viewer takes time to contemplate, they head back the same way they came, representing their beliefs on how their ancestors stay with them even after death.

To draw an object is to sit with it and come to understand it fully.
