LIGHTING DESIGN INTERNSHIP

BARCELONA, SPAIN

About the Program

This summer I had the opportunity to do an abroad internship through CEA in Barcelona, Spain.

Studying abroad had been a dream of mine since I started college. However, the only programs available for IA students were very limited and financially unrealistic. So a classmate and I researched summer internship programs and wrote a petition to the School of Architecture. CEA was approved, becoming the first abroad internship program available for IA students at KU.

Working in Barcelona gave me a unique perspective as an abroad student. I was able to meet designers and artists from around Europe. My coworkers showed me the best spots for lunch, took me to meetings around Spain, and offered me insider travel advice. I felt like a real part of Barcelona.

Company + Position Brief

CEA assists students through the process of finding an internship by offering feedback on your resume and connecting you with companies.

I was matched with a lighting engineering company called Biosphere Flux. They work with some of the biggest public transportation companies around the world. They also have a design department called Eflux that works with artists, hotels, restaurants and residential designers around Europe.

I worked primarily under the design Eflux team. As a lighting design intern my responsibilities included: creating lighting schedules, learning dialux, pulling out graphs and calculations, photoshopping renderings, and putting them all together into cohesive presentations.

ASCALE

The first project I worked on was for a tile company called Ascale. They reached out to Efflux to figure out a lighting solution for their upcoming show room.

I was given a brief including the requirements to be met and spec sheets about each light. Below is the documented process of one of three lighting scene.

My supervisor Pau introduced us to a product Biosphere Flux had recently released called the OWAL filter. This small disk is screwed onto the face of any projector light, each producing a different shape of light. This filter along with the Blues projector allows the user to customize the length and shape of light as well as the angle and location of the light itself.

Based on the distance between the track and the display, the tiles needed to be 30 cm from the floor to allow the lights to disperse over the whole piece.

I used the company’s rendering software, Dialux, to create a rendering and play around with different angles in order to find the best lighting solution. The final angle was determined by the equal distribution of light while avoiding a harsh glare on the tile.

The design featured 7 lights to be positioned .5 meters away from panels at 15 degrees and 7 lights to be positioned on same track at 0 degrees. Track lighting allows for the reconfiguration of lights when the display is changed.

I drew up a spread sheet detailing each part and its price required for installation.

The final step was to determine the temperature of the light. This was especially important since having too cool or too warm of a light could distort the color of the tile.

At the end we got to see the final arrangments used during the showcase.

MARTA CORSINI

This project gave me the opportunity to collaborate with the Efflux team and run off of some of the work they provided. Marta Corsini is an independent artists and designer based in Spain. Her mission statement is to help people express themselves and connect emotionally to their environment through art and design.

Marta commissioned Efflux to help her come up with a lighting design for her upcoming showroom booth. The showroom featured furniture and art from her collection. One of the primary features of this booth was the three dimensional plant art on the wall. The goal was to intensify the shadow the plant cast against the terra cotta wall.

“Matter, space, light, people; voice. A home is a house story of those who inhabit -MARTA CORSINI

people; everything has a that tells a story, the inhabit it.”

The provided documents included dimensions, lighting schedule, and a few renderings to reference when recreating the scene in the lighting software.

Isoline graphs predict the lumions projected during differnt times of day. These graphs are also useful to make sure that light is evenly distributed.

The scene was rendered in Dialux and 2 lights were places at 15 degree angle and one straight in order to achieve the shadow. The back wall panels were lined with LED lights. I also added a skyline light that stretched from the back wall past the sink.

Eflux continued to work with Marta throughout the summer and came up with the final design. Her booth was featured as shown at the Marbella Design Fair 2022.

Convento di Amalfi

The Convento Di Amalfi is located in Amalfi, Italy and was built in the 13th century, orignally serving as an abbey. Throughout the centuries the building was passed between church and state, settling as a hotel in 1866. Since then the building has remained an important historical monument and hotel.

I was brought on board this project to help create some renderings in photoshop of differnt lighting ideas the team came up with. It was a cool project to be apart of because I got to be a part of the teams creative process and see which ideas stuck and why.

For the hallway the team came up with the idea of dramatic wall lights to enhance the arched ceilings in the hallway. These are a few of the rough renderings I made based on the inspiration photos.

I had a lot of fun playing around with adding lighting in photoshop and got good tips and feedback from my coworkers.

Some other spaces explored were the formal dining room, the bar, and the lighting in the hotel rooms. The idea in the dining room was to flood the arches with dramatic lighting.

In the bar and the room the team decided to add some backlighting to draw the eye to unique features and make the spaces seem bigger.

I am forever grateful for the all the memories I made and people I got to meet abroad.

Thank you to Biosphere Flux for taking the time to teach me and welcome me into the company.
