In this edition of WHY PORTUGAL 8 we go to the south of Lisbon. I want to make known to you the region of Setubal, city 40 km from Lisbon, served by a direct motorway
Setubal and its surrounding area are awash with history dating back to before the Roman period. Its relationship with the sea is also remarkably long-lived with a fish salting industry which started in the 1st century AD and a large, protected harbour - the third largest in the country. Setubal lies at the mouth of the river Sado on the coast just below Lisbon and opposite the beautifully filigree sandy Troia Peninsula, with about 18 kms of beaches and a golf course. which protects it further from the often tempestuous Atlantic. Around Setubal there are nature conservation areas, in particular the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve, where it is still possible to watch dolphins in the wild, and the Arrábida Natural Park, which has unique characteristics and contains species that can only be found in areas near the Mediterranean. Setubal is complemented by a historic triangle of two more cities overt by Castles, Palmela and Sesimbra.
Palmela has a great landscape value, but it is also worth mentioning the architectural ensemble of the city, spread on steep slopes of the headland in which the city is located. The city is presided over by the Castle of the Knights of the Order of Santiago da Espada, which is currently classified as a National Monument and houses an Inn. Sesimbra is situated at the base of the slopes of the Arrabida mountain range, and bordered by an extensive sandy beach. Within walking distance is the Cabo Espichel and the extraordinary beach of Portinho da Arrabida. The proximity of these 3 cities to Lisbon, approximately 40 minutes driving, have transformed them into popular places for those who want to permanently reside in an area of great beauty, calm and tranquility, but with easy access to the Capital, Lisbon
Whatever you need, I'm here.
THE CIRCUIT OF THE THREE CASTLE The locality of Sesimbra was only definitively part of the kingdom of Portugal in 1200 AD. In the 1930s and 1940s, the Portuguese restored the Castle which is the last of the Castles on the sea, which arrived, well preserved, to this day. Inside there are two permanent exhibitions on its history, heritage interpretation center, church and a decommissioned cemetery. Visitors can walk through the walls and enjoy a privileged view of the village of Sesimbra and the region. The cafeteria with terrace offers some local products. It stands out in the landscape for its grandeve.
Palmela Castle is 240 metres above sea level and has just been awarded the Travellers Choice 2020 award by the TripAvisor website.
The Castle of Palmela was conquered to the Moors by D. Afonso Henriques, first king of Portugal, in 1147. Within the castle walls we can find the Historic Inn of; the ruins of The Church of St. Mary; the Church of Santiago; also presents several spaces within the Castle, such as the Archaeological Space, the Space of Military Transmissions and the Sculpture Reserve of São Tiago.
ES
In Setubal, we found the Castle which is also known as St. Philip's Fort.
This monument, which they say is inspired by the Castle of St. Telmo in Naples, Italy, was built during the Spanish occupation, during the reign of Filipe I, as a way to strengthen Setúbal's defense against piracy.

Set among the pine covered hills of the Serra da Arrabida this complex of 16th century building was originally a Franciscan monastery. The site covers around 25 hectares and contains a number of buildings, shrines and woodland. Founded in 1542 by a Castilian monk, Frei Martinho de Santa Maria, the convent was built on land owned by the Duke of Aveiro - D. João de Lencastre. This particular site was chosen not only for its lovely views over the Arrabida Hills but because it was where a vision of the Virgin Mary riding a mule up the hillside was said to have happened. Above the main monastery buildings, on one of the highest points in the Serra da Arrabida, are the ruins of the Old Monastery. Built into the hill itself are the remains of several small chapels along with a number of shrines and hermitage cells. It is said that Frei Martinho lived in one of these cells for two years. The Convento da Arrábida ceased to operate as monastery after the 1830s when the government suppressed the activities of many religious orders. Following this there were many years of neglect and many of the buildings became derelict or were looted. The site was bought by the Palmela family in the 1860s but the monastery's decline continued. It was not until the 1940s that any restoration work was carried out. In 1990 the monastery was sold to the Fundação Oriente, a non-profit cultural organisation, who run retreats from the complex. The monastery is still open for pre-arranged tours.

The Troia Peninsula is a sandy strip of more than 25 km long and 0.5 to 1.5 km wide, between the Atlantic Ocean and the estuary of the River Sado. The biodiversity and unique ecosystem, the proximity to Lisbon and the availability of ready-to-live houses have made Troia a clear investment opportunity. In addition to these arguments, there is the low density of construction, exclusivity, safety and diversity of recreational activities. It is important to know the nature reserve of the Sado Estuary in Troia. Its Roman ruins draw attention because they are the largest industrial complex producing fish salting in the Roman Empire. This region has become one of the favorites in Portugal, both for the national market and for the international market. It is a great place to live and invest. Currently, there are three groups of people looking for the district: Portuguese seeking to live in the district, foreigners seeking to live in the district and investors looking for their new venture. There is multiple real estate offer, including solutions for large families and complete and approved architectural projects, in which quality is one of the great assets.

WINE It is estimated that the vine culture in the region was introduced by the Tartessos, the first western civilization, around 2000 BC., which used the wine they produced in commercial transactions with others, an indication of how far back the vineyard culture dates in Setúbal. The cultivation of the vineyard is present in the numerous viticulture holdings in the region, from those dominated by the Castelão grape variety to those by the Moscatel variety, one of the fortified wines that holds a top position in the ranking of the Portuguese wines. The Setúbal region ranges from flat areas, which account for about 80% of the region, characterized by extensive vineyards on sandy soils, to the highest region of the Arrábida mountain range, where vineyards have been planted to take advantage of the rich clay limestone soils existing there. The soft flavors of spices and red berries of the red wines, the floral and fresh aroma of the white wines and the range of tastes of the famous Setúbal Moscatel wine, make the wines of this region, awarded continuously, transport us to a universe of sensations and tradition in a municipality privileged by nature.

OBSESSIONS
FOOD
Characterized by an intense fishing activity since time immemorial, it is therefore not strange that Setúbal's gastronomy is based on fish, shellfish and marine mollusks. Fried squid is the most famous dish, and the one that brings more visitors to the region. But eels, either fried or in a stew, the fish stews and the rice dishes, garnished with either fish or seafood, also make a regular presence in both popular taverns, as well as in more sophisticated establishments. Famous also for the excellent oysters of the River Sado, which bathes the city. As far as sweets are concerned, Setúbal is one of the most famous regions of the country. The tradition dates back to the confection of sweets made from orange, as well as honey from the bees of Serra da Arrábida. From Azeitão, land rich in sweets, the famous Pies, the Amores and the Esses, not forgetting the Egg and Almond Cheeses. Azeitão Cheese, one of the best Portuguese soft cheeses, has unique particularities, achieved by the specific conditions and characteristics of Arrábida.
WHY PORTUGAL SESIMBRA Besides professional fishing and sport fishing (mainly of swordfish), the most significant revenues in Sesimbra come from tourism. The town is known for its beaches, fish restaurants and nightlife. Sesimbra can appreciate its beaches, traditional fish restaurants and the Arrábida National Park. Sesimbra serves as the landing point for the submarine communications cables, such as SAT3/WASC and Atlantis-2. Also remarkable, the Cabo Espichel, a winswept and rugged headland that was once an important pilgrimage destination. With a unique church and two sets of dinosaur footprints.
ALDEIA DO MECO The Village of Meco, is a residential area that became famous from the 80's, for its Naturist beach, perhaps the first recognized at the national level. It has become a preferred area of many figures of Art, Cinema and Fashion, and nowadays, what was a summer area, is today an excellent residential option, 40 minutes driving from Lisbon. It has a large offer of villas, independent or in private condominiums, for those who want to associate the tranquility of the countryside, living close to the sea and the Capital.
WE ARE EVERYWHERE WE ARE GLOBAL AGENTS PALMELA A semi-rural town, it is located up a hill in the Arrábida area, within Portugal's largest urban area. Many people are moving in from big cities like Lisbon. The castle, Castelo de Palmela, offers a unique view over the whole region of the Setúbal Peninsula, Lisbon, and the Atlantic Coast. It was a strategic place in past centuries, and today it is still a main juncture of Portugal's road and rail networks. Palmela is home to many multinational industrial units like Volkswagen and Coca-Cola, and a significant number of foreign families live in the area. This region is famous for the large properties, with beautiful houses, some of historical tradition, which make it an important residential hub.
