THE GRADUATE SCHOOL Abertay’s Graduate School is our dedicated centre for postgraduate students. It offers study and social spaces and is a forum in which you can meet, work and learn with other postgraduates and researchers from across the University. We provide a plethora of training and professional development to our postgraduate community, and offer to help with funding applications, placement opportunities, teaching support, public engagement and outreach activity.
Our offer
The programme offerings are designed with your future firmly in mind – industry-relevant, diverse, with accreditations from professional bodies, which will provide great career prospects. We offer Postgraduate Taught (MSc; MProf) programmes in a range of subject areas, each offering some flexibility and choice, small class sizes and an emphasis on blended learning – class, laboratory, field trips, group work, problem-based learning, student-led learning and online studies. Our Postgraduate Research Degrees (MbR; MPhil; PhD) are individualised and research driven. They can be a platform to an academic or research career, or open the door to high-level career opportunities.
Why do a postgraduate taught (PGT) degree?
A postgraduate qualification can very often provide you with the platform to enter the world of work in a more senior role. It gives you a distinct advantage in the eyes of employers – over and above the fact you will have a deeper, more specialised knowledge of your field, it shows you are focussed and determined to develop your skills. Our postgraduate taught degrees provide a structured curriculum but also flexibility and choice, allowing you to shape your studies in a way that suits you.

At Abertay, our postgraduate taught degrees are informed by strong industry and/or research links and generally have small class sized allowing for greater interaction and guidance from academics.
Making the Most of Masters (MMM)
The MMM project is a collaboration between universities, employers, postgraduate Masters students and enterprise agencies. It is a model that gives you the opportunity to undertake Work Based Project – solution-focused, realworld research projects within an organisation – as an alternative to a traditional Masters dissertation. These projects can be from any discipline and economic area, and benefits to you include greater links with industry, enhanced employability and industry experience and insight. Postgraduate research (PGR) degrees
At Abertay, we offer a range of Doctorate and Research Masters degrees. These are supported by expert supervision within the multidisciplinary Graduate School research environment. You can complete MbR, MPhil and PhD degrees at Abertay, and each is focussed around making an original contribution to knowledge and the development of advanced professional skills. These qualifications act as a platform to a career in academia or research, or a highlevel career elsewhere. It gives you the opportunity to undertake an independent research project tailored to your needs and aspirations. Research undertaken at Abertay is divided into four main themes: Creative Industries The UK’s growing innovative Creative Industries sector is estimated to be worth £10 million an hour to the economy. Abertay University is part of this growing industry and has an international reputation in computer games and arts education. Research in the Creative Industries theme includes the development of tools and technologies for the next generation of computer games and performance/ exhibition spaces, and the use of game technology in scientific computation and visualisation. It builds on Abertay’s established relationships with some of the world’s leading technology manufacturers, digital content creators and service providers to undertake research and development, knowledge exchange and collaborative content creation. Environment The Environment theme at Abertay University combines research in environmental science and engineering, food, and biological sciences, to deliver the solutions needed to address contemporary environmental challenges, to develop research in this and related areas, and to support Abertay’s research-informed teaching. We combine fundamental and industry-focused research fuelled by interactions between discipline experts, experimentalists and theoreticians. Our main areas of expertise encompass environmental science and engineering, biology, food science, systems biology, and sustainable technologies. Our theme draws on the expertise of researchers in our established research and knowledge exchange centres including Food Innovation @ Abertay (FIA), Sustainability Assessment Visualisation and Enhancement (SAVE), and the Urban Water Technology Centre (UWTC), as well as from the five schools of the University.
Security The Security research theme at Abertay University is a research initiative that provides an interconnected and interdisciplinary research platform to address the important key local, national and international priorities we face affecting our security. It focuses on security aspects related to quality of life, crime, technology and access to justice. The Security theme departure point is the assumption that solutions to the challenges we face today require evidence-based research, basic and applied research that are able to reach across traditional academic boundaries and that can reach a variety of interested parties, such as law enforcement agencies, industry actors or citizens. Abertay is well placed to deliver high-quality research able to offer these solutions, due to the emphasis and expertise in a number of key areas, which include cyber security, forensic science, law and forensic psychology. Society No aspect of the human, technological, cultural and natural world is unaffected by ‘society’. People create social relations and institutions, ranging from the local interactions of groups, technologies, communities, organisations, nations, through to the emerging global society. All areas of public policy acknowledge that no activity takes place outside of society and that society itself changes in often-unanticipated ways. Our aim is to bring together a group of active researchers who will contribute expertise as specialists in their own field to develop the Society theme. The Society research theme encompasses a wide range of subject domains, including: media and culture; business, economies and management; psychology; sociology; mental health and wellbeing; sport, performance and exercise and law of employment. ABOUT DUNDEE Welcome to bonnie Dundee, a beautiful, exciting city located on the north bank of the River Tay. A place GQ magazine calls “Britain’s coolest little city;” and in a setting so beautiful it will take your breath away. We have hills, sea and a beach on our doorstep. Recently awarded UNESCO City of Design status – the first UK city to be recognised this way – due to innovations in biomedical research, computer games, comics, and triumphs of yesteryear, like marmalade, Dundee has reinvented itself as a hub for art and design, computer game development and biosciences. The city has a lower cost of living than many other parts of Scotland, and has again been named the most cost-effective place in Scotland to study according to a 2016 survey conducted by NatWest. On top of all this, it is regularly reported as the sunniest city in Scotland, which is never a bad thing! Living in Dundee, one of four major cities in Scotland, puts you in the perfect location to enjoy everything this great nation has to offer. UNIVERSITY LIFE CAMPUS The perfect location
Our small, welcoming campus is situated right in the heart of the city, so you don’t have to compromise on location. You are on the doorstep of everything Dundee has to offer. Just about everything you need to get through the day can be found on campus, but the handy option of a two-minute walk to the city centre is available if you want to mix things up a bit.

You will meet students from over 60 different countries, allowing you to learn about much more than your chosen area of study. Our staff and students regularly talk of the tight-knit, family feel at Abertay, and we’re sure it won’t take long for you to discover that for yourself.
Old meets new
Our campus is a mix of the traditional and the contemporary. The Old College building still has a navigation station on the roof, dating back to the turn of the 20th Century, when students were taught how to navigate using the sun, stars and the technology of the time. Workplace simulation is still at the heart of how we teach today, and you will be surrounded by the latest state-of-the-art facilities, no matter your specialism.

ACCOMMODATION Having your own space can be a great experience, and living in university accommodation gives you the comfort of knowing you are in a safe, well-maintained environment. We have approximately 650 bed spaces across three locations, all of which are a short walk from campus and the city centre. There is a range of room types - including bedsits, single rooms, shared rooms and multi-occupancy flats - so you can be confident you’ll find something which suits your needs. They are great value, with utility bills, internet access and contents insurance all included in the price. Head to our website for up-to-date rent prices. Our accommodation is self-catered and provides a mix of en-suite and shared bathroom facilities with each of our residences having on-site launderette facilities. Wherever you stay, we have campus staff available 24 hours a day, and a team of cleaners ensure the shared spaces and bathrooms en-suite or otherwise - are cleaned regularly. Make sure you have a look at the information for each residence, which will help you decide where you would like to stay.

Lyon Street
Our Lyon Street residences have approximately 125 bedrooms, divided into one, two, or three bed flats. Spread across two buildings, these former private flats have been converted by Abertay - retaining the feel of a private rental but with the perks of university accommodation. Light, airy bedrooms have been made up as singles, twins or doubles, and all contain storage and study areas, with each flat having shared kitchen and shower room facilities. Lyon Street is the furthest residence from campus, but is still only ten minutes’ walk away and benefits from free, on-street public parking. Residents at Lyon Street have exclusive access to a large area of green space located behind one of the buildings. It is a perfect place to chill out with your flatmates. Lyon Street is quieter than our other residences, mainly due to flat sizes. However, those living there find a great community spirit, and there is always something going on.
Meadowside
Parker House
Purpose built for student accommodation, Meadowside has 69 bedrooms divided into six or nine-bedroom flats. Every bedroom is en-suite (with shower), and every flat has a large kitchen/living area.
The modern, purpose built building offers en-suite facilities (with shower) in every bedroom and is a fiveminute walk from campus.
Meadowside is the closest residence we have to campus. It is literally at the end of the road and is no more than two minutes away from class. It is also right in the centre of the city, meaning you’d be struggling to find a better location to base yourself.
Meadowside also has a ‘barrier free’ flat, specifically designed for students with specific physical needs. A secure bike shed is available for anyone keen on the two-wheeled method of transport.
Although Parker House is owned and managed by a private company, the University has a nomination agreement where a number of rooms are held specifically for Abertay students with the remaining rooms made available to students of all local universities and colleges.

STUDENT CENTRE Abertay’s Student Centre is more than just a building – it is the cultural and social hub of our campus, and is the perfect place in which to eat, drink, relax and socialise. The striking building houses a host of great spaces, allowing you to spend your time between lectures however you choose.
Aroma Our cosy café serves a delicious range of coffee and other hot drinks - expertly crafted by our team of baristas, using the finest Fairtrade Italian roast beans. Choose from a range of cakes, tray bakes, paninis and toasties to compliment your coffee, and relax in the comfy seating area. Aroma is attached to the Campus Shop, which is stuffed full of everything you could need – from drinks and snacks, to Abertay-branded clothing, stationery and newspapers.
Bar One The hub of the centre, Bar One offers a fantastic space to eat, study or meet your friends. Tuck into delicious bar food, round off the day with a couple of drinks, or challenge your mates to a game of pool. TV’s play music channels, but there is a quiet space if you are looking for somewhere comfortable to study.
Common Room Our basement bar offers an alternative venue for those looking for some serious down time. With ten free access PCs, a plethora of games consoles, and a projector screen for communal gaming and film screenings, the Common Room is a flexible space with a unique vibe. A DJ booth and massive sound system allow for social events, and a lot of the University’s clubs and societies use it as a home.

Hannah Maclure Centre The top floor of the Student Centre houses a bespoke creative space, bringing together staff, students, the local community and creatives from across the globe, to deliver and participate in exhibitions and cultural events. The public programme is free and open to all, offering a wide range of cultural experiences, from art exhibitions and workshops, to screenings and performances. Digital Culture – enriched by Abertay’s world-leading success in computer games, digital media and computer arts – is often explored through the events here, with the ambition of inspiring new ideas in the field and encouraging creativity and collaboration. There is also a cinema/performance space which can be used by the University community as well as external clients, to screen films, hold symposiums and meetings, or host performances.

SPORT At Abertay, sport and physical activity is as much a part of university life as going to lectures and tutorials. We have a wide range of clubs to join – from traditional team sports like rugby, football and netball, to more niche activities, like triathlon and archery. The vast majority of Abertay sports clubs compete in the British University and College Sport (BUCS) leagues, where we have achieved a great deal of success in recent years. We also get involved in a lot of local and regional events, organised by Scottish Student Sport (SSS), providing all club members plenty of opportunity to participate. The 2015/16 season was our most successful to date, with four BUCS titles, three SSS titles and a number of local league success stories. We also offer a wide range of non-competitive and recreational sport for those looking to enjoy the social side of club life. Our Elite Athlete Programme is dedicated to helping national standard athletes combine their studies with sporting commitments. We have supported athletes competing at the Commonwealth Games and European Championships, in addition to helping many achieve national recognition in their sport. Bernard King Library
Our multi award-winning library provides a mix of learning environments to meet different student needs and is being completely refurbished for September 2017. It is home to the Support Enquiry Zone (SEZ) which is a one stop shop for help and advice about any aspect of university life. Our knowledgeable staff can help you with most requests immediately, or can put you in contact with specialist support if required. The library is also stocked with over 126,000 books, and provides access to over 32,000 electronic journal titles and upwards of 175,000 e-books, which can be accessed online from anywhere.

Food Innovation
Our brand new Food Innovation Centre includes a cutting edge food processing lab and specialist sensory suite. The suite includes a climate controlled environment and an adjoining focus group area which includes the latest in digital teaching facilities. The food processing lab houses a host of facilities, including a spray drier, extruder, micro-brewery, cheese vats, a rheometer, a texture analyser, a freeze drier and much more.

Crime Scenes
Our Division of Science has two bespoke crime scene areas – a mock bank branch and family home. Staff create crime scenes in order for forensic science students to put their skills into practice.

Our Human Intelligent Virtual Environment is a multi-purpose laboratory for research into

As part of a multi-million pound investment in facilities, a brand new Collaborative Learning Suite has been developed. This new ‘digital classroom’ uses Kramer VIA Connect software and Top Sec Synergy furniture to create a flexible, active learning environment which promotes greater interaction and collaboration between students and also between staff and students. The classrooms use wireless technology to make the sharing and presentation of information much easier. Brand new science labs allow for flexible use and have been designed to remain valuable study areas for at least 20 years. They are also equipped as ‘digital classrooms’.

Intensive English for Academic Purposes programme
Faith and Belief
If English isn’t your first language and you would like to develop your academic English skills, using authentic materials and assignments, this programme is recommended for you. If you’ve received a conditional offer, based on your English level, you can choose to join this programme rather than resit IELTS or another English language test.
Abertay is a proudly multi-faith and multicultural institution. Our Chaplaincy seeks to serve the whole University community in a spirit of openness, friendship and mutual respect. We provide a room for mediation and contemplation, two Muslim prayer rooms (one for brothers, another for sisters) and a larger space for all faith group activities. Additionally, we have a directory and contact details of places of worship across Dundee and Tayside.

COMPUTER GAMES TECHNOLOGY This programme offers a chance for software engineers to develop expertise in the games industry area and to develop the research, innovation and lifelong learning skills that you will need to stay abreast of the rapidly evolving technologies in computer games development and its related disciplines.

Employer engagement is vitally important and employer feedback is sought on an on-going basis. The programme is part of Sony’s PlayStation First programme that offers students access to the latest software development kits and proprietary software. Students on the programme will be registered on UKIE’s Student membership and have access to additional support, mentoring and industry events.

What you study The focus is on the programming modules that concentrate very much on 3D graphics programming as you are expected to arrive with a good grasp of mathematics and of object oriented software engineering techniques. There is still a need for mathematics to be taught to assist the 3D programming and this is combined with artificial intelligence techniques. The group project has development work in a team as its main focus. There is a networking module with architectural subject material to enhance the networking material. The course also includes a core Research Methods module, which will prepare you for your Masters project. The final semester is entirely focussed on the substantial research and development based project in the Masters project.

This programme prepares you for the career of a professional game developer, with the exact role being determined by each student’s particular area of study or specialisation (usually identified by your undergraduate degree).
